Garcia Peoples: August 19, 2023 Deep In The Valley

Our coverage of the 2023 Deep In The Valley festival continues!

Today we have site favorites Garcia Peoples set. Unfortunately, Danny (Guitar, Vocals) and Cesar (Drums) were unable to make it. Thankfully a friend of the band, Ryan Jewell, was on hand to play with Ryley Walker and was able to sit in. With this unique line-up, the band treated us to a single 30+ minute piece of improvisation.

Launching into free improv isn’t something new for Garcia Peoples. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things about them. They are so comfortable with it that I often don’t know if it’s truly improv or a new song they are working on. It’s honestly embarrassing how many times I’ve had to go up to Tom or Andy after a set and ask if something they did was song I don’t know or just jam. Spoiler alert; it’s almost always a jam.

I recorded this with my MBHO cards at stage lip and very nice board feed from FOH engineer Daniel Stout. The quality is excellent!

Garcia Peoples: June 24, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

The Nyctaper team’s support of site favorites Garcia Peoples continues! This show was a bit of a one off at their home away from home, Tubby’s.

The set opened with “Break Me Down” which I hadn’t seen them play since the now legendary “Natural Factsrelease show in 2019. They worked through several of the Natural Facts tunes and two really spectacular pieces of improv very much worth your time.

Garcia Peoples has a bunch of excellent shows lived up for next month. They will be part of the absolutely LOADED line up at Raven Sings The Blue’s Deep in The Valley festival. Additionally they are playing several dates with William Tyler which may prove to be the tour of the summer. I’ll be at the Tubby’s date for sure. Hope to see you there!

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with the MBHO’s and a board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Will. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples at Tubby’s 2023-01-14

If you are a follower of this site, you do not need an introduction to Garcia Peoples. Collectively the NYCTaper team is responsible for 46% of the GP shows uploaded to the live music archive. The reason we keep coming back is because they keep evolving and this show was a perfect example of that.

The night started with an over exuberant Tom attempting a left foot crossover move to his wah pedal and falling behind the drum set. Through force of will and sheer determination he maintained peak shred for several more minutes seeing the piece to conclusion. At this point they brought saxophonist Jefry Brown up who sat in for the remainder of the set. What came next was a nearly 20-minute version of GP staple “A Reckoning” but presented in a way I had never heard. The existing structure of the song was replaced by a free jam in D featuring kraut like propulsion covered in freak out sax melts that felt much closer to electric free jazz or something you would hear at a Sunburned Hand Of The Man show then the Indie jam style they are most often associated with. Completely thrilling and the reason we keep coming back.

You can catch GP playing several Northeast shows this February including two in Boston with Sunburned Hand Of The Man that will surely be can’t miss events. New England freaks come out!

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with MBHO’s and board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Will. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: June 23, 2021 The Sultan Room at The Turk’s Inn

July 7, 2021
By

A few weeks ago Garcia Peoples began their summer stand at The Sultan Room, the rooftop performance space at The Turk’s Inn. The first of three, two-set performances features some new songs, unheard jams, and the highly anticipated return of “One Step Behind” to New York City—that one was last heard in these parts and subsequently immortalized on the Live at Nublu 10/10/19 tape. The outdoor sessions continue July 21st and August 18th. (Pro tip: Get a discounted ticket for both shows!) But you say: “I can’t wait a whole two weeks for live music!” Well never fear, because Garcia Peoples play Colony in Woodstock, NY this Saturday. The show starts at Noon with an opening set from Zachary Cale. Bound to be good times there. And hey, while we’re at it here’s a lovely tape from last month at the very same venue by friend-of-the-site, Mr. Kliked.

I recorded this show at the stage lip, combining my mics with a board feed courtesy of the audio engineer, Imoni Cole-Palmer. The sound is excellent—upfront, Legendary Guitar Amp Tapes-style. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: June 4, 2021 Industry City

Welcome back! Its been a hellish 16 months for everyone we know. No one was spared, and many friends of the site went through trauma that no person should have to endure. But as far as we can tell, this existential nightmare seems to be coming to close. Today New York State celebrated a 70% vaccination rate, and much of the City is re-opening, including live performances.

Last weekend we experienced our first real “concert” event in forever, and it could not have been a more spiritually and emotionally fulfilling night. Garcia Peoples are obviously one of the site’s favorite bands, and most importantly a favorite set of people, so it was quite appropriate that this would be the NYCTaper coming out party. In the open air at Industry City, and with GP as a soundtrack, we grooved while smiling at friends we haven’t seen in months and months, shook hands, hugged, and generally felt true enjoyment. For their part, the band debuted a bunch of outstanding new material, jammed on some classics, and sounded tight and focused. They are truly back and we couldn’t be happier.

Garcia Peoples are adding new shows to their touring schedule on a regular basis. At this point, they are playing 3 dates in consecutive months at Turk’s Inn (Sultan Room roof) in Brooklyn, beginning with a show next week (June 23) and then appearances at the Treefort Festival and Lockn Fest. Dates are being added, check out their bandcamp page for updates.

This show was recorded with Schoeps cards set up at the soundboard tent, and mixed with a board feed. There were issues with the elements and a humming noise from a generator, but overall we’re pretty pleased with the sound quality. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: October 24, 2019 Nublu 151

December 6, 2019

We’re close to winding down on Garcia Peoples residency shows. Here’s week number 4 and things are still running hot. Like the previous week, the band shares a couple new tracks: “Gliding Through,” which we heard first over the summer at Brooklyn Bowl, along with “Wasted Time” and its intro jam. This was also our first chance to see “Hourglass” live. That one came out on the Hans Chew & Garcia Peoples collaboration and features some live vocals from Andy Cush. Finally, the band closes with a monster version of “Rolling Tides” that was so great we forgave them for repeating the track during their residency.

Meanwhile, One Step Behind is still fresh and is popping up on lots of year-end lists all over. If you haven’t done so, grab one! Garcia Peoples also have a ton of shows coming up throughout the US. Check out their tour dates for a show near you!

I recorded this from our usual location at Nublu. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Whereas week two of Garcia Peoples’ Nublu residency celebrated One Step Behind with an extra-long outing of its title track, the band gets back to the shorter tunes in the third week. With Danny Arakaki handling most of the vocals, the band debuts two new songs: “This Place” and the embryonic “Terry” with some improvised vocals. The real standout though is the opening “Total Yang” into “I Ain’t Hurt.” Neither song has ever sounded as sweet as they do here.

Garcia Peoples’ October residency at Nublu was a resounding success. For five Thursdays the band brought out old songs, new songs, special guests, and terrific openers. Night one of the residency was posted last month and in the next week or so we’ll be sharing the rest of the recordings.

Night two was the record release show for One Step Behind, their most ambitious record yet. Just two songs, with the title track clocking in at 30 minutes and featuring Tom’s father Bob Malach on saxophone. Of all the residency shows, this night was my most anticipated, not only because it was a chance again to hear “One Step Behind” after a long absence from setlists, but also because the elder Malach would be joining them on saxophone to bring the record to life. It did not disappoint, to say the very least. Stretching the track to nearly 50 minutes, the band improvises in each of the song’s parts, once more reminding us how great this band is and how thrilling and worthwhile live music can be.

Photos from Brooklyn Bowl by Christopher Bruno

In case you’ve been hibernating for the summer, you should know that Garcia Peoples have a new album out on October 18, One Step Behind. It’s a two song deal, with the title track being a newly-recorded 32-minute version of the song that’s been a staple in their live sets for a while now. You can preorder that for October delivery and get an 8-minute radio edit immediately. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing! The second song on the record is a new one, “Heart and Soul,” that you can preview here from their recent Brooklyn Bowl gig opening up for Howlin’ Rain and Ryley Walker. A couple other songs make their first appearance on one of our recordings: “Gliding Through” and “One at a Time,” plus a jam I’m pretty sure we’ve heard before in some form.

Then travel back to July when the Garcias played with Chris Forsyth at Market Hotel. We’ve already posted their set backing Forsyth, but here finally is the proper Garcia Peoples set. And by the way, you can see the Garcia Peoples backing Chris Forsyth again this Friday September 6 at Nublu. Do not miss that!

For more of that very necessary Garcia Peoples fix they’re playing Philadelphia on Sept 14 with Chris Forsyth and Sept 29 in Asbury Park with Real Estate. Then in October, they’ll be doing a residency at Nublu every Thursday night. Wow!

I recorded this with a pair of MBHO hypercardioid mics positioned at our usual spot at Brooklyn Bowl. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
