Lower Dens: May 2, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Before coming out for an almost-unheard-of-at-Glasslands three-song encore, frontwoman Jana Hunter of Lower Dens stepped out from behind the keys and mic stand to stand in front of the monitors, among the crowd, and close the main set with the Houston musician Arthur Bates’ “Hours”. And why the hell not? Though known for being a bit reserved onstage, Hunter has watched her Baltimore-based band be anointed an “It” band in the city that decides such things. She certainly has nothing to be self-conscious about, if she ever did.

Not that this extremely sold-out show, or the spate of overwhelmingly positive recent reviews, are the first time anyone noticed the band. Their first record, Twin-Hand Movement, had a lot to recommend it, and critics agreed. But Nootropics, which dropped this week, is the kind of record that takes the band’s sound and appeal to the proverbial “next level”. Rather than an excellent followup to a good start, Nootropics accomplishes the feat that bedevils many second records – evolving the band’s sound and broadening its sonic palette while retaining the core of what drew notice in the first place.

As to that palette, those of us who came of age in the eras of Luna or Galaxie 500 wouldn’t have had trouble finding the Dean Wareham influences all over the band’s early sound, with the fuzzed-out guitars forming the sea that bore along gentle but compelling melodies. The band’s first offerings from Nootropics, “Brains” and “Propagation”, continue that tradition, but also make it clear that there is more going on this time around, with Eno and Kraftwerk influences bubbling to the fore. Stripped of the album’s gauzy texture and replacing it with the raw immediacy (and minimal processing) of the intimate Glasslands stage, Lower Dens made the case for being able to carry well-produced album material in the live setting. It never hurts to have a sellout crowd, of course, and there were so many people crowding the stage there were practically people on top of the band. I won’t be surprised to find the same state of affairs at Bowery Ballroom in a couple months when they end their current tour.

Not only was this set long by Glasslands standards (71 minutes is practically a Springsteen concert in a venue where most sets clock in well under an hour), but the encore included a special cover of the Houston psych-rock pioneers Red Krayola’s “A Portait of V.I. Lenin in the Style of Jackson Pollock” – proving that the Texas-born Hunter, like any good musician, also has a great record collection.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed provided by Glasslands and the band’s FOH. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Lower Dens play Bowery Ballroom on Thursday, July 19. Tickets go on sale May 4 at noon.

British Sea Power: April 21, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On the final night of their US tour British Sea Power let loose the likes we have not seen before. Three years ago, their final night show at Maxwell’s was a hoot, but what went down at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday night was a grade above. The show began with unbridled energy as the band ripped through a series of Yan songs normally reserved for the end of the set. And it was that end of the set where things pretty much became anarchy. Following a strong version of “Stunde Null” from 2011’s Valhalla Dancehall, the show took on a decidedly crazy bent, as show-opener and former BSP keyboardist and current Brakes leader Eamon Hamilton pranced around the stage and ultimately the entire venue with a single drum and space helmet — an act he was reprising from his days in the band. The rare-ish “Apologies to Insect Life” followed and led through a cacophonous transition to the improv number “The Spirit of St. Louis”. As “Spirit” is generally reserved for the end of the show hijinks, the last half hour was as unpredictable as it was uncontrolled. The band shelved the encore on-off stage cliche, but instead launched directly into their early Top 40 UK single “Carrion” followed by a version of “Rock in A” that led to about half the crowd joining the crowd on stage, along with Eamon and the other opener A Classic Education. After nearly two hours, the show didn’t end as much as it just devolved into mayhem, as band and crowd danced on stage until the beat was lost and exhaustion caused the band to give up trying to hold it together. It was perhaps the perfect ending for a show as crazy, inspired, and completely entertaining as we have seen all year.

I recorded this set from the standard balcony location in this venue with the four-microphone rig. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Fanfarlo: October 20, 2009 Music Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Fanfarlo play NYC again tomorrow night, December 18 at Webster Hall. Tickets are still available.

On the opening night of CMJ 2009, Fanfarlo headlined the Brooklynvegan CMJ show at Music Hall to a packed house. Earlier in the day, we literally struggled with the crowd to get into the main room of Pianos to see Fanfarlo at the Music Slut party. On the heels of their outstanding debut album Reservoir, Fanfarlo quickly became a worthy CMJ “buzz band”. Their music combines traditional folk instruments (violin, mandolin, accordian) with indie-pop and adds a lead trumpet to attain a fairly unique mix of styles. The band members hail from England, Sweden and Belgium. The set from this particular show focused primarily on the album material, and closed the set with an excellent verion of the early single “The Few Outsiders”.

We recorded this set in the same location and with the same equipment as the Antlers recording from the same night, but this set contains more audience chatter. With that caveat, enjoy!

This recording is now available for download in FLAC and MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].

Big Dipper April 25, 2008 Southpaw – Flac and MP3 Downloads

April 26, 2008
By

It should always be so easy to wipe out 20 years in a single night. On our way to see Big Dipper at Southpaw in Brooklyn, we read the 20th Anniversary issue of New York Press on the subway, and then entered the club to see an Homestead reunion of sorts, as Great Plains and Antietam performed strong solid sets. When Big Dipper took the stage, the band dispelled any doubts or fears of rust as they ripped through a 90-minute 21-song set that covered their entirely too-brief career.

Merge Records decision to compile the recorded output of this all-but-forgotten great late 80’s post-punk pop band is one of those record company decisions that makes you shake your head at its sheer brilliance. Merge was also responsible for prodding the band to reform for these concerts, and based upon the stunning success and clear musical inspiration exhibited last night, Big Dipper may become the 2008 version of Dinosaur Jr. or Mission of Burma, 80’s reunions turned-working-bands.

Merge Records is also primarily responsible for the existence of this recording. With their forward-looking and web-friendly approach, Merge representatives were extremely courteous to nyctaper, secured permission from the band, and gave us list access. As a result, we arrived early at the venue and set up in the ideal location at Southpaw — in the dead center of the rail area with a 30 foot direct line to the PA and above the crowd. This recording reflects that excellent position, and we are proud of its superior quality. Enjoy!

Antietam was also recorded and will be posted on nyctaper in the near future.

Marco Benevento January 10, 2008 Sullivan Hall – Flac sample

January 14, 2008
By

Marco Benevento has invited an interesting and varied roster of guest performers for his Thursday night January residency at Sullivan Hall. This past Thursday was the second installment and featured his standard partner Joe Russo (drums) in addition to Brad Barr from The Slip on guitar. The improvisation was top notch, and combined elements of prog, jazz, fusion and trance. The open ended nature of the sessions allow each artist to stretch out the limits of the space and be free of genres.

Sullivan Hall is the old Lion’s Den after a complete over-hall. The inside layout is quite similar, but the changes resulted in serious upgrades to the sound system and facilities. The venue is extremely friendly to tapers, and Marco Benevento permits open taping.

Unfortunately, I arrived fairly late at the venue, and the crowd was packed. As a result, I set up in a very busy location which became unworkable about 30 minutes after Benevento & Guests began their set. I recorded a segment of the first set and offer it as a sample of the magic produced this night. I will be returning on the 31st to record the closing night of the Benevento residency. The sound of this recording is outstanding (except for the massive crowd and its chatter). I expect the quality will be superior on the 31st, as well as a complete concert recording. Enjoy this sample as a preview of the excellent music available at these shows. See the last three!

Marco Benevento continues with unique guests each Thursday for the remainder of the month:
January 17: with Stanton Moore and Marc Friedman
January 24: with Billy Martin, Calvin Weston, and Skerik
January 31: with Reed Mathis and Andrew Barr

Scott Maher – June 19, 2007 Lossless Download

If you have not heard of Scott Maher, you soon will. Scott’s perfectly crafted pop songs are both melodic and lyrically strong. His debut album Cartoon Moon received rave reviews, and a groundswell of support is developing in his hometown of Dublin, in NYC, and in LA, where he performs in July. He is currently working on a second album, and has recorded 2 songs for a film to be released this Summer.

The recording captured below was done with Scott’s permission, from a microphone stand in front of the soundboard, with my Neumann microphones. The recording captures Scott with a full band, performing a tight set of representative material.
