In the Great Recession (or whatever you wish to call it), only a handful of states could claim to having taken the beating that Florida did.   The Sunshine State, once a land of promise and (mostly) fulfilled retirement fantasies, was laid waste to by the crisis, its optimism shattered to its core.  But, sometimes, turmoil is a boon to art.  Call it coincidence, but it seems that around the time that Florida busted out, the state also started to crank out quality music.

As we mentioned in our earlier post, Lil Daggers are one of a wave of promising Florida acts (Surfer Blood, the Drums, Holiday Shores) that have nothing to do with the rap-metal and other dreck that the state was known for in the prior decades.  The band is still very much on the new side, with no recorded output to speak of other than a split 7″ and some demos that you can hear on one of my favorite blogs, Pop Tarts Suck Toasted.  However, once you experience their stage show, you’ll agree with us that this Miami band could very well be The Next Big Thing in their own scene — and maybe, beyond.  In a 20-minute tease of a set, in front of a smallish audience, the Daggers burned up the stage, at times evoking a cross between the psych-rock of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the spastic flower-punk performances of The Black Lips.  Though thoroughly in the garage rock camp, the Daggers distinguish themselves by having a huge sound, with six band members including two guitarists, a drummer, a bassist, a lead singer, and the aforementioned singer/cymbal player.  With a sound that is high-energy, eminently catchy, and party-ready, Glasslands was only the beginning of what is sure to be more national exposure for this young band.  This set was the last of three stops in Brooklyn for the Daggers, who are on their way back to Miami.  But, trust us, they will be back.

I recorded this set from the optimal spot in the venue using a combination of microphones to capture both direct sound and the sound of the room.  The vocals are somewhat low in the mix, as they were in the house, but the recording has excellent detail and separation.  Enjoy!
