75 Dollar Bill: June 28, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

75 Dollar Bill is quickly becoming a staple in New York’s rich improvised and experimental music scene. They’ve got one proper LP, Wooden Bag (out on Other Music Recording Co.), and a few self-released tapes to their name, but it’s their live performances that are creating a splash that even the New York Times is picking up on. Though they’ve been known to incorporate other musicians in their live shows, 75 Dollar Bill proper is a duo, with Che Chen on guitar and Rick Brown on homemade percussion and horns. While that description may give you the notion that the band trades in minimalism, the rich textures of Chen’s guitar played through a small practice amp combined in complex rhythms with Brown’s improvised and homemade percussion will set you straight. This set from Trans-Pecos, opening for the equally mighty Bill Orcutt and Tom Carter, finds the duo exploring some material off their first release, the simply titled cassette (“Every Last Coffee or Tea” and “Water in the Lock”), along with a shorter improvisation and a finale of “I Was Real,” which doesn’t appear to have yet seen release. Though the technique to the music is intricate, it’s not fussy in the least bit—what’s clear is that Chen and Brown are having infectious fun and it’s sure to rub off on you.

I recorded this set with the AKGs at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Bill Orcutt: June 28, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Bill Orcutt is unlike any guitarist I’ve ever heard. He manages to conjure something primal out of the instrument that defies any normal comprehension of music. It’s at once grating and beautiful and each time I see him play, I’m simply awestruck. I most recently caught Orcutt last week playing a Sunday night set at Trans-Pecos along with Tom Carter and 75 Dollar Bill. The first track I’ve left untitled, though it likely picks up on motifs and phrasing from recorded songs. The second is Orcutt’s rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” (thanks to @boxwalla for that). The third track is, as Orcutt calls it, a “cluster” of three songs you may know well but not like he plays them. My best guesses for those are all from his 2013 Editions Mego LP, A History of Every One: interpretations of “Black Betty,” “White Christmas,” and “Solidarity Forever” (though it’s entirely possible I’m wrong on each count).

I recorded this set with the AKGs at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The mix leans mostly on the board feed as the guitar was miked directly. The guitar is loud and clear; the overall sound and performance are excellent. Enjoy!

Bill Orcutt has a couple of upcoming releases. First is a collaboration with drummer Jacob Felix Heule called Colonial Donuts. It’s out October 16 on Orcutt’s own Palilalia Records. Second is a collaboration with Alan Bishop and Chris Corsano, recorded live by our very own acidjack and due out soon on Three Lobed Recordings’ Parallelogram Box Set.

Nathan Bowles: February 12, 2015 Union Pool and January 31, 2015 Silent Barn – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

An canny, skilled and unpretentious kind of player, Nathan Bowles is nonetheless important not because of how he plays, but what he plays. There’s no shortage of banjo music circulating these days — the jam-band scene is filled with bands playing their own pabulum and covering the classic rock hits with the instrument, using it to deliver a little authenticity from the extra twang. Bowles’ career is the exact opposite of all of that — not only does he bring a new style and sound to Appalachian music, but he has an intrinsic knowledge of what a worthy song is, whatever its era.

First as a member of legendary Pelt, the multi-instrumentalist helped to make drone-based music that changed the conversation about what “folk” could be. With the Black Twig Pickers, he and his bandmates have gone deep into American history, both excavating and elevating lost and under-appreciated old-time music. Fitting, then, that his solo work, in particular 2014’s Nansemond, does some of both, giving us traditional Appalachian and Piedmont string music that’s infused with the sound and spirit of the modern avant-garde. Though “solo” in name, Nansemond is a full-band effort, allowing Bowles to produce tunes like the album’s bookends, “Sleepy Lake Bike Club” and “Sleepy Lake Tire Swing” that weave rich guitar textures around his virtuosic banjo work.

These sets at Union Pool and Silent Barn were true solo affairs, with Bowles the support act for Joan Shelley and Elisa Ambrogio, respectively. In front of two crowds that couldn’t have been more different, Bowles performed sets that delivered the full range of what’s meaningful about Nansemond. Both were all-Nansemond affairs that included the “Sleepy Lake” pieces and his straightforward medley of “Jonah and the Whale” and “Poor Liza Jane”. At Union Pool we got “Moonshine Is the Sunshine”, closer to the former numbers in tone, while at Silent Barn, Bowles added something more experimental to the reportoire, with “Chuckatuck”, a song in which Tom Carter’s guitar work figures prominently on the record. You could’ve heard a pin drop among the Union Pool crowd, who Nathan thanked, almost baffled, for how respectful they were. If playing for the younger crowd at Silent Barn — who’d already been treated to a couple of punk bands — represented an uphill climb, Bowles didn’t show it; if anything, the spare arrangement of “Chuckatuck”, extended by three minutes versus the album version, ought to go down as one of that song’s best takes.

The Union Pool set was recorded with a soundboard feed from the house engineer Rob together with my Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones, while Eric PH recorded the Silent Barn gig with a straight soundboard feed from the engineer Mike, with only a tiny amount of his AKG 480 cardiods mixed in.

Chelsea Light Moving is Thurston Moore’s new band. As Sonic Youth is on hiatus and has left the future of the band somewhat of a mystery, the various members have pursued their own projects. Thurston chose to debut Chelsea Light Moving with a series of concerts throughout Europe, but their very first show in NYC took place in mid-September at 285 Kent. The show was presented by Issue Project as a Benefit for Tom Carter, which acidjack outlined in his post of the Gunn-Truscinski Duo set from this show. Suffice to say, we applaud the artists who performed for Tom at this show. You too can support Tom by following this link.

Chelsea Light Moving has released four songs at Matador and through various media outlets in anticipation of a full length release later this year, or early next. At 285 Kent, the band began the set with those four songs. We’re streaming “Frank O’Hara Hit” in which Thurston riffs on the concept of having a birthday in July. Its also the most “familiar” sounding song of the bunch for SY fans. The balance of the set consisted of material that has not yet been released, and the song titles are approximated from our research into info about CLM online. The song we’ve titled “I Come to Get Wasted” (at the suggestion of this Spin review of the show) gave Thurston an opportunity to really stretch and his guitar playing on this track is notable for both its aggression and imagination. We expect that Thurston will continue to grow this material and we look forward to the development of this new project.

I recorded this show in the usual manner for this venue. The Sennheiser Cards were mounted near the stage and after requesting and receiving permission to supplement the somewhat boomy room with a board feed, we mixed in about 25% of the board for clarity in the vocals and guitars. The result is an overall excellent recording, as SY’s FOH Aaron mixed this difficult room about as well as anyone has done. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: September 7, 2012 Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The duo of the guitarist Steve Gunn and drummer John Truscinski, better known as Gunn-Truscinski Duo, was a perfect closer to the Three Lobed Recordings/WXDU Day Show during the Hopscotch Music Festival. The pair epitomizes some of the highlights of the Three Lobed aesthetic – rhythmically complex, guitar-based music with psychedelic overtones that occupies no obvious musical niche, that advances the state of its art while giving a subtle nod to its forebears. With no words sung during their set, it is still easy to locate Gunn-Truscinski as distinctly American; although he melds Eastern elements to his work, Gunn is nonetheless a successor to this country’s folk tradition. What we got at King’s Barcade on this fine Friday afternoon was a short barnstormer of a set consisting of three of the five songs from the duo’s latest release on Three Lobed, Ocean Parkway. Gunn and Truscinski kicked off with perhaps that record’s best song, “Banh Mi Ringtones”, given some extended jamming treatment, followed by “Don’t Lean On Door” and “Ocean Parkway”. For those who would doubt that an instrumental guitar and drum duo can unrepentantly rock, I submit this recording as Exhibit A.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the other sets from this show, with Schoeps MK5 microphones onstage in the omnidirectional setting and a soundboard feed provided by the King’s staff. As I was able to get the mics closer to the performers for this set, this is one of the best quality-wise of the day. Enjoy!

William Tyler: November 16, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It seems about right to refer to William Tyler as an indie rock prodigy. Back when most guys his age were gawky college freshmen, the Nashville native was already playing with Lambchop. By age 21, he’d appeared on a Silver Jews record; two years later, he was laying down tracks with Will Oldham and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Today he plays solo, as well as gigs with Lambchop, and he also has his own record label, Sebastian Speaks. In the somewhat rarified world of solo guitar players, Tyler is one of the most gifted and most recognizable for both his relative youth and his intense, uncharacteristic style. In giving his 2010 release, Behold the Spirit a “Best New Music”-worthy rating, Pitchfork’s Grayson Currin described Tyler’s style thus:

“Lambchop’s oeuvre should give you some hint as to what makes Tyler special. Just as Lambchop’s pan-American indie incorporates soul, rock, country and outsider music into one weirdly warped mold, Tyler integrates a dozen different approaches. He’s as comfortable with an electric as an acoustic, as accomplished conducting a long, coruscated drone as he is gliding through fingerpicked hymns. The English folk of Pentangle and the American hum of Tom Carter are clear references, as are Indian ragas and Appalachian ballads. Unlike the work of fellow polyglot Sir Richard Bishop, though, Tyler engages all of those muses at once, consistently folding them into surprising revelations.”

This PopGun Booking-sponsored show at Glasslands found Tyler dazed from coming straight from his flight but nonetheless ready to play and share new songs. The set featured only two Behold the Spirit numbers – “Missionary Ridge” and “Tears and Saints” – interspersed with new songs, classics and some hilarious storytelling (if you’re ever planning to play in Schwarzenburg, Germany, you might want to listen to Track 5 of this recording first). After playing the first three songs acoustic, Tyler switched to the electric for the final two numbers, including a 12-minute number from his 2008 record Deseret Canyon entitled “Crystal Palace, Sea of Glass”. Behold the Spirit is a lovely offering, even for those who may not be into many solo guitar albums, but seeing Tyler live is an entirely more elevated experience, a chance to grasp not just the what but the how of a great player like him.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by Josh, the house engineer of Glasslands, with some room ambiance from Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth: September 27, 2019 Nublu

For the final night of his Nublu residency, Chris Forsyth held nothing back. The Solar Motel Band (Peter Kerlin and Ryan Jewell) are joined by Daniel Carter, Brent Cordero, Tom Malach (set one), and Ryley Walker (set two) in what is most assuredly one of the greatest Forsyth shows I’ve ever seen. For the first set Forsyth and Malach share guitar lines over tracks from All Time Present and Dreaming in the Non-Dream while Carter trades off between saxophone and horns throughout and Cordero’s keyboard pulses. Kerlin and Jewell are ever-sturdy as the rhythm section. For the second set Walker joins in on second guitar for a forty-five minute jam that begins as “The First Ten Minutes of Cocksucker Blues” and ends in outer space.

I recorded this from our usual location at Nublu. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Hey, ok, we’re sorry. We didn’t attend and record the third week of the epic Chris Forsyth residency at Nublu, but hey we did the first night, and here my friends is the quite remarkable second Friday. This show featured a first set with Forsyth in a trio with bassist Peter Kerlin and percussionist Ryan Jewel, in an opening set that would have satisfied all comers if that had been the entire night. The trio was as crisp as one would expect from seasoned musicians quite intimately familiar with each other. The setlist included some new material, but also reached back into the old catalog for some Forsyth classics. The final two numbers added keyboardist extraordinaire Brent Cordero (King Missile, Psychic Ills, The Occasion) whose psychedelic styled organ colored these songs in brilliant fashion.

As if that wasn’t enough, the special bonus on this night was a full second set that brought back Kerlin on bass, but added Linda Pitmon on drums and Steve Wynn on guitar and vocals. This unique quartet gave us an hour of music that traded songs from the catalogs of the protagonists with expertly selected covers — Wynn as Lou Reed protégé and super-fan was a natural to play “Rock & Roll”, and Forsyth as former Richard Lloyd student expertly handled “Friction”. But for the curfew, one got the impression that this special band could have played all night. We wish they had.

This historical Chris Forsyth residency at Nublu concludes this coming Friday at 8pm when Chris is joined by Ryley Walker and Daniel Carter. Don’t miss it.
