The set you’re about to hear—or are already listening to depending on the order of things—is the seventeenth Oneida show posted here on NYCTaper. Without actually doing the legwork, I’m going to go ahead and assume they’re this site’s most recorded band. We’ve seen all types of Oneida shows. Full album performances. Early AM sets accompanied by pancakes. Literally hours-long sets of improvised jams. This one from Palisades is probably the shortest we’ve seen from Oneida, but what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in energy. Like other recent shows, they open with “Cedars” running straight into “Economy Travel.” The transition between the two songs has become so seamless that you barely realize it’s happened and by the time you do you’re deep into the latter song with little memory of how you arrived. New here is their cover of This Heat’s “S.P.Q.R.” A mostly literal cover of the original, it is furiously out of breath, tripping over itself, it’s center of gravity far out in front. If there’s any band that could do this one justice it’s Oneida. Lastly, the Hanoi Jane-sung battle cry “Cock Fight” closes out the set. Convinced it’s Friday (it was Saturday) Jane offers to take us into the weekend with one last jam. Whatever the day, the journey took us somewhere unexpected and we were different than when we had left.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Chris Forsyth one from the same night, with the AKG’s in front of the soundboard and pointed at the right stack plus a soundboard feed from Palisades FOH Ariel. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The relationship between this site and Oneida is such that we feel musically bound to capture every gig that the band plays locally as possible. On Friday last, the odds were against us, as several previous engagements (including our long-planned J Mascis capture) threatened to prevent our Oneida streak. Fortunately, a new friend and contributor came to the rescue — old-time taper and recent re-entry into the world of NYC taping Eric PH was able to attend and record Oneida show at their home studio Secret Project Robot. The show began as our recent recorded shows have done with new-ish tracks “Cedars” and “Economy Travel” before the band stepped back in time to play some “oldies”. “Caesar’s Column” is a song from ten years back that the band has played occasionally over the years, but I don’t think in the many times I’ve seen Oneida that I’ve ever witnessed it played. The setlist also included two tracks that we believe are new songs before the band finished with a couple of favorites. We are streaming the closing “You Get Brighter” which ended this high energy set on a peak.

Eric recorded this show with Church Audio cardioid mics from an up close position and the sound is both crisp and very clear due to this excellent location. Enjoy!

With Oneida, you never have to worry about seeing the same show twice. Even if you’re hearing the same song — for example, the mammoth version of “Cedars” from this night’s show at Glasslands compared to the one we documented at the start of the year at the Knitting Factory — you won’t necessarily know it if you don’t pay close attention. As our review of the Knitting Factory show pointed out, at this point, referring to an Oneida show’s “setlist” is kind of missing the point. This band has long-since abandoned the conventional, which is why they continue to be a major draw in the underground scene in New York seventeen years in despite minimal blog hype and virtually no mainstream exposure. An Oneida show is an event, a celebration of what music can be when all of the downward pressures on creativity are cut.

Joining the band for this show, as he did at Glasslands last year, was James McNew of Yo La Tengo and Dump, whose bass playing mingled nicely with the swirling controlled chaos on the stage. Although technically a four-song “set”, this set had a similar structure, with a 40-minute sequence of “Cedars” into “Economy Travel” adding two shorter songs, “Cock Fight” and “You Get Brighter” (a 48-minute version of which appeared at the 2013 Glasslands show) to round it out. We expect to see some of these compositions whittled down to album length for a future release, but in a way that’d be a shame. This act’s sound cannot be contained on a few pieces of plastic, nor can their songs properly be culled to one right “version”. The beauty is in the expression of it at a given time on a given night–the very reason live recordings exist in the first place.

I recorded this set with a Schoeps MK5 and Schoeps MK8 capsule in the “mid-side” configuration on-stage to allow maximum adjustment capability to the stereo image, combined with a soundboard feed from Glasslands head of production Josh Thiel. The sound quality is quite simply phenomenal — one of the best recordings I think I can take credit for. Enjoy!

Oneida: January 31, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The rabid fans of a classic old band used to say “it doesn’t matter what they play, but how they play it”. The modern day version of Oneida fits this phrase exactly. In their 17th year as a band, Oneida has settled in well as a five-piece band that literally plays with no conventional boundaries. As their recent albums have eschewed traditional song structures, their contemporary concerts don’t really have “setlists” as much as the band just plays. Last fall, we captured an Oneida show at Glasslands that essentially consisted of one “song” and an encore. The show on Friday at Knitting Factory was over an hour and consisted of four separate tracks that weren’t seemingly so much songs as extended musical interplay between the individual members of the quintet, the penultimate of which lasted longer than thirty minutes. That being said, the attraction of the present incarnation of this amazing band is the musicianship. Kid Millions is perhaps the greatest living drummer and his indefagitable work behind the kit is always a wonder to behold. On this night we spent much of the time watching the interplay between the dual guitars of Baby Jane and Shahin Motia, who sometimes take a supporting role but on this night spent much of the set trading furious lead segments. As they approach their second decade as a band, Oneida continues to amaze with their inventiveness and we are certain to see them every time possible when they play locally — which is generally only a few times a year.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a stand back near the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH Rob. The sound quality is quite excellent, enjoy!

Oneida: October 4, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

An Oneida show is a fairly rare occurrence these days, an event not to be missed. Such was the case with this Friday night set at Glasslands, which found the band joined by James McNew (of Yo La Tengo and opening act Dump) to perform an unreleased 45+ minute song called “Get Brighter” (nominally an Incredible String Band cover), followed by “Sheets of Easter” to close out the set. “Sheets” reminds me of what a Bruce Nauman installation might sound like as a song, with its harsh, repetitive vocal giving it a claustrophobic feel that teeters on the edge of madness. “Get Brighter”, on the other hand, was a classic, percussive Oneida sprawl, which comprised the bulk of the set and set a new standard, perhaps, for “interpretive” covers. As always, this show both defied and exceeded expectations, cementing Oneida as one of those bands whose shows should always be a standing appointment.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones at the stage lip, plus a soundboard feed by the Glasslands staff. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Oneida: September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Our friends in Oneida were a late but welcome addition to the “Megafaun and Friends” day show at Hopscotch Music Festival, and as usual, nobody knew what to expect in terms of the setlist. Joined by a number of special guests throughout the set (including the ubiquitous man-of-the-festival, the drummer Chris Corsano), Oneida filled the streets of downtown Raleigh, NC with their complex improvisational post-rock. For this show, we were treated to a rendition of the band’s LP Preteen Weaponry, which this site also recorded a live performance of back in June of last year. As we eagerly await their next album, A List of the Burning Mountains, out on November 13, this just-over-half-hour set of another of the band’s classic albums whetted our appetites for what they have in store for us in just under two weeks.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s hardworking sound team, plus Schoeps MK5 omnidirectional microphones. The sound is excellent, after some initial adjustments to the board mix. Enjoy!

Oneida: May 12, 2012 NYCTaper Anniversary Show at 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

These first five years of NYCTaper have been as unpredictable as they have been profoundly enjoyable. The very act of capturing live music can be exhilarating, but when taping becomes part of an entire subculture that introduces you to new and exciting acts on a regular basis, and allows you to access the act of live musical creation of a band like Oneida, there are really no words to describe the experience. We asked Oneida to play and to curate our 5th Anniversary show and were overjoyed when they accepted. The band has been an important part of NYCTaper over these five years. We’ve recorded them in their own studio for a day’s worth of jams, we recorded them in the old Knitting Factory and the new Knitting Factory, I woke up pre-dawn to record them as the sun rose over the East River in Brooklyn, we’ve captured three of their CD release events. Its been a great ride, and a couple of Saturdays back at 285 Kent, the amazing journey continued. Oneida invited James McNew and Greg Fox to join them on stage for the set. The band then launched into an eighty minute set of entirely new material, and completed the show with another exercise in Oneida boundary-breaking. We are streaming “Bad Habit”, a song that begins in the style similar to Oneida’s “kraut-rock” material, but which detoured into a lengthy noise-rock jam. The final song is called “Reputation” and it was an obvious highlight, as it transpired over an astounding forty-eight minutes as the double-drum attack led the charge through a trip of musical peaks and valleys with a few pit stops in between. As an analog to our amazing first five years of existence, we could not have asked for a more appropriate set closer.

Acidjack and I recorded this set in a manner we had not previously accomplished. I took four discreet tracks from the board into my R-44, while acidjack recorded four channels of audience microphones — the Schoeps mounted center and above the stage, and the Sennheiser cards mounted on a beam 10 feet from the PA into his R-44. The eight channels were synced live. All the tracks were mixed in Soundforge fairly equally in post-production. The result is a professional quality multitrack recording with superb quality. Enjoy!

Five years ago I established this site with a few goals in mind — that my recordings would be the centerpiece in posts that would profile the artists and would encourage people who read the site and download the music to support the artists. I did not however envision that the site would grow to the extent it has reached today. NYCTaper is now a group of four tapers with countless other contributors. The site continues to pursue the original goals, but with the help of our contributors, our readers and our many friends in the music community, we have become something more. With an enormous amount of help from artists, promoters, venues, booking agents, blogs, and others in the music world, taping has been removed from the shadows and the live recording of artists is now seen as a powerful tool to enhance the relationship between fans and artists. When bands now seek to “be on NYCTaper”, its understood that this is a good thing for an artist. And for us here at NYCTaper, its a humbling experience to realize that our hard work and good intentions have made this site work for a community of music performers and music lovers. We hope to keep doing this and to continue to grow well into the future.

We are celebrating this milestone with a concert curated by one of the artists that represents everything we love in music. Oneida is a band that is truly unique. The band is comprised of five incredibly talented musicians who are untethered by the bounds of conventional music genres and completely free of the traps of the music industry. They have been featured on NYCTaper eleven times (plus two solo projects) and last year we worked with them to offer recordings of their studio Ocropolis sessions to raise charitable contributions for Japanese earthquake relief.

Oneida will headline the show on Saturday, and will be joined onstage by special guests Greg Fox (Guardian Alien / GDFX) and James McNew (Yo La Tengo / Dump). The opening bands for the night are Sightings and Prince Rupert’s Drops.

DONATE TO JONATHAN TOUBIN’S RECOVERY [HERE]

The beloved New York DJ Jonathan Toubin, proprietor of the New York Night Train & Soul Clap parties, was recently the victim of a bizarre and horrifying accident while he was sleeping in a hotel room in Portland, OR last month.  The odds were against that he would be alive beyond that night, but Jonathan has beaten those odds.  He is convalescing in a Portland hospital at this moment.  He will likely need years of expensive treatments to restore him to the life he had before the accident.  As you may already know, musicians, DJs and other creative, independent types in America often don’t have the best health insurance.  Jonathan is going to need our help.

Which brings me to this benefit show, a one-of-a-kind bill at Union Pool, organized by the legendary Philadelphia avant-garde instrumental rock band The Notekillers.  Formed in 1976, The Notekillers broke up in 1981 before coming back together in 2004.  Since then, the band have picked up where they left off, continuing to innovate and push the boundaries of rock music.  This show pushed those boundaries even further, as it saw the band splitting into various combos with a number of special guests, including Kyp Malone of TV On the Radio, Kid Millions of Oneida, Greg Fox of Guardian Alien and Bernard Gann of Liturgy.  The various combinations produced a range of thought-provoking pieces, from Fox’s electronics work to a three-drummer trio of Millions, Fox and Barry Halkin of The Notekillers, to The Notekillers’ own instrumental avant-punk.  For his part, Malone played two separate “solo” sets (in a three-person band setup) and also joined the Notekillers and Millions in an improptu supergroup they called The New Party Systems Band.  Added to all of this was a psychedelic light show for some numbers that gave the compositions and even more otherworldly feel.

On a cold Wednesday night, the show ended, appropriately, with Kyp Malone performing “Winter Song” from his Rain Machine solo album.  The song alludes to how love can thrive even in the darkest of moments.  Jonathan Toubin is having one of those right now, for sure.  But in this little room on Union Ave., his friends let the world know that he is not alone.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 “open cardioid” microphones and a soundboard feed by Ian, the house engineer, who was kind enough to arrange it especially for me.  With many stylistic and volume variations, it was a bit interesting to mix down, but I am very happy with it.  Enjoy!

The third piece of Oneida’s Thank Your Parents trilogy was released in June, and the band performed each of the three albums of the project on the same weekend. We previously posted recordings of the Preteen Weaponry set, and the Rated O set. The final piece was performed at the very unique hour of daybreak, which in June amounted to 4:45 a.m on a Sunday. While some of the participants (namely the band) stayed up all night from the Saturday full-day jam session, I decided to make a fresh day of the event, went to bed early on Saturday night and set the alarm for 4 a.m. When I arrived at Monster Island pre-dawn, I expected a virtually empty room, sans band and diehards. Quite to the contrary, the main space at Secret Project Robot was loaded with all-nighters and a few early risers and was essentially a filled room. As the sun rose and reflected off the Brooklyn side of the East River, Absolute II was played in its entirety. This is difficult music to comprehend on a first listen, but as the sunlight seeped in through the open door on River Street, it was an appropriate sublime soundtrack to accompany the brain haze of an early Sunday daybreak seen through the eyes of the sleep deprived. The entire Thank Your Parents trilogy is a unique musical accomplishment from a band that has spent the last decade and a half inventing new ways to express its infinite musical potential.

I recorded this same in the same manner as the previous two sets, with the Neumanns mounted at the soundboard and mixed with a modest soundboard feed. The sound quality is representative of the performance. Enjoy!
