Wilco: September 22, 2011 Central Park Summerstage – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

If there’s a band we hope that people associate with what nyctaper stands for, its Wilco. They have appeared so many times on this site that its often difficult to invent new superlatives to describe the Wilco concert experience. Last night at Summerstage, the band again delivered to its fans another epic NYC show, on par with the legendary Irving Plaza or Hammerstein or McCarren Pool shows of previous years. On tour in support of their latest release, The Whole Love (due on September 27), the band again delivered a two-plus hour high-energy set that dug deep into their catalog (an A.M. cut streaming below) while it also featured eight songs from the new album. The title track has already earned encore status, and we’re streaming it below. Of special note was Jeff Tweedy’s remembrance of the Wilco sets at Town Hall almost exactly ten years to the day, when a still-shocked NYC found some comfort in superbly delivered and heartfelt two nights of music. Ten years later, Wilco is still providing the City with the same gifts.

The entire NYCTaper crew was on hand to record this set. While we feared the worst of the elements, fortunately the rain held off and the winds were minimal. We set up near the back of the floor because our original advantageous position was actually an obstruction to the lighting projections. The crew ran 3 separate rigs, featuring twelve high-end microphones. This particular recording is my standard Neumann + DPA 4021 rig, and its a surprisingly excellent recording, all things considered. We will likely feature some of the other captures in the coming weeks. Enjoy!

Wilco: April 3, 2010 Wellmont Theatre – Flac and MP3 Downloads (Streaming Sample)

[Photos for nyctaper by Kate Ehle — many more here]

If Wilco continues to expand their live show at the same rate that the sets have expanded in the last few years, the 2014 Wilco tour will consist of five hour shows with 60 songs. While that seems absurd, its almost inconceivable that in an era of 50-minute headliners, Wilco regularly plays for over three hours with an almost ridiculous (thirty-eight on this night) number of songs. In April, we recorded both shows at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair New Jersey and featured the first night a few days after the show. Unfortunately, the recording of the second show was technically problematic, and the significant post-production meant that it got pushed to the back of the nyctaper queue. Although the editing was a chore, it was a pleasure to revisit another epic Wilco show in the NYC area. For this tour, the band performed a brief “acoustic set” mid-show, which gave them an opportunity to trot out some oldies. This particular night, several Being There tracks were played, along with rare nuggets like “Laminated Cat”, “Candyfloss” and “Airline to Heaven”. The set closed with a two-for of Big Star covers, in tribute to the death in March of the legendary Alex Chilton.

The sound quality of this recording is below the usual standards of this site. We offer this show because of the large number of requests for a recording, and because this date does not seem to have been taped by anyone else. There were two major losses of the right channel during the first half of the set — one lasting 20 minutes — and those have been patched by replicating the left channel. There were also many peaks of close-clapping, the most egregious of which have been isolated and reduced. This particular venue has also not achieved its maximum sound potential and frankly the talented Wilco sound crew could only do so much. With those caveats, enjoy!

Wilco: April 2, 2010 Wellmont Theatre – FLAC and MP3 Downloads

[Photos for nyctaper by Kate Ehle — many more here]

The Wellmont Theatre lies in the heart of Montclair, NJ, an upscale suburb of NYC that is so pretty it could even give a hardened Manhattanite a twinge of envy.  Despite not being a terribly rock-n-roll town, Montclair welcomed Wilco and its fans with open arms, and received a sprawling three-hour rock show in return.  In the land of Springsteen, Wilco seemed determined not to be outshined by the length or enthusiasm of the Boss’ mammoth performances, and indeed, they got it right.  The show broke down into three distinct segments – a fiery electric set that kicked off with the one-two punch of “Wilco (The Song)” and “Bull Black Nova”, followed by an acoustic set, and ending with another huge electric set, the highlight of which was the band’s tribute to Alex Chilton when they played Big Star’s “Thank You, Friends,” which we have provided as an individual download below.  The almost entirely crowd-sung “Jesus, Etc.” was also a fine moment of community in which – whether you came from nicest part of Jersey, the farthest corner of Brooklyn, or anywhere else – everyone was reminded why they wanted to spend this Friday night with this band.

I recorded this set dead front and center behind the band’s sound booth with the 4-mic rig, with the hypers lower down toward the crowd and the DPA mics higher up but still well below the overhang of the balcony.   Although the venue had a boomy sound due in part to an underpowered house PA, the mix, with a little help from computer magic, is now crystal-clear and of excellent quality.  Enjoy!

Wilco: July 18, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium – Flac and MP3 Downloads

A road trip to see Wilco — after Monday’s Coney Island excellence it seemed like a fine idea, and in the end it was infinitely worth it. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the two-hour ride north in fine company along the banks of the Hudson was quick and pleasant. While Dutchess County Stadium has the same general minor league field construction as Keyspan Park, its setting was a world away from Brooklyn. The vibe in the venue was friendly, relaxed, and without a scene-maker in in sight. The band seemed to understand its surroundings, as their play was deliberate though focused, and Jeff’s banter was playful and good-natured. The setlist was similar to Monday’s show but with seven different songs out of the 29 played. This show featured two early “rare” numbers — “Far Far Away” (Being There) and “Too Far Apart” (AM), the latter of which I had never before seen Wilco perform live. The show length was again approaching two and a half hours, and at 2:27 is the longest Wilco show I have ever seen.

This recording was made under absolutely ideal conditions. The location of the “section” of tapers was quite close to the stage at approximately 40 feet deep. The stand raised the microphones to an unobstructed fifteen feet, with a straight shot at the huge stacks and minimal crowd noise. The four-microphone rig captured a clear recording of such exquisite detail that we seriously recommend that readers listen to this recording on the best possible speakers available. Do the recording, the band and yourselves justice and don’t limit listen to computer speakers or an ipod. Enjoy!

Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band was also recorded and will be posted here soon.

Wilco: July 13, 2009 Keyspan Park – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 14, 2009

Wilco have given me, as a fan, literally everything one could ask. In twenty shows over thirteen years, I have seen them perform at intimate venues (Mercury, Irving), at Festivals (Fleadh), and at celebratory events (New Year’s ’04). They consistently perform extended two-hours-plus shows. They permit fans to record audio and freely share the concerts. Wilco have released nearly a decade and a half of consistently excellent albums.

Last night at Keyspan Park, they provided another unexpected and thoroughly mindblowing gift. Wilco brought the incomparable Yo La Tengo onstage to perform as two bands together the most appropriate Wilco song for the occasion “Spiders”. As two of my favorite bands of all time completely shredded the 13-minute song, it was hard to determine whether the ice chills were from the event or the cold winds coming off the beach. Historical, indeed.

The balance of this concert was standard Wilco excellence – with five songs from the new Wilco (The Album) sprinkled among twenty-six career spanning songs (no AM songs, though). The two-hours and twenty-one minute running time was a mere two minutes short of last year’s McCarren Pool marathon.

I recorded this set with the four-microphone rig from a location at the front inside of the soundboard area. The major impediments were distance (estimated at 300 feet), and occasional strong winds from the west. There was some chatter in the area in front of the board — what amounted to the rear of the field section, but its less of a factor than the elements. While this recording does not provide the same quality as last year’s McCarren recording, or the 2007 recording from Hammerstein, it is nevertheless a fair reproduction of the concert experience and a fine listen. Enjoy!

The Yo La Tengo set was also recorded and will appear on nyctaper in the near future.

Wilco at Coney Island – Written Setlist and Show Recording Coming Soon

July 14, 2009
By

Above is the actual setlist for tonight’s Wilco show, donated by Wilco’s soundman Stan — who did a superb job at tonight’s baseball stadium show at Coney Island’s Keyspan Park.

What is not noted on the setlist is the mindbending joining-forces of Wilco and Yo La Tengo for the most out there version of “Spiders” we have ever seen.

We recorded the show with the four-microphone rig from inside the soundboard area. The long train ride home offered an opportunity to listen on headphones and it really came out quite excellent, despite the pitfalls (wind and distance) of an outdoor event. The recording is coming to nyctaper ASAP. We also recorded Yo La Tengo’s opening set and that will follow shortly thereafter.

Wilco August 13, 2008 McCarren Pool – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Wilco has spoiled its fans for years — long energetic shows, consistently excellent albums, interesting collaborations — they are the finest working American band. Wednesday night at McCarren Pool, the Brooklyn fans were treated to a special evening of perhaps the most complete Wilco performance NYC has ever seen. After 27 songs, eleven encores, and two-and-a-half hours of music that covered all aspects of their career, there could be no gripe from any of the 5000 guests save for the most petulant, fickle or inexperienced concert-goers.

The setlist was a complete review of Wilco’s music — of the first 12 numbers there was at least one song from 7 different albums. All the classics were performed, along with a nice selection of rare old chestnuts (“Far Far Away”, “Kingpin”) and some obscure tracks (“Blood of the Lamb”, “Pieholden Suite”). The band also added a trio of horns (“Total Pro Horns”) for this tour who added an interesting dimension to several older numbers. Jeff Tweedy’s voice has fully recovered since his surgery two years ago, and it seems to be completely back to its original strength. Jeff threw quite a few playful verbal ribs at the crowd, although he refrained from throwing actual food into the audience.

We recorded from directly in front of the soundboard in the center. While the packed crowd was a bit too chatty around us, the music was expertly mixed by Wilco’s talented sound crew and they provided us with a superb sound capture. Enjoy!

Wilco Tonight at McCarren

August 13, 2008

Wilco opening Lollapalooza with “Misunderstood” 1997-style

As longtime readers of nyctaper are aware, I have seen Wilco on almost every trip they have made to NYC since our first Wilco concert at Mercury Lounge in 1996. Our recording of their Hammerstein show last June has been one of the more popular downloads in the history of this site, as well as has been the vintage 1997 recording we offered from the archives.

So when the McCarren Pool show sold out in minutes and craigslist posters were asking $100 per ticket, we decided that we would miss this trip to NYC. It was only after I watched Wilco’s excellent Lollapalooza performance via webcast (see youtube clip above) that I decided that Wilco was playing too well to miss them this year. The old closer-to-the-show-the-easier-to-buy trick worked, as we just got a ticket for face via craigslist. See you there!

Wilco February 15, 1997 – Irving Plaza – Lossless Download

October 29, 2007
By

Of all the Wilco shows I have attended, this is the best one. At the NYC stop on the amazing Being There tour, the band’s performance is energetic, fun, tight and inspired. This is the infamous “deli tray” show, where the band tossed HBO’s complimentary food items into the audience before the second set of encores. The HBO show “Reverb” eventually broadcast about 30 minutes of this concert.

This recording was made from the center of the floor. Three tapers brought equipment to this show, but the venue would only allow one rig–so we chose the guy with the Schoeps microphones. I patched my DAT out of his recorder. The microphone stand can been seen at points during the broadcast. This recording captures that energy of this show in a way that any dry soundboard could not. Enjoy!

The June 25, 2007 Wilco performance at Hammerstein Ballroom is still available in the nyctaper archives (here).
