This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, and when 2015 goes up in January it will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

List of All Available NYCTaper Recordings – 2010 Posts

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back five years at 2010. The following years (’11 and ’12) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

Condo Fucks: May 22, 2015 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Lower East Side venue Cake Shop has lived in many ways a parallel existence to we here at NYCTaper. We’ve recorded and posted shows from Cake Shop somewhere in the range of one hundred occasions. We’ve hosted our annual CMJ day parties at Cake Shop for seven consecutive years. This year the venue is celebrating its 10th year (we just had our 8th anniversary), and the next few months will see some very special events. On Friday night it was an event that was literally a perfect match for NYCTaper. The show featured Yo La Tengo — a band very familiar to our readers — in their alter-ego guise as garage-rock band Condo Fucks. We’ve also captured the most recent Condo Fucks shows in the area, including the band’s last-ever show in venue at Maxwell’s in 2013, which I believe is the last time Condo Fucks actually played a show.

I’ll admit that it was somewhat surreal to see the three members of Yo La Tengo enter tiny basement stage at Cake Shop. We’ve seen hundreds of bands on this stage, but perhaps never one of the kind of legendary status that YLT possesses. The set began as all of the Condo Fucks shows we’ve seen have begun, with the instrumental Booker T track “Outrage” before the band personalized the Harmonics song “On the Warpath”. The remaining set-proper was a high-energy run through the band’s usual garage covers — Rascals, Flamin Groovies, The Exciters and the like. At the mid-set mark, the Condo Fucks were joined by long-time friend Gaylord Fields (“The Great Gaylord”) on vocals for a four-pack of songs that we’ve never seen the band perform before. The clear highlight was the extended version of the Swamp Dogg cult classic “Total Destruction To Your Mind” which we’re streaming below. A Condo Fucks show is a rare event and it was a very classy move that Yo La Tengo celebrated Cake Shop’s 10th Anniversary by treating the venue to this special show.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in a thread above the stage and mixed with a board feed. The on-stage mics captured the instruments with great clarity and the board feed was used to fortify the vocals. The result of the mix is a very well-balanced recording with superb sound. Enjoy!

A few months ago, we compiled the list of 2014 Recordings, and here is the previous year. This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

YLT 1

This show represents the only time this year that I saw Yo La Tengo live. You have to go back nearly a decade to find a calendar year when I saw the band only once. The band went out on a little mini-tour in celebration of their official 30th anniversary as a band and also in support of a new release called Extra Painful — a reissue of their classic 1993 album Painful packed with a bunch of bonus material. So since the two Town Hall shows were not conducive to recording, I made a roadtrip in the pouring rain to Philadelphia and back. The Trocadero is a converted old theatre right in the heart of Philly’s Chinatown District and its just a few blocks from the Franklin Bridge — an easy in and out of the City. Although the Troc has two balconies and an official capacity of 1200, it definitely has an intimate vibe perhaps since the actual floor is fairly small. But intimate or not, we’re used to seeing Yo La Tengo amongst “friends” at some fairly small-ish places, so there was a definite “road” feel to this show. As YLT shows go, this one had pretty much everything you could ask for including some rare nuggets (“Empty Pool”, “Demons”), special guests (Tara Key early, and full Antietam later), plenty of noisy stuff, and an absolutely ear-crushing “Story”. We are streaming a standout version of “Drug Test” that began with a (separately tracked) false start but like in so many of those situations with a “start over”, the band totally nailed it on the re-do. Yo La Tengo currently has no scheduled dates, but we’re hoping that we get more than one chance to see them live in 2015.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in the front of the soundboard booth and mixed with a superb feed provide by the band’s longtime and legendary FOH Mark Luecke. As with most YLT recordings, there are level issues — the quiet songs are whispers and the noisey songs are loud as heck — so there are some minor artifacts from my editing to create a more consistent level throughout. Ultimately the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 16, 2013 Bell House – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The final night of these long runs of shows by Yo La Tengo are always the most bittersweet nights. Throughout the week of the shows, we fall into a kind of change of lifestyle during these periods — get through the work day, get to the venue, and then inside the little cocoon of the show. Its a bit of a fantasy world, and by the time of the last show we’re tired, happy for the experiences and perhaps a little nostalgic for what’s soon to end. The band generally saves some special treats for the closer and on the fourth and final night of the Bell House it was no different. From our perch adjacent to the VIP area, we could see that the Kaplan and Hubley extended families were out in full and this added a bit of “old home” to the performance. We felt that the more personal lyrics were especially heartfelt — “Our Way To Fall” and “The Point of It” were particularly solid versions of those songs. But for those of us who’d weathered the snow and the travel and put off whatever we had going on in our lives for four consecutive nights, Ira dedicated the infrequently-performed older number “Satellite”. The song had been requested earlier in the week by one of those every-show guys (our friend from the “Laz Archives“) and we were happy to see him get mention from stage. We’re streaming that song below. For the electric set, once again the band held back nothing and marched full energy through ninety minutes of noisy goodness. This show the set closer was “Blue Line Swinger”, which at fourteen minutes was not the longest version we’ve seen but it was certainly one of the tightest. My own personal highlight of the evening and of perhaps the entire run of shows came as the encore set began — a raging cover of Neil Young’s “Time Fades Away” which featured the shared riffs of Antietam’s Tara Key on guitar. And as she has often, Marilyn Kaplan closed the set and the week with her annual appearance with her son’s band to sing “My Little Corner of the World”. While the Bell House isn’t Maxwell’s, the venue certainly offers a number of charms that we hope make it become the “corner of the world” that hosts future Yo La Tengo shows, perhaps even next year’s Hanukkah celebration. We shall see.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the recording posted for December 14 and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: December 13, 2013 Bell House – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

During their expansive worldwide tour that consumed most of this year, Yo La Tengo tried an interesting concept: At every non-festival show, they would play the same song, “Ohm”, twice. The song would open the first, acoustic set, then pop up again somewhere in the middle of the noisier electric set that followed. It’s almost like they want to be sure we don’t miss the point. To paraphrase it, there is no point in resisting change.

Anyone who joined us for the band’s Hanukkah tradition at Maxwell’s last year, or in previous years, might well have nodded along to many of those lines from “Ohm” as they watched the band perched in front of the fanciful wooden forest on the much broader stage of the Bell House. Whether or not the band’s Hanukkah tradition survives, its spiritual home did not. The spirit at the Bell House on this first night contained both hope and regret. Even if that impossible-to-replicate intimacy of Maxwell’s was gone, even without the rotating cast of surprise opening acts and comedians and non-stop-wacky collaborations, we were still staring down four nights of sold-out shows by the ever-generous band, played to their hometown crowd. A band that, even as veterans go, came as road-tested as possible, arguably at the top of their powers.

Each of the four nights — each of which will be posted on this site in the coming days — followed the band’s tour-long acoustic/electric format, with only the Fade songs repeated (along with a few that cropped up as both acoustic and electric incarnations). Along with Ira’s hilarious banter during “Periodically Double or Triple”, the highlight of the acoustic portion was the cover of the Zombies’ “You Make Me Feel Good”, which made its only appearance of the tour. The electric set boasted the uncommonly played “Story of Jazz” and closed out on one of our favorite of the sprawling jam numbers, “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind”. Anyone who didn’t expect YLT to pull something out of their hat for the encore by that point shouldn’t have given up hope so easily. Bruce Bennett of Brooklyn garage rockers The A-Bones parachuted in for an encore of three classic covers: The Seeds’ “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine”, The Flamin’ Groovies’ “Slow Death” (a 2013 debut) and Arthur Lee’s “Luci Baines”. The night closed on the quiet but hopeful coda of “Big Day Coming”, a song that echoed that message from “Ohm”. No need to lose time resisting the flow of change. These four nights of the holiday season were meant for celebration.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the band’s longtime engineer Mark Luecke combined with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Nights 2, 3 and 4 will be posted in the coming days. Thanks, as always, to Yo La Tengo, Mark and their incredible crew, and to Jesse Jarnow for the setlist.

There’s not a ton more I can add about Yo La Tengo that hasn’t been said about them on this site already and recently, at that. Suffice it to say, they are a classic band who have only continued to grow and evolve with time, and any opportunity to see YLT is one worth taking. The band has been on an intense tour schedule for most of this year behind their latest, Fade, but they still sound as fresh as they did debuting the new material back in December at Maxwell’s. This one-hour set at the Solid Sound Festival is an abridged version of a full YLT show, but YLT still packed in a variety of great material, including the excellent combination of “Ohm” and “Blue Line Swinger” to close out the night. They will be hitting a number of other festivals and various shows in North America, the UK and Japan this summer, and we‘d recommend you not miss them if they’re in your city.

Site contributor Kubacheck recorded this set with MBHO cardiod microphones from near the soundboard. While the large room and the distance from the band were not ideal, the sound quality of the recording is nonetheless quite good. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: June 15, 2013 Maxwell’s – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When I first began going to Maxwell’s back some 25 years ago, it was to me just another of the excellent NYC-area clubs that hosted the bands I preferred. Its been the last decade where the club began to mean much more to me. While I was somewhat late to the Maxwell’s admiration party, it still hit me like a punch to the stomach when the news broke that the club would be closing for good at the end of July. In recent years as is well documented on the pages of this site, we’ve taken many trips over to Hoboken for some of the best shows I’ve seen in my entire life. The club became a home away from home — when I came in through the side door often much earlier than the time for doors, I was certain that I had a night of great music, good food, fine beer and welcome company ahead of me. Going to Maxwell’s was an escape of sorts, but more importantly it was about people — those that make a night of entertainment enjoyable in all aspects. The refreshing thing about Maxwell’s was that it was entirely free of the venue politics that plague many local venues. When I came in the door, I was welcome. And since I came so often, the staff were all familiar and friendly faces. I didn’t know all of their names, but every server, bartender, and bouncer were all the kind of people that you’d hope would run a music venue. Of particular note for me was Mike the ticket/door man who often allowed me to enter the venue early to set up equipment, and of course Carson Kopp, the venue’s head sound technician whose sound talents are well documented on this site but whose generosity, patience and sense of humor were always second to none. I expect that all of the people involved in this special place with land on their feet wherever they go, but somehow it will never be the same.

A large reason why Maxwell’s was the locale for so many of the special nights we’ve experienced was the “house band” — Yo La Tengo. We’ve seen them at times other than Hanukkah, but the vast majority of our YLT shows were during the eight day holiday. Due to some unforseen circumstances, on Saturday night a show originally billed as “Condo Fucks” in an opening slot became a two-set Yo La Tengo Maxwell’s show, and will be the final show of the band at its home venue. With that knowledge, the band’s entrance on stage in front of the red velvet curtain was instantly emotional. It was both hard to fathom and hard to accept that the band’s familiar position was its final night on this stage. Yo La Tengo has always had a keen awareness of its circumstances and its surroundings, and the setlist seemed uniquely fashioned for this night. Indeed, as “Mr. Tough” was dedicated to venue manager Todd Abramson, it occurred to me that the lyrics “we’ll forget about our problems / Ignore them for a little while / And leave our worries in the corner” quite well summarized the feeling of entering Maxwell’s for a night of music. While the weird sense of current enjoyment and the dread of the ending of something magical permeated my feelings throughout the set, it wasn’t until a beautiful quiet version of “Tom Courtenay” that the lump in my throat evolved into real tears. Its hard to lose something this special, but Yo La Tengo’s quiet first set was the cathartic remedy that we needed to help us accept our fate. After a break, the band returned with a full electric “Condo Fucks” set of garage-rock covers. It was exactly what was necessary at the exact right time — the chance to celebrate what Maxwell’s was really all about, no frills and unpretentious rock and roll simply for its own sake. The band’s final song, a super quiet and oh so appropriate cover of the Kinks’ “This Is Where I Belong” wasn’t so much a crying song as it was a wave goodbye. Ira Kaplan introduced the song by humbly noting that “this band does not exist without this club.” Indeed, much of the most important alternative rock of the last 30 years doesn’t either, and for that we can always thank and remember fondly Maxwell’s in Hoboken.

I recorded this set in the manner we’ve always been lucky to be permitted to record in this venue, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo is going to be on tour for the next several months and the dates are [HERE].
