Access to Recordings on nyctaper: Change in Policy

January 17, 2008
By

nyctaper will no longer be offering direct downloads to anonymous people who come to the site, download and leave. From this point forward, all readers who wish to download a concert will need to email [email protected] with a request for access to the recording. Private link locations will be provided to those readers who seek a particular recording. This will also apply to the recordings currently on the site, as those downloads will be removed from the public server one by one.

Please be aware that download statistics and server access statistics are available to the administrators of this site. If password abuse occurs, then recordings will be removed entirely.

We are abundantly aware of the people who are our faithful and supportive readers. Those people will receive priority.

    Why the change in policy?

  2. January 17, 2008 at 8:17 pm

    Why not?

this always seems to happen. about a year ago it happened to another one of the music blogs called the indie connection. it was one of the best (as you were/are) and then because of little appreciation and other pointless “comments” it stopped updating. no matter what type of site it is, the best ones seem to stop or change drammatically. the few ruin it for the many!

  4. January 17, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Well, I can say that for the faithful readers, this change is actually for the better. Not only do you get to have a nice email exchange with nyctaper, but the speeds of the server should increase because there won’t be thousands of anonymous downloads every day.

Really no different from a site that requires a username and password… and it is the owners choice, so why complain about it?

i understand your need to do this. there seems to be an assault on bloggers lately. i hope you do alright with yours. good luck.

Regardless of changes, nyctaper is what I consider a “model concept” for live music recordist and commentary sharing.

Sadly it was only a matter before this had to happen. A good thing can only be kept quiet for so long before it gets too much attention for it’s own good. I think you’re on the right track in terms of limiting the amount of users in developing a somewhat more stringent policy of allowing downloads.
I only found your site not too long ago but hope to continue to see it flourish.

To those that have abused it…..you’re a bunch of hacks!

Why not set up a BitTorrent tracker? That should take care of whatever bandwidth concerns you ran into. Requiring registration is pretty annoying. Have you seen bugmenot.com?

  10. January 18, 2008 at 4:52 pm

You’re absolutely right, its far too annoying for a reader to have to go through the incredible hassle of typing an email to gain free access to a recording.

I have a better idea. Each time I record a concert, I will personally deliver it to the door of the home of each user. Sort of like a live-recording-Santa-Claus who comes 75 times a year.

    Sounds great!

Seriously though, BitTorrent? No? Too busy challenging distribution paradigms? Good job on making visitors feel unwelcome.

  12. January 18, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Bit torrent has its own set of problems. I’ve been dealing with the frustrations of that distribution method since 2003, and I don’t want to have anything to do with it on this site.

Oh, and I’m so sorry that you’re feeling unwelcome. Some kind person just sent me an email with 300 links to various forms of anti-depressant medication. Perhaps I can forward that to you.

    dear nyctaper >
just visiting to see where you’ve been to after a couple weeks away. things seem to have gotten a little frisky – wassup with the complaints with your policy? if you can’t abide > take a ride.

thanks for all of the great shows & the efforts you put forth in getting them to us. especially the MGMT @ music hall brooklyn – they’re my flavor of the year so far, & your recording gives me another hint of their talents – anyone else hear genesis circa 1975 in them keyboards?

i look forward to the day when there’ll actually be something i’d be interested in requesting permission to add to my library (malkmus? – pls)

cheers! & keep up the great work

    “NYCMartyr”? Pretty defensive replies…

  17. January 19, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Actually, I think they’re more sarcastic than defensive.

But seriously, you didn’t answer my question above. Why not ask readers to send an email to ask for a link for the recording? Why is it preferable to have thousands of anonymous downloads a day sucking up server speeds for the faithful fans of the bands and visitors to this site?

From what I’m reading in the dozens of emails I’ve answered in the last 24 hours, and from the comments posted by people not named Natalie or Alexei, this seems to be something quite welcomed by the readers of this site.

That’s some funny stuff . I love your recordings especially Bjork . Keep it up and I look forward to a little electronic conversation !

more power to ya, nyctaper! I’d much rather email for access to your great recordings than not have any at all.
And I agree on the torrent thing-they suck! if you don’t jump on right away, you don’t get it.

    more sarcasm, please.

    Hi taper,

you’re perfectly right with everything you’re saying. Hope you’re not too frustrated by some jerks who just don’t know how to say thanks to a gift. Sad you had to change your policy, I liked the easy way to just download a song or two and maybe find a new band for me. Well, those were the days…

    Keep rockin’!

  21. January 23, 2008 at 11:00 am

No problem requesting an email. It’s annoying when you see hundreds of d/l’s and no comments or even an acknowledgement. I run into the same thing on my blog.

thanks for all the good music

The only thing I see as bad about the new policy is the extra work you have to take on to do it. I’m sure the bandwidth payoff will be more than worth it for you though. Sure, it’s a bit of a drag not to be able to sample a song quickly from a band you’ve never heard, but we can still do that after getting the access, so it really won’t be too different.

    Thanks and Peace.

So glad to hear it hasn’t been too much of a load on you! Woo-Hoo! That’s a big reduction in bandwidth. Keep up the great work, it’s much appreciated!

Hey…I was just reading the marco benevento 1.31.08 show review on jambase.com and was directed to your site for a download(I suppose this is one reason you’re getting alot of people trying to download and changing your policy). But I was wondering how I could get access to this download; the show looks sweet. Thanks, johnwcasey

  25. February 11, 2008 at 11:56 am

Actually, its quite the opposite. I welcome links from people like my friends at Jambase. That kind of link sends real fans to the site who are then given access to the music. The anonymous downloads are the problem, not the real fans.

Anyway, just pop me off an email and you’ll get the download link.
