NYCTaper Upcoming Events — How Do You Like the New Server?

November 15, 2008

After recording five full sets in four nights, we have taken a few days to get over the exhaustion. We will not be out in the field until next Wednesday, and then its a fairly full schedule for the rest of the year.

The new server seems to be working quite well. The number of hits to the site this week have more than doubled since last week and we have experienced no outages and certainly no complaints. Again, please consider making a donation to nyctaper to help defray the costs of this substantial upgrade to the site.

In 2009, we plan to add new tapers and also photographers. If you are interested in a “position” in either category, please email NYCTaper. These are obviously not pay positions, but you will get guest list passes and exposure of your work to approximately 10,000 readers per day.

We expect to attend and record the following shows, subject to change. There will be dates added in the interim.

The Antlers – Personnel Change and Upcoming Gig

June 30, 2008
By

We missed the Antlers set at the main street stage of the After the Jump Fest (pictured above), but we caught up with Peter, Darby and Michael at Sharon Van Etten’s Zebulon show last Wednesday (recording coming soon!).

Today it was formally announced what we had learned during that conversation — that bassist Justin Stivers is leaving the Antlers to dedicate full time to his solo endeavor Pet Ghost Project. Justin’s final performance with the Antlers will be at Union Pool on July 17th at a Jezebel Showcase. Also appearing at the July 17 show are our friends The Loom and old friends Spanish Prisoners.

Peter is currently working on replacing Justin in the Antlers, and based upon our information, there should be some interesting new developments in the personnel of the Antlers.

Bridges and Powerlines May 11, 2008 Pianos – Flac and MP3 Downloads and News!

Bridges and Powerlines were the headliners and final band at the nyctaper Anniversary Concert. The new release Ghost Types has received a ton of positive press, from Pitchfork to Current TV to Paste Magazine. Stereo Subversion did a recent lengthy interview [here]. The positive reviews are well deserved, as Ghost Types is a superb collection of alt-synth-pop songs that seem to pull from a litany of influences and yet sound completely original. Their performance at Piano’s on May 11 was short and sweet, rushed by time constraints but long enough for this excellent band to exhibit their pop brilliance.

Bridges and Powerlines will perform again this coming week:
When: Friday May 30, 2008
Where: Cake Shop [MAP]
Time: Doors at 8 p.m.
Note Also: Spanish Prisoners are the 3rd band on the bill

This recording is the same raw soundboard feed as The Loom and Antlers recordings we have posted previously. The mix for B&P is too light on guitar and keys, and we hope to capture a better mix at the show later this week. Enjoy!

The Antlers May 11, 2008 Piano’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads and News!

May 22, 2008
By

The Antlers were the third and most familiar band to perform at the nyctaper Anniversary Concert. This set was the third time we had seen the Antlers live, but the first time we heard some of the newer material that will appear on Hospice — the release planned for late 2008.

Hospice will be the first Antlers release to feature the complete band that has appeared at the live performances, rather than a recording produced entirely by Peter Silberman. The familiar faces of multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci, bassist Justin Stivers and drummer Michael Lerner will add an ensemble feeling to the album, while such guests as the compelling vocalist Sharon Van Etten will round out this much-anticipated release. Check on Peter’s blog for updates.

See the Antlers Live in NYC at these upcoming performances:
Jun 16 2008 8:00 Cake Shop
Jun 21 2008 8:00 After The Jump Fest Brooklyn, New York
Jul 17 2008 8:00 Union Pool Brooklyn, New York

This recording is the same source as The Loom recording posted [here], a raw soundboard feed. We would have preferred to run microphones, but as we produced this event it was not possible. Enjoy!

This recording is now available to Download in FLAC and MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].

nyctaper Anniversary Concert Announcement!

April 27, 2008
By

63_taperbird

nyctaper was born one year ago from a simple idea — that I could create a live music community that would bring together artists and fans through the free share of my live recordings. The site has had its share of growing pains, but in many respects it has succeeded beyond my wildest expectations. The people I have met, the music I have experienced, and the relationships that have been established have made this year absolutely unforgettable.

To celebrate the one year anniversary of nyctaper, I will host a concert with live performances by four bands that have been featured on this site. We are extremely excited to offer a lineup of musicians of such quality and variety, and indeed we are humbled that these bands have all agreed to perform at our concert.

Here are the Details

THE BANDS:

Bridges and Powerlines
Bridges-and-Powerlines3
Last week Bridges and Powerlines released an album that we expect will expose this excellent band to wider audiences. Ghost Types (Citybird Records) was the result of two years of writing and recording that has produced 11 songs with hooks and harmonies to spare. The addition of Bridges and Powerlines to the nyctaper concert roster will give us an opportunity to experience the energy this band offers live audiences.

The Antlers

The Antlers Peter Silberman writes songs of depth and maturity that evoke such luminaries as Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine. The 2007 release In The Attic Of The Universe (Fall Records) was a mainstay on best-of-year lists, and the anticipated 2008 release Hospice offers the promise of a performer reaching his songwriting prime. nyctaper captured the live Antlers in February, and experienced a live band of talented musicians that breathed new life and energy into the sublime recorded material.

Spanish Prisoners

Spanish Prisoners were the d.i.y. and grassroots web success story of 2007, as their self-released album Songs to Forget received universal praise. The offbeat lyrics and quirky hooks recall acts as diverse as the Kinks and Donovan, but the result is less derivative than a completely unique mix of talents. 2008 has seen the official release of the CD, and nyctaper was lucky to experience the live Spanish Prisoners at their CD release party in early April.

The Loom

The Loom are a Brooklyn based quintet that present a uniquely urban approach to americana music while transcending an alt-country label. Sample some tracks at their MySpace page.
This will be our first opportunity to experience The Loom live!
