Lee Ranaldo: December 16, 2015 Market Hotel

He spent more than half his life in one band, but if anything is evident from Lee Ranaldo’s career after Sonic Youth is that’s he perhaps the most versatile artist performing in NYC these days. We were there when Lee launched his band in support of his first proper solo album. The band that eventually became The Dust have played consistently over the last four years and are responsible for three albums since 2012. Over that period, Lee has also performed solo acoustic sets, acoustic duos, and as we experienced at Trans Pecos last month, as an acoustic trio. But there has always been more than guitar. Lee’s earlier works have also included spoken word, poetry and art installations often in conjunction with Lee’s wife the renowned artist Leah Singer.

12162016 Sleater Kinney 03475

The show that Lee Ranaldo performed as the opening set at the grand re-opening of the Market Hotel was in many ways a synthesis of his many artistic endeavors. It was a duo with the percussionist Tim Barnes with Lee nominally on “guitar”, but the piece was more of a stretching of the boundaries of how to “play” a guitar. The set began with Lee’s guitar hanging by a rope from the ceiling and continued with Lee’s use of the instrument in previously unimagined ways. He used the venue as part of the piece as the stage floor, the ceiling pipes and the front pillar (@marketpillar) became means by which the guitar was played. As Barnes accompanied Ranaldo with flourishes of percussion, often subtle but at other times manic, Lee maintained a cacophonous symphony of noise that reverberated around the packed and buzzing venue. It was a glorious inauguration for the Market Hotel and christened the venue with the type of imaginative and inventive programming that will surely follow as the calendar turns to 2016.

Lee will be performing solo again at the City Winery for Joseph Arthur’s 6th Annual New Year’s Day Celebration, before heading to Europe for solo dates in late January and early February.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted on the second Pillar and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite outstanding. Enjoy!

Holy Sons

Holy Sons is the seventies-inspired heavy rock solo project from Om/Grails drummer Emil Amos. If you’ve ever seen either of those bands live, you’ll have surely noted Amos’ irrepressible energy behind the kit. It’s clear that in his free time that energy translates into some incredibly prolific songwriting—since 2000, he’s released eleven albums as Holy Sons. The most recent two, this year’s Fall of Man and last years’s The Fact Facer, were both released on Thrill Jockey, always an indicator of high quality. For his touring in support of Fall of Man, Amos has tapped Dommengang‘s rhythm section of Brian Markham and Adam Bulgasem. To say this trio rocks is an understatement—these guys could break concrete using only guitar, bass, and drums.

Holy Sons will be back in NYC on October 30 at City Winery as part of a tour with Jay Farrar. That show is sold out, but if you’re lucky enough to have gotten tickets, be sure to show up early for Holy Sons. The full listing of tour dates is over at Thrill Jockey.

I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue, with a soundboard feed from Saint Vitus’ FOH. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

In the early days, I did these lists of all of the recordings for a given year at the site. I hadn’t done one since 2009. Lately, there have been requests to continue to post these lists since it gives people easy access to the archives. So here is 2014. I’ll work backwards to previous years until the entire site is cataloged. Please don’t take this as an invitation to download vast quantities of recordings at once. That’s just gluttonous and the site and the server can not handle massive concurrent downloads. If I find someone downloading like 10 or 20 shows at once, I’ll just block your IP address, its that simple.

Mike Doughty promised to reimagine some of the favorites he wrote with Soul Coughing, and with a successful PledgeMusic campaign, he made it happen. The new LP features brand-new arrangements that hew closer to the vibe of Doughty’s solo work, with more straight singing and less of the scatty sing-speak that he popularized as “M Doughty” back in the Soul Coughing days.

Doughty has refused to play Soul Coughing songs live for years; his book documents his animosity toward his former bandmates and his perception of how and why the band ended. When he played an acoustic doubleheader at City Winery earlier this year, it was the first time I had seen Soul Coughing material live since the late ’90s.

You don’t have to buy into, or agree with, Doughty’s perspective on the band’s breakup to enjoy the new-old songs. If you were a fan of the band in its heyday, it won’t take long to remember how infectious and unusual many of these songs were. From their breakout hit “Super Bon Bon” to their big hit “Circles” to Ruby Vroom’s standout “Screenwriter’s Blues”, this sound hasn’t been replicated by anyone. It was Doughty’s, and his bandmates’, alone.

We are offering three shows in this post: First, an exclusive “VIP” acoustic performance of five songs prior to the main set at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC; second, that night’s main set, where Doughty paid a much-deserved and touching tribute to the deceased longtime 9:30 Club fixture Josh Burdette, the kind of person that, if you have ever been to that club, you would remember. Finally, we have a homecoming performance at NYC’s Webster Hall, which due to my failure to charge my preamp, is missing the last few songs. It and the 9:30 Club set are fairly similar.

The acoustic set is the best example of where Doughty is musically today — you hear him deliver some powerful renditions of both his solo stuff and Soul Coughing material in a manner that he grew more comfortable with over the past decade-plus. It’s heartfelt and reflective, more personal than any Soul Coughing performance ever came across.

The Soul Coughing material presents a different challenge. You have a performer who used to be known for spastic, hyperkinetic performances in his 20s, backed by musicians from a variety of disciplines, trying to redefine that material in a newer, more mature image. Soul Coughing shows were just that — shows — and some songs’ delivery covered up some of the original arrangements limitations. In some instances, these “re-imagined” Soul Coughing songs felt the way Doughty said in The Book of Drugs that he wanted them — leaner and meaner, with fewer distractions. “Unmarked Helicopters”, from the X-Files soundtrack, certainly makes that argument, as do, among others, songs like “True Dreams of Wichita” and “Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago”. “St. Louise is Listening” highlights its essential opening lyric when Doughty’s smoother arrangement is deployed.

In other cases, the reimagination becomes more of an adjustment: Without the classic bass line once played by Sebastian Steinberg, a song like “Super Bon-Bon”, with its mad flow and seemingly random lyrics, is no longer what it was. Absent the classic loop credited to Mark De Gli Antoni on “Screenwriter’s Blues”, Doughty’s lyrics have a different cast than they did in the original. That said, that Doughty dared to mess with his original success on this album is a credit to his growth in the past 13 years. As a fan of both his solo work and Soul Coughing, I think I speak for more than myself that we always hoped to hear some of his ’90s work alongside his current material. So, Mike — thank you.

DC-based friend of the site Kubacheck recorded both of his sets with MBHO cardiod microphones. My recording from Webster Hall was made with Schoeps MK4V microphones in a mobile fairly close to the stage. We have streaming tracks and full downloads of each, and all three are excellent. Enjoy!

We’ve entered a new era at NYCTaper. After living on the unprotected edge for five years, we suffered the wrath of the new web — multiple hackings, imbedded spam and the horrible results of a website without substantial security. In the last couple of months, we hired an expert to rectify those problems and the result is that we seem to be free of the roving bands of malicious bots that permeate the web these days. That being said, there was substantial damage to the site’s archives that I am meticulously repairing month by month going all the way back to the first post. I’m now up to the Summer of 2010, and if you go back to 2007, 2008 and 2009, you will notice that all of the flac links have now returned to the topics (no more email requirement), posts that disappeared have been restored, posts have been fixed by restoring missing media, photos, fixing links, and removing odd characters. I continue to drudge through the archives and hope to come current within the next few weeks. Its a painful arduous task, but knowing that we now have complete backups is comforting. Also, its been a hoot to relive the “old days” and listen to some recordings that I haven’t heard in years. Two obvious conclusions are that our current recordings are a lot better than in the old days, and that I’ve seen a f-load of shows in the last 5+ years. Thanks of course to acidjack, Johnny and hiandlo for their assistance in restoring their old posts, and of course especially to acidjack for carrying the current workload as I finish this task. We expect that in the future NYCTaper will be a reliable and consistent provider of live music. We love what we do and thank all of our readers for your continued support.

I also realize that we’re way overdo for a Calendar post, so here goes. Lots of fun stuff here, including the usual highlight of any year, the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows!

[Caveat: Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime.]

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get us in the door and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember each person on the nyctaper crew does this all for free, the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc., so treat us fairly.
