Zoned Out: March 28, 2013 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Little is known to date about the Brooklyn band Zoned Out, though they have quietly been building a following around town. Featuring current and former members of La Otracina, Grateful Dead cover band Dead Tape, Titan, Polygamist and Mirror Queen, they serve up deep multi-part psych meditations grounded in the rock aesthetic. For this Union Pool show, the band played under the swirling light show of Planetary Projections, adding to the otherworldly vibe of the night. Expect to see a new album from these guys, as well as more Brooklyn dates, soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones from our usual position in the venue, along with an excellent soundboard feed from the house engineer, Patrick. The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

The Black Crowes: April 6, 2013 Terminal 5 – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Black Crowes have never been critical darlings. From the beginning of their career in 1989, they were pilloried as too self-consciously “retro” — warmed-over by-the-numbers ’70s rock, at best, coupled with a love of self-indulgent jamming that sent Right Thinking Rock Critics (even ones who work for Maxim) running for the hills.

But while critics were busy dissing the band as weak imitators, fans were having none of it, buying tons of albums, packing their shows, and sending their videos (remember those?) into non-stop rotation on MTV. Was it a case of critics being smart and the masses being dumb? That can be the case, sometimes — plenty of bands that suck have huge followings. Still, it’s hard — for me, at least — to hear Chris Robinson belting out “She Talks To Angels”, or hear the opening chords of “Thorn In My Pride” and not think that maybe the Crowes can be declared fully “classic rock” — without the quotation marks.

The love for the band was on display for two weekend nights of very, very sold out shows at Terminal 5 last week, as the Crowes returned to the stage after their second hiatus. For this show, there was barely an inch to move on any of the venue’s three floors as multiple generations of fans came out to watch the band turn T5 into a Saturday night rager. Compared to recent past tours, this set focused more on their first two and best albums, Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.   Having last seen the band myself quite a while ago, I didn’t know what to expect. By a couple minutes in to the opening number, “Twice As Hard”, I knew the intervening years — filled with strife between the frequently-feuding Robinson brothers, as well as musical up and downs — hadn’t taken the vitality of this band down a tick. The band delivered some of the highest-energy songs — “Hard To Handle”, “Feelin’ Alright” and “Remedy” among them — early, before settling in for an acoustic interlude (with “She Talks To Angels”, of course) that led into a full-on thirteen-minute “Thorn in My Pride”, which proved to be only the second-longest jam of the night after the band closed out the main set with a seventeen-minute “Wiser Time” filled with twists and turns. The show ended on a mellow note with a cover of Ry Cooder’s “Boomer’s Story” followed by thunderous applause — the kind earned by hard work, not critical acclaim.

Meat Puppets: April 4, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I last saw the Meat Puppets at Mercury Lounge four years ago, when I made this recording.  Four years later, the band has proven that fires cannot only be rekindled, they can be made made brighter. Now in the fourth decade of their career and on their second reunion as a band, the brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood have all the scars to prove what 30 years of rock n’ roll can do to a person and a unit. Rock n’ rollers are meant to die happy warriors. If they’ve lived how they’re supposed to live they make their memories early, then check out before their time with a ledger of music a mile deep. Maybe they were onto something when they titled their most commercially successful record Too High To Die, but the Kirkwoods haven’t bowed out or toned it down. They keep re-grouping, re-generating — so much so that Curt’s son Elmo is now the band’s rhythm guitarist.

After a shorter set the night before owing to being the “early show”, this “late show” set on Thursday at Mercury Lounge was a marathon that gave fans everything they could possibly want.  We got all of the Meat Puppets II classics that Kurt Cobain made famous (“Oh Me”, “Plateau”, with a searing guitar solo, and “Lake of Fire”), fiery versions of band classics (a nine-minute “Up On the Sun” and equally sick “I’m A Mindless Idiot”), covers (Beach Boys’ “Sloop John B”, Freddy Fender’s “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights”, the Texas Tornadoes’ “(Hey Baby) Que Paso” and Jimmy Driftwood’s “Tennessee Stud”), a taste of their forthcoming album, Rat Farm (the title track, “Time and Money” and “Original One”), plus two of their better-known Too High To Die numbers (typical set closer “Backwater” plus “Comin’ Down”). Among the new songs, “Original One” from Rat Farm was the live debut of that song. The band kept their feet on the gas for all of this nearly two-hour set, with minimal breaks between songs, and the brothers’ interplay between each other on stage seemed, to me, to be at an all-time high. The Puppets have always been capable of writing great songs, but haven’t always been what you’d call musically consistent. Tonight, we saw them at their absolute full potential — a band that can be both.

I recorded this set in our usual manner for the venue, with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a feed of the excellent house mix by the Meat Puppets’ touring FOH (please send his name if you have it) working with Mercury head FOH Kevin Mazzarelli.  The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Sky Picnic: March 28, 2013 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Sky Picnic is the psych-driven rock band fronted by guitarist/vocalist Chris Sherman and bassist Leah Cinnamon, who on this night were joined by drummer Russell Wahlquist, who did an admirable job filling in for band regular Pete Meriwether.  This Union Pool show was made extra memorable by the liquid light show of Planetary Projections, who coated what is usually a drably lit shade with intense swirls of color.  Sky Picnic play a more vocal-driven brand of psychedelic rock, as well as using tighter arrangements on certain songs in addition to the typical sprawling songs typical of the style. The result is a slightly more pop-driven sound with songs that have more individual character than those of some of their contemporaries. This set consisted mostly of songs from their Paint Me A Dream LP, plus a longer, older number called “Universal Mind Decoder”.  Paint Me A Dream is still available in limited quantities on vinyl from the band’s bandcamp page, plus download options.  Sky Picnic plan to have some more local gigs in the coming months, so check back at their facebook page for updates.

ACME String Quartet: March 20, 2013 Society for Ethical Culture – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

One of the missions of the Wordless Music Series is to help bring classical and contemporary music together by pairing rock and electronic artists with more conventionally classical  acts.  On this night at the Society for Ethical Culture, the ACME String Quartet joined Low (that recording here) for an incredible evening of music that began with a set of ACME performing a series of contemporary string pieces.  The group is well-known for avoiding the typical cloistered classical environments that are the province of their peers (they play Le Poisson Rouge with some frequency), nor do they hem themselves in to one genre, movement or style.  On this night, for example, the group performed two pieces by the modern American composer Ingram Marshall, followed by a piece from English composer Gavin Bryars involving a repeating blues vocal loop.  The set closed with “White Man Sleeps”, a fast-paced number by the post-minimalist South African composer Kevin Volans.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones from the third row in the audience, in the center. As with the Low recording, there is a bit of analog hiss in the mix, which was reduced in post-production.  Enjoy!

The Habit: March 26, 2013 Knitting Factory – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Habit are members of the new cohort of bands seeking to re-examine the possibilities of traditional American rock music.  With one record under their belt (Lincoln Has Won) and another coming very soon, this show at the Knitting Factory gave them a chance to debut their new stuff in front of an appreciative crowd. While Brooklyn may not seem like the obvious hometown for an act whose sound leans heavily on traditional country as well as American rock, The Habit tacitly acknowledge their Northeastern present with some punked-up arrangements that give a nod to Yankee bands like the Dropkick Murphys. The result is a live show that serves up both high energy and high variety, with dual vocalists Brian Mendes and Siobhan Glennon giving them range for both heartfelt country ballads and honky-tonked-up punk. The band, founded by Mendes and guitarist Willie Croxton, arose out of their mutual respect for the original folk recordings of famous archivist Alan Lomax, followed by later influences like Alan Parsons and Jimmie Rogers.  They have done an excellent job of respecting those influences while creating their own personality — and most importantly, a fun live show — at the same time.

Low: March 20, 2013 Society For Ethical Culture – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Seeing Low inside a non-denominational church (the Society For Ethical Culture, a favorite spot of the Wordless Music Series) seems appropriate. The by-now-legendary Duluth, MN band, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has a sound that demands reverence. This audience of superfans gave it to the band, too, as the church stayed as pin-drop quiet during the mellowest parts of the band’s catalog as it filled with applause after every number. I was blown away by the Low show I saw at Bowery Ballroom two years ago, and this show may have bettered that one.  The band played the bulk of their current Sub Pop release, The Invisible Way, but delved into some rarities, too, such as “I Hear… Goodnight” from their In the Fishtank EP with The Dirty Three.  While the current record is a less full-on rock affair than 2011’s, C’Mon, it is still a comparatively noisy outing for the band who gave birth to the “slowcore” genre. Some of the noisier new songs were among the night’s best, particularly Alan Sparhawk’s squalling guitar freakout during “On My Own”.  The band was joined for the final quarter of the set by the night’s opener, the ACME String Quartet, and the added strings gave added depth to Low’s spare arrangements. The ACME players seemed as honored and gratified to be sharing the stage with Low as we were to be sharing the evening with all of them. During a pause in their playing during “So Blue”, I noticed one of the ACME players gently nodding, a huge smile on her face. The smile just about said it all.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones at head height from the third row, center, in the audience.  That position, while great for watching a show, is not ideal for recording, especially as the PA stacks were placed outside the edges of the stage. Further, the large variations in volume mean that quiet portions of the program were especially quiet, which introduced some hiss from the analog signal chain.  I have done considerable editing to this recording to tame the hiss and raise the vocals and overall sound levels without ruining the dynamics of the band’s sound. After a lot of work, I am pleased with the results, even if it falls a little short of my usual standards. Enjoy!

Alexandra Stewart: March 15, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

While thousands of young artists chose to ply their wares in the marketing-drenched trenches of Austin last Friday, Alexandra Stewart played her first full-band show at Glasslands.  There were no junk food ads or cell-phone chattering PR flacks on hand, no distractions or status-obsessed bullshit. People were there to celebrate music, rather than exploit it. Stewart has a brand-new, well-produced record (Wàbà) to preview.  She chose to do it here, in a place that feels like home, in front of people who actually cared.  In some ways, an artist’s choices can matter as much as their art.

As for her performance, Stewart and the band (Chris Pattishall on keys, Austin Vaughn on drums, Jack Hill on bass and Russ Flynn on guitar) evinced none of the first-show jitters that derail early shows, starting this eight-song set as strongly as they finished it.  The focused, effortless groove Stewart lays down with her vocals reminded me at points of artists like Feist and Laetitia Sadier, and her full-band arrangements gave those vocals a lush, engaging backdrop.  Wàbà is named for the little village in Ontario, Canada where Stewart grew up, and her hometown and country figure prominently in her style. If you look at the Pinterest page where she assembled inspirational images for the record, several are the kind of wintry, grey-washed photos one might associate with our colder, less populated neighbor land to the north. But the images aren’t bleak; they can inspire hope, or pensive reflection. Stewart’s music is much the same, drawing on darkness and light.  Her songs can range from the playful-sounding pop of “Pow Wow” (whose subject matter is shade darker than the song’s sound) to the somber “Graveyard”, which starts with a spare vocals and keys arrangement until it crests on waves of guitar.  On this night, these and other songs arrived fully formed, delivered with an understated grace and poise that is hard to come by for a first show. Stewart will continue playing more live shows through the year as she looks for a home for the record, and I suspect that if she and the band continue to perform at this level, she will find some takers.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones placed directly in front of the band to capture the sense of being up front, combined with an excellent soundboard feed of the house mix by engineer Josh Thiel.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Ultimate Vag is a group of avant-garde rockers whose core consists of Scott Verrastro of psych-improv outfit Kohoutek and co-conspirator Chris Grier.  For this Union Pool show last November, they were joined by Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, and the Don Fleming of the Velvet Monkeys, Gumball and several other bands. The foursome closed out an incredible night that also featured Suzuki Junzo (recording), Eidetic Seeing (recording) and Rhyton (recording) with a sprawling improvisational take on The Walker Brothers’ “The Electrician” from their final (and bizarrely proggy) record, Nite Flights.  The band took that six-minute song and transformed it into a miasma of abstract noise that alludes to the oddly influential role of this song from a mostly-forgotten album. Launching into the number almost totally unrehearsed gave the players broad latitude to take things where the moment suggested they go, and the resulting output is a once-in-a-lifetime musical moment that we are thrilled to have captured for you.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones from our usual  spot in the venue, plus an excellent soundboard by house engineer Doug.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Parquet Courts: March 7, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The transition from headlining act at DIY Brooklyn shows to opener at the Bowery Ballroom can be a rocky one for some indie bands. Where a scrappy aesthetic plays well when there’s a mosh pit going and you’re closing out a long night to a partying crowd, it sometimes works less well when you’re playing a half-empty Bowery to people who came to see someone else.

Happily, that was not the case for Parquet Courts, despite being the opener on a three-act bill that included fellow Brooklynites Nude Beach and The Men. In fact, if you looked down at the full floor at the start of their set, you could be forgiven for confusing Parquet Courts for the headliner.  The band’s performance more than held up their end of the bargain, with the energy of songs from their debut album, Light Up Gold carrying over just as brilliantly as they did at the band’s raging 285 Kent show that we saw last November. Lest you think Parquet Courts are some lo-fi band that can’t play, be advised that there’s some legitimate guitar shredding going on along with the New Wave-ish rhythm guitar parts, which gives added heft to songs like “Yr No Stoner” and gives the band room to grow their sound in the future.  The band let us know that they were going to be staying up all night this night, as they were flying to Mexico City the following day, followed by ToddP’s Festival Nrmal and SXSW after that.  I hope their audiences to the south have as much fun with them as we did here in NYC.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from longtime Bowery engineer Kenny.  The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!
