Gunn-Truscinski Duo: April 16, 2022 Three Lobed Recordings 21st Anniversary, Duke University (Durham, NC)

May 5, 2022
By

Steve Gunn has been a key presence in the Three Lobed universe since the 2006 release of the Heavy Elements CD. His dynamic growth as an artist in the years since — including his current Matador-backed full band work — has been a thrill to watch, to the point that it’s hard to pick favorites among his work. That said, it’s hard not to consider his duo work with John Truscinski among the very best. As this set demonstrates, improvisation between these two is almost an unspoken language at this point. Fans of the band’s most recent LP, Soundkeeper, which includes one of my Union Pool recordings, can attest that the band’s live improvisations can be some of their best work. Tonight’s first song was one such moment — an untitled new number that already feels like a forthcoming GTD classic. As to the rest of the set, it consisted of exactly those — “Banh Mi Ringtones” and “Ocean Parkway,” both from Three Lobed’s second GTD LP, Ocean Parkway. These renditions were as inspired and electric as the entire evening, perhaps never more so that the climactic interplay around the eight-minute mark of “Banh Mi.” This whole night — the whole festival — celebrated all that’s right with independent music. John and Steve are certainly a big part of that.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V mics mounted on the center of the balcony, with a soundboard feed from Christopher Scully-Thurston’s mix. It sounds like it.

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: July 19, 2018 Elsewhere

July 24, 2018
By

Watching the interplay of Steve Gunn and John Truscinski onstage, you get the sense that these two are hand-in-glove players, to the point you almost can’t imagine them playing with anyone else (though they do). That interplay is part of what makes all of their Three Lobed releases so special. Each of them, including their latest and most adventurous to date, Bay Head, feels like it sprung forth fully-formed, a jam session whose synchrony had to be made permanent. On this night at Elsewhere, after kicking off with their new drone track “Road Bells,” the duo launched into straight into a version of “Banh Mi Ringtones” that felt like just that, with the action peaking in a furious Gunn solo. The Ocean Parkway love continued with that title track, followed by the gorgeous “Seagull for Chuck Berry.” Things came to a close in a similar vein to the show we saw at Union Pool in January, the sprawler “Gunter,” featuring a new drone-based intro. Even that relatively new track felt re-imagined in the moment, and that’s the glory of Gunn-Truscinski duo. Fortunately, this is one of those jam sessions whose synchrony was documented.

I recorded this set from the soundboard cage with a board feed from house engineer Chris, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: January 9, 2018 Union Pool

Until the surprise announcement of Bay Head from Gunn-Truscinski Duo last year, it seemed like these guys may never put out another record together. Their last platter, Ocean Parkway, was released back in 2012 and besides a very special gig for the Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen, the pair had been awfully quiet for a long time. Fortunately for us Bay Head picks up right where they left off, proving that when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski get a room together, it’s a rare magic that results. And speaking of rare, the duo aren’t doing many shows together in support of the record, but we were lucky enough to capture this set from Union Pool last week. Old classics “Bahn Mi Ringtones” and “Ocean Parkway” brought back memories of Zebulon gigs past, while new songs “Sugar,” “Seagulls for Chuck Berry,” and “Gunter” were captivatingly fresh.

If you’re in LA, be sure to grab tickets for their show with Body/Head.

And if you’re in Brooklyn, Union Pool has another free show scheduled for this Tuesday, Jan. 16, with the inimitable Sir Richard Bishop headlining.

I recorded this from our usual spot with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Doug. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Though his solo career has been the (very successful) focus of late, many of us were first exposed to the virtuosic guitar playing of Steve Gunn via his perfect pairing with the drummer John Truscinski. The duo produced a pair of outstanding albums on Three Lobed RecordingsSand City and the masterstroke Ocean Parkway, each with an indelible connection to desert blues, Indian ragas, American folk, and psychedelia. By our count, though, their last live shows doing this music were in 2012, including the Hopscotch Music Festival and 285 Kent shows that appeared on this site.

That made it especially exciting to experience the group’s return to a stage where we’ve seen them before — at King’s in Raleigh, NC. This time, we were celebrating the sixteenth anniversary of Three Lobed Recordings, and in a sense, the reissue of both of the duo’s albums by the label this year. Building on Gunn’s dynamic afternoon solo set, the pair gifted us three songs filled with precise interplay and hypnotic guitar work. Gunn dug deep on the guitar work during “Ocean Parkway” and “Banh Mi Ringtones,” the latter’s signature melody leading the pair into an explosive, noisy jam that iced the cake for those of us who love seeing these two play together about equally to our love for Gunn’s solo outings. After “Banh Mi” wound back to its subtler beginnings, the pair closed with “Wythe Raag” from Sand City, which managed to evoke both the namesake Brooklyn street and legendary musical style for which it’s named. That number likewise came in the three parts, building to another sprawling noise climax before its mystical, melodic closing. As Gunn prepares to tour his new record, we hope these two will find time to continue to work together — it’s something not to be missed.

I recorded this set as with the other sets from the day, with a combination of multiple soundboard channels from engineer Brad  Womack’s feed, together with onstage Schoeps MK22 mics and mounted MBHO mics in the center of the room. The sound quality is simply phenomenal. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Trio: September 12, 2012 285 Kent (Issue Project Room Benefit for Tom Carter) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

LEARN HOW YOU CAN HELP TOM CARTER – BY BUYING MUSIC AND DONATING TO HIS MEDICAL EXPENSES – HERE

The guitarist Steve Gunn joined longtime collaborator John Truscinski (with whom he comprises the unit Gunn-Truscinski Duo), and bassist Justin Tripp (along with Laura Ortman on violin for most of the set) for a very special trio performance to benefit the guitarist Tom Carter. Carter, who has worked on many projects over the years but is best known for his work in Charalambides, contracted a serious form of pneumonia while on tour in Europe, and has incurred significant medical bills while being treated in intensive care and, more recently, at recovery centers in both Germany and the United States. This show at 285 Kent, sponsored by the Issue Project Room, was designed to raise funds for Carter’s ongoing recovery. The community of avant-garde guitarists and musicians is incredibly tight-knit and supportive, and this contribution in New York was one of many efforts to support Tom around the world.

This set consisted of both new material and work from Gunn’s two most recent LPs for Three Lobed Recordings, one highlight of which was “The Lurker”, Gunn’s side from the out-of-print Three Lobed 10th anniversary box set. For that song, Gunn & co. were joined by Marc Orleans, who most recently collaborated with Carter on the Northern Spy Records release Eleven Twenty Nine. The song, like much of Gunn’s work, showcases a range of styles and unique phrasing, and Orleans’ participation made it all the more memorable. Streaming below is a rollicking full-band version of the 2012 Gunn classic “Trailways Gramble”, which appeared on Three Lobed’s compilation of work of eight outstanding American underground guitarists, Eight Trails, One Path. While a lot of this night’s crowd may have been there for the headliner, Thurston Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving, it was perhaps this unique collaboration of guitar talents that was the most fitting tribute to Carter and the work he has done to this point in his life. We wish Carter a speedy recovery, and encourage you to donate by buying music, donating via PayPal, or attending other benefit shows, all of which can be done by clicking the link at the top of this post.

nyctaper and I recorded this set in our usual manner for this venue with Sennheiser MKH-8040 microphones and a soundboard feed. While 285 Kent can always be a bit of a challenge with quieter acts, we feel this is a recording of excellent quality. Enjoy!

The Chelsea Light Moving set was also recorded and will be posted this week.

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: September 7, 2012 Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

October 2, 2012
By

The duo of the guitarist Steve Gunn and drummer John Truscinski, better known as Gunn-Truscinski Duo, was a perfect closer to the Three Lobed Recordings/WXDU Day Show during the Hopscotch Music Festival. The pair epitomizes some of the highlights of the Three Lobed aesthetic – rhythmically complex, guitar-based music with psychedelic overtones that occupies no obvious musical niche, that advances the state of its art while giving a subtle nod to its forebears. With no words sung during their set, it is still easy to locate Gunn-Truscinski as distinctly American; although he melds Eastern elements to his work, Gunn is nonetheless a successor to this country’s folk tradition. What we got at King’s Barcade on this fine Friday afternoon was a short barnstormer of a set consisting of three of the five songs from the duo’s latest release on Three Lobed, Ocean Parkway.  Gunn and Truscinski kicked off with perhaps that record’s best song, “Banh Mi Ringtones”, given some extended jamming treatment, followed by “Don’t Lean On Door” and “Ocean Parkway”. For those who would doubt that an instrumental guitar and drum duo can unrepentantly rock, I submit this recording as Exhibit A.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the other sets from this show, with Schoeps MK5 microphones onstage in the omnidirectional setting and a soundboard feed provided by the King’s staff. As I was able to get the mics closer to the performers for this set, this is one of the best quality-wise of the day. Enjoy!

Thanks to WXDU, Cory Rayborn and Three Lobed. Also check out our post of Gunn and Truscinski playing as a trio in support of Tom Carter, which is coming soon.

Steve Gunn: December 9, 2016 Bell House

December 11, 2016
By

Watching Steve Gunn and his latest band play this performance at The Bell House reminded me of the below Gunn performance with Alex Bleeker & the Freaks at the “Play Dead” show that we captured in 2015. Gunn’s music at the time — consisting of solo guitar records, his duo work in Gunn-Truscinski Duo, and his two Paradise of Bachelors LPs, Time Off and Way Out Weather — wasn’t necessarily the work of someone who revered the Dead. But as he and Bleeker’s band played “Wharf Rat” that night, it all clicked. Part of what continues to make the Grateful Dead so special is that there are multiple entry points to the band, a whole universe of styles and vibes contained within individual tours and individual shows and, even, individual songs. Gunn wasn’t a person who mimicked the band’s style(s), at all, but he had absorbed many of their lessons. And this show, more than most of his I have seen, proved it.

This show, the band’s final of the year after a long slog of touring and greatly increased exposure thanks to Gunn’s Matador Records debut, Eyes On the Lines, was my first time seeing most of Eyes On the Lines in the live setting, despite having seen Gunn several times this year. Maybe it was the hometown crowd, whose love is unconditional and the opposite of the “play the hits” mentality of the festival crowds, maybe it was the finely honed interplay among the musicians, maybe it was just them saying “fuck it” and doing things the way they wanted — whatever it was, Gunn and Co. came out and turned even some of the relatively concise material of Eyes On the Lines into life-affirming jams that both challenged and enlightened. What’s most gratifying about watching an artist that you’ve followed for a while keep doing this after achieving his greatest commercial popularity to date is to know how unafraid of it he is, how resolutely true to himself.

Gunn bookended the show with stripped-down songs, starting things off with a fourteen-minute solo acoustic “Old Strange” that was a classic mix of Gunn’s earnest lyrics and desert blues guitar, with the “Wildwood” encore with James Elkington on the electric and Steve on the acoustic. While hearing the new songs — especially a personal favorite, “Ancient Jules” — was a blast, what also stuck me was once again how the music cut through the heaviness of the political moment without flinching from it. Gunn’s impassioned intro to “Park Bench Smile” about inclusion and “fighting what the fuck’s happening” hit its mark, but the song, as rendered, spoke for itself. A noisy, messy, emphatic rendition of the song, it felt like so much of this moment, chaotic but, ultimately, resolved into something hopeful, defiant, and right. What a way to end a year.

I recorded this set with engineer David Hurtgen’s house mix combined with Schoeps MK41V hypercardiod microphones. David’s regular work with the venue shows here, as the sound is dialed in and excellent. Enjoy!

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, and when 2015 goes up in January it will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

You know it’s something very, very special when Steve Gunn and John Truscinski (who plays with Gunn in Gunn-Truscinski Duo and their new trio arrangement) team up with Irish guitar phenom Cian Nugent and Jason Meagher (of, among others, No Neck Blues Band and D. Charles Speer & the Helix) for the North American debut of their collaboration Desert Heat. Hopscotch Music Festival is always a special time, but what drew me back for a second year, and will again for a third, was the Three Lobed Recordings/WXDU day show, held again this year at King’s Barcade. Among several rare collaborations and one-time appearances, Desert Heat was one of the most hotly anticipated, and by the time these players took the stage, the medium-sized venue had a line out front. Give it one listen and you’ll hear why; Gunn and Nugent are among the most creative and exciting guitarists and songwriters of this era, and both were on fire for this special performance that showed off the A side from the new Cat Mask at Huggie Temple 12-inch, the band’s sole release, before delving into some unknown territory with a new long form jam currently titled “Desert Whythe”. To top it all off, the band tore through Velvet Underground’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin'” with their own special wall-of-guitars twists, with Gunn handling the vocal duties. On a day filled with outstanding performances (many of which will be shared here over time or released by Three Lobed), this was undeniably one of the highest of the highlights.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed that I customized for both this recording and the simulcast on Duke University’s radio station WXDU, plus Schoeps MK4V microphones right at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding; easily one of a handful of the best recordings I have ever shared on this site. Enjoy!
