Wilco opening Lollapalooza with “Misunderstood” 1997-style
As longtime readers of nyctaper are aware, I have seen Wilco on almost every trip they have made to NYC since our first Wilco concert at Mercury Lounge in 1996. Our recording of their Hammerstein show last June has been one of the more popular downloads in the history of this site, as well as has been the vintage 1997 recording we offered from the archives.
So when the McCarren Pool show sold out in minutes and craigslist posters were asking $100 per ticket, we decided that we would miss this trip to NYC. It was only after I watched Wilco’s excellent Lollapalooza performance via webcast (see youtube clip above) that I decided that Wilco was playing too well to miss them this year. The old closer-to-the-show-the-easier-to-buy trick worked, as we just got a ticket for face via craigslist. See you there!
nyctaper recording of Wilco’s McCarren show will be posted tomorrow. The sound quality is outstanding. Perfect location and a great job by Wilco crew, sound in the venue was spectacular.

I was wondering if that was you who was set up near the soundboard. I look forward to hearing this, as seeing them with the horns for the first time was a revelation.
I think I mentioned this on an old post (maybe the Hammerstein show or the Figgs show from Maxwells) but I’d kill for a copy of those 1996 Merc. Lounge shows.
Oh, and any chance you can reup the Feb. 97 show? I somehow missed emailing you for that one.
So were you the guy who was leaning by the soundboard with a girl (who you kept on squeezing)? If so, I was the guy behind you with the Capitol theatre t-shirt.
Steve, email me for the link to the ’97 show.
I was directly in front of the board, not the guy off to the side with his girlfriend.
I was standing next to Darren Jessee (Hotel Lights, former Ben Folds Five drummer), who I met at the show and who is a really nice guy.
