I can still recall my short, sharp gasp upon first hearing Shara Worden, aka My Brightest Diamond, bring the song “Be Brave” to its climax. It was one of those precious moments for me when an artist’s gift comes into focus, and goosebumps and rapt awe follow; when you realize you’re hearing somebody who is that good.  The song’s theme of metamorphosis is expressed in both the mask Worden wears while performing it, as well as in its explosive peak.  “Be changed, or be undone” is the song’s refrain and message, and it is an apt one for Worden’s music.  With a singular vision that combines classical training, cabaret flair and colorful arrangements, Worden’s palette has few borders and her ability to use it has few equals. Her music evolves, progresses, breathes, grows.

Like Björk, David Byrne, and The Dirty Projectors, Worden achieves the feat of making intellectually engaging music without alienating her music’s pop core. That skill affords her both the critical acclaim that she so deserves, as well as a dedicated, educated audience large enough to easily fill the Bowery Ballroom on a Wednesday in the dead of winter, after a holiday weekend. At least New York’s freezing temperatures of late are no worse than the weather conditions in Worden’s adopted home of Detroit, where she decamped in the late 00s after spending the formative years of her musical career here. Surveying the adoring crowd, she told us she missed us.

Now three albums in under the My Brightest Diamond moniker, Worden’s writing has never been sharper or more engaging than on 2011’s All Things Will Unwind, which has a follow-up in the works.  Worden played three of these new songs, “That Point When”, “Looking at the Sun” and “A Bronze Head” at this show. The first two tracks suggested a continuing evolution toward the orchestral pop of All Things Will Unwind, but “A Bronze Head” is pure angular rock, pairing No Wave-ish guitars with a soaring vocal that reminds you, if you’ve forgotten, of Worden’s opera training.  After last seeing My Brightest Diamond in smaller configurations duo recently (once at a private Obama fundraiser, once at a late afternoon performance at MoMA), experiencing the project as a full band, doing a full set, reminded me of just how awesome the range of Worden’s styles can be; the straight-ahead rock of “Golden Star” from her first record and “Inside A Boy” from her second fit right alongside songs like “Be Brave” and “Escape Routes”. Worden is indeed a brave artist; she is also an indisputably great one.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed of the flawless house mix by longtime Bowery engineer, Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding, perhaps the best recording I have made in this venue. Enjoy!

NYCTaper’s Favorite Concerts We Recorded in 2012 (w/ Streaming Songs)

There is always more live music going on in New York than any one person (or four people) can see at one time, let alone record and share. Add to that the tradition of the summer road-trip (or flight to North Carolina) and we had a ton of shows to see, share and discuss. When you record this many shows, it’s pretty easy for your memory of individual ones to get hazy. Some you forget (or maybe want to forget) altogether. This list is not intended as a definitive “best of”, necessarily, but out of the hundreds of bands we saw take the stage, the moments represented here were the ones that not only stuck in our minds, but that we kept turning back to and listening to again and again. This was another tough year for New York and for this country in general, but that didn’t stop people from making great music, and we are thankful to have been there to witness it as often as we were. We hope that if you listened to any of our recordings this year that they brought you happiness, and wish you all the best for 2013.

We were lucky enough to catch two of the Biophilia: Live shows by Björk, an original and rare talent whose bizarre science-meets-music vision brought to life on a 360-degree stage was as electric as the giant Tesla coil onstage. The singer’s voice is without match, and the Icelandic choir that joined her made the material even better. These were some of the most popular recordings on the site this year, even if the sound alone could not quite do these staggeringly entertaining performances justice.

Hiss Golden Messenger – September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival, Raleigh, NC (day show and night show)

Other than that he isn’t in a major media market, is on a tiny, mostly reissue-based label, and has a challenging full-time day job, I can’t figure out why MC Taylor, who performs as Hiss Golden Messenger, isn’t more popular outside of North Carolina. I suppose those three are good reasons, but as this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC reminded us, North Carolina is very much a musical hotbed right now. Taylor’s music is an approachable blend of rock, country, gospel and folk, with a timeless appeal that can span generations and earn Grammy awards. At these two shows – first the Three Lobed Recordings/’WXDU Day Show in a stripped-down setup, and then at night in a larger auditorium with a full band, Taylor performed songs that were flat-out heartbreakingly beautiful and just as equally memorable. The man’s performances are instant classics. If he comes to your town, drop what you’re going and go see what he’s about.

Akron/Family – January 21, 2012 at 285 Kent

Akron/Family almost always put on a memorable show, but the freewheeling atmosphere of 285 Kent combined with A/F almost guaranteed one for this night. This manic, lengthy celebratory, show featured full crowd participation (audience drummers!) and an intense performance.

Dinosaur Jr. – December 1, 2012 Terminal 5

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I had already nominated this show as one of the best of the year before we had even hit the post-show pavement. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the album You’re Living All Over Me, the original lineup played that record and a slew of other favorites with special guests including Frank Black, Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon, Don Fleming, Johnny Marr, Tommy Stinson and NYC’s current favorite journeyman artist Fred Armisen. For me, the rendition of “Don’t” with Gordon on vocals  was the night’s absolute barnburner.

Thanks to the location and its signature product, I’m not sure how clearly most of us, er, actually remember this show. But the entire NYCTaper crew taking a roadtrip to one of New York’s best breweries to see one of our favorite bands had to mark a high point of the year for us. Wilco played an excellent set in at-times-torrential rain that included some rare numbers like “Laminated Cat” as well as a trio of Being There classics as part of the encore. At least, I think that’s what happened….

Ty Segall/Thee Oh Sees – September 24, 2012 Death By Audio

I didn’t have a better time at any other show this year.  Two big acts (one of whom we were writing about back in 2009) in small clubs playing their butts off is always a good combination.

It’s easy to be cynical about a lead singer of a still-thriving band doing a solo album (this one his second). But Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers showed himself to be a musical force in his own right. Laughing and telling stories to the crowd in between numbers, this show gave us a window into the man’s soul in a way that you can’t get at the Truckers’ more big-time performances.

An amazing story of how the original members of Luna decided to reunite with Sean Eden for a charity and play songs we’re not likely to ever hear again live in this configuration. And our pals The War on Drugs were there to play a set (and dedicate a song to us) as well!

DIIV – June 8, 2012 285 Kent

As is so often the case, promoter ToddP got a crack at this band as a headliner before the hype machine had quite hit full steam.  Sure, 285 Kent isn’t Music Hall of Williamsburg size-wise, but there were more than enough in-the-know people to slam-pack this venue to its sweatiest capacity, as DIIV showed themselves to be one of this year’s best new bands (as many other sites would later acknowledge). Oh, and they covered an unreleased Nirvana b-side, too.

Is it hard to overstate how fucking awesome it is to have one of our favorite bands playing one of our favorite sets of theirs ever at a show thrown to celebrate five years of this site’s existence? Why, yes it is.

Yo La Tengo – all of the 2012 Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s, but particularly December 9, 2012, December 10, 2012 and December 14, 2012

At points this December it felt like the site should be called “YoLaTengoTaper” given the amount of time we were spending at Maxwell’s to see this year’s Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows. Our obsession with these shows is well-justified;  the storyline is irresistible. A legendary local band, playing eight shows in a row from their tiny homebase venue to benefit Hurricane Sandy recovery, with special guests like the Sun Ra Arkestra, The Feelies, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Bird, Kid Millions of Oneida, and more is kind of the ultimate holiday gift from a band to its fans, no?

We have followed Sharon Van Etten for years and our respect for her is well-documented, but this homecoming show at Bowery Ballroom represented the full realization of Van Etten as a bona fide full band. The Tramp material in particular here was performed flawlessly, with the grace and intensity we’ve come to expect from her.

Lower Dens – May 2, 2012 Glasslands

I usually find it hard to narrow down the number of “favorite” shows I see at Glasslands, but this year, this Lower Dens show was a huge standout. With the Baltimore band touring behind their expansive new LP, Nootropics, they showed up in front of a maxed-out crowd and proved that their meditative, texture-heavy songs could also kill it live.

Kevin Devine – December 1, 2012 Webster Hall

December 1st must have been one of the best days for music all year. Two of our favorite shows – Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5 and this sprawling Kevin Devine show – happened on this date, and we missed at least two others that would have been must-sees on any other night. We’re not sure any contemporary artist has ever played three full albums on one date, but Kevin did it, and with exceptional grace. A night to remember.

When you see a band on the night that they discover they’ve “made it” in New York, you usually see them at their best. After that moment, things will never be the same for them, internally or externally. From 2009 until this moment, Alabama Shakes was an at-best regionally known band from Athens, Alabama that had been gaining some post-CMJ buzz from 2011. After this Bowery Ballroom show, as I said to Johnny Fried Chicken Boy during the show, they were headed straight for a Grammy, which they now have a pretty good shot at earning. They were obviously humbled and amazed by what they saw in front of them – a slew of industry people and eager fans looking at the “next big thing”.  And they played that way.

Among several shows of theirs we saw this year (including our own CMJ show), this was the perfect example of a band finding its voice in the live setting at the same time as they released a fantastic album – in this case, the largely unheralded but outstanding Look Out Mama. 

Woods – November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg

As many of us were just emerging from Hurricane Sandy hell (and many were still stuck in it), Woods gave Brooklynites a reason to leave the house for this outstanding show at Music Hall. Woods may be of the more recent vintage of Brooklyn bands, but their ability to stretch, bend and reshape a song is of another era. Their appropriately titled new record, Bend Beyond, is only a guidepost for what you get at one of their incredible live shows.

When I was at this show, I thought it heralded a comeback for the Athens, GA-based psychedelic wizards. Instead, this was the last time I would ever see Olivia Tremor Control. Founding member Bill Doss passed away scarcely a month later, and with him, this cherished cornerstone of the Elephant 6 collective. Rest in peace, Bill, and may your music live forever.

Set against a backdrop of the Catskill Mountains, Gov’t Mule and the Levon Helm Band paid one hell of a tribute to one of music’s most dearly departed this year, Levon Helm. As if the idea that music has the power to transcend even death needed affirming, these guys did it with this performance.

Björk: February 25, 2012 Roseland Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

From the earliest days of her four-decade career, Björk has consistently pushed the envelope. Through a career as varied as any performer in pop music history, the centerpiece has nevertheless always been her powerful and profoundly unique voice. As a teenager in Tappi Tíkarrass, she sang in one of Iceland’s earliest punk bands. Her career then evolved from art-punk (Kukl), to international success as part of the Sugarcubes. Björk’s solo career has been distinguished by a variety of styles, from brit-pop (Debut) through the bizarre (Drawing Restraint 9), with virtually everything in between. Her triumphant three album run of Post, Homogenic and Vespertine is acknowledged as the apex of her recorded output, and rightfully so. Those three albums are as good as anything released by anyone in that time frame and the tours that accompanied each release established Björk as one of the most powerful and compelling live performers of her generation. The Vespertine tour in particular was a thing of beauty — a two set affair performed in opera houses across the world with an full orchestra, full choir, and innovative instrumental accompaniment. The live DVD that was released from the Vespertine tour (Royal Opera House) is a breathtaking viewing experience. In recent years, however Björk has released a series of thoughtful but inconsistent albums, with 2007’s Volta as perhaps her weakest album to date. So it was with a bit of trepidation that we approached Biophilia, her new release that promised to link nature, music and technology. As far back as 2001 (Vespertine), Björk has been composing music with the aid of her laptop and she has professed a fascination with the effect that technology has had on the presentation of sound. The strength of Biophilia is that it seems to revisit the interesting aspects of Vespertine from the vantage point of a decade hence. And of course the reassurance for fans is that her voice continues to take center stage.

As part of her NYC “residency”, the Biophilia show moved from its triumphant run at the Queens Science Museum to the Roseland Ballroom. My concerns about the show’s presentation at this particular venue were eased upon entry into the main room. The stage was set up in what would normally be the center of the floor, and there was a vantage point from each side of the square stage to experience the concert. The pre-show music included piano and organ transcriptions of a variety of Björk’s material, and screens placed strategically around the hall projected Biophilia-themed images. The live performers who accompanied Björk were interestingly quite similar to the group that performed throughout the Vespertine tour, including harpist Zeena Parkins, an all female choir, and electronic wizards similar to Matmos (who played on both the 2001 Vespertine tour and the 2003 “Greatest Hits” tour). The setlists for these shows have followed a pattern, and all include the complete Biophilia album mixed in with selected classic material. Interestingly, the first older song performed is “Hidden Place”, the opening track from Vespertine. We have chosen to stream three highlights from the evening, including “Mouth’s Cradle” from Medulla, “Cosmogony” from Biophilia, and the newest addition to the setlist and oldest song she performed, a powerful reworking of Post’s “Possibly Maybe”. The good news of course is that while her voice has matured, Björk is still capable of projecting stunning music from her vocal chords and her singing is still a thing of absolute beauty. And while Biophilia is not the perfect album, it contains an intelligent and compelling message among a large number of outstanding songs which are brought to life in an extremely entertaining show. We left Roseland with a full reaffirmation of the power and vitality of perhaps the greatest female singer of our generation.

I recorded this set with my new mobile rig from ten feet in front of the PA speakers at the south side of the stage. The microphones are customized DPA 4061 omnis finished by Dynamic Audio and run through a custom battery box (also Dynamic Audio) to a brand new Edirol R-05. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Björk: February 12, 2012 New York Hall of Science – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

This same night that the inimitable Björk took the stage at the New York Hall of Science, it happened to be “music’s biggest night of the year” – the annual Grammy Awards.  In a giant auditorium in Los Angeles, the four major U.S. music corporations (“record label” seems too artistic a term) slathered awards on artists who – even in the case of the best performances – dutifully trod the well-worn ground of Motown, 60s rock, by-the-numbers country and preprogrammed pop.  On the other coast, in a science museum in Queens, Björk had concocted a circular stage in the middle of an imposing yet intimate auditorium, ringed by synced video screens.  An Icelandic female choir, a harpist, an electrostatic organ complete with a Tesla coil, a percussionist and a man playing (among other things) four iPads and keyboards shared the stage with her for most of the time.  For just over an hour and a half, Björk and this ensemble performed daring, highly original pieces primarily culled from her latest record, Biophilia, complete with visual narration.

I should not overstate the contrast – though she has never won, Björk has been nominated for twelve Grammys.  But if ever there were an example of an artist who is literally bursting with ideas (as her dress suggested), who combines musical genius, pop songcraft, and technology to challenge the basic assumptions and boundaries of what music is, or what it can be, Björk must be that artist.  A Grammy (or a BRIT, VMA, or any of the other awards she has won) cannot contain or categorize her.  Björk has been such an inspiration to us, in fact, that a Sugarcubes recording was the first recording offered for download on this site.

Biophilia is an innovative multimedia production (not really just a “record”) that combines a set of new songs with a corresponding iPad app, with each of the record’s ten songs married to its own mini-app within the app.  It is the first major release produced in this way, and its goal of celebrating the marriage of nature, technology and art is outlandishly ambitious, and equally well-executed.  Each song has a particular theme (some more concrete than others), like structure, equilibrium, scales, DNA, gravity and tectonic plates.  In musical form, Biophilia mimics the intellectual scope of Jacob Bronowski’s classic book and TV miniseries The Ascent of Man, which explored how man’s unique relationship with nature and technology led to modern civilizationBjörk’s version, of course, is much more colorful, and equally less linear.

As we gathered around the stage, the show kicked off with one word, “Thunderbolt” (many of the songs were announced by name).  From the early notes of the electrostatic organ firing the enormous Tesla coil onstage, it became clear that this show would be a wholly different concert experience.  The pounding dance track, and first single, “Crystalline” got the choir involved in both singing and dancing, and the round stage gave the song a more celebratory and inclusive feel.  Björk seemed attentive to fans all around the stage; while the seated area could have been called the “front”, she did not remain focused there, not only moving around during her performance but performing specific songs in specific directions.  The stage itself served as an additional performer, not only in terms of the visual narration from the screens, but in the artful spacing of the performers and the careful deployment of the sound system.   “Virus” made for a compelling use of the custom setup, as the visual narration largely based on the iPad app drove home the scientific metaphor perfectly (that a virus loves a cell so much it destroys it).  But this wasn’t all-Biophilia all the time, either; “Isobel” from her critically acclaimed album Post became a visual and aural fantasia with the dancers in the mix.  Other favorites as well as rarities, like “Pagan Poetry” from Vespertine and the “Nattura” single, also made appearances, with each non-Biophilia track melding seamlessly with the newest material.

Björk didn’t say much other than “Thank you” during this performance, and she didn’t have to.  The show ended on a loud, clangorous note with the brazen “Declare Independence” from Volta, a track that has earned her some controversy in some quarters (she has dedicated it to local independence movements in nations around the world) and has served as a staple set closer.  Coming from an artist of Björk’s level of artistry, the concept doesn’t come off corny the way such an entreaty often does.  Indeed, this was the performance of a proud, original, fiercely independent artist – one whose example her “peers” in Los Angeles ought to follow.

I recorded this set with DPA 4061 omnidirectional microphones that capture a perfectly localized sense of the concert.  The sound quality is excellent, although frankly, no recording can come close to replicating the experience of seeing this performance live.  Enjoy!

Happy New Year to all of our faithful readers. 2011 was a banner year again for NYCTaper and the site continues to grow in size and recognition. We again must thank in earnest the artists who have contributed their superb music to the site, along with the many venues who have welcomed us. Additionally, the management, labels, agents, photographers, fellow bloggers, fellow tapers, and all other people who have contributed one way or another in making this site what it is today are so appreciated. We hope again to bring all of you the same kind of quality recordings in 2012!

[Caveat: Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime.]

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get us in the door and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember each person on the nyctaper crew does this all for free, the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc., so treat us fairly.

We had a nice bit of recognition this week from some traditional media — the Village Voice covered our recording of The Mountain Goats show on March 27, and the Wall Street Journal online edition had a little blurb about nyctaper.com.

We also have permission to record the Dead Milkmen show at Warsaw on Friday April 16, and a free ticket to give away to any taper willing to catch the show for the site. I will be away and our correspondents are also unavailable that night so need a taper to cover the show.

Readers often compliment nyctaper in email and comments on the site, and sometimes note that there should be more sites like this one. Well, there are! Here is a list of a our “brethren” — the best taper’s blogs from the web.

Southern Shelter: Atlanta GA
Besides being a super nice guy, Sloan from Southern Shelter also captures excellent recordings. Like nyctaper, Sloan uses Neumann microphones and records a terrific array of bands from a variety of genres. Sloan has been a tremendous help to us in securing permission from bands he has taped in the past, including Pylon and Mission of Burma.

Baltimore Taper: Baltimore MD
Jeff is an indefatigable free promoter of the Baltimore music scene, often recording multiple acts on multiple nights in a week. His site is such an amazingly comprehensive collection of Baltimore music, that he has been featured as a lead story in the local arts newspaper, City Paper.

Bradley’s Almanac: Boston MA
Brad publishes one of the top music blogs on the entire web, and has been recognized as such web-wide, and in a feature in the Boston Globe last year. While Brad is primarily a top flight music blogger, he also records quite a few shows and features them on his site in his archive.

Waves and Wires: San Francisco CA
Dave makes terrific recordings of Bay Area performances by top alternative acts. His recording of Bjork from Shoreline last year is one of the best I heard all tour. After a recent brief hiatus, he returned to form with an excellent British Sea Power recording.

Iamserious: Seattle WA
I believe Brian’s site may be the first actual “taper’s blog”, as it appeared in 2005. While he makes terrific recordings of Pacific Northwest shows, and also authors DVDs (available through bit torrent), the site was fairly inactive for a while last year. Brian seems to be back and recording again, which is great news for his readers.

Sometimes I Tape Stuff: Portland OR
I don’t really know much about this site, nor do I know the owner’s name, but she has recorded some excellent stuff recently including a rare post-tour-cancellation Decemberists show in January and the Shins in December.

BrooklynVibes: Brooklyn NY
This is the coming-soon taper blog of our friend Matt. His site will make NYC the first town with multiple taper blogs and will afford New Yorkers double coverage of the live music scene. Matt and I plan to avoid overlapping our recordings. Like nyctaper, Matt uses top flight equipment, but also offers the added dimension of being an outstanding photographer. We are really looking forward to his offerings.
