The Weekend – What Happened and What’s Coming

June 16, 2008
By

So, after Death Cab and a near death experience on Tuesday and the long and late night with the amazing opening of the NYC Popfest on Thursday, we decided to rest on Friday the 13th.

We woke up on Saturday morning to find an email from Nick Hallett who conceived and directed the performance of Oneida‘s The Wedding at The Kitchen. He offered us an opportunity to record the Saturday night performance.

When the details were worked out, we arrived at the Kitchen early to set-up and beat the rain. The venue is this amazing art/performance space in far west Chelsea and it has an excellent sound system and crew. We recorded Oneida’s Wedding as a four-channel soundboard/Neumann mix, and the audio is so good that we have offered the master to the participants for possible release. Its that good. More details to follow.

When Oneida was over, we raced back home, changed rigs and out of the wet clothes and took the L Train over the Music Hall and Ladybug Transistor, offered now on nyctaper [HERE]. Unfortunately, the show lasted quite late and when we exited the venue our text message to ToddP was returned with a “show is over” response — in other words, sadly we missed Love is All at the Market Hotel.

Yesterday we spent the day on Governor’s Island recording over three hours of moe. Expect that recording in the next few days. Tonight we’re at Sigur Ros. Whew!

In the following days, we’ll be posting the Oh! Custer recording, Antietam at Brooklyn Public Library, moe. and Sigur Ros. Oneida will be posted if the participants do not use the master for an official release.

June 14 – Too Much to See!

June 13, 2008
By

63_taperbird

These days, the active NYC live music scene often offers two or three shows in a single night that I would like to experience. On Saturday night June 14, there are no less than ten events that would be great to see.

We’re going to Brooklyn to see:
Ladybug Transistor at Music Hall of Williamsburg as part of the NYC Popfest

We may make it out to Bushwick to see:
Love Is All at the Market Hotel, a ToddP concert

These excellent events we will miss:
Mission of Burma at Bowery Ballroom, performing the complete Signals Calls and Marches start to finish
REM, Modest Mouse and The National at Jones Beach
Sharon Von Etten at Union Pool
Evangelista (Carla Bozulich) at Mercury Lounge
Vampire Weekend at Central Park Summerstage
Oneida at The Kitchen, performing The Wedding start to finish
The Music Slut 3rd Anniversary Party at Pianos with Drink Up Buttercup
Rock The Harbor Festival on Staten Island

or we could just stay home and watch the Bonnaroo Webcast!

Well, I guess we’re overdue for an update. The site has posted so much news lately, that the last update was buried four pages back. We have added quite a few shows, to the point where we’ll be out recording at least fifteen concerts in June alone. Death Cab won the battle of June 10th because a generous reader mailed us a ticket. Oneida was removed from June 13/14 because the Kitchen has denied taping permission, but fortunately we have permission to record Oneida at the ToddP outdoor event on July 12. There are a few changes since the last update. We have added Oakley Hall and Oneida events, and removed Pat McGee and Bob Mould. nyctaper One Year Anniversary:

May 11, 2008 marks the one year anniversary of the establishment of the nyctaper blog. We are in the early stages of planning an event. We would like to present a concert with several bands who have been featured on this blog and who permit recording. We would also like to present this concert at one of the many venues we have recorded this past year.

If you are a band who would like to perform at this event, please contact nyctaper, or if you would like to offer any assistance or suggestions, please let us know. We have not promoted a concert in nearly 12 years, and we are admittedly quite a bit out of the loop.

Oakley Hall February 29, 2008 Knitting Factory – Flac Download

March 3, 2008
By

Its not a stretch to say that Oakley Hall are a different band live than on their albums. The acoustic becomes electric, the shuffle becomes a romp, the picking becomes searing guitar solos. There are few bands who can pull off such a switch, but at the Knitting Factory on Friday, it became obvious why this band has built such a solid live reputation after opening stints for Bright Eyes and Gillian Welch. Additionally, their latest release 2007’s I’ll Follow You appeared on quite a number of best-of-year lists, and further enhanced this band’s solid reputation.

We received advance permission to record this set from Oakley Hall, through their site and Jesse the bass player. We set up in the balcony, perhaps a bit further back than we would have liked. The recording is a bit boomy and lacks the clarity of our previous Knitting Factory recording from a similar location (Meat Puppets in August on nyctaper [here]), so we applied some minor EQ in post-production to accentuate the highs. Enjoy!

Oneida was also recorded and will be offered in the coming days.
