Black Angels: March 16, 2012 SXSW at Hotel Vegan Austin TX – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Black Angels were technically a late addition at the Friday day show at Hotel Vegan. The band roster wasn’t announced until SXSW had already begun, but given that the band called Austin home, it was a welcome addition but not really a surprise. That being said, any opportunity to experience one of the premiere psych-rock bands around today on their home turf is a must see. The Black Angels have not released a new album since 2010’s superb Phosphene Dream, but the addition of two brand new songs to the setlist helped make this show special. We are streaming the opening track from Phosphene, “Bad Vibrations”, an outstanding version heavy in the reverb, sixties-style organ and haunting guitar lines.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser microphones mounted at the soundboard tent and mixed with a stereo board feed. The position of the tent on this day was very close to an outdoor bar, so there is some extra crowd noise not present on the other dates. With that caveat, Enjoy!

The Black Angels: July 15, 2011 Maxwell’s – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Shows at Maxwell’s are always a treat, in no small part because you get to spend quality time with a relatively “big” band in a venue much smaller than they normally play (we caught them at Bowery Ballroom not too long ago).  This show by The Black Angels – in town for a series of shows, including headlining the 4Knots Festival – fit that description.  Packing the 200-capacity room, the Angels blew out the room with their layered, reverb-heavy sound.  One could be forgiven for thinking they were a band out of Manchester or thereabouts rather than one of America’s top music towns, Austin, Texas – their baggy sound shares as much commonality with mid-90s UK rock as it does with the “psychedelic rock” tag the band usually finds stuck to them.  This set proved that the band could rock like a huge band even in a small room (and without the killer light show they had last time), with the big rockers like “Black Grease” getting obvious love from the Friday night crowd.  Unsurprisingly, the set focused heavily on their 2010 record, Phosphene Dream, which has earned them proper critical acclaim.  I could hope to see them again at Maxwell’s in the near future, but let’s face it, this band is probably headed for Terminal 5 (and good for them).

hi and lo and I recorded this set with a four-mic mix from our usual spot in the venue.  The band’s sound engineer would not permit us to utilize a soundboard feed, but the sound is nonetheless excellent.  Enjoy!

Black Angels: April 8, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Black Angels take their psychedelia very seriously. As the hosts of Austin Psych Fest and one time backing band for Psych legend Roky Erickson (13th Floor Elevators), the band certainly has the pedigree. But as we saw on Friday night at Bowery Ballroom, Black Angels also have the songs, the stage show, and the sound. From the opening intro music of “Good Vibrations” that warped into a reverbed and looped mutation of the song before the band dropped right into their own “Bad Vibrations” opener, it was quite clear that this would be more than just a “trippy” adventure, but a true journey through an authentic ninety-minute psychedelic musical show. The band has the obvious 60’s influences, including Roky and also some of the California sound, but also draws heavily from the eighties revivalists like The Cramps and The Gun Club. Each song provided a sonic burst of reverb and effects accompanied by a mesmerizing light show. The setlist included a nice selection from the band’s three full length albums, including seven songs from 2010’s Phosphene Dream (although oddly not the title track), and five songs from the debut album (stream “Black Grease” below). The persistent hum of the drone machine melded each song into the next before the close of the main set. The band was called back for three encores and closed with a feedback drenched “You in Color”.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the standard balcony rail location, and this recording is an authentic capture of the sound in the venue that evening. Enjoy!

The Black Crowes: October 19, 2013 The Capitol Theatre – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming Songs (Two Sources)

If there are two things that can be said about The Black Crowes’ live shows it’s that they’re consistent and damn good.  Being a fan since their first album, I can attest to having seen more than my fair share of BC concerts that have stuck in my memory and been added to my personal “best of” list.  Their acoustic shows, however, have been few and far between and I relish them like the rare fruits they are.  In addition to hearing old favorites in new arrangements that translate beautifully from the electric counterparts, I’ve noticed that the gents seem to take more risks and extend their collective reach a bit when playing these “unplugged” gigs.  The recent four-date run at The Capitol Theatre was certainly no exception.  With their vast catalog of original tracks and mining some deep and obscure material from the likes of Crazy Horse, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Pink Floyd, there were distinct surprises to be had on this evening.  The band itself had also expanded with performers Larry Campbell, Sam Bush and Joe Russo joining the group for the night, as well as Neal Casal and John Fullbright jumping in for the encore.  Between the added instrumentation, new songs and solid chops on display, the Crowes continue to be a potent live experience.

Set up in the taper’s section behind the soundboard at The Capitol Theatre, we were able to pull great recordings, albeit with a little more crowd noise than we like during some of the quieter songs.  As a result, we are offering both of our excellent quality sources for download: my Milab VM-44 Link cardioids and acidjack’s Schoeps MK41 supercardioids paired with his warm Aerco MP-2 preamp.  Enjoy!

The Black Crowes will be playing a series of electric shows at Terminal 5 beginning tonight.  We will be recording at least one of them and posting it next week.

The Black Crowes: April 6, 2013 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Black Crowes have never been critical darlings. From the beginning of their career in 1989, they were pilloried as too self-consciously “retro” — warmed-over by-the-numbers ’70s rock, at best, coupled with a love of self-indulgent jamming that sent Right Thinking Rock Critics (even ones who work for Maxim) running for the hills.

But while critics were busy dissing the band as weak imitators, fans were having none of it, buying tons of albums, packing their shows, and sending their videos (remember those?) into non-stop rotation on MTV. Was it a case of critics being smart and the masses being dumb? That can be the case, sometimes — plenty of bands that suck have huge followings. Still, it’s hard — for me, at least — to hear Chris Robinson belting out “She Talks To Angels”, or hear the opening chords of “Thorn In My Pride” and not think that maybe the Crowes can be declared fully “classic rock” — without the quotation marks.

The love for the band was on display for two weekend nights of very, very sold out shows at Terminal 5 last week, as the Crowes returned to the stage after their second hiatus. For this show, there was barely an inch to move on any of the venue’s three floors as multiple generations of fans came out to watch the band turn T5 into a Saturday night rager. Compared to recent past tours, this set focused more on their first two and best albums, Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.   Having last seen the band myself quite a while ago, I didn’t know what to expect. By a couple minutes in to the opening number, “Twice As Hard”, I knew the intervening years — filled with strife between the frequently-feuding Robinson brothers, as well as musical up and downs — hadn’t taken the vitality of this band down a tick. The band delivered some of the highest-energy songs — “Hard To Handle”, “Feelin’ Alright” and “Remedy” among them — early, before settling in for an acoustic interlude (with “She Talks To Angels”, of course) that led into a full-on thirteen-minute “Thorn in My Pride”, which proved to be only the second-longest jam of the night after the band closed out the main set with a seventeen-minute “Wiser Time” filled with twists and turns. The show ended on a mellow note with a cover of Ry Cooder’s “Boomer’s Story” followed by thunderous applause — the kind earned by hard work, not critical acclaim.

We are offering two separate recordings of this set — first, one with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod mics, as well as a second with MBHO KA200N cardiods, pointed in a tight pattern at the speaker stacks. Give both a listen and see which you prefer — or feel free, of course, to download both. Enjoy!

Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back four years at 2011. The following year (2012) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

Dead Meadow: February 11, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Before there was Wooden Shjips or Black Angels or Black Mountain, there was Dead Meadow who in the late 90s began to play psych rock in Washington DC in an era when the local hard rock was dominated by Dischord bands. Despite the stylistic clash with the music of the day, Dead Meadow nevertheless succeeded on talent and ingenuity. Fifteen years, a few personnel changes, and a move to LA later, the band is still producing intense stoner rock and recently released their eighth studio album Warble Womb (Xemu Records). Dead Meadow hasn’t played NYC in several years, but this week they were in town for two shows. We caught the Bowery Ballroom show on Tuesday night where Dead Meadow worked through a ninety minute set of exactly what we came to hear — a mix of old and new material, some spacey jamming, and outstanding sound quality. Given the weather, the crowd was not as packed as might have been expected in nicer climes, but the fans were certainly animated. There seemed to be a duel between the guy calling out for older material and the guy who yelled “play the record”. I guess the newer fan won, because the band added “1000 Dreams” from Warble even though it wasn’t on the setlist. We are streaming that track below because the band nailed the off-the-cuff selection. Dead Meadow’s tour continues through February with multiple East Coast and Midwestern dates, see “tour” at their website.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue, with the Sennheiser cards mounted in our perch to the left of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. We were fortunate that Dead Meadow FOH Chris Preston was with the band and provided a customized feed with well balanced guitars and effects. The result is that the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Austin band Holy Wave didn’t shy from the task of warming up the Music Hall of Williamsburg crowd last month before GOAT’s epic performance (that one here). Rocking a dense, intricate psychedelic style reminiscent of bands like The Black Angels and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the band played material from their current release, Evil Hits (a combination of their The Evil Has Landed and Knife Hits EPs) plus new material that we hope will see the light of day soon. Set against the backdrop of swirling live light projections, the band gave us a taste of what they had in store for the Austin Psych Fest, which they played later that week, and gave us an appropriate intro to the wild GOAT set that was to follow.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the GOAT recording, with MBHO microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Night Beats: August 6, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

Seattle’s Night Beats keep it simple. With a sound whose most obvious reference points are Roky Erickson-style Texas psych and garage rock, the three piece’s no-bullshit live show has gained an ever-increasing following. A look at who they’ve toured with – bands like the Black Lips, Black Angels, the Strange Boys and even Roky himself – tells their story pretty accurately. This show at Knitting Factory may have been on a Monday, but that didn’t slow down the dancing or thin out the crowd, who got to enjoy a very strong bill all night long (openers MMoss and K-Holes similarly killed it). The band continue to tour behind their 2011 self-titled debut LP on Trouble In Mind records, and this set featured a lot of it, including their current single, “Puppet On A String”.  Luckily, the band also delved into what there is of a “back catalog”, in this case the 2010 H-Bomb EP, including that track as well as one of my favorites “They Came In Through the Window”. I’m pretty sure I heard some new songs (or at least, ones I couldn’t identify from the EP and album) as well. Though similar in sound, Night Beats eschewed the onstage antics some of their brethren like the Black Lips, which made for fewer flying bodies and beer cans, but one hell of a show.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from Rob, the engineer at the Knitting Factory.  In true garage band form, the sound is raw, but an excellent representation of the night and a great listen. Enjoy!
