Its not news to our readers that Kid Millions is one of this site’s favorite musicians, both as a member of site-regulars Oneida and as a solo artist under the moniker of Man Forever. We’ve chronicled Man Forever from their days as a team of drummers, through the addition of accompanying musicians, to its present incarnation. For the latest album, Kid compiled a roster of prime musicians and created a work of great imagination and invention that truly transports Man Forever to it ultimate fruition. Play What They Want (Thrill Jockey) is more than just a collection of Kid’s friends — Laurie Anderson, Yo La Tengo, and Mary Lattimore included — its a realization of a career of the scene’s ultimate percussionist as composer. The album is a musician at the peak of his compositional talents.

For the album’s release show at the most-appropriate setting of the Brooklyn Music School, Kid Millions brought together many of the album’s players (but none of the celebrities) as a profoundly talented orchestra. Among the many players too numerous to list in its entirety, there was the percussion group TIGUE, the harp of Brandee Younger, the vocals of Nina Dante and Nick Hallett, and the lively lead bass of Brandon Lopez. Kid introduces everyone on the recording and rest assured that this compilation of talent is truly remarkable. The band worked through three of the tracks from Play What They Want and one older piece in a well-paced set of material that touched on elements of jazz, prog and drone and highlighted the natural rhythmic talents of its protagonist.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a superb soundboard feed provided by the talents of house FOH Ben Manley. The result is an outstanding capture with depth and clarity. Enjoy!

After some mild subway misdirection, an uber dropped me off at Brooklyn Steel exactly at 7:00. I was surprised to find a long line well around the corner. In Charleston, music fans show up an hour late for everything. This was my first indication that this Brooklyn Ween crowd was hungry and eagerly anticipating this two-night run following the band’s reuniting just last year. Conversation around me in line was entirely Ween focused: a spirited Brooklyn Bowl-Las Vegas February run discussion, Sunday’s Baltimore setlist review and expectations for the evening. Clearly, this crowd was excited and ready for a rock show.

The line moved quickly and in about 10 minutes I was getting patted down at the entrance. My recording gear seemed to be understood; however the microphone stand was a source of confusion. Luckily, the NYCTaper crew had rolled out the red carpet and I knew exactly who to ask for. Another taper and I waited patiently until Anthony, the venue manager came over. Anthony had seen the likes of us before; and quickly instructed us on how Brooklyn Steel wants it done. No worries, Anthony was very accommodating and friendly, and instantly we were inside hoisting mics and pressing buttons.

Wow. This crowd was ravenous. Fans started screaming around 8:00 and didn’t stop. The place erupted when Ween took the stage around 8:30. Meandering slowly into “The Stallion”, then launching into “You Fucked Up”; this crowd knew the gloves were off and we were all in for a serious “all ages” Ween show! The set was richly scattered with Ween favorites (or classics if you can say that about the Ween catalog): “Transdermal”, “Push the Daisies”, “Roses are Free”, things were moving on and the Ween crowd was fully engaged. I heard very little crowd chatter and the recording reflects it. The band continued on through a twisty “HIV Song” and a rocking “Spinal Meningitis”. About halfway through the set, Gene pulled out the acoustic and announced “this is the first time we’ve ever played this”, and tuned into the opening chords of “Among His Tribe” off the 2003 Quebec album. What a surprise! As if not to take themselves or the moment too seriously, Ween followed quickly with “Piss Up a Rope”. The room would erupt again when the band announced a “nice party jam” and led us through David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”; a cover recently performed in Baltimore after a 6 year absence since New Years 2011. Immediately following, we were treated to the first live version of “Seconds” since summer 2002. The band lit the room up again with a super-funky “Going Gets Tough”, then winded things down with “Someday”. After a nearly 5-minute encore break; Ween gave us a Gene-less “Fiesta”, with Gene returning to the stage to shut things down with “The Mollusk”. The band left the stage at 10:42, following a few mentions of “tomorrow night”. Ween certainly left this crowd engaged and primed for another show!

I was a quick Uber back to Manhattan by 11:15, with a Shake Shack burger and a bottle of cabernet delivered to my hotel room, only in NYC for this Team Dirty South taper!

Horse Lords: June 4, 2017 Sunnyvale

Last Summer during a heat wave we hosted a show headlined by Horse Lords at Trans-Pecos and it was a glorious night of cool air and even cooler music. EricPH “found” this band for the site in 2015, but by 2016 their Northern Spy album Interventions put them on the map for all of us. Horse Lords is comprised of four superb musicians with not only music-school skills but the touch and timing to play incredibly intricate music in complete sync with each other. They combine the best parts of prog, jazz and math rock into extended suites in the live setting that inspires repeated listens.

On Sunday night at Sunnyvale, Horse Lords brought out the diehards and there are now quite a few of these enlightened folks. The crowd wasn’t overwhelming, but those who were there were all-in — the band’s peaks and valley and twists and turns had the entire crowd hanging on for dear life. The set was culled primarily from Interventions but also included one extended older cut to finish the set. From my vantage point at the front of the stage, it was a quite an impressive image of four musicians instinctively in tune with each other. Horse Lords are a band not to be missed, and we will continue to follow this outstanding group.

Horse Lords are currently on a short midwest tour which visits Toronto, Cleveland and Chicago beginning tonight through Friday. All dates and venues here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at the front of the stage and mixed with an excellent board feed. The mix of the two sources compliments perfectly and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: May 23, 2017 Brooklyn Steel

Last year, I wrote about this site’s history with Animal Collective and celebrated the serious rejuvenation of the band’s fortunes. That show at Irving Plaza was our first introduction to the live performances of the Painting With material. We also caught the show later in the year at Terminal 5. In the ensuing months, Animal Collective released two EPs with material related to the album and continued to tour. This Spring saw their return to NYC for a show at the new Bowery Presents venue Brooklyn Steel and last Tuesday’s show was perhaps the most powerful Animal Collective performance we’ve experienced in more than a decade of seeing the band.

This was our first experience at Brooklyn Steel and I was impressed. There’s definitely a nice vibe to the venue, and the sound quality from our vantage point was on point — full spectrum rich sound with no boominess at all. The intensity of the acoustics in the venue served the band well, as Animal Collective provided thundering bass beats to accompany the multi-layered three-pronged sound delivery system. This tour’s version of the band features Panda, Geologist and Avey across the front accompanied by drummer Jeremy Hyman at center rear of the stage. The set featured much of the recent material but also satisfied long-time fans with older tracks democratically selected from their many releases and some deep cuts not heard in years. The sold-out crowd called the band back after a healthy 75 minute main set and we were treated to an extended encore set that closed the night with a lengthy and rousing version of “Summertime Clothes”.

Animal Collective’s tour continues with some June and July shows, all dates [here].

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypercards mounted at the elevated area inside of the soundboard area and with the mics raised high. The amazing sound in the venue and the choice of microphones worked perfectly as this recording is really quite superb. Enjoy!

NYCTaper is 10 Years Old Today

Yes, it was ten years ago today that NYCTaper made its first post and began as a live music blog or taper blog or whatever we’ve ultimately become. Its been a tremendous decade for us here and as I literally just paid our server host for another two year registration, we will continue on.

There are of course hundreds of folks who have helped make this experience possible. Thanks as always to our faithful readers, the amazing photographers who permit us to post their work, the venues and FOH engineers that let us record inside their events, and of course the many artists who have graciously permitted us to record their shows.

There is no show to celebrate this anniversary unfortunately, but maybe we’ll even something more important to celebrate soon.

In the half-dozen times I’ve seen Sebadoh live, I had never experienced a performance as good as their set at the Bell House last week. The band seemed relaxed and focused and worked through an hour-long set of inspired music. Perhaps buoyed by the fact that in this “co-headline” show they were tasked with playing second of three bands, Sebadoh had a few moments of playful banter, but for the most part were all business.

The set was structured to allow each song protagonist to play a mini-set of their material before a changeover. The show began with five Lou Barlow songs before Jason Loewenstein took over on the guitar at centerstage and played six of his songs, before Lou finished the set with four songs. The band released an album (Defend Yourself) and an EP early this decade after an extended hiatus, but this show was a fair representation of all of their material, newer and classic. This show was the last night of a brief five-city tour after the band played just three dates in 2016. If the Bell House set indicates the high quality of the band’s current performances, we hope that 2017 sees more dates for Sebadoh, particularly locally.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers mounted at the soundboard rail and mixed with an excellent feed by veteran house FOH Dave. There is one moment of feedback in the first minute, but overall the sound quality of this recording is superb — possibly the best recording we’ve ever made in this venue. Enjoy!

Xenia Rubinos: April 13, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

There’s no earthly reason why Xenia Rubinos should not be a household name in the very near future. She is an artist of immense talents as a writer, composer and performer and her art is true. The musical genres that are home to Xenia Rubinos’ exemplary music have been previously culturally appropriated by the likes of well-to-do Ivy League grads, a Smith grad from Connecticut, and a guy from Forest Hills. But as a person of color who has lived the bitter mistreatment of her protagonists, Xenia is in a position to present a necessary point of view at a troubling historical time when authenticity is crucial. The world needs more voices like Xenia Rubinos and her time is now.

In July Xenia Rubinos released Black Terry Cat, her first album for the Anti- label and second overall. The album received an 8.0 from Laura Snapes over at Pitchfork and pretty much universally positive reviews worldwide. In support, she’s toured tirelessly throughout the US and this month saw her triumphant return to NYC.

The Bowery Ballroom show was a special night for Xenia. Not only was it her largest show to date, but it was also her mother’s birthday. Given that her first album was in part a tribute to her recently passed father, it was particularly moving that this performer had a close family connection on such an important career night. The other important participants at Bowery were the crowd, who were both voluminous and dancing throughout, and her two accompanying musicians — longtime collaborator and producer Marco Buccelli who played a variety of drums, keys and effects, and for this tour Jack Hill on bass, moog and guitar. The set began with the opening track from Cat before the trio blasted through a fifteen-song set that fully represented Xenia’s catalog thus far. There were multiple pockets of fans who literally did not stop dancing throughout the entire set and were engaged with the performer throughout. But it was Xenia who was the well-deserved center of attention as she pivoted from keys to bass to solo vocals as an unstoppable kinetic ball of energy. At the end of the hour-long set she was called back for multiple encores — a true affirmation that an artist with integrity and abundant talent will ultimately succeed.

Xenia Rubinos just began an extensive eleven-date tour of Europe in April and May before she returns to the US for a variety of Summer shows, dates [HERE].

Chuck Prophet: March 29, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

Chuck Prophet is one of those musicians who went from barely-known to me to a perennial favorite in the course of a single song — or really a single riff, as all it took was hearing the opening guitar line from “Sonny Liston’s Blues,” off his terrific 2009 album Let Freedom Ring. Prophet gets described frequently as the “indie rock Tom Petty,” and it certainly fits his vocal style and commitment to old-school rock ’n’ roll, but if anything it sells him short: He combines a heart worn boldly on his sleeve with character observations that are by turns astute and hilarious, sometimes in the course of the same phrase.

This show at the Bowery Ballroom came toward the end of the tour for Prophet’s excellent new album Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins. Live, not only is Prophet’s dry wit given free rein, but the Mission Express, consisting of guitar wizard James DePrato (here playing even more slide than usual), the superb rhythm section of bassist Kevin White and drummer Vicente Rodriguez, and the unbeatable keyboardist/vocalist (and Prophet’s wife) Stephanie Finch, can spread out songs like “Summertime Thing” and “You Did (Bomp Shooby Dooby Bomp)” into loping jams that would be rock radio staples in an alternate universe. I’ve never seen a bad Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express show, and this was among their best, charging along without letup for nearly two hours.

This recording was made with Church Audio CA-14 cardioid mics from lip of the Bowery Ballroom balcony, mixed with a soundboard feed provided by the Bowery’s supremely talented and helpful new soundperson Danielle.

Son Volt is currently on tour in support of their new album Notes of Blue, the band’s ninth record in more than twenty years of work. Despite the early years as torch-carriers for the alt-country/No Depression movement, Son Volt has built a career on solid roots/Americana rock. Like band leader Jay Farrar, there’s nothing particularly flashy about the group, they’re just built on a consistent foundation of high quality music. The new album continues in that vein, if not a tad bit more focused on the “roots” sound more representative of the Son Volt’s recent output.

The Son Volt tour came through NYC last week for a few local dates, and we were fortunate to attend the Bowery Ballroom show which sold out months ago. Like the band, the fans of this band are consistent and faithful — members of our group for the Bowery night came from Ireland, Boston and Missouri to see this show. And the band did not disappoint. After the early set concentrated heavily on Blue material, Son Volt delivered a twenty-six song show with a setlist pulled democratically from all eras of the band. Indeed there were three Uncle Tupelo songs in the encore set, and the night ended with Keith Richards penned Stones cover. Son Volt will be on tour throughout the next two months mostly in the West and Midwest, dates here.

I recorded this set with room mics only, running the Schoeps from our traditional spot in the front center of the balcony. The sound quality reflects the show experience — excellent quality sound supplemented by some feisty fans. Enjoy!
