New Firefox Tool - Down Them All!

Posted by nyctaper - 06/09/07 at 11:09 am

My readers have often wondered whether the tedious nature of downloading one track at a time from nyctaper could be eliminated with an easy-to-use piece of software. In the past, I had directed readers in the comments sections of individual recordings to the wiki page for available download managers (click here).

Well, thanks to the pointer from “les amis Français” at the Michto blog, I can point my readers to the new Firefox Extension called DownThemAll!.
DownThemAll!

If you’re still using Internet Explorer (oh shame!), this tool is not for you. However, if you’re one of the growing number of Firefox users, this freeware tool will allow you to download whatever links you choose from nyctaper. In other words, you can download an entire concert in one click, and maximize the speed of the download.

Dammit, this thing acted like a piece of junk so far. It canceled all my downloads halfway-through due to “server errors”. It’s easier to download each track individually with Firefox, from what I can tell so far.

Not sure what the problem was. I’ve used this now several times, with much success. Although obviously not on my own server. I’ll run a few tests later and see if its ok.

It apparently also works with Netscape 9, although I haven’t used it yet.

I just used this tool to download the most recent Fiery Furnaces recording from this site. 25 tracks, a txt file and an md5 file. The entire thing downloaded in about 10 minutes.
The program slows down recording the nearly complete tracks and starts other tracks, so occasionally it will be downloading 4 or 5 tracks at once, and the nearly complete ones will slow down to 0. Eventually all the tracks complete just fine.

I forgot to say, I didn’t actually test it on this website. I tested on another one, making a queue of five downloads, each over 100MB. They all stopped halfway (or less) through. Then I tried downloading each one individually with this program, but I had to constantly ask for the download to continue, as it kept getting “server errors”. It was much easier to download the files with Firefox’s regular downloader.

I’ve used this add-on for ages, including on this site and it works wonderfully. If you are having problems, go to preferences / advanced and where it says “multipart downloads” change it to “1″. I don’t remember what the default is for this but once I did that it cleared up any issues I had. Thanks for all the great shows!!

I am getting a 503 error. Any idea what this is?

Thanks, Lewis. I changed my default mulitpart download from 5 to 1 and now the songs are downloading, four at a time in a queue. Hurray! Thanks nyctaper for the Morrissey show!

It definitely works on Netscape 9. However, I haven’t been able to download all tracks at once…at least not for Springsteen…but the tracks do come in fast. I have used it to download
files from other sites, and they come in more than twice as fast when I use DTA.

Thanks nyctaper. I saw you in thew balcony for the Nov 10, 2007 mĂşm Wordless Music Series. I can not thank you enough for your site. The Firefox download manager worked great. I downloaded both mĂşm shows and the Kria Brekken without any problems. Great speeds too. Thanks Again

Does this add-on not work with the Mac version of Firefox (2.0.0.9)? It’s definitely installed but the “Download Away” link just takes me to addons.mozilla.org. Is that link supposed to start the download of all songs once the Add On is installed? I’ve checked all the DownloadThemAll preferences and can see no obvious errors?

I keep on getting a 404 error when I try to download anything…does anyone know what this means?

There are no more direct downloads on the site itself. You email nyctaper@nyctaper.com and I give you the download location.

I am looking for the download location. Thank you for posting. Looking forward to hearing this. Thanks again.
