The Feelies: December 10, 2012 Maxwell’s – Flac/Mp3/Streaming

At this point chronologically, the Feelies v.3 has lasted almost as long as versions 1 or 2. But what has been consistent is that sound — the methodical, trance-like rhythms providing a backdrop for the melodic and precise guitar work of Glenn Mercer. Another consistent aspect of the band is their commitment to Maxwell’s and Hoboken. When Yo La Tengo came calling offering an opening gig to benefit their shared storm-tattered town, the Feelies were there on Night 3 to play and provide support to that show’s charity — this time the NJ Community Food Bank. The band then proceeded to play a blistering set and perhaps the longest opening gig for a Hanukkah show we’ve ever seen. But the crowd has no complaints, as the Feelies performed songs old and new with a clarity and purpose to behold. We’re streaming the duo of “Raised Eyebrows” and “Crazy Rhythms”, a segue that we’ve left intact. It encapsulated all that is right with the Feelies, ferocious duo-drums and a head-long crash into one of their oldest songs played at breakneck speed until it collapsed into a noise drenched finale of pure bliss.

I recorded this set in the same exact manner as the Yo La Tengo set from this night and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

The Feelies: September 12, 2009 Woodstock NY – Flac and MP3 Downloads (Streaming Sample)

Last week, The Feelies played their now regular July 4th shows at Maxwell’s and we missed them for the second year in a row due to a vacation. There are some decent photos of last week’s gigs here, and a review here. Although we caught one of the shows in 2008 (here), I guess we kind of feel like we let down the Feelies fans who come to nyctaper for recordings of their shows (we’ve done six). So, I’ve decided to dig into the vault for a little treat from last year. In September of 2009, The Feelies played a mini three-show “tour”, which included ATP, a show at the Bearsville Theatre, and a show at Southpaw (on nyctaper here). The ATP recording popped up on Dimeadozen, and we covered the Southpaw night, but until now no recording of the Woodstock show had appeared. A short while ago, the prolific East coast taper mikeL sent us this recording so that we could offer it to our readers.

Mike recorded the set with a pair of Audio Technica 825s set up fifteen feet from the stage and the result is a recording of great clarity and presence. Enjoy!

Feelies: November 21, 2009 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

As the band and venue perhaps most interrelated in rock music annals, the Feelies returned to Maxwell’s last night to perform a complete start to finish set of the album for which they are best known — 1980’s seminal Crazy Rhythms. The night brought out the old fans, and few local luminaries — we spotted Glenn Morrow, owner of Bar/None Records, the label that reissued Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth this Fall. Before proceeding through the album the Feelies performed an intense twelve-song first set which featured expert musicianship and quite a bit of animated play from Glenn Mercer. Opening with a letter-perfect VU’s “Sunday Morning”, the set was notable for some new songs, including “Bluer Skies” which debuted at the Whitney this Summer and “Time is Right” which debuted at Maxwell’s last Summer. Following the Crazy Rhythms set, the band returned for five encores including a rare “Last Roundup” and another run through the REM classic “Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars)”.

I recorded this set from the perfect location in this venue and utilized the four microphone rig. The sound quality in the venue, mixed by long-time Feelies FOH Andy, was quite excellent and the four microphones captured a recording of incredible depth. Enjoy!

Odds & Ends: Feelies T-Shirt Concert Winner, Upcoming Recordings, CMJ

September 24, 2009
By

The NYCTaper/In Sound contest to win a Feelies shirt is over, and the winner of the t-shirt is nyctaper reader Jordan Jackson. In Sound will mail out the t-shirt this week.

We have many recordings to post this week, along with many to attend. The Decemberists show at Terminal 5 was recorded by two correspondents and I am in the process of editing the raw wav files to offer the best possible recording. I recorded The Baseball Project/Minus 5/Steve Wynn IV show last night at Bowery and will post it as soon as I can get time with the computer! It was about two and half hours of music. But I will be at Polvo tonight, Yo La Tengo tomorrow, and The Rest on Saturday, so the earliest to be able to expect some new recordings is Saturday afternoon (earliest) to Sunday night.

We are also in the process of adding a ton of new Fall show to the schedule, so expect a new “Upcoming Events” post very soon.

Finally, the NYCTaper CMJ show is completely confirmed. Eight bands are on the bill, and every single one of them is fantastic. We are incredibly excited about the quality of this bill and will formally announce it in the next few days!

NYCTaper Contest: Win Feelies T-Shirt from Insound

In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of InSound, designer Mike Perry created ten different t-shirt images for 10 different classic bands. The Feelies are one of the ten bands, and nyctaper was selected exclusively to give away one free t-shirt to one of our lucky readers.

The winner will be announced here at nyctaper on September 24.

Feelies: September 13, 2009 Southpaw – Flac and MP3 Downloads

On the week that Bar None Records reissued both Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth, the Feelies played a weekend of shows in the New York area. On Friday, they played Crazy Rhythms from start to finish at All Tomorrow’s Parties (acidjack’s recording is here). Saturday’s show was a performance at the beautiful Bearsville Theatre in Woodstock. Last night, the celebratory weekend was completed with an absolutely monumental Feelies show at Southpaw. The band performed two sets that consisted of over two hours of music, but the most amazing aspect of the show was the encore set — the band returned on five separate occasions to perform a total of ten encores. Included in the show were the usual plethora of covers — the raging second set opener of Neil Young’s “Barstool Blues” and the Beatles “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide” (from Crazy Rhythms) among them — but there were also a few surprises including a teacher-mimics-student version of R.E.M.’s “Carnival of Sorts”.

The band was again well-served by the presence of long time sound pro Andy Peters, who navigated through a limited sound system to provide outstanding listening quality. We set up the four mics at the front of the railing above the floor which provided a direct line to the stacks. The resulting sound quality of this recording is quite excellent. Enjoy!

The Feelies at Southpaw Sept 13 – Tickets on Sale

July 11, 2009
By

Unlike last year’s July 4th run of shows, this year we missed the Feelies at Maxwell’s due to holiday travel. Fortunately, again like last year’s September shows, the Feelies will perform in NYC on September 13 at the relatively small Brooklyn venue Southpaw.

Tickets are now on sale for this show [here] and will likely go quickly.

Feelies to Perform Crazy Rhythms at NY ATP

March 13, 2009
By

The Feelies announced a short while ago that they have committed to perform the complete Crazy Rhythms album from start to finish at the NY version of the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival.

The ATP Festival takes place from September 11 through September 13 in Monticello NY. The complete line-up (thus far) for this event is posted [here].

nyctaper recorded The Feelies three times last year, on July 1 at Maxwell’s, July 4 at Battery Park, and again on September 20, 2009 at Music Hall.

Feelies September 20, 2008 Music Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

If the July Feelies concerts at Maxwell’s and Battery Park were celebratory affairs simply because the band was back and sounded great, last night’s concert at The Music Hall of Williamsburg was special for a whole different reason — the Feelies absolutely rocked. This was a band that did not sound as if they were playing their 5th gig after a decade and half of “down time”. Last night, the Feelies were tight as always, but added a significant amount of energy and animation to the stage show. Perhaps spurred on by the boisterous and vocal Saturday night crowd, each song seemed to reach a trademark Feelies crescendo with extra energy. “Deep Fascination” and “Slipping (Into Something)” in particular evolved into truly joyous cacophony.

When we glanced at the soundboard booth prior to the show and saw the longtime Feelies soundboard tech Andy behind the board, we knew the sound in the venue would be terrific and we were not disappointed. This show was mixed to perfection and featured a full and rich soundstage. Our recording was captured from a prime location and we are extremely indebted to the talents of Andy for the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

The Feelies perform again tonight at Bowery Ballroom!

Feelies – Two NYC Shows Announced Today

July 29, 2008
By

As we informed our readers last week, The Feelies will perform again in NYC this Fall. Today it was announced that The Feelies will play Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 20, and Bowery Ballroom on September 21. Tickets for both of these concerts go on sale on Friday August 1.

Our recording of the Feelies reunion at Maxwell’s and our correspondent recording at Battery Park have been two of the more popular downloads in recent months at nyctaper, and the download requests include two from members of the band! We hope to again capture this legendary band’s return to performance in September.
