nyctaper Featured on Jambands.com

This month nyctaper is featured as the website of the month at Jambands.com. As jambands.com is one of the earliest and most well-established music sites on the web, it is a particular honor to be recognized by this site. While nyctaper does not focus primarily on music that would be labeled “jamband”, taping has been a large part of that music culture, and our recent recordings of Gov’t Mule (here), moe. (here and here) and Marco Benevento (here) have put us on the jamband radar. Thanks jambands.com!

Schedule Update: John Vanderslice

Due to a family event on Saturday night, we will not be attending the U-Melt show at Sullivan Hall. However, we have added an event on Sunday night March 30th — the outstanding artist John Vanderslice at Mercury Lounge.

John Vanderslice released one of the top albums of 2007, Emerald City on Barsuk records. We communicated with John our request to record, and not only received a friendly invitation to capture the Mercury Lounge concert, but we were also invited to the soundcheck. This should be a tremendous experience, to witness an artist of this caliber in such an intimate setting, and we hope to capture a recording of the quality that this concert demands.

Update: We have also received permission from John of Deer Tick to record their opening set on Sunday night.

nyctaper One Year Anniversary:

May 11, 2008 marks the one year anniversary of the establishment of the nyctaper blog. We are in the early stages of planning an event. We would like to present a concert with several bands who have been featured on this blog and who permit recording. We would also like to present this concert at one of the many venues we have recorded this past year.

If you are a band who would like to perform at this event, please contact nyctaper, or if you would like to offer any assistance or suggestions, please let us know. We have not promoted a concert in nearly 12 years, and we are admittedly quite a bit out of the loop.

We continue to receive offers of sponsorship (tickets/guest list) from artists and readers who would enjoy our work. Thank you to those artists and readers.

Feel free to email nyctaper if you’d like to make suggestion, ask a question, enter a complaint, introduce us to new music, encourage us, or even make a donation. We enjoy the interaction with our readers.

New Policies
The implementation of the email-for-access policy has been an unmitigated success. We are very pleased to receive so many supportive emails and have the opportunity to interact with the many readers who enjoy the recordings. The large number of emails pointed out by one reader comment (here) has not been a burden, and the total number of anonymous downloads has been reduced by between 3000 and 4000 per day.

Two minor points: one reader posted a private link in a public forum, which I would ask that readers do not do. It defeats the purpose. Secondly, we are very pleased when readers return an email link with a compliment about the recording or the performance. We only ask that in order to help the site and reduce the total number of emails, that you post thoughts about the recordings at the site itself.

In terms of the approved-recordings-only policy, while we are somewhat disappointed when nyctaper recordings are not approved (NY Guitar Festival, Magnetic Fields), the new policy has given us a further opportunity to interact with artists (Kimya Dawson, Rings). In the case of Deakin from Animal Collective, we actually were able to forward the recording for assistance in the progress of a new work. Many thanks to those artists who have been so accommodating and helpful.

nyctaper in Relix Magazine
We’ve been readers of Relix Magazine since the late 70’s, and we subscribed for several years in the late 80’s and early 90’s. A new reader pointed out to us that there is a small blurb about one of our recordings in the new issue of Relix. Thanks to Paul for the scan of the magazine page. Read the blurb (here).

nyctaper new year!

January 2, 2008
By

Happy New Year
A Happy 2008 to all of our faithful nyctaper readers. We had a great 2007, and hope to continue to bring quality live recordings to our readers, and connect our readers with the wonderful artists we feature. This past year we built some solid cooperative relationships with artists, management, and of course the band’s supporters. We hope to continue to foster these positive relationships and encourage performers and readers to contact us.

Upcoming Recordings
We recorded moe. on December 30, but the recording needs more post-production. We also recorded Pierce Turner on December 9, and that recording needs quite a bit of work (removing audience noise). Both of these recordings will ultimately be featured on this site. We also continue to dip into the ‘archives’ and encourage more archive requests from readers. We intend to honor every request for which we have a recording.

Upcoming Events:

John Prine:
January 5, 2008, Carnegie Hall (oops, my ticket “source” ended up being a scam–any help getting a ticket for this sold out show would be appreciated)

Natalie Merchant:
January 8, 2008, Hiro Ballroom, NYC

Marco Benevento & Guests:
January 10, 2008, Sullivan Hall

The Royal Albert Hall Project:
January 12, 2008, Wintergarden, World Financial Center

Kimya Dawson:
January 13, 2008, Southpaw, Brooklyn NY

Fiery Furnaces:
January 17, 2008, Maxwell’s, Hoboken, NJ

Mission of Burma:
January 19, 2008, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY

Marco Benevento & Guests:
January 31, 2008, Sullivan Hall

Citizen Cope:
February 16, 2008, BAM Opera House

Magnetic Fields:
February 21, 2008, Town Hall, NYC (Review only, not recorded at band’s request)

The National:
February 22, 2008, BAM Opera House, Brooklyn NY

Bruce Springsteen:
February 28, 2008, Civic Center, Hartford, CT (review only)

Other Upcoming Events
I have a ticket for Springsteen in July at Giants Stadium, and plan on purchasing tickets for the Nassau Coliseum shows this Spring when they become available. I will also be taping an upcoming Black ’47 show, but probably not St. Patrick’s Day. I also have a great ticket for Meredith Monk at Symphony Space on February 15, but I am not sure if we will be recording that show. We continue to receive offers of sponsorship (tickets/guest list) from readers who would like a particular artist recorded. Thank you to those readers.

Feel free to email nyctaper if you’d like to make suggestion, ask a question, enter a complaint, introduce us to new music, encourage us, or even make a donation. We enjoy the interaction with our readers.

On to 2008!
