Ryley Walker: March 12, 2019 Union Pool

Listen to this recording for the in-between song comedy, if nothing else.

Huh? Oh, right, but this is Ryley Walker we’re talking about — the Very Serious Musician who writes Very Serious Songs and does Very Serious Things like 55 minute psych-improv blowouts with Steve Gunn and Ryan Jewell. This is Ryley Walker, who does a 2LP song-by-song cover of an unreleased Dave Matthews album as his second record of the year — a cover album so good that it convinces music snobs that yes, Dave Matthews is actually a pretty darn great musician. Come for comedy if you must, but become lifelong believer because of the music.

This was Ryley’s second of four residency shows this month at Union Pool. In addition to a truly hilarious extended riff about garage bands at SXSW circa 2009 (with a note-accurate parody song included) and Chicago bands who fail to get picked up by Touch N Go (with a note-accurate parody song based around the riff from June of 44’s “Dexterity of Luck”), Ryley and drummer Jewell delivered a new jam (title TBD), a very familiar cover (“If I Were A Carpenter”), songs from the exceptional 2018 LP Deafman Glance, and “Primrose Green,” from the 2015 album of the same name that seems like aeons ago musically. Whether or not certain naysayers at the time made lame Van Morrison comparisons (based as much on the album’s cover art as its sound), many of those songs are really good, and it’s a joy to see them coming back in the rotation.

As I’ve mentioned before, what feels like the biggest difference from the 2015-era shows is how Walker’s live renditions more closely match the album’s style. Sure, it’s still “sad acoustic guitar indie folk man” music in a sense (as Walker put it), but “Telluride Speed” and “Spoil With the Rest” were played here more or less in the style of the album versions, versus the 14-minute jam version of “Halfwit In Me” that’s long been a tour staple. I don’t know if it means that Walker feels more comfortable with the Deafman songs as the band played them in the studio, or if these songs are just waiting their turn for the extended treatment, but either way, it’s working.

This show also features a hilarious story about taking acid in relation to a King Crimson concert (listen to the story) and some self-deprecating musings about Primrose Green. This might be the first show I’ve witnessed by a serious musician that almost seemed to spawn a new genre: sort of a Yo La Tengo Hanukkah set with a comedian, except that the comedian appears during the set.

There are two more Tuesday nights this month where you can catch Ryley Walker at Union Pool, with more special guests promised. Based on the first two, it’s pretty clear that you shouldn’t come with any preconceived notion of what you’ll hear, but be prepared to enjoy yourself. Tickets for next week’s show are here.

Doug Graham once again outdid himself behind the board. Combined with my Schoeps MK5 mics, it’s yet another excellent recording for you to enjoy.

Grateful Shred: March 1, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl

March 13, 2019
By

Take a look around at a Grateful Shred show and you notice something…different. Folks in the crowd don’t look like they saw the Grateful Dead in the 70s, the 80s, or hell even in the 90s. No, Grateful Shred aren’t your dad’s Dead tribute band and here (mostly) everyone’s under forty. Maybe that’s just Brooklyn, but you can tell the Shred are aiming for something different as much by their approach to the catalog as by their openers and guests: local jammers Garcia Peoples opened this most recent pair of shows while San Francisco’s Howlin’ Rain played last year. The newly-local Ryley Walker (who seems to be showing up everywhere this month) joins in during “Space” and sticks around to solo on “Touch of Grey.” Touchhead or no, the result is delightful. That jam concludes a long second-set suite that includes “Estimated Prophet” into “Truckin” into “The Other One,” capping off over forty uninterrupted minutes of bliss and probably the highest high I’ve seen Grateful Shred hit yet. These guys just keep getting better.

I recorded this set with the MBHO hypercardioids from my usual spot at Brooklyn Bowl, resulting in a pretty good audience tape. There’s an expertly made board tape also over at the LMA, if that’s your thing.

William Tyler: February 26, 2019 (Le) Poisson Rouge

March 6, 2019
By

Here’s a nice companion to William Tyler’s record release show last month at Rough Trade NYC. That show was the start of his tour for Goes West and as it turns out, was only a small preview of what he’s been up to. For the (Le) Poisson Rouge crowd, Tyler pulled out all the stops, playing acoustic and electric songs, and inviting locals Steve Gunn and Ryan Sawyer to join in for a few. Gunn plays on “High Anxiety” from Modern Country and contributes guitar and vocals to a cover of Michael Chapman’s “Among the Trees.” Things kick into high gear when Ryan Sawyer joins Tyler for “Whole New Dude” from the Lost Colony EP. They make an outstanding duo and the energy on that song is just incredible. Is there hope someday for a Tyler-Gunn-Sawyer jam sesh? Let’s plant the seed.

I recorded this set with the MBHO hypercardioids, combined with a board feed courtesy of the venue and engineer, Jason. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Meg Baird: January 22, 2017 Park Church Co-op

February 1, 2017
By

Finally capping off our coverage of the epic Ranaldo-Gunn-Baird tour of 2017—last but certainly not least—here’s Meg Baird’s opening set. We’ve long been fans of everything Meg Baird, from Espers to her solo work to the Baird Sisters to Heron Oblivion, but we haven’t yet had occasion to post a solo set until now. This recording captures Baird on the last date of her two-week tour with Lee Ranaldo and Steve Gunn (those sets posted here and here, respectively) and finds her playing a couple songs off her latest solo record for Drag City, Don’t Weigh Down the Light, along with a few covers: “Old Man on the Mountain” from fellow traveler P.G. Six, “Beatles and the Stones” by The House of Love, and the traditional Scottish folk song “Willie O’Winsbury.”  It’s been an emotional couple weeks for all, and Baird provides a touching introduction introduction to “Willie O’Winsbury,” describing the unique ability of traditional songs to communicate with us through time. Only a little over a week old, this set nonetheless feels like a transmission from the distant past. Our work continues… But in the meantime, feel free to accept into your life those small joys, like this gorgeous acoustic guitar set from Meg Baird.

I recorded this set from my improvised tapers section in front of board, combined with a feed from Park Church’s engineer Jasno Swarez. Despite some ambient noise from the church, the sound is very good. Enjoy—and resist!

Lee Ranaldo: January 22, 2017 Park Church Co-op

January 26, 2017
By

For all the reasons I need not repeat here, protest music is perhaps more vital now than at any other time in my lifetime if not everyone’s. Lee Ranaldo’s engagement with Occupy Wall Street has been well documented; and it was around that time that he started performing Neil Young’s classic “Revolution Blues” regularly at shows. Coming off inauguration weekend, I think we can safely call all of the songs Ranaldo performed last Sunday protest music, each song imploring us in its own language to “resist, resist, resist, resist.”

Wrapping up his two-week tour with Meg Baird and Steve Gunn (Steve’s set here, Meg’s set here), Ranaldo showed up at Park Church Co-op with a slew of new material (some of which we’ve heard before), plus covers of The Velvet Underground’s “Ocean” and the aforementioned Neil Young tune. Will the help of a few friends—left to right in the above photo that’s Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, Lee, and Steve—the glorious crescendo of “Ocean” is as overwhelming as the lyrics’ crashing waves suggest. These days, we need art not only for protest but also to uplift, and this performance is nothing if not uplifting. Closing with “Revolution Blues,” Lee is joined by Steve Gunn and Meg Baird, both on guitar and vocals, Alan Licht on guitar, and Georgia Hubley on drums. We’ve heard Lee do this song a few times now, but trading verses with Meg the forty-year-old song and its lyrics feel refreshing as we listen with new ears.

I recorded this set from my improvised tapers section in front of board, combined with a feed from Park Church’s engineer Jasno Swarez. The sound is excellent. Enjoy—and resist!

This was our third trip to the Sunday Ramble with David and Paul and it was just as fun as the two previous broadcasts. The guys played some of our favorite recordings (the Mountain Goats, Ryley Walker, Luna, Wussy, Steve Gunn, Disappears, Decemberists and Wilco) and let us talk about the site and so many other things. Take a listen! And remember to follow Sunday Ramble on Mixcloud for future broadcasts.

Nathan Bowles: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

Nathan Bowles has made in appearance in all kinds of bands connected to Three Lobed Recordings in one way or another, from Pelt to the Black Twig Pickers to Hiss Golden Messenger to Steve Gunn‘s band to his own fine work. And that’s not even solely as a banjo player, either; Bowles is an accomplished drummer, as his work with Gunn in particular has shown. As essential as he has been to the greater Three Lobed family, it was of course an honor to have him for the label’s sixteenth birthday party.

Originally slated to be a bit of a reprise of his 2014 duo performance with Daniel Bachman here at King’s in Raleigh, NC, this set ended up being a special kind of Bowles solo show, as he tried out some new material slated to appear on his forthcoming album on Paradise of Bachelors. The thirteen-minute “I Miss My Dog,” which Bowles recently performed at Pickathon, is as powerful a statement as he has made musically, and furthers the notion that his command of this instrument is not about some kind of “revival” but rather a true evolution. You have only to listen to the short and sweet “Burnt Ends Rag” that came after it to understand what a talent Bowles is, and why we’ll be so fortunate to see him in so many different settings in the years to come.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings of the day, with a soundboard feed from engineer Justin Perrachon and a combination of onstage and audience mics. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Sunburned Hand of the Man: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

This was our second North Carolina journey with Sunburned Hand of the Man, having witnessed the awesome spectacle that was their 2014 Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU day show at Hopscotch. Like the recent show in New York City that we caught at Union Pool, this night at the Three Lobed Recordings Sweet Sixteen Spectacular found the out/noise collective taking more of a song-based approach. Which isn’t to say, in any way, that this was somehow a “traditional” performance; like anything Sunburned and many things Three Lobed, this performance celebrated the experimental and the expeditionary, with those American flags in the backdrop an ironic comment on the freak flags that these artists so willfully fly. Once again, we got to witness a furious version of “The Jaybird,” but other than that and “Double Purity,” this was an entirely different performance than at Union Pool. It meant something for a band of Sunburned’s underground stature to be here alongside such a diverse array of Three Lobed veterans, from Nathan Bowles’ forward-looking Appalachian banjo performance to Steve Gunn’s solo guitar set to Mary Lattimore and Elysse Thebner’s ambient harp and keyboard set. Among all that great music, perhaps nobody more than Sunburned (and OK, Bardo Pond) stood for all the heads in the audience, the unique gathering of the like-minded that this label has brought together. Once again, it was a divine thing.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other performances of the day, with 8 channels of combined soundboard feed from engineer Brad Womack, onstage microphones, and audience microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
