Wilco: June 29, 2019 Solid Sound Festival

Pete reports:

“Saturday night’s show kicked off with “Hell is Chrome”. For me, Jeff could have said “Thanks and good night” and walked off stage after that, and I would have been satisfied. But the festivities continued with another AGIB entry (Muzzle of Bees) followed by a couple from YHF (IATTBYH and War on War), and back to AGIB’s “Company in My Back”. A few songs later, they debuted two brand new songs, “Empty Corner” (which had been featured earlier in the day in a surround sound installation at the museum) and “White Wooden Cross.” Overall, the Saturday night installment was classic, good-as-it-gets, Wilco fare. 24 songs, solid entries from the entire body of work, and a nice two-song encore to cap off the night. Absolutely electrifying, and exactly what one would expect from this band at their own festival in the Saturday night, beachfront real estate portion of the weekend.”

Pete recorded this show with the trusty Neumann cards from a very advantageous position at the Soundboard cage. The sound is superb, enjoy!

Russo Harrington Bogie Zahn Goldberger: June 29, 2019 Nublu NYC

These are the types of nights that NYC music aficionados live for. A one-time-only live improvisation session by a group of five local stellar musicians in an intimate setting, who could really ask for more. Local guitar wizard Dave Harrington has made a nice career playing with a variety of musicians, and indeed bassist Spencer Zahn, horn player Stuart Bogie, and percussionist Joe Russo all performed at the release shows in February for Dave’s 2019 release Pure Imagination, No Country.

This night at Nublu though was a truly collaborative effort by the quintet (also including guitarist Jonathan Goldberger) as each segment of the set was improvised. Harrington revealed to me in between sets that there was one point where he and Zahn began to riff on a piece they had rehearsed earlier that week, but for the most part these tracks are all the work of expert musicians using their interpretive skills in real time. The result is two hours of breathtaking wholly unique music that was both a joy to hear live and will forever be a thoroughly engaging listen.

Dave Harrington returns to Nublu on July 19 for another night of magic with his Merry Pranksters (members this time are secret!), and attendance is highly recommended.

I recorded this set from a spot about 15 feet from the stage with the Schoeps cards and the sound (other than a little chatter) is superb. Enjoy!

Monks Of Doom: May 23, 2018 Berlin NYC

It had been ten years since we last encountered Monks Of Doom when this fortuitous event occurred. Those two shows in early 2009 at the now defunct Brooklyn venue Club Europa were the last time Monks appeared in the New York area. The Bay Area supergroup, containing mostly members of Camper Van Beethoven along with sometime CVB member and longtime guitarist for Counting Crows David Immerglück, tends to play intermittent west coast dates when the members’ other projects are not active.  In 2018, the quartet finished an album that has been in the works for that last decade and went on tour for the first time in who knows how long.  The Brönte Pin is the band’s first new material in twenty-five years, but sounds just as tight and focused as their best work. Immy shares lead vocal work with bassist Victor Krummenacher, with guitar wizard Greg Lisher and percussionist Chris Pedersen providing the backbone.  This set opening for the special Escovedo/Barone show (here) was a treat that we literally had no idea was going to occur, and we hope it isn’t another ten years before the band comes back to NYC.  In the spirit of long delays, I inadvertently sat on this recording for over a year, but I guess its better late than never.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Escovedo recording and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!

Dream Syndicate: May 17, 2019 Mercury Lounge

The second night of Dream Syndicate‘s two sold-out shows at Mercury Lounge continued in the same vein as the first night — a ton of energy propelling forward a set of tunes from new album that ultimately led to a collection of classics. On this night, my personal highlight was the extended take on “Coltrane” that seemed to reach deep down to conjure up the psych-blues that motivated the song’s first performance in the studio. The crowd was again full of old friends, and the band indeed dedicated “Still Here Now” to former tour manager and the music industry hero Nicholas Hill, who has persevered through some medical issues in the last few years. It was this kind of good energy that permeated these two Dream Syndicate shows and we’re so happy we attended both.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the first night, this time mixed expertly by brilliant house FOH Alex, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Steve Wynn is universally acknowledged as one of the true good guys in rock music, so its a very rewarding thing to see him and his legendary band The Dream Syndicate receiving a fresh wave of popularity and support. The two sold-out shows at Mercury Lounge were attended by a who’s-who of local music luminaries there to both pay tribute but also to celebrate the superb new album by the band, These Times. But if the crowd was expecting a nostalgia set, it got a very different experience. The Dream Syndicate came right out of the gate with raging versions of the new album and kept the pace up for the entire set. Wynn is the charismatic leader center-stage, but these late era DS shows have featured the incendiary guitar work of Jason Victor and on night one his genius was on full display. The band saved some of the older material for late in the set by which time the audience had already received its money’s worth.

Dream Syndicate continue this tour with shows in the midwest, including two nights at the Hideout in Chicago on May 31 and June 1, before the band goes to Europe through June, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards set up next to the soundboard cage, and blended with a fine board mixed by the band’s FOH Mark. The sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Mountain Goats: April 30, 2019 Brooklyn Steel

It was about eighteen months ago when the Mountain Goats played an epic show at Brooklyn Steel that we were fortunate to attend and capture. So the band’s return to the venue on the tour to support their excellent new album In League with Dragons, came with some real anticipation. And man, did the band deliver. John Darnielle was particularly loquacious on this evening (check out the number of “banter” tracks), but his comments were all on point. The Mountain Goats have achieved a level of stature that’s been earned in years of tours and albums, and it seems like the band has reached that point where it can enjoy and revel in its well-deserved respect. And while Dragons dominated the setlist early-on, the band did still deliver the types of old rare nuggets that still satisfy the grizzled veterans of tMG shows. Indeed rare songs like “Jaipur” (played less than 10 times in the last 10 years), “Spilling Toward Alpha” (3 times in the last decade) , and “The Coroner’s Gambit” (played two times before 2019) are the types of setlist surprises that make us keep coming year after year. But ultimately this night was about the new album, the strength of which makes us believe that the Mountain Goats will continue to be the gift that keeps giving.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards raised high inside the soundboard booth and mixed with a board feed mixed expertly as always by longtime tMG FOH Brandon. The result is another superb recording of this band from this venue. Enjoy!

Acid Mothers Temple: April 20, 2019 Market Hotel

April 24, 2019

The return of the Acid Mothers Temple stateside has become a yearly tradition and as a result the band has built its reputation in the U.S. as one of the most intense psych rock bands on the planet.  This year the band agreed to play the show on the day that has become a kind of Christmas for heads — “4-20” at Market Hotel.  Whether responding to the unique surroundings or the “holiday” atmosphere, AMT drew their largest crowd of the tour and played their longest set of the year.  This show was 90 minutes of the most intense music we’ve ever seen from this band, which has evolved in personnel in recent years, but remains anchored by the ferocious lead guitar of  Kawabata Makoto.  New-ish guitarist and vocalist Jyonson Tsu was featured in Dark Star Blues and La Novia, and the band is blessed with Tsu’s intense vocals and intuitive interplay with Makoto.  All in all, this was exactly what we’d hoped for from this band on this date, and judging by the diary entry for this date on Kawabata’s blog, the band was pretty stoked about the show too.

I recorded this set by substituting the Neumann hypers into the installed rig in the venue and the change was exactly perfect for this show.  A small percentage of the board feed was used to fortify vocals and kick drum, and overall the sound is superb.  Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: March 29, 2019 Nublu NYC (with Chris Forsyth)

April 1, 2019
By

This Nublu night was ostensibly organized as the release party for Garcia Peoples new album Natural Facts with good friend of the site Ryley Walker as special guest. When Ryley decided to take some time off for personal reasons, the band invited another friend of this site Chris Forsyth, and Chris came north from Philadelphia on very short notice. The result was one of the more memorable shows in recent memory. The first set was a solid run through GP material, but it was the second set where the magic was revealed in an incredible hour-long jam sequence that approached legendary status. With Forsyth surrounded by the GP guitar section, the band added percussionist Ryan Jewell, and the double-drummer attack propelled the action through a 32-minute jam on a new Forsyth composition “Techno Top”. What followed were two covers that took the jam-packed crowd into another stratosphere. Of particular note is the tasty 1968-style high-energy “The Other One” which started on a buzz that never wavered through 19 minutes of pure bliss.

If you live in the Philadelphia area, Garcia Peoples is returning the release show favor to Chris Forsyth, as the two will perform together at Jerry’s On Front on April 27 when Forsyth releases his new record All Time Present. Our sincere recommendation is that anyone within any reasonable distance of that show on that night should not miss another magic night.

Eric and I recorded this set from an upfront location in the venue directly behind the DJ booth. The positioning did not permit a board feed, but the fortuitously placed high-end mics have yielded recordings of superb quality. We offer both for your enjoyment!

Guerilla Toss: October 31, 2018 Market Hotel

December 19, 2018
By

The genre-bending shamanistic space-rock collective Guerilla Toss have been a must-see live act for several years now. We caught them in a daytime slot in the Out In the Streets Festival in 2016 and then later in a support slot at Secret Project Robot when the band played literally among the crowd (and our mics) on the floor of the venue.

For this majestic set on Halloween at Market Hotel, Guerilla Toss sold out the venue that fit their aesthetic to a tee. This show definitely had an event feel throughout the night and the band certainly lived up to the atmosphere. Performing in front of an imported, elaborate, but appropriately spacey lighting rig, Guerilla Toss delivered a meaty ninety-minute set to their vocally devoted followers. Personally, the highlight of the set was the seamless segue into a haunting version of Nico’s “All Tomorrow’s Parties” which seemed an appropriate cover for GT and fit right into their oeuvre. But ultimately this show was more about the ability of this band to perfectly sync all of their classically trained abilities into a unique and compelling amalgam of modern music. Guerilla Toss remains a must see band and this show, their biggest in the NYC market thus far, is proof that they will continue to grow their reach.

I recorded this set with the installed AT mics and a fine soundboard feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!
