As one-half of one of the best songwriting duos of the latter half of the twentieth century, Glenn Tilbrook could easily coast on his merits into a comfortable retirement. But Tilbrook last year released one of his strongest records in decades Happy Ending that could rival the finest output of the Squeeze oeuvre and he is currently on tour in the US through the entire month of October. We were fortunate to catch one of the two shows he played at City Winery last week. Glenn was in great form from the start, engaging the crowd with his very Brit sense of humor and meticulous guitar work. We were most delighted to hear that Glenn’s sweet tenor is as strong and clear as it was the first time we Squeeze back in 1981 (Pier 84), the Mercury Lounge in 1996 and through the time when they appeared at the Nokia Theatre in 2007. On this night, he played two sets and nearly two hours of music featuring the strong new songs (“Everybody Sometimes”), material from his Fluffers period and of course a very healthy dose of Squeeze classics. City Winery is blessed with an excellent sound system and good views (along with some amazing wine) and this night really could not have been more enjoyable. In November, he will tour with his writing partner Chris Difford in the UK, and it was announced at this show that the duo will come to the US in May of 2015. We very much expect to be there then.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted directly behind the soundboard and blended with an extremely tastily mixed soundboard feed provided by house FOH Jack O’Hara. The sound quality is quite superb. Enjoy!

In the early days, I did these lists of all of the recordings for a given year at the site. I hadn’t done one since 2009. Lately, there have been requests to continue to post these lists since it gives people easy access to the archives. So here is 2014. I’ll work backwards to previous years until the entire site is cataloged. Please don’t take this as an invitation to download vast quantities of recordings at once. That’s just gluttonous and the site and the server can not handle massive concurrent downloads. If I find someone downloading like 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll just block your IP address, its that simple.

Chris Difford May 13, 2008 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads

On some level, it has to be quite disconcerting to play a room the size of Maxwell’s and have literally every single person in the room singing along with every classic song. At Maxwell’s Tuesday night, Chris Difford seemed relaxed and slightly amused at the fan participation, and indeed borrowed the crowd to help him through some of the harder Squeeze vocals normally assigned to Glen Tilbrook’s tenor. Difford’s new album The Last Temptation of Chris features several strong numbers that were performed, including the poignant “Battersea Boys”, but the intimate setting was most powerful during the crowd’s many singalongs.

There is a story behind my permission to record this show. My initial email to Chris was during the Squeeze tour last year, and he wondered whether I meant taping “like the deadhead way”. Later, when I explained the interactive and promotional aspects of the site, he was for the idea. So thanks to Mr. Difford and to the Maxwell’s crew. The recording is a fine mix of the very boisterous audience and the very well-mixed soundboard. Enjoy!

Squeeze – August 2, 2007 Nokia Theatre – Lossless Download

August 3, 2007

Well, maybe 1988 is over, but 1981? Squeeze on Pier 84 in the Summer of 1981 is one of my favorite old concert experiences. The current reunion tour is essentially to promote the re-release of the back catalog and the new compilation Essential Squeeze. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook have written some of the most engaging and enjoyable pop songs in the last three decades, and the songs still hold up particularly well as the best of them were performed tonight.

I recorded this concert from the middle of the floor, using my clip-on microphones. This recording was not captured with pro-quality equipment, and it generally does not measure up to the sonic standards of other recordings on this site. However, it is certainly an enjoyable listen of a terrific concert.

The photograph above is courtesy of the excellent Squeeze fan site Packet of Three.

This recording is no longer available at nyctaper. I’m sure you can find it somewhere on the web if you look hard enough.
