Diamond Rings: October 21, 2010 NYCTaper CMJ Day Party – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

When we recorded Diamond Rings back at a ToddP show in July, we said we were witnessing a rising star in the making.  After a CMJ this year that saw his performances regularly packed (including this one), this one-man-band (John O’Regan of Toronto, Canada) is well on his way to being a household name.  Regan’s glammed-up, synth-driven songs are instantly catchy – witness the bouncy “On Our Own” or the more melancholy lead-off track of this set, “Wait and See”.   O’Regan’s songs have an obvious ’80s influence – he could easily share a stage with Depeche Mode, New Order, The Cure or even the Smiths and not feel out of place.  Although there is also a definite back-to-the-future aspect to his androgynous look, O’Regan’s star quality reminds me of someone quite current – Lady Gaga.  He has risen on the indie circuit, sure, but O’Regan has the broader potential to be a pop artist in the best sense – someone whose music is honest, interesting and accessible, but who isn’t afraid of attention.  No wonder Diamond Rings is a one-person act – O’Regan is incandescent on his own.  We thank Diamond Rings for sharing our unofficial CMJ day party with us this year, and encourage you to check out his new record, Special Affections, before your friends are telling you all about it six months from now.

I recorded this set in the same manner as our other CMJ sets.  This type of music is somewhat easy to record anyway, but even given that, this recording is truly flawless.  I only wish, as with all of our CMJ sets, that it were longer!  Enjoy!

Common Prayer: October 21, 2010 NYCTaper CMJ Day Party – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

NYCTaper favorites Common Prayer were a much-appreciated addition to the NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party.   Frontman Jason Russo has been involved in a number of other outstanding projects, from psych-rockers Hopewell to the legendary Mercury Rev, but Common Prayer have a unique appeal, with excellent songcraft that has a radio-ready pop immediacy (including on the song “Hopewell”, a reference to both the town of Hopewell, NY and Russo’s other band). Russo and partner Alexandra Marvar’s songs have an exuberant, whimsical quality that evidences a bit of the British influence I also heard in Mercury Rev.  In addition to three other songs from their new record There Is A Mountain, the band closed out with a very special rendition of the Talking Heads’ “Love-Building On Fire.”  These songs have stayed stuck in my head for days (no small feat considering the $3 Sixpoint beers flowing throughout our event!).  For more Common Prayer, check out the band’s recent set at Rock Shop, also recorded in excellent quality, as well.  Enjoy!

I recorded this set in the same manner as our other CMJ Day Party sets, with the DPA mics mounted just in front of and above the stage and a stereo soundboard feed.  The sound is once again outstanding (with a couple of small spots of interference from the band’s cell phones).

Soft Black: October 21, 2010 NYCTaper CMJ Day Party – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

I first saw Soft Black at Blake Luley’s Gaza Benefit Show this summer, and I was instantly blown away by frontman Vincent Cacchione’s well-crafted songs that married garage riffs to folk-tinged vocals.  I decided to invite the band to play our NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party that same night.  A large crowd turned up for Soft Black despite a set time in the middle of the day.  For a minute there, we were worried that they wouldn’t even have a chance to play; the band’s drummer and bassist were missing and Cake Shop was adamant about keeping sets on-time (as another showcase was scheduled that night).  Rather than waste time, Cacchione gave the audience a treat, delivering a solo rendition of one of the band’s best songs, “Ashtray Christ”, followed by a new number, “And I Walked Along” that is set to appear on the band’s forthcoming record.  Cacchione began the song solo, with the band members (still minus the bassist) joining midstream for maximum impact.   By the time the rocking “I Am An Animal” was played, the full band was onstage.  Although the set ended too soon (albeit with a great version of “The Girl Who Ate Her Own Heart”), Soft Black’s set was undeniably a success.

I recorded this set in the same manner as The Courtesy Tier recording, with the DPA microphones mounted to the ceiling just in front of the stage and a soundboard feed.  As with that recording, the sound quality is outstanding.  Enjoy!

The Courtesy Tier: October 21, 2010 NYCTaper CMJ Day Party – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

I was introduced to The Courtesy Tier through our friends at Backyard Brunch Sessions, so while I knew they wrote excellent songs, I didn’t realize how hard they could actually rock.  The duo of Omer Liebovitz on vocals and guitar and Layton Weedeman on drums and backing vox plays heavy, 70s-inspired rock that, even at 1:30 in the afternoon, had the power get people out of their seats.  We could not have asked for a better act to kick off the NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party – guys with great attitudes, stellar music and an obvious love of what they do.  Each of the four songs in this short set is a standout, perhaps none moreso than the closer, “Cold,” which the band also did an acoustic version of during their Backyard Brunch set.  The band should be introducing their first full-length record to the world soon.  We recommend you give it a listen, along with the singles and EPs available for sale at their website.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones connected to a stud on the ceiling directly in front of the stage, combined with a soundboard feed for the vocals.  The results are outstanding.  Enjoy!  We recorded all 12 sets at the NYCTaper show, and will post them all soon.

The Loom: October 10, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

October 15, 2010
By

The Loom have been consistent favorites of this site almost since its inception.  Their intricate arrangements and stellar musicianship truly shine in the live setting, and the band members’ dedication and good attitudes never go unnoticed.  Going into the CMJ Music Festival this week, they have already been hailed in the New York Times as a “next big thing”, especially if your indie rock proclivities lean toward the folkier side of things.  We couldn’t agree more.

One of the best aspects of the Backyard Brunch Sessions is that these stripped down sets rapidly expose musicians one way or the other – the mediocre bands cannot hide behind technology, while the elemental talents of the great ones are all the more obvious.  The Loom, clearly, are the real deal, an act greater than the sum of extremely talented parts.  Sarah Renfro and John Fanning’s vocals were spot-on, and bassist Dan Desloover showed off his talents on a home-made upright bass (made of a wash basin) that he cobbled together especially for the occasion.  There was not a weak moment in their set, though I was perhaps most captivated by the elegant rendition of “The First Freeze” that even some, er, “local antics” (listen to the banter track) could not disrupt.  We wish The Loom a great success this week at CMJ and beyond.  They have a new album on the way shortly – don’t miss it – as well as shows coming up at several local venues.

I recorded this set with six microphones strategically placed around the band, with Schoeps hypercardiods targeting vocals and guitars, DPA cardiods picking up the horns, bass and percussion, and DPA omnidirectional mics picking up more percussion and the overall sound of the yard.  The sound quality is among my favorite of all of my recordings.  Enjoy!

Oh Land: October 10, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 14, 2010

When we suggested to our friends at the Backyard Brunch Sessions that they showcase a Danish electro-pop artist that we had previously raved about on this site, we were met with a bit of skepticism.  Nobody was sure that the band’s reliance on densely layered electronics could be abandoned for the acoustic backyard setting.  We insisted that the quality of Oh Land’s songs – and her incipient star power (you may have seen her recently in Vogue, Nylon or Style.com lately) – were worth it.  Truth be told, our hosts did compromise a little – Nanna Øland Fabricius and her band did bring along a few plug-in items.  And, as we predicted, they gave us a stunning set that was radically different than anything that had been in this Bushwick backyard before.   For this show, the band specially rehearsed heavily reworked versions of the songs that wowed us at Brooklyn Bowl back in June, and have since played to Fashion Week crowds at private gigs, and at opening gigs for Mates of State in the U.S.  Squeezed together on a park bench, surrounded by a drum, omnichords, a toy keyboard, and a mixer, these semi-acoustic versions gave a new dimension to each of Nanna’s songs.  This unique set will not likely be repeated again, and even better, it included a new song that we had not heard before, “Rainbow.”  We expect the band to be back to their more “traditional” setup when they play another BBS-related show at Brooklyn Bowl on November 8, which will also feature The Canon Logic, Arms, The Courtesy Tier, and Fatty Acid.  Expect to see an EP from Oh Land released stateside in October on Epic Records.

I recorded this set by mic’ing Nanna with small DPA omnidirectional mics on her collar, and two DPA cardiod mics (Danish mics for a Danish singer, I suppose) placed on either side of the musicians.  Despite some occasional mild handling noise from Nanna’s hair brushing the mic surface, the recording is outstanding. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: October 6, 2010 Highline Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

October 10, 2010

[iPhone4 photo by acidjack]

After the 78-minute set of Built To Spill that we saw this July at Irving Plaza, we were worried that the band had decided people were over long sets of theirs.  Thankfully, this Wednesday’s show at the Highline Ballroom was back to their usual set-length standards.  Although BTS has toured near-incessantly in New York in the past two years (at least 8 shows covered by this site, plus a few that I am sure I am missing), each show offers new surprises and treats.   Tonight, a cover of Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” was a particular highlight, along with an encore that included “Twin Falls” segueing directly into an extended version of “Some” from their classic album The Normal Years.  The sprawling “Randy Described Eternity,” from Perfect From Now, was another classic that I had not seen recently.  There are not many bands that can keep us coming back for this many shows in such a relatively short span of time, but Doug Martsch’s dynamic guitar work and continued rhythmic exploration still gets us every time.

I recorded this set from the center of the floor with a combination of Schoeps hypercardiod microphones and DPA cardiods mounted one above the other.  The four-mic mix perfectly captures the quality house mix from the Highline staff.  Enjoy!

Dead Confederate: September 28, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

October 9, 2010

[iPhone photo by acidjack]

One of the gratifying aspects of the taping hobby is discovering new music from like-minded tapers.  Of course, that isn’t always easy for me, given that most of the bands that are regulars on the “taper circuit” don’t have much in common with what I am into musically.  That is why I always pay extra attention to Southern Shelter, a taper blog run by a fan in Athens, GA with fairly similar taste in music and very similar taste in high-end recording gear.  His excellent recordings of Dead Confederate led me to check the band out at Music Hall of Williamsburg last month (I had not realized that we covered their show at Piano’s back in 2008!), and the show they put on, despite the room not being completely packed, was a standout for them.  Reams of special guests joined the band onstage, including DJ Logic, the band Alberta Cross, and Kevin Kinney.  Don’t let the Southern-sounding name of this Athens band fool you – there are no country stylings to be found here.  Confederate’s heavy sound unabashedly references 90s acts like Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr., with frontman Hardy Morris carving out his own territory on vocals that have more of a straight-ahead rock flavor.  The set closed out with an extended cover of “Rockin In the Free World” that jammed into “This Land Is Your Land” and back, with Kevin Kinney taking over the bulk of vocal duties.

As I was running late, I recorded this set from the optimum position in the venue with my small mobile rig.  While it is still better quality than 95% of the live recordings to be found on the Internet, this recording is not quite up to my usual standards.  In addition, there is noticeable hiss on “Rockin in the Free World’s” intro and during the “This Land Is Your Land” portion due to the volume control of the recorder slipping down and the resulting signal having to be boosted much more than usual in post-production.  Nonethess, this will be a nice document of a unique show, and I hope the sample shows I am being too hard on the sound quality.  Enjoy!

Pavement: September 24, 2010 Central Park Summerstage – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

September 27, 2010
By

[iPhone photo by acidjack]

Oh, Pavement, how we will miss you.  This final show of the band’s five-night NYC (four nights in Central Park) run had a very different vibe than the previous shows, with the band giving off a bit more of a subdued vibe.  The setlist emphasized the more melodic, slower songs from the catalog, and Malkmus in particular seemed intent on jamming and reinterpreting songs (leading to a hilarious “Pavement and the Jicks!!” comment by Bob).  At times the more laid back approach worked – such as on the epic “And Then (The Hexx)” and the extended “Heaven Is A Truck” that was a last minute substitution for “Fight This Generation” in the setlist.  At others, it seemed the band was a tad off their game, with a few false starts here and there.  The set closed out with “Range Life” featuring the recording engineer Bryce Goggin, who mixed both Wowee Zowee and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and played keyboards in the recorded version of “Range Life,” performing live with the band – undoubtedly a dream come true for anyone who spends most of their time behind the console!

Where do we go from here?  Fans can hope that the band decides to make new music or at least tour together again, but that seems less than likely at this point.  What we will have left will be our memories of these beautiful nights – which Bob himself acknowledged the band would never forget – and the music itself.  Having Pavement back was also a reminder of how dearly they were missed.  To quote the simple “Summer Babe” refrain, made all the more poignant now: “Don’t go.”

I recorded this set with the same mobile rig as the Williamsburg Waterfront show and Wednesday’s show.  There was almost no wind, and the crowd around me was enthusiastic but respectful.  As a result, the recording is excellent.   As someone who never got to see their favorite band perform (due in part to an untimely death in the band), I greatly appreciate Pavement giving fans who had not seen them before a second chance.  One of the main reasons that I record concerts is because I know how much I treasure the old recordings that people made of my favorite band, since they are the closest thing I have to the real live experience.  I hope that some people will feel the same way about these recordings.  Enjoy!

Pavement: September 22, 2010 Central Park Summerstage – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

Night three of Pavement’s New York run was a wet one.  After the clear skies and perfect temperatures of Sunday’s Williamsburg Waterfront show, and the previous night at Central Park Summerstage, Wednesday night was a hot, wet mess.  Shortly into the show, the skies opened up and we all got soaked, but even with a delay for lightning, Pavement managed to play their entire planned set, and a killer one at that, closing out the proceedings with a thunderous “Conduit for Sale!” in which Bob Nastanovich pulled out absolutely all the stops on the vocals.  Drenched but happy, the still-strong crowd returned the favor, singing along to the chorus and giving Pavement another triumphant notch in their belt.

This show was tough to record, given that it was pouring rain, but despite the shirt on my head covering my mobile rig, the recording came out quite nicely.  Enjoy!
