Papa M: November 18, 2009 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Acidjack reports:
David Pajo, who performs in various configurations as Aerial M and Papa M, is the kind of artist who inspires fervor among fans not for the relentless bombast of his music, or his stage presence, or probably even his indie cred (although one has to point out that David’s having been a founding member of Slint, is pretty damn huge). Rather, he is that unique kind of artist who, by playing restrained, complex instrumental guitar music, proves that “rock” can inspire and enthrall without screaming its head off. The songs in this melancholy set occasionally build to crescendos, sure, but the release is subtle when compared to the euphoric wad-blowing of other excellent instrumental bands like Explosions in the Sky. Over these five songs, David and his two co-guitarists gave us exactly the type of performance one needs on a cold autumn evening. As the music lolls along – especially some of the circa-1999 classics, you can’t help but be reminded that, this time of year, in the mist of loss, there are the stirrings, still, of life.”

Acidjack recorded this set from in front of the soundboard booth and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Many thanks to David and Drag City Records for permission to record this show.

nyctaper One Year Anniversary:

May 11, 2008 marks the one year anniversary of the establishment of the nyctaper blog. We are in the early stages of planning an event. We would like to present a concert with several bands who have been featured on this blog and who permit recording. We would also like to present this concert at one of the many venues we have recorded this past year.

If you are a band who would like to perform at this event, please contact nyctaper, or if you would like to offer any assistance or suggestions, please let us know. We have not promoted a concert in nearly 12 years, and we are admittedly quite a bit out of the loop.

We continue to receive offers of sponsorship (tickets/guest list) from artists and readers who would enjoy our work. Thank you to those artists and readers.

Feel free to email nyctaper if you’d like to make suggestion, ask a question, enter a complaint, introduce us to new music, encourage us, or even make a donation. We enjoy the interaction with our readers.

New Policies
The implementation of the email-for-access policy has been an unmitigated success. We are very pleased to receive so many supportive emails and have the opportunity to interact with the many readers who enjoy the recordings. The large number of emails pointed out by one reader comment (here) has not been a burden, and the total number of anonymous downloads has been reduced by between 3000 and 4000 per day.

Two minor points: one reader posted a private link in a public forum, which I would ask that readers do not do. It defeats the purpose. Secondly, we are very pleased when readers return an email link with a compliment about the recording or the performance. We only ask that in order to help the site and reduce the total number of emails, that you post thoughts about the recordings at the site itself.

In terms of the approved-recordings-only policy, while we are somewhat disappointed when nyctaper recordings are not approved (NY Guitar Festival, Magnetic Fields), the new policy has given us a further opportunity to interact with artists (Kimya Dawson, Rings). In the case of Deakin from Animal Collective, we actually were able to forward the recording for assistance in the progress of a new work. Many thanks to those artists who have been so accommodating and helpful.

nyctaper in Relix Magazine
We’ve been readers of Relix Magazine since the late 70’s, and we subscribed for several years in the late 80’s and early 90’s. A new reader pointed out to us that there is a small blurb about one of our recordings in the new issue of Relix. Thanks to Paul for the scan of the magazine page. Read the blurb (here).

We continue to receive offers of sponsorship (tickets/guest list) from readers who would like a particular artist recorded. Thank you to those readers.

Feel free to email nyctaper if you’d like to make suggestion, ask a question, enter a complaint, introduce us to new music, encourage us, or even make a donation. We enjoy the interaction with our readers.
