Over the last couple of weeks, we have had a bad time of it in terms of receiving permission from bands to record. Obviously, we respect the artist’s request to refrain from recording their performance, but nevertheless its pretty frustrating. On February 28, we had excellent seats for the Grizzly Bear special show at BAM, but their management asked us not to record. The following day, unauthorized poor quality recordings were all over the web and we were incredibly disappointed that such a show was archived and circulated in such a manner [edit: we just received a friendly email from the band that informed us that it was a venue issue and not the band’s decision].
Later that week, Dan Auerbach’s management denied a request to capture his Bowery show, despite the fact that The Black Keys permit open taping. That was a bit of a head-scratcher. And finally, a few days ago we received word that Throbbing Gristle does not want their first NYC show ever archived — we are not permitted to record the Masonic Temple show.
A large part of the frustration of such rejection is the fear that this site has not gotten its message across to the bands — that somehow we’re still stigmatized by the very old idea that tapers are “bootleggers”.
Ultimately, the good news is that the rejections are still the exception — the vast majority of artists that we approach do accept and understand the positive aspects of what nyctaper does for the bands and fans.
And in the spirit of soldiering on, we have added some new shows to the list below.

that is why i stealth record. then again i don’t have a site like yours and i am banned from u/Lng. a couple of yrs ago i tried to stealth the black keys. i thought they allowed taping. all around the venue there were signs that said no taping. i mic’d up in a men’s room stall. when i left the stall someone with the venue asked to see inside my coat. he must have peeked into the stall. i could have let them hold my gear and went to the show. instead i split so they would not recognize me again. i also hoped they did not have survaillence footage. i have stealthed many many shows at the venue since without any problems. i no longer set up in the men’s room.
I would have to think that surveillance cameras in a rest room would be against the law.
I’m sorry to hear you have been having so many problems with taping. If the bands in question wanted to release the shows you were recording as official release, then I would understand.
Btw, I hope you’ll consider recording Superdrag and Nada Surf next month. Both of them put on a good show, and I don’t think you’ll have a problem taping them.
The response from the Auerbach camp was puzzling. I caught the show at Music Hall of B’burg and it was amazing. It truly pained me that I couldn’t record it. I did speak with his engineer though, and was told they were recording all the shows but the future intent was uncertain. Perhaps they’ll make the shows available at a later date… ?
At the Auerbach show in Cleveland, there was a very visible fellow with a taping rig in the middle of the venue; I’ve not seen anything surface from the show, so maybe they’re planning some sort of formal live release. It still sucks that his people wouldn’t give you the greenlight.
We love what you’re doing. Keep your chin up.
I really wish someone would’ve captured the GB BAM show in top quality. From the sketchy quality mp3s I’ve got my hands on, it sounds as if the show has live album potential. People (like myself) who do not live in the NYC area would’ve eaten it up!
