Antlers: January 22, 2009 Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + CD Release Party Info!

February 1, 2009
By

[photo by Ear Farm music blog]

Last Thursday, The Antlers started the Naked Hearts CD release party at Cake Shop with a tight forty-minute set of primarily songs from Hospice and one interesting cover. The strong closing version of “Two” from Hospice was particularly compelling, as was their shoegaze-style version of the Neil Young song “Harvest Moon“.

Hospice will be released on March 3, 2009. The CD release party will take place on March 5, 2009 at Union Hall and will feature a complete performance of the album from start to finish. The Antlers have promised “a whole mess of special guests” for this event. The Antlers return to the road for an extensive tour throughout March which will find them in Austin for SXSW.

We recorded this performance from the same location as the Naked Hearts recording. Although the vocals are too low in the recordings, we still feel its a fine listen of an excellent band. Enjoy!

Naked Hearts: January 22, 2009 Cake Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads

January 31, 2009
By

The Naked Hearts released their new EP this month and Thursday last (Jan 22), it was time to celebrate. In the venue where they garnered positive attention at CMJ, at Cake Shop Naked Hearts performed a set that featured five of the six songs on the new release These Knees. We were particularly pleased to hear “No One Nothing” for the first time live where the song’s hooks and melodic guitar work translated well.

Naked Hearts have completed their East Coast tour to support the EP, and return to live performance next weekend (Feb 6) at Death By Audio. They will also perform at Glasslands on March 1 before returning to the road for some Midwest dates.

We recorded this set from our upfront location at this venue. The sound quality is not quite what we anticipated, as the vocals are perhaps a bit too light and there is some noise in the drums. Nevertheless, its a fine performance by a fine band! Enjoy.

The Antlers and Air Waves (permission pending) were also recorded and will be posted in nyctaper in the near future.

Annuals: January 28, 2009 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads

[from Annuals MySpace – photo by Brian Vetter]

Annuals are on tour in support of their new CD Such Fun. On Wednesday at Bowery Ballroom, Annuals played an energetic eighty-minute set that drew equally from their two full-lengths and four EPs. The highlights included the new single “Confessor”, “Brother” and as the first encore “Carry Around”. While the band maintains a youthful and exuberant energy on stage, Adam Baker‘s lyrics exhibit a wisdom beyond his years. That kind of maturity has enabled Annuals to move beyond the blog-buzz and its inevitable backlash, and produce an excellent new CD and tour.

We recorded from our standard balcony location in this venue and the sound is excellent. The vocals were mixed too low for the first couple of songs, but the balance improved thereafter and ultimately we are pleased with the high quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Jessica Lea Mayfield and What Laura Says were also recorded and will be posted on nyctaper pending artist approval.

These Are Powers: January 23, 2009 Bell House – Flac and MP3 Downloads

The first time that I saw These Are Powers live was about a year ago, early in the morning in a smokey venue with a cranky old sound system. I absolutely hated them. It never occurred to me that I might just be wrong about them, and that maybe the only thing that was really cranky and old that night was me. Several months later, I read a series of glowing reviews of These Are Powers performance at Siren Festival and had some reservations. Perhaps I should give them a “second chance”.

Friday night at Bell House, the performance by These Are Powers was truly a revelation. We were not distracted by negative conditions and simply concentrated on the band. We got it. These Are Powers create a textured beat and layer it with bass, keyboard effects and processed vocals. The influences are as diverse as German techno, Remain in Light and late-era Butthole Surfers. The band also seems to have a wicked sense of humor, which juxtaposes nicely with the sometime dark elements of the music.

The set included material from the upcoming release from These Are Powers entitled All Aboard Future. The release party for this new CD will take place on February 13, 2009 at Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn. These Are Powers will also perform this Friday January 30 at the DanBro space in Brooklyn in a ToddP event that features NYC bands and Baltimore bands in a “competition”.

We recorded this set from the same location as the Ponytail recording and the sound is excellent.

Ponytail: January 23, 2009 Bell House – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Its almost unfair to offer this show as simply an audio recording. A huge aspect of the experience of a live Ponytail performance is the visualization of the unique quartet feeding off the manic energy of the crowd. Last night at a packed Bell House, as lead singer Molly Siegel gyrated to the beat, the entire front half of the audience followed in sync. Her yips and yelps provided the fourth layer of a soundscape that begins with a feverish beat and two frantic lead guitars. We had not seen Ponytail since their Mercury gig in July, but were impressed at their level of maturity in the last six months — which is remarkable considering that nyctaper selected their June ATJ performance at one of the top ten shows of the year.

We recorded this set inside of the roped-off and elevated soundboard area. We offer many thanks to Bell House for their courtesy and the band for their permission. The sound quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: January 21, 2009 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Direct Downloads + Photos

[all of the excellent photos on this page are by J Caldwell and Alexis Stember – click on the photos here for links to full resolution versions]

If Tuesday night was a celebration of history, Wednesday night at Bowery Ballroom, Animal Collective exhibited why they deserve the accolades. In the most intimate venue they may ever play, AC performed a ninety minute set of near perfection — an impressive balance of energy and proficiency. The Grand Ballroom began slowly and built the energy. The Bowery Ballroom started with an explosive “Also Frightened” that segued neatly into “My Girls. As Animal Collective worked through a setlist front-loaded with trance-inducing tribal chant numbers, the only point in which the show relaxed was the encore segment where the reworked “Winters Love” flowed seamlessly into Panda Bear’s “Comfy in Nautica”. Other highlights again included “Fireworks”, where during the jam segment we focused on the manic percussion work of Panda, and the new number “Blue Sky” (working title) — but in reality, the entire show was a highlight.

[nyctaper vantage point!]

We recorded this set under the most ideal conditions. The sound quality is the venue was outstanding, and the sound staff mixed the band to perfection. The photographers J and Alexis provided us with a “buffer” against any crowd chatter, and our location was a direct line to the PA stacks. The result is a recording that we are confident in declaring is the best unofficial live recording of Animal Collective that you will ever hear. It gives us great pleasure to present a recording of this quality. Enjoy!

Animal Collective: January 20, 2009 Grand Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Direct Downloads (NEW LINKS!)

On a day when the world took an historic step forward, Animal Collective made a little history of their own. Tuesday was the release day for Merriweather Post Pavilion, the band’s eighth studio album that had gathered stellar reviews and “best of 2009” raves even before its release — along with the announcement of a world tour.  The celebration of the new album took place last night appropriately at a Ballroom, and there was clearly a festive atmosphere. Although the band took things slowly at first, the set gradually built the energy for such Merriweather highlights at “Summertime Clothes”, a slightly reworked “Daily Routine” and the set closing “Brother Sport”. It was however, the performance of Strawberry Jam’s “Fireworks” where AC really shined, as Avey began the song with a brief version of the obscure “Lablakely Dress” before stretching out “Fireworks” to nearly 13 minutes — including an inspired middle “jam” section. The remainder of the set — which included “My Girls” and two encores — was merely icing on the celebratory cake.

We recorded this set from the “sweet spot” on the floor with our mobile rig. Although the large ceilings created some muddiness in the sound, we feel that the hyper-directional microphones did some excellent work. Enjoy!

Jonathan Segel: January 11, 2009 Pianos – Flac and MP3 Download

After his impressive multi-instrument performances with Camper Van Beethoven on Friday and Saturday, Jonathan Segel stepped forward and performed a set at Pianos last Sunday. Segel’s solo work features primarily his songwriting and outstanding guitar work. Although the Pianos set was limited by time constraints, there was certainly enough time for Segel to exhibit his guitar proficiency to the intimate yet enthusiastic crowd. The highlights included “Civil Disobedience” and the catchy “I Can’t Help It”.

We recorded this set from our standard location at Pianos. Although perhaps the drums were a bit too loud in the room, the clarity of this recording is quite excellent. Enjoy!

The Victor Krummenacher and Sharon Van Etten sets were also recorded and will be featured on nyctaper in the near future.

Camper Van Beethoven: January 10, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

January 12, 2009
By

As if Friday night’s thorough two-hour career retrospective was not enough, Camper Van Beethoven returned to the Bowery Ballroom on Saturday and delivered a similarly energetic show with sixteen different songs in the setlist. The band dug deep into the catalog for such rare gems as “Joe Stalin’s Cadillac”, “Where the Hell is Bill?”, and “Abundance” among the 33 songs performed. Although we would have preferred to see “Interstellar Overdrive” again, it seemed fairly clear that CVB consciously aimed to provide a completely different and yet equally compelling show on the second night of the stand.

We recorded from the same location as Friday night’s recording, but the mix in the room was slightly better on Saturday. Although the large crowd and more rambunctious fans attended Saturday’s show, our location avoided any significant noise and ultimately this is likely the superior recording of the two nights. Enjoy!

When Victor Krummenacher and Alison Faith Levy perform together as “McCabe and Mrs. Miller” the chemistry between the two is obvious. At Bowery Ballroom on Friday night, the duo opened for Camper Van Beethoven and provided a compelling fifty-minute set of bluesy-americana backed by a band of superb musicians. The setlist consisted primarily of material from Krummenacher’s solo albums, including the recently released Patriarch Blues.

We recorded from the identical location as the Camper set and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Victor Krummenacher is performing a solo set as part of the NYCTaper Presents show tonight (January 11) at Pianos.
