By

taper-larger-e1414026230872

A new update just three weeks after the last one! Its a busy time for nyctaper with new shows being added every day it seems. One hint for our readers — be sure to pick up the Village Voice this Wednesday!

Below is the updated schedule. We expect to attend and record these events. However, circumstances will prevent some of these from being done, and others will be added in the meantime.

If you want nyctaper to record your band, a band you represent, a show you’re promoting, or even your favorite band in the world, get me on the list and make sure everyone who needs to approve of the recording gives permission. Also, remember I’m doing this all for free — the recordings, the post-production, the reviews, the links, etc. — so treat me fairly.

NYCTaper Top 10 Concerts of 2009

December 25, 2009

Today we present the annual NYCTaper Top 10 Concerts of the Year, a totally subjective list of the shows we saw in 2009 that we felt were the highest quality performances of the many we saw. I estimate that I attended approximately 120 shows this year, up quite a bit from last year.

1. Wilco: July 15, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium, Wappingers Falls NY
That NYCTaper’s concert of the year actually took place a couple of hours north of NYC should say something about this show. One of the world’s best bands on a wonderful summer evening in the country played over two and half hours of superb music. This is also one of the most popular downloads on the site this year.

2. Animal Collective: January 21, 2009 Bowery Ballroom NYC
The day after Merriweather Post Pavillion was released, AC performed an intimate show at one of NYC’s best venues. The sound and performance were quite amazing, and based on the number of downloads (more than 23,000) of this recording, I guess we did pretty well too.

3. The Antlers: December 15, 2009 Bowery Ballroom NYC
This was a very special night for the band and they delivered the performance of their lives (thus far), with absolutely breathtaking versions of the Hospice material. As the culmination of years of hopes and dreams and expectations, this night was perhaps the most rewarding experience of the year for nyctaper.

4. The Feelies: September 13, 2009 Southpaw Brooklyn
This Sunday night show was the third show of the Feelies three-show “tour” in support of the re-issues of their first two classic albums. On this night, after a lukewarm first set, the Feelies returned to the stage and delivered one of the most remarkable sets we saw all year — one that included an unprecedented five returns to the stage for the performance of ten encores.

5. The Mountain Goats: December 2, 2009 Bell House Brooklyn
On the final night of yet another highly successful tour, the Mountain Goats performed at the outstanding and intimate venue Bell House. John delivered the goods, too, with a ton of older material, a rare cover, and three returns to the stage for five encores.

6. Iron and Wine: May 19, 2009 Abrons Arts Center NYC
A solo Sam Beam show is a special event. A solo Sam show in a classic 100-seat capacity theatre on the Lower East Side is yet another. This night was special for all the right reasons — an intimate performance of fan-chosen material by an artist of unique gifts, including his better-than-the-original cover of the Flaming Lips “Waiting for Superman”.

7. The Rest: June 19, 2009 Monster Island Basement Brooklyn
The superb young Canadian band made its first trip to NYC and absolutely floored the entire crowd lucky enough to be in the basement that night. As they performed primarily material from the album of the year candidate Everyone All at Once, the musical proficiency and songwriting skills of this soon-to-be-huge band were breathtaking.

8. Steve Wynn and The Miracle Three: June 27, 2009 Bell House Brooklyn
On this special night, Steve took a look back twenty years and performed the classic Dream Syndicate album The Medicine Show from start to finish. The performance was remarkable for its energy and commitment. The band carried the energy into a raging encore set that was only completed due to a curfew.

9. The Decemberists: June 10, 2009 Radio City Music Hall NYC
It was not enough for the Decemberist to perform their excellent new album The Hazards of Love in its entirety at this show. The band then returned for a second set of career-spanning material before giving the crowd the truly wonderful gift of a dead-on cover of REM’s “Begin the Begin” with Peter Buck on guitar.

10. Natureboy: November 7, 2009 Union Pool Brooklyn
Sara Kermanshahi is a singer-songwriter of immense talents. I expect we’ll hear a lot from her in 2010. On this particular night, she shined with such intensity that we were literally moved to emotion — and in particular by her cover of Nico’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine”.

Coming soon, NYCTaper’s top five NYC venues of 2009 and our top ten individual live performances of 2009.

Conor Oberst: July 18, 2009 Dutchess County Stadium – Flac and MP3 Downloads

July 26, 2009
By

[photo courtesy of Kate Ehle – many more excellent shots here]

Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band opened for Wilco at Dutchess County Stadium last weekend and achieved an uncommon feat — the rapt attention of the majority of the crowd, which by the end of their set was “won over”. Its a difficult task to open for a band of such popularity and reverence, but Conor’s engaging stage presence and the outstanding play of the band members contributed to their success. The setlist consisted primarily of material from the band’s latest release Outer South and from Conor’s self-titled 2008 solo album, and was highlighted by the wild closing “I Don’t Want To Die (In the Hospital)”.

We recorded from the identical location and equipment as the Wilco recording, so that the quality is absolutely superb. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: July 13, 2009 Keyspan Park – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Ira and Company later joined Wilco on stage

Yo La Tengo has stayed fresh for over two decades by consistently keeping fans on their toes with the unpredictable. On Monday night, in an opening slot for 12,000 Wilco fans, one might have expected a fairly straightforward accessible set from YLT. Instead the band delivered an hour of fuzz and crackle anchored by the complete madness of the twenty minute closer “The Story of Yo La Tango”. While the set left casual listeners with raised eyebrows, those who listened closely were treated to an hour of what makes Yo La Tengo special. Also featured in the set were three songs from Popular Songs, the new album due in September.

We recorded from the same location as the Wilco recording, but the wind was heavier during this set. While there was also more chatter during the YLT opening, there were significantly fewer people in the venue so that the crowd din is also lower. Overall, this is certainly a fine recording although not of the quality of our several YLT Hannukah Maxwell’s recordings. Enjoy!

Blitzen Trapper: February 27, 2009 Bowery – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Without much fanfare, Portland’s Blitzen Trapper sold out consecutive nights in NYC on a weekend when there were a glut of shows for concertgoers to attend. On Friday at Bowery Ballroom, the band performed an energetic and tight ninety-minute set heavy on material from their universally acclaimed September 2008 release Furr. Blitzen Trapper exhibit a plethora of classic influences (Dylan, Neil Young, Wilco, etc), often contained in stop-on-a-dime precise changes within the same song, and Friday night’s excellent set was no exception.

We recorded this set from our standard location at the Bowery. Of particular note was the sound mix provided by the band’s sound technician. The combination of his talent and the superb sound system in this venue yielded an outstanding recording of this show. The crowd was quite rambunctious and chatty, but even that does not detract from this capture. Enjoy!

Blitzen Trapper’s show on Saturday at Music Hall was recorded by an nyctaper correspondent and will be posted within days.

Alela Diane’s opening set from the Bowery was recorded and will be posted next, as the artist has already granted permission.

Plants and Animals set from the Bowery was recorded and will be posted pending artist approval.

This Recording is now available for Download in FLAC and MP3 at Archive.org [HERE].
