“Like an old testament prophet, or a Morman elder, or (all right, what do I know about it?) like that guy on Big Love, our favorite openly practicing musical polygamist David Lowery brought both of his bands to NYC for back to back performances at the Highline Ballroom on January 14. I’ve been reading the Keith Richards book, which has me all in a lather for rock and roll tell-all, so I couldn’t help but wonder what the dynamic on the bus is. One big happy family? Hmm. Maybe, but the mind is inevitably drawn to the sordid. Is it Cracker in the front, wearing their greater commercial success like a warm parka, loud and cheerful game of 20 questions, Camper Van Beethoven in the back, sullen and pissy, answering in monosyllables? Or is it CVB the first and truest love, despite Cracker’s headline position on the bill, serenely confident of favor, irritatingly aloof in the face of drunken, bitter Cracker histrionics? I guess we’ll have to wait for the Immergluck book to find out. In the meantime, I marvel at what an absolute delight this pair of shows proved to be. I liked so many things about them I hardly know where to begin. I should say that I was a fan back in the nineties but I’d completely lost touch with this music: all I knew is that I used to like it. As often as not, things you used to love come back to embarrass you (just give me a second to queue up this episode of Lost in Space on Hulu . . . OK, I’m back now), and so I was gratified and relieved to find that in this case my taste was vindicated by strong performances of a jaw droppingly rich musical smorgasbord. It’s a brilliant format, playing consecutively as CVB and Cracker, and it gives the concert goer some real insights into the different approaches taken by these two successful projects. I found myself about to use the word “evolution” back there, but that isn’t it: CVB didn’t evolve into Cracker anymore than the Beatles evolved into Wings. Two bands. Some similarities. Some differences. Both draw on a rich California compost heap of musical influences (the Dead, Bakersfield, Cali ska) and have a sound founded on solid musicianship and terrific guitar work. I was struck by how really well both Greg Lisher and Johnny Hickman played. CVB is fermented longer and a little bit tangier and is in some ways more interesting musically, where Cracker is more buffed up alpha pop, steroids sure, but hits the home runs fair enough. Both bands sounded absolutely fresh: no taint of the nostalgia act here despite playing sets consisting almost wholly of albums recorded 20 years ago.

So, yeah, this show was constructed around the “play the whole album” gimmick, which is becoming increasingly common, and about which I have a certain shallow ambivalence. Upside, you know you’ll hear songs you like. Downside, it panders to a lack of faith in the fanbase. It’s the same impulse that’s turning Broadway into a recycling center for popular middlebrow movies. It seeks to assure the public that even if they are disappointed, at least they won’t be surprised. A concert can be a revelation. A live show allows a band to play their songs reworked in interesting ways, to add intros and codas and fool with the mix of instruments and the tempo, to play covers and obscure tracks. They can petulantly refuse to play their big hit, or play it so flaccidly it’s like a big contemptuous finger to the audience (this I don’t like), or going the other way they can play their big hit twice: once early and once again at the end. I’ve seen all that and every time it makes me glad I didn’t just stay home and listen to the album. Or they can just play the album, which in general teaches me less. Gosh, I’m whining and I don’t like it, and it strikes me that in this case at least, I’m being a bit of a bad sport. Having to listen to Key Lime Pie and Kerosene Hat, both in my top ten list of all time favorites, is really nothing to complain about.

Final interesting tidbit. All the CVB musicians come back onstage to stage to join Cracker for an incendiary, orgasmic “Interstellar Overdrive”, except that Cracker bass player heads backstage. Then it hit me: I’ve never seen a band with two bass players. I actually had never thought about it before, but there it is. Every single other instrument is often doubled or tripled. CVB used four guitars on some songs and southern rock bands have two or three of everything except . . . bass guitar. So it’s my assumption that there must be a reason that two bass guitars simply undoes a rhythm section. There would be no reason in the world not to have everybody in the (OK, the evidence points to it) big happy CVB/Cracker family onstage at the end, no reason to send poor Sal off to a lonely backstage exile with nothing but scads of coked up matchstick model groupies to keep him company (whoa, I think that’s the Keef book talking), except that having two bass players is musical suicide. I’d like to hear peoples thoughts about this.”

Tonight the Moondoggies/Quiet Life tour comes to a close with a show in Portland, the home base of Quiet Life. The two bands crossed the nation in unison, both as friends and as bands with musically similar identities. Two weeks ago, we caught the tour at Rock Shop and posted the Moondoggies recording last week. The opening set that night at Rock Shop was a revelation. Quiet Life write compelling songs with a strong dose of Americana. The vocalist Sean Spellman has a natural stage presence and the band’s excellent musicianship also shines live. The band released their new album Big Green the same week as this show, and the new songs were prominently featured in the setlist, including the extended jam of the set closing “Nighttime” (streaming below).

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Moondoggies set from the same night and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Nicole Atkins: February 9, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Redemption is sweet, especially when it follows several years of intense struggle. On Tuesday, the New York Times published an article and interview with Nicole Atkins called “Musical Survivor Hustles for a Second Chance“, which describes her travails since she separated from Columbia Records. But the title is misleading. Nicole is not seeking a “second chance”, but rather with the release of Mondo Amore (Razor & Tie) this week, the ability to make the albums she envisions and to control her own fate. At the sold-out and breakout Bowery Ballroom show last night, Nicole Atkins proved that she is indeed up to the task and very much in control. As the nine-piece band bounded on stage, Nicole’s delayed entrance wasn’t so much for dramatic effect as to indicate who was in charge. As she led the band through a set that consisted of every track on the new album, a few songs from her first album, and some eclectic covers, Nicole proved that ultimately it all boils down to that voice — a magical instrument that bursts forth in every song with abundant character and melody. The highlights of the set included the set-closing thoroughly powerful “The Tower” in which her voice soared, and which is an early contender for performance of the year. The show concluded with a quiet and soulful performance of 2007’s “Neptune City”, a song which likely feels as if it was recorded in a different lifetime for Nicole, but which carries so much more redemptive meaning now.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the balcony rail and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Woods: February 4, 2011 Monster Island Basement – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Friday night’s Woods show at Monster Island was billed as an acoustic duo, but soon evolved into a near full band Woods show. Jeremy and Jarvis were originally scheduled to perform the entire set together, but were ultimately joined by Lucas, and Matt and Alex from Real Estate/Ducktails. The set’s unique nature was further enhanced by the fact that the band performed seven new songs among a 13-song show. Opening with two pieces of new material presented a challenge for the young-ish and packed-in crowd, but after the band began to play in earnest, they received full attention. The crowd was rewarded with a stunning ten-minute “Bend Beyond” (streaming below), which has taken on the role of Woods jam piece during recent sets. The four new songs performed in the middle of the set were quiet minor-chord folk numbers, but thereafter “Born to Lose” (also streaming below), began quietly and developed into a seven minute full band psychedelic jam. The set closed with two familiar numbers, and despite calls for an encore the lateness of the hour required that the band call it a night. Woods will continue with two final shows in their tour with Ducktails, tonight in Philadelphia and Tuesday in Baltimore, before heading to Europe for much of March.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphone mounted on a pole fifteen feet from the stage, and mixed with a feed from the board. There was some minor hiss in the system and in the PA that is evident during quieter moments, but its not distracting to this overall excellent recording. Enjoy!

Moondoggies: January 30, 2011 The Rock Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

While the critically easy way to approach The Moondoggies is to describe them as another in the line of Northwest “beardo” bands (i.e. Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses), their high-energy show at The Rock Shop on Sunday demonstrated their versatility and unwillingness to be pigeonholed. As the band opened with one of their oldest songs “Keep Her On The Line”, the folk rock strumming was forefront, but as the set progressed, the variety of styles and influences were diverse. “Its A Shame” owes a debt to Tonight’s The Night-era Neil Young, while “Black Shoe” (streaming below) echoes early Wilco, and “Ain’t No Lord” could be performed by Gary Louris. Perhaps acknowledging the granddaddies of the entire genre, Moondoggies closed the set with a cover of the Byrds version of the Dylan classic “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” (also streaming below). The Moondoggies new album Tidelands showcases their unique take on these various genres and establishes an identity for this superb band, and like their predecessors, their growth will only yield greater results.

I recorded this set with the DPA’s at the front of the board and mixed it with a soundboard feed. Unfortunately, for some reason the soundboard has a persistent whine/hum that rendered it unusable. As a result, this recording is the straight audience capture. There is some crowd chatter, but overall its still an excellent recording. Enjoy!

The Hold Steady: January 31, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Eight years ago to the day, The Hold Steady took the stage at Music Hall of Williamsburg – then a much-less-luxurious venue called Northsix in a similarly less luxurious (or luxury-condo-fied) Williamsburg – for their first gig. To hear Craig Finn tell it, that the band celebrated their eighth anniversary in the same spot was a happy coincidence. Whether by coincidence or calculation, I suspect that first Music Hall show had a good bit in common with this one. “What’s up, Brooklyn? We’re The Hold Steady, and we’re gonna have a really good time tonight!” was Finn’s opening proclamation, and I would bet his first opening ever was much the same. Because, although their songwriting has grown more expansive, along with their critical acclaim and the size of their fanbase, The Hold Steady has always been one of the world’s greatest bar bands. The band’s appeal is democratic and uncomplicated: penetrating lyrics you can understand (that are also good enough to wow rock critics); crowd-participating, fist-pumping anthems; outstanding musicianship; and a frontman in Finn who appears to be having the best time of anybody there. This second show of two nights at Music Hall was all about momentum. Breaks between songs were almost non-existent; ditto crowd banter. Finn & Co. worked so hard through this nearly 100-minute set, it could have been a Springsteen show. In terms of the setlist, the band’s latest, Heaven Is Whenever, was well-represented along with Stay Positive, but so was the band’s first record, the less-noticed Frenchkiss Records release, Almost Killed Me, including on a beautifully paced encore that began with the pensive “Positive Jam”, followed by “Southtown Girls” (from Boys and Girls in America) and concluding with an extended version of “Most People Are DJs”. Although it was a Monday night, the crowd was fired up and slam dancing, about as sweaty as Finn himself. I would like to think that whoever attended that first Hold Steady gig would have done the same. If not, they should have: The Hold Steady are a hard-working rock band that is damned hard to deny. Show me someone else who can put on this kind of show – and get this kind of response – on a Monday, and I’ll show you rock royalty.

I recorded this set from about halfway to the stage from the left balcony. The mics were aimed directly at the left stack to maximize direct sound, and the results speak for themselves. Check out the streaming songs below, and enjoy!

Suuns: January 25, 2011 Rock Shop – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Montreal’s Suuns are one ambitious, exciting band. If you punched up any random 30-second clips of tracks from their debut LP, Zeroes QC, you could encounter any number of distinct musical ideas. You might find the Zeppelin-on-acid riffs that are the foundation of “Armed for Peace,” or the brooding, addiction-nightmare hiss of the vocals over a spare beat on “Up Past the Nursery,” or even the slowed-down dubstep beat on “Pie IX”. The point being, Suuns make angular, twisted art rock without a single stylistic straightjacket. From the get-go, this brash set at Rock Shop set a dark mood; the opening number “Skyscraper” blistered us with its marshal, repetitive drumbeat and bassline, clanging keyboard riff and frontman Ben Shemie’s seething, ravaged vocal. Whether during the tightly-wound intro to “Pie IX” or the door-blowing assault of the set’s closer, the eight-minute “Sweet Nothing,” Suuns held our attention with their controlled intensity. They are a challenging band in the best of ways, unconcerned with pop convention or pandering. And although it is true that they can veer dizzyingly between tempos, styles and structures, their talent is equal to their ideas.

I recorded this set from our usual location in this outstanding venue, with the Schoeps microphones and a soundboard feed from the Rock Shop’s team. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We’ve followed Mission of Burma, version 2.0, for almost twice as long as the original run of the band in the early 80s. The most consistent element of their live show has always been the ferocity of the performance. The band plays live with the kind of kinetic energy that defines their sound, and provides earth shattering volume to prove the point. The other aspect MOB’s live show is that the setlists are always quite divergent. The Bell House recording posted last night by acidjack is an entirely different show than what we experienced Friday night at Maxwell’s. Now performing live material for what will soon become their fourth post-reunion album, the band is operating on all cylinders. Each of the three stage players offer new songs that rival the quality of their career output and Friday night’s show featured a healthy dose of them. One might expect that the packed house would become impatient with the mid-set big block of new material, but in fact the mixed-age crowd seemed equally enthralled throughout the show. Mission of Burma rewarded them with a lightning-speed foursome of classics in the encore slot that closed with a reverse play of their debut single — “Max Ernst” into “Academy Fight Song” (streaming below). When the band left the stage the cries for “more” lasted for a good ten minutes before the house music came up — one of the most prolonged crowd calls we’ve seen in a while, and well deserved.

I recorded this set in the same location as all of our recordings from this outstanding venue and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The inimitable Mission of Burma have graced us with their presence a lot recently – first, back in December at Maxwell’s for one of the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows, then Maxwell’s again this past Friday.  But according to fans who saw all three, this bigger show at The Bell House was the king of them all.  It is not uncommon for legendary bands of Mission of Burma’s generation to get by on autopilot, playing the old songs everyone wants to hear in a lower-energy, lamer fashion that is just good enough to sell tickets.  But true the ethos they have maintained throughout their decades-long career, Mission of Burma have managed their comeback with integrity and grit.  Along with timeless punk classics, the band has moved forward to produce vital new material that holds up well to the rest of their catalog.  This show found the band playing four songs from their 2009 LP, The Sound, the Speed the Light, but after that, it was back to the old days for this amazing and, at 80+ minutes, lengthy, set. With the legendary producer Bob Weston behind the board running the band’s sound and tape loops, the sound was dialed-in and, per Bob’s custom, ear-splittingly loud.  Whether you were a new fan coming to see what the fuss was all about, or a longtime fan, you were not leaving this show disappointed – especially not after MOB closed the set with the song that started it all, “Academy Fight Song.”

I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue by the soundboard with the DPA microphones and a hand-built analog preamp to bring a warm, classic sound.  The results are excellent.  Enjoy!
