I think it was at the beginning of “Buried In The Nude” when the pent up energy of the crowd at the Screaming Females show Thursday at 92YTribeca let loose and the venue experienced what is probably its first legitimate punk rock mosh pit. I expected this show in celebration of the opening of the brooklynvegan “480 Pixels” photo exhibit to be a good time — some of my favorite people in the music world getting a chance to show a truly impressive array of a half-decade of concert work in a venue with a truly outstanding sound system and some great amenities (Olde Saratoga IPA for four bucks!). But when the unbridled energy overflowed and the band was truly dialed in, there was no choice but to join the crowd. By the time the set ended, I was renewed in my belief that Screaming Females is perhaps the most compelling live band around today. This is a trio of superb musicians performing deceptively complicated music within a genre not necessarily known for the musical proficiency of its protagonists. While Marissa Paternoster’s guitar shredding garners much of the attention, its the power of the rhythm section that gives her the freedom to stretch out and wail. King Mike’s power bass and Jarrett’s aggressive drumming are lead instruments in their own way. The 92YTribeca set featured a heavy selection material from their new album Ugly, released in April by Don Giovanni Records. We are streaming the mosh-causing “Buried” and the set closing extended workout of “Starve The Beat” which scorched for nearly eight minutes. Screaming Females will appear in NYC again on September 8 at the Williamsburg Waterfront for the Riot Fest.
The sound quality of this recording is one of my best recent recordings. I clamped the Sennheiser 8040 cardioids on a post about 20 feet from the stage and mixed with a true stereo board feed. The sound in the 92YTribeca was outstanding the mix was spot on. The results are sublime. Enjoy!
