The last time we saw Deerhoof, it was in an opening slot for The Flaming Lips at the Hammerstein Ballroom almost three years ago. So it was fitting that last night’s show at Le Poisson Rouge was an indirect result of The Flaming Lips inviting Deerhoof to play All Tomorrow’s Parties this past weekend. In further support, Kliph Scurlock sat behind the drum kit for the set closing “Milking”. In the meantime, the crowd was treated to an hour of that tightly crafted and intense music that only Deerhoof can create — angular dueling guitar lines, thundering omnipresent drums, and the offbeat bass and vocals of tiny but ferocious Satomi Matsuzaki. The set also featured the debut of a new song “I Did Crimes for You”, a number which drummer Greg Saunier informed the crowd was written a week ago and completely changed during the show’s soundcheck. Also featured were eclectic covers of the Ramones (”Pinhead”) and Canned Heat (”Going Up The Country”). The band was called back for a second encore and finished the show with a spry “Snoopy Waves”.
We are indebted again to Le Poisson Rouge and the Wordless Music Series creator Ronen Givony for their incredible generosity and cooperation. Additionally, Deerhoof kindly permitted the nyctaper to record this concert. We connected the Edirol R-44 via XLR cables to the venue’s state of the art multitrack system and captured a recording of superb professional quality. Enjoy!

Thanks for this! Track 3 is called “Let’s Dance the Jet,” which is a cover of a song from some old sci fi movie.

great show…did you happen to catch Serengeti & Polyphonic? They are the best indie rappers out there. Serengeti was just reviewed by Robert Christagau - (http://bnreview.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Rock-Roll/Character-References/ba-p/1131) and in the New Music Report in Rolling Stone - (http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/08/26/new-music-report-serengeti/).

I caught both opening bands, but need to get clearance before posting either of them. If you know either of the guys from Serengeti & Polyphonic, tell them to send me an email!

Do you have an unedited recording of this show? The recordings are wonderful, but the mp3 direct download option has mp3s with some of the songs cut short. Thanks for those, though.
September 24th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
The mp3 files are not “edited” or truncated. There must have been a problem with your download or when you unzipped the files. About 1100 people have downloaded the mp3s of this show and no one else has reported a problem.
