Suuns: February 11, 2017 Saint Vitus (Early Show)

February 14, 2017
By

It’s not easy to be a live band like Suuns. When you make spare, often trancelike music that relies on repetition, fueled by loops and electronics as well as live players, you need to be more than competent on your instruments; you need to be technically almost flawless. Their music can indeed put you in a trance, but the communion is broken if anything — almost anything — is out of time or introduced at the wrong moment. The amazing thing about Suuns is that nothing ever is — if “precision” was their band name instead, it wouldn’t be wrong. Their latest album Hold/Still continues their streak of infallible, tight production, made all the more impressive this time by the fact that they reputedly recorded most of it live. Hearing the songs live, it’s somewhat easier to believe. Suuns songs often tend toward modern paranoia and anxiety, but in execution of them, the band members’ melding of the human and technological is at ease.

On this winter night, the band played two full sold-out sets at Saint Vitus, an intimate, appropriate clime for the band’s dark, almost claustrophobic sound. Drawing on elements of krautrock and electronic music, Suuns’ sound is as distinct as it is penetrating. If escapist fare like “La La Land” and whatever pabulum won most Grammys last night is hailed as the right cultural output for our times precisely due to its unreality, Suuns owes equal claim to the title precisely because it sounds like just this moment. When vocalist Ben Shemie intones the single lyric from “Resistance,” over a fractured guitar line and its vaguely militaristic backbeat, you almost forget that this song was actually written in 2015. It meant something different to me when I first saw it, nearly two years ago to the date.

To that end, another exciting song to see come to fruition was “Infinity,” a number the band has worked on in various forms for several years, but finally laid down for Hold/Still. After a solid dose of newer material for the bulk of the set, Suuns took us back to their first record, Zeroes QC, for a bit, with “Arena” making an appearance, and the set closing with one of their best early songs, “Pie IX.” If Hold/Still is any guide, this band’s next few years are going to be equally fertile ones.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Suuns seem to have almost grown into the current moment, what with their reliance on atmospheric electronics to put a new spin on Joy Division-y guitar rock. We first saw the band in 2011, at south Brooklyn’s tiny-but-sweet Rock Shop, where they proved themselves ready for more. On this night at Rough Trade, coming off their second proper album, Images du Futur, Suuns gave an assured, dialed-in performance. The bill co-featured Chicagoans Disappears, and the pair made a perfect match, with Suuns’ own slow evolution on display right after their contemporaries’. The band’s live approach is an even slower burn than their albums, built together from segue elements that don’t appear on the records, allowing sounds to linger for extra minutes. There wasn’t an encore break on this night, so much as a break in the action while the last notes held on, waiting for the band’s return. Coming from one of the world’s most acclaimed music cities (Montreal), perhaps it’s not surprising that Suuns put so much effort into their live show. Though Images du Futur is still what they’re touring, the band has already moved beyond it, playing four new songs, three of which I believe are tentatively titled “Delay”, “Resistance” and “Pray” (the fourth is anyone’s guess). If those new songs are any guide, Suuns intend to keep doing what they’re doing, only getting better at it over time. It’s no shock that the crowd got most into Images’ strongest track, “2020”, but there were plenty of other good moments, including the closer on “Edie’s Dream”, a hypnotic, almost-pretty song amidst the dark tones in the band’s catalog.

Suuns are off the road for now, but be sure to catch them next time they’re through. It’ll be worth it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed from Suuns’ touring engineer, whose name would be appreciated if you know it. The sound quality is the equal of the Disappears recording, meaning it is flawless. Enjoy!

When acidjack recorded Suuns in January at Rock Shop, he noted the versatility of the band and the “controlled intensity” that the band brings to each song. By December, when I recorded their show at Webster Hall opening for The Antlers, Sunns seem to have perfected that approach. In one of the best-received opening sets we’ve seen in quite some time, Suuns began with the new 12″ b-side “Red Song” (streaming below), which presaged the compelling tension and release of the post-rock they delivered in spades. The balance of the setlist included much of their excellent 2010 release Zeroes QC (Secretly Canadian Records) and one new song. We expect that the continued development of this talented and imaginative quartet will bring to them to larger stages and audiences — it won’t be long before they’ll play Webster again as the headliner.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Antlers set from the same show, and the sound quality is superb.

Montreal’s Suuns are one ambitious, exciting band. If you punched up any random 30-second clips of tracks from their debut LP, Zeroes QC, you could encounter any number of distinct musical ideas. You might find the Zeppelin-on-acid riffs that are the foundation of “Armed for Peace,” or the brooding, addiction-nightmare hiss of the vocals over a spare beat on “Up Past the Nursery,” or even the slowed-down dubstep beat on “Pie IX”. The point being, Suuns make angular, twisted art rock without a single stylistic straightjacket. From the get-go, this brash set at Rock Shop set a dark mood; the opening number “Skyscraper” blistered us with its marshal, repetitive drumbeat and bassline, clanging keyboard riff and frontman Ben Shemie’s seething, ravaged vocal. Whether during the tightly-wound intro to “Pie IX” or the door-blowing assault of the set’s closer, the eight-minute “Sweet Nothing,” Suuns held our attention with their controlled intensity. They are a challenging band in the best of ways, unconcerned with pop convention or pandering. And although it is true that they can veer dizzyingly between tempos, styles and structures, their talent is equal to their ideas.

I recorded this set from our usual location in this outstanding venue, with the Schoeps microphones and a soundboard feed from the Rock Shop’s team. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

List of All Available NYCTaper Recordings – 2012 Posts

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, and when 2015 goes up in January it will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

List of All Available NYCTaper Recordings – 2011 Posts

This is a rejuvenation of the lists we used to do in the early days of the site. I’m trying to get every year up in this category, so this is a look back four years at 2011. The following year (2012) will be available soon, and 2015 will go up in January. That will complete a full listing of the entire NYCTaper archives and make available every recording in our history only two clicks away. Again, don’t take this as an invitation to download massive quantities of recordings. If I find someone downloading 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll block your IP address.

Disappears – February 28, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/ALAC/MP3/Streaming

We’ve been on the Disappears train for a while now, but the band has taken things up another notch with their latest song cycle, Irreal. Backing away from the progression of the last few records, including the excellent Era from 2013, Irreal retreats into the darkness, trading some of the band’s more propulsive melodies for deeper textures and adding to the sense of gloom that’s always been a part of the band’s sound. If that doesn’t sound like the ideal soundtrack for a Saturday night to you, though, you’re wrong.

Disappears and Canadian fellow travelers Suuns sold out this double bill at Rough Trade, and anticipation had peaked by the time Disappears took the stage with the clanging, slow burn of “Interpretation”, the leadoff track from Irreal. It made for a daring but great choice, sucking the crowd in before picking the pace of with Era’s “Elite Typical”. From there, the setlist jumped across the band’s catalog, with the Irreal songs strengthening the older material by providing a change of pace and tone, giving us a chance to appreciate the layers of sound the band built up around Noah Leger’s laser-sharp percussion. But just as soon as a song like “I/O” lulls you into a trance, “Ultra” comes back and smacks you sideways. That dynamic continued for the hour, and gave the show a dimension that will serve them well on the rest of this tour. The band’s current engagements are on the West Coast, with Hookworms, which is another double bill not to be missed.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones, an Aerco custom preamp, and a dialed-in soundboard feed from the Rough Trade engineer Kam Biehl. The sound quality is outstanding, probably our best recording yet from this venue. Enjoy!
