Animal Collective – September 30, 2007 Webster Hall – Lossless Download

October 1, 2007
By

The Animal Collective tour in support of their new release Strawberry Jam came to New York tonight for the first of two shows at Webster Hall. This was an off night. The band seemed somewhat out of sync, and the show came to a screeching halt when Avey Tare stopped “Fireworks” in the middle because it was “too bass-y”. Three truncated songs later, no encore, and the show was over in a little over 70 minutes. We hope tomorrow will be better.

The recording offered for download below has superior sound quality. Avey was right about the bass, and as a result I equalized the low-end in post-production. I had an excellent place for recording, and used DPA microphones that can handle the booming bass of this concert without distortion or saturation.

This recording is now available as a direct download in FLAC or MP3 [HERE].

Bjorkestra – September 22, 2007 Blender Theatre – Lossless Download

Bjorkestra at Bowery Ballroom
January 20, 2006

Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra headlined the Blender Theatre last Saturday with a ninety minute set of jazz excellence. In anticipation of the release of their first CD (to be entitled Enjoy and due for release in January), Bjorkestra went on a brief tour in the Northeast. The Blender show featured the addition of a track from Bjork’s Volta album in the setlist.

The sound quality in the venue was outstanding, and my equipment and positioning were ideal. This recording accurately reflects the excellent venue sound, but perhaps the horn section was mixed too low. Thanks again to Travis for permission to record.

This is the third time I have recorded Bjorkestra. Excellent recordings of the February (here) and the June (here) performances are still available for download in the archives of nyctaper.

Bjork – September 24, 2007 Madison Square Garden – Lossless Download

September 25, 2007
By

If Bjork’s May performances in New York–her initial return to touring after nearly four years off–were perhaps somewhat timid and apprehensive, tonight’s Madison Square Garden performance was powerful, aggressive, and vocally outstanding. Bjork has regained all of her vocal chops after four months on the road and she seems to be relaxed, in charge, and having fun. Additionally, the band was tight and fluid, and the setlist has added a several new numbers.

My recording was made from the 5th row of the seating section, directly in line with the right PA stacks. As a result, the recording is clear, and rich in bass presence. I utilized the DPA uni-directional microphones so that much of the chatter behind and to my left is hardly noticeable. This is the same recording rig and similar position to the White Stripes MSG recording from July.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey – September 22, 2007 Blender Theatre – Lossless Download

September 23, 2007
By

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a prog-fusion jazz trio consisting of Brian Haas (keyboards), Reed Mathis (bass), and newly-added (2007) drummer Joshua Raymer. Their most obvious influence is Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis, and their most obvious comparison is Medeski Martin and Wood. Mathis has built a solid reputation, as he’s played recently in different bands with Steve Kimock, Bobby Previte, and Mark Benevento.

Their opening set last night at the Blender was nearly 90 minutes of profoundly excellent jazz improv. Haas provided the backbone as he performed primarily on a series electric keyboards and effects, and Raymer kept up with his new bandmates providing a solid rhythm. The lead bass and various effects utilized by Mathis were quite impressive during his several solos.

JFJO permit live recording, and as a result I was able to use my best equipment from a center spot directly above the soundboard in the first row of seats. After the show I chatted briefly with Brian Haas who was not only modest about the outstanding set that the trio had just performed, but also thanked me for recording the set.

Enjoy this outstanding recording of new jazz improvisation at its finest.

The Bjorkestra set was also recorded and will be posted in the next couple of days.

Old 97’s September 17, 2007 World Trade Center – Lossless Download

September 20, 2007

Old 97’s were the second act in Monday’s opening night of Music Downtown. Old 97’s have always been pretty loose live, and Monday was no exception–the band is more about fun and entertainment than simply mimicking the albums. The setlist contains a nice retrospective of their material, including four songs from the brilliant 1999 release Fight Songs

This recording was made from the same location with the same equipment as the Hold Steady recording posted below. The wind was stronger during this set, so that there are moments when wind noise is audible, but it does not retract from listening enjoyment.

The Hold Steady September 17, 2007 World Trade Center – Lossless Download

September 18, 2007

The Downtown Music Series debuted to a packed plaza at the base of the brand new 7 World Trade Center last night. With the state of the art 7 WTC behind them, and the 6-year-old Pit on their right, The Hold Steady performed a tight one-hour set primarily consisting of material from Boys and Girls in America.

As a result of the courtesy of Music Downtown and permission to record, I was able to position my best equipment in front of the soundboard. Although this was an outdoor plaza susceptible to all matters of extraneous noise, the sound quality was quite excellent, and the recording is nearly flawless–there are some instances of minor wind noise.

The Old 97’s set was also recorded and will be posted later this week.

Sonic Youth Revisted – nyctaper’s mea culpa

September 12, 2007
By

When I was denied entry with taping equipment (ticket in hand) into Sonic Youth’s July 28 concert at the McCarren Pool in Brooklyn, I left the venue with the belief that the band had reneged on an email that permitted access to record. I arrived back in Manhattan tired, sweating, and pissed, and wrote an ill-advised rant blaming the band, and in particular Lee Ranaldo, for what transpired.

That rant was unfortunately reposted in several places on the web, and as a result, nyctaper has had many email, forum, and in person discussions with people about the situation. Several of those people spoke directly with Lee Ranaldo about what happened, and to his eternal credit Lee has expressed regret about what happened to me at the gate, has expressed no anger towards my rant, and has quite clearly stated that no security person spoke to him about my situation.

At this point, it has become obvious to me that I was jerked around by the security personnel at McCarren Pool, and that Sonic Youth and Lee Ranaldo were the unwitting victims of my misdirected anger.

And for that, I offer my sincere apologies to Sonic Youth, their soundman Aaron Mullan, and in particular to Lee Ranaldo.

I have learned a few lessons as a result of this fiasco–namely, don’t trust venue security above the musicians, don’t publish to your blog something written in the heat of anger, and that quite clearly, Sonic Youth are extremely cool people. Support them. Please.

Additionally, Thurston Moore is playing two local NYC gigs in the next couple of weeks (click dates to buy tickets):
September 24, at Maxwells in Hoboken
September 26, at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn

Kria Brekkan September 9, 2007 St. Mark’s Church – Lossless Download

September 10, 2007
By

Kria Brekkan is the current stage name for Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, former and founding member of the Icelandic avante-ambient band mum. She is also the wife of Avey Tare from Animal Collective, and they collaborated on the 2007 release Pullhair Rubeye.

Her intimate show at St. Mark’s tonight was certainly in a similar vein to her career output thus far. Yet as the focus was on Kria throughout, it was more personal and intense. She is a classically trained musician who is a superbly gifted piano player, with a unique sense of melody and time structure, and a boundless performance energy. Kria performed her set straight through without a break, and at the end of the set she looked up from the piano and seemed to be surprised that she was in a room full of people.

The recording is captured with all the inherent flaws of this performance room–namely surrounding noise and the limits of a small sound system. However, even with all the obstacles, this recording still provides an enjoyable listen of this unique artist.

Concert Preview: The Hold Steady / Old 97’s / Illinois at 7 World Trade Center

September 7, 2007
By

In the most recent Upcoming nyctaper Events, I added the Hold Steady concert scheduled for September 17. The very act of typing “World Trade Center” evoked an odd set of emotions. Even six years hence, the very idea that 7 WTC will host a concert series is both empowering and bittersweet. As have many New Yorkers, I directly witnessed, and was personally, physically and financially effected by 9/11.

Music Downtown is the brainchild of Wall Street Rising and Knitting Factory founder Michael Dorf. In a well-guided effort to help revitalize the WTC downtown area, Music Downtown is producing three free concerts in the week after the 9/11 anniversary. The site is straightforward in its mission: “not only will Music Downtown increase critically needed foot traffic to the area, but it will also help to plant new seeds for Lower Manhattan’s economic and cultural growth”. This is a mission which directly touches nyctaper, as my office is one block from 7 World Trade.

All three of these concerts feature outstanding artists of varied genres. nyctaper has received permission to record the first night, September 17, which features The Hold Steady, Old 97’s, and Illinois. Artists featured on the 18th and 19th include Victoria Williams, Nick Lowe and Ollabelle.

Brooklyn-based The Hold Steady produced one of the best albums of 2006, Boys and Girls in America, and were indeed Blender Magazine’s 2006 Band of the Year.

Originally from Texas, Old 97’s are veterans of alt-country’s pop wing. They have produced 8 major releases, and are a rollicking live band.
