Oneida: June 17, 2011 Secret Project Robot (Rated O Set) – Flac and MP3 Download + Streaming Song

The second piece of Oneida’s Thank Your Parents trilogy is itself a three-pronged release. Rated O is the most ambitious album of the three and last Friday at Secret Project Robot, the band undertook the huge task of playing the 3-album set straight through. And even then, Oneida took liberties with the music and stretched the two-hour album to nearly two and half. The songs themselves resembled their recorded counterparts but in the live setting, Oneida stretched and mutated the pieces into vehicles for all kinds of improvisation. The very stylistic elements that encompass the varied genres of Oneida music were all featured during the lengthy set — from noise (“End of Time”) to ambient (“O”) to krautrock (“Ghost in the Room” streaming below) to punk (“It Was a Wall”). Rated O has it all, and Oneida did it all.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Preteen Weaponry set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida has completed the multi-year project called Thank Your Parents — a three album musical endeavor meant to represent the vast musical expressions for which this band is capable. This past weekend, the Parents trilogy was celebrated with a three-day long performance which encompassed on Friday the performance of the first two records of the trilogy, Preteen Weaponry and Rated O. Saturday was dedicated to a full day of ocropolis-like improvisational pieces replete with guest appearances, and Sunday was the daybreak complete play of 2011’s final piece Absolute II. Friday night’s show began with the most controlled set of the weekend — a faithful run through the first part of the trilogy, 2008’s Preteen Weaponry. That year we recorded one of the few complete performances of the album at of all places the South Street Seaport. It was a concert on a bleak rainy day in a strange locale, but Oneida ripped through the album and proved that a suite of three lengthy instrumental pieces could be compelling even out of its element. On Friday under the inventive light displays and among the art installations of Secret Project Robot, Oneida played virtually the same flawless set very much within their element. The multi-colored lights often masked the intricate work of the keyboardists while the PW lead instrument, Kid Millions’ drums, were prominently displayed throughout. As Bobby Matador stepped up from the keys to strap on an electric bass for the balance of the set, the band kicked into overdrive and the final twenty minutes of this first set of the weekend was Oneida at its very best.

This recording was captured with the Neumann microphones mounted in the back of the room and mixed a limited soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We recorded the Rated O set and the dawn performance of Absolute II and those sets will be posted soon.

Oneida: April 2, 2011 Ocropolis IV – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

This Saturday, we went on a journey with the band Oneida that began at 1pm and ended at well after midnight on the following day. Continuing one of the band’s most exciting and ambitious traditions, the band performed six improvisational sets for a select audience in their private Williamsburg studio and rehearsal space known as the Ocropolis. The impetus in this case was disaster relief for the people of Japan – in particular, an effort organized by Shinji Masuko of the Boredoms for Japanese artists and musicians who may fall outside of some more traditional safety nets – and we are sure that both the donations and the inspiration will be warmly received by our brethren in the Far East.

Ambition is an important word to consider when reflecting upon these performances. A band that released a 3xCD set (the critically lauded Rated O) in 2009, Oneida have never been particularly respectful of the commercial strictures of modern bands. And with a fan base that revels in their ability to test the sonic limits at every show, they haven’t had to be. Armed with the freedom to do what they want and the courage to actually do it, Oneida can make some fucking incredible noise.

The level of musicianship required to create these 35-45 minute improvisations cannot be understated. Like the bastard child of free jazz, minimalism, punk and rock n roll, these sets managed to explore a huge range of textures, sounds and moods while remaining cohesive and captivating. Throughout each, we were buoyed by a sea of perfect beats by wunderkind drummer Kid Millions (whose snare hits threatened to overwhelm the first set’s mix entirely) as organist/guitarist Bobby Matador, guitarist/bassist Hanoi Jane, guitarist Shahin Motia, and organist Barry London created an intense vortex of sound. Fittingly, the highlight of the entire day was the climactic final set, a 40-minute slab of deadly psych rock that left us all reeling. It would be days before we could fully process what had taken place before us – longer still for our ears to stop ringing. Despite being a band with musical ambitions so huge, Oneida had once again fulfilled them.

We recorded this set with six high-end microphones placed strategically around the room to capture the full breadth of the band’s sound. You may notice some differences in sound between the sets as we moved microphones around to achieve optimal placement.

Special thanks to Oneida for inviting us to be a part of this extraordinary event. Watch for their next Ocropolis event, a multi-day art and music installation at Secret Project Robot, where they will do a series of full-album performances of the Thank Your Parents trilogy.

Please note that because this was a charity event, you will be expected to donate an amount of your choosing to Shinji Masuko’s Japan relief PayPal account in order to download the recordings. Oneida: October 29, 2010 Monster Island Basement – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On Friday night, Oneida moved about 50 feet from their rehearsal and recording space and played a late night set at Monster Island Basement. The show had the intimate feel of an open rehearsal and jam session, as the band started the set with four “new jams” — basically untitled works in progress. While the new songs are consistent in sound with recent material, the final untitled number featured a Zep-like riff and definitely veered more towards metal. About halfway through the set, the crowd bounced to “Up With People” as the first familiar song of the show, and continued through the remainder of the set which ended sometime around 2 a.m. The following night, the band moved upstairs for the 6th annual “Brahloween”, but on this Friday show it was the new and intimate that prevailed.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted on a pole fifteen feet from the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Oneida: March 19, 2010 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads

March 21, 2010

On a night when most of their contemporaries and colleagues were 1000 miles away in Austin Texas, Oneida returned to their roots and played a show the likes of which their fans have never seen. It was 13 years ago when Oneida played its earliest gigs at the Knitting Factory’s prior location on Leonard Street. While the personnel has shifted, Oneida has always been capable of literally stretching the boundaries of their indescribable music to unimagined lengths. On Friday night at Knitting Factory’s new Metropolitan Avenue location, there were two distinct portions of this show where Oneida fans were shaking their heads with knowing grins — the powerful opening “Ghost in the Room” (sans vocals) flowed into a freeform jam in the key of B that last for twenty-nine minutes, but never lost its intensity. While the improvisation contained quiet moments, melodic sections and times of sheer fury, the band’s commitment never wavered. Its that unparalleled musical stamina that was again on display during the set’s closer. “Sheets of Easter” has had longer versions, but at over eight minutes, the machine-like repetition of the “light” riff was nevertheless as dizzying and mystifying as ever.

We recorded this set with the four microphone rig set up on the right corner of the soundboard booth. The microphone configuration was arranged to maximize the sound reception in this rectangular room and I am quite pleased with the excellent results. Enjoy!

Oneida: July 24, 2009 Market Hotel – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 29, 2009
By

We will leave the review of this show to the professionals — Rob Harvilla did a piece on the new Oneida album Rated O and this performance in today’s Village Voice. What the article did not mention was the serious upgrades to the Market Hotel and the pro-quality sound system that ToddP rented for this particular night. We were pleased with the vast improvement in sound quality, as was the band to whom we spoke after the show. The system had a significant bass presence which can be felt in this recording, and a clarity not heard at this venue before.

We recorded from the center of the floor with the four microphones and we are extremely pleased with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Oneida Exclusive: There will be another OneidaFest this year, most likely in December and it will be at a ToddP venue that we are not at liberty to name. We recorded last year’s OneidaFest [here].

Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Shows: NYCTaper Preview – Oneida Opening First Night

December 19, 2008
By

As we announced/leaked all the way back in October two weeks before the official announcement, Yo La Tengo is set to perform their eight nights of Hanukkah at Maxwell’s with special unannounced opening bands and comedy.

We will be present on Tuesday December 23 and Saturday December 27. Our recording of the December 6 show last year was not only our 2007 Concert of the Year (see 2008 list here), but also one of the most requested recordings at this site. We expect that the two shows from 2008 will be equally excellent.

A very short while ago, one of the opening bands leaked their participation. Oneida will open the show on December 21, which also happens to be the first night. We are scouring the rumor mills and some of our knowledgeable connections for more information on openers. Check back to this topic for more info!

Yo La Tengo is offering their limited edition t-shirts online this year. In previous years the shirts were only available at the shows.

Oneida: December 13, 2008 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads

December 14, 2008
By

In a survey taken for the NY Press Music Issue a couple of months ago, we were asked to participate, and listed Oneida as the best live act in NYC. Last night at the Knitting Factory’s “Oneida Fest“, the band proved us right. On one of the final nights of the Manhattan Knitting Factory, “house band” Oneida delivered an intense skull-splitting 65 minutes of their most powerful psychedelic post-prog. The setlist included three eclectic covers — from the late destructo-hardcore of GG Allin (actually “Discipline” is a Throbbing Gristle song) to Funkadelic to The Modern Lovers. The later featured Oneida co-founder “Papa Crazee”, i.e. Pat Sullivan of Oakley Hall on vocals. The final treat was an extremely rare dip into the earliest of their music — a 26-minute headrush of a version of “Ballad of Vaurice” from their first album.

We have seen Oneida five times on 2008, and each time was a thoroughly different, but equally intense experience. Three of those recordings are still featured on this site, February at The Knit, March at Market Hotel, and August at South Street Seaport.

We recorded from the riser area of the balcony and were extremely pleased with the sound in the venue, which was mixed to perfection by the house soundboard tech. The volume was intense without distortion and each instrument was separated and identifiable. Subsequently, the sound quality on this recording is superb. Enjoy!

Oneida Fest! December 13 at Knitting Factory

December 7, 2008
By

Oneida Fest is all night show at the Knitting Factory featuring a series of like-minded bands and friends of Brooklyn’s great psych-rock band Oneida. We know tickets are still available for this show since we bought one on Friday.

Today Oneida posted the set times. Oneida is going on at 1:45 am, which is still not the latest we have seen them start a show. In March, we recorded Oneida at the Market Hotel when their set started at 2 a.m. NYCTaper captured Oneida three other times this year, at Knitting Factory in February, at the Kitchen in June, and at South Street Seaport in August.

Here are the details:

“Sat Dec 13th – 8pm
Ticket – $10 (wow cheap!)

Main Space:
Mighty Robot Visuals
DJ Knox Overstreet – all night

9pm – Brava Spectre – nuts CT balls out psych hardcore
10:30pm – Parts and Labor – brutal squelch anthems of da highest order
12 – Sightings – Ever-flowin’ inspirational Kali-style punk (the goddess dudes – look it up)
1:45am – Oneida

Tap Bar
10 – Pterodactyl – breakneck choirboys
11:30 – Dirty Faces – a train that leaves the rails in order to destroy its destination
1am – Neptune – home-made instruments, amazing songs/performers – never seen a bad show by these dudes.

Old Office
9:30pm – Cave – pristine chaos, motorik crystals
11pm – Knyfe Hyts – musical Rube Goldberg face punches
12:30 – Oakley Hall – craft, songs, singing, energy, soul – what else is there? Well – they aren’t Zeppelin – that’s the only criticism I can think of.”

We also captured Oakley Hall twice this year, at the Knit in February and Glasslands in March.

Oneida SS Seaport LaPutt
[photo by Chris LaPuttPrefix Mag – complete set [here]]

On Friday night, Oneida performed their new album Preteen Weaponry for the first time in NYC and the scene could not have been more surreal and yet completely appropriate. As the black rain clouds hovered overhead and the holiday crowd filtered in and around the Seaport, Oneida dipped into their bag of magic tricks and pulled out the most psychedelic prog-rock music they have produced to date — an album with influences from A Saucerful of Secrets to Bug — that could have been appropriately performed in 1968, 1988 or 2008.

As Bobby rose from his keyboard seat to strap on the bass for much of the Preteen set, the center stage of the band shifted to Kid Millions. The keys and guitars set the mood for the album and sustain the long-form melodic structure, but its the drums that are the lead instrument on this album. Kid propels the band while beating relentlessly in double time. Each part of Preteen molds directly into the next, but it is the consistent perfection of the beat that provided the backbone for this outstanding performance.

We recorded this set from a fine position inside of the soundboard tent, and we are quite grateful to the excellent sound crew for the permission to get under their tent and avoid the rain. We are doubly fortunate that the wind did not hamper this recording and we were able to capture this excellent concert with a superb recording. Enjoy!
