William Tyler: October 18, 2012 Merge Records CMJ Show, Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After catching two solo sets, and several other appearances at Hopscotch Festival back in September, I’ve seen a lot of the Nashville guitar prodigy and Lambchop member William Tyler lately. Luckily, Willy T always has something new to share with his fans – be it songs, stories or both – and in this case, he came to the Merge Records CMJ Showcase at Mercury Lounge armed with new songs from his forthcoming 2013 record on Merge (his first for the label)  as well as some hilarious new tales from his life. Although he’s a young guy, Tyler has the easy, mannered onstage presence of someone who’s been doing this for decades, and it’s hard for audiences not to be won over by his charm. Dig, for example, is story of the inspiration drawn from the 70s film Heaven’s Gate as he introduces “Country of Illusion”, or his tale of his first job at TCBY (that’s The Country’s Best Yogurt, for those from non-TCBY parts of the country). Along with new songs such as “We Can’t Go Home Again” and “Country of Illusion” that are slated to be included on the new record, Tyler shared “A Portrait of Sarah”, available only on a 2011 split 7″ with Alistair Galbraith, as well as live staples like “Impossible Truth” and the set closer “Tears and Saints”. While Tyler is adept on both acoustic and electric, this set’s acoustic numbers, particularly “A Portrait of Sarah”, seemed to come across best of all.

As I barely had arrived at the venue in time to catch Willy T’s set, and did not have my mics ready yet, this recording is a straight soundboard feed from an excellent house mix by Mercury’s head engineer Kevin Mazzarelli.  Given that it is a solo guitar performance, pretty much nothing was lost from not having the mics, and Mercury’s high-end board sounded as good as ever for this show. Purling Hiss: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its always an encouraging story when talent, hard work and persistence are rewarded. We have been big fans of Purling Hiss for a couple of years, and we have been convinced since we first saw them in early 2011 at Bowery Ballroom that Mike Polizze’s band was ultimately going to reach a large audience. Mike is an extraordinarily talented guitarist and the band’s ferocious performing style fits with the aggressive garage-punk songs. At Music Hall of Williamsburg last week, we learned before the show that Purling Hiss has signed to the excellent label Drag City Records. We expect a new album to appear in March. At Music Hall some of the newer songs were performed, and while the songcraft remains strong, there is definitely a more melodic tint to the material. Purling Hiss wasted no time in their thirty-five minute opening set and immediately got down to business, transitioning each song into the next. We’re streaming old favorite “Almost Washed My Hair” which was both the finale and the band’s chance to stretch out and shred.

Acidjack and I recorded this set with a combination of four room mics, his Schoeps hyper-cards and my Sennheiser cards and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound is superb. Enjoy!

The Loom: September 4, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

If you read this site regularly, it should be pretty clear by now that we just can’t say enough good things about the Brooklyn band The Loom, who we’ve been fans of for four years now. We continue to watch this band grow, develop and change, evolving and tweaking their sound and taking their music in new directions. What has not changed over those four years is the high quality of this band’s live shows, or their kindness and generosity as performers. This year has found the Loom completing a touring cycle for their first LP, 2011’s Teeth, and charting a course toward finishing their second album, which should be out next year. While the shift is subtle, the band is seeing some evolution in their sound as they approach the new record. Where the Teeth-era material would easily locate the band in the “acoustic indie folk” realm, the band’s newest songs show the influence of some of the heavier bands they have been playing shows with, like The Phantom Family Halo. While The Loom have hardly given themselves over to psych rock, songs like the new “Fire Makes” are drenched in heavier guitar riffs than we have seen from them before. “Morning Song, Mountain Song”, which we first heard back in December, is a more high-octane version of the band’s style from Teeth and “The Reading Room”, perhaps my favorite new track, falls somewhere between the two. Hearing the new material at Glasslands – possibly my personal favorite Brooklyn venue, and also one where new music and new musical directions flourish – seemed appropriate. As long as The Loom continue to put out this kind of effort, they will always be a favorite of ours.

I recorded this set with Naiant X-X microphones split on stage, combined with a soundboard feed from the Glasslands engineer Josh Thiel. The sound is outstanding, even by the standards of our other recordings of this band.  Enjoy!

Futurebirds: October 27, 2012 Irving Plaza – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Futurebirds continue to broaden their audience and appeal, as the Athens, GA band refines their live sound and, of course, books opening slots with well-loved acts like the Heartless Bastards. When I caught them last year at Union Pool, the venue and the atmosphere gave the proceedings a more boozy, party-band vibe. That isn’t necessarily untrue of this Irving Plaza set – it was Halloween weekend, the band was the only one of the night’s acts to roll in with Halloween costumes, and the crowd was drinking plenty – but the bigger stage and sound system gave the band a more commanding presence. Here, their music had a bit more of an epic scope, so much so that they reminded me of a pedal steel-playing, more countrified version of fellow Southerners My Morning Jacket. The band, whose last record is a live album that documents the strength of their live sound, is using these Heartless Bastards shows to work out new material, and three of those as-yet-unnamed tunes were on offer on this night. Together with regular tour classics like their cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart” and “Johnny Utah”, this show reaffirmed my view that we’ll be seeing more of Futurebirds in the years to come.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones from the center of the floor. Despite the challenges of the boomy room, with some TLC the recording is quite good. Enjoy!

The L.A. band He’s My Brother She’s My Sister have multiple personalities: Their twang suggests country, their style suggests retro, the natural bounce to their songs suggests a touch of swing. You cannot fairly call them any of these things, but once it’s all happening on stage, it makes sense – and it’s a fun, theatrical affair to boot.  This pre-Sandy, pre-Halloween weekend show at the Knitting Factory seems like it was a long time ago now, but it otherwise would have been the perfect way for its crowd to enter the big weekend.  He’s My Brother She’s My Sister (which does include siblings Robert and Rachel Kolar) is a millennial party band through and through, and if you couldn’t get that from the upbeat first chorus of “How’M I Gonna Get Back Home”, their costumes probably gave it away. Their fan base – drawn heavily from those millennials – seemed to know them well, and they did their part by partying their asses off through the full hour. And they should have – in just over one hour, this band gave us a veritable tour of some of the best music of the last fifty years, from the dancefloor ready honky tonk of “Let’s Go” to the 60s rock of “Escape Tonight” and the combo of bluesy guitars and Broadway exuberance of “Touch the Lightning”. The band has just released its debut full length record, Nobody Dances In this Town, and while no recorded music could fully bottle the lightning of the band’s live show, it comes pretty damn close. Appropriate to the Halloween spirit, the set ended with the band’s signature number “Tales That I Tell”, made all the more festive by the band inviting scores of costumed, dancing audience members onstage with them.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the Knit’s great engineer, Rob, as well as new MBHO cardiod microphones. While a malfunction in the microphone bodies results in some odd-sounding distortion during the applause between tracks at points, the sound of the recording is overall excellent, and does not have this flaw during the music itself. Enjoy!

Woods: November 3, 2012 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After a week without power, internet, regular food, and just about any semblance of normal life, it was extraordinarily comforting on Saturday to get back to something familiar — a show. This wasn’t just any event though, but prolific nyctaper-recordees Woods at Music Hall of Williamsburg. It also helped that the support bands included two other NYCTaper favorites, Widowspeak and Purling Hiss. We’ve recorded Woods for five years, and there are more than a dozen recordings on this site. Its a testament to the band that we keep coming back and find new things to enjoy about their music. In May at 285 Kent, we noted that longtime drummer Jarvis Taveniere had come out from behind the kit and played most of the set on guitar. As we learned speaking to Jarvis before the show, that change is now permanent. With a new drummer, Woods is now also apparently a quartet as original member tape-loop/effects player G. Lucas Crane was absent from this gig. But it was the addition of Jarvis’s guitar work, which included several different axes including a neat 12-string, that ignited the guitar interplay within the band. The main focus of the set was precise back and forth between Jarvis, Jeremy and bassist Kevin Morby, who anchored center stage. The show began with a segue of three folk numbers before the band got a chance to stretch out and jam a little with new album title track and longtime jam vehicle “Bend Beyond”. The guitar trio seemed to be having fun on stage and their enjoyable interplay culminated in the highlight of the night an intense 15-minute “I Was Gone” that we are also streaming below. Its these types of performance that will keep us coming back, as this band continues to evolve into one of the best live acts around.

Acidjack and I recorded this set from the center and back of the soundboard booth mixing the Sennheisers with an excellent feed. The result is a superb capture. Enjoy!

Mac McCaughan: October 18, 2012 Merge Records CMJ Showcase, Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Merge Records co-founder and Superchunk and Portastatic frontman Mac McCaughan has more than earned his beloved status in the indie rock community. His contributions to the Chapel Hill and Durham, NC music scenes, and music in general, could have taken two lifetimes, and his confessional, direct songwriting continues to resonate and remain fresh more than two decades into his music career. As for Merge, the label has been one of those remarkable and rare successes in music, remaining staunchly independent and committed to promoting quality releases – and finally earning a Grammy for its current mega-artist, Arcade Fire. So, after we wrapped up our own CMJ showcase down the street at Cake Shop, the NYCTaper crew headed over to Mercury Lounge where McCaughan joined William Tyler, Mount Moriah, Reigning Sound, Eleanor Friedberger and Telekinesis for Merge’s CMJ Showcase.

McCaughan performed as a solo act, an uncommon treat to see in the New York area. As usual, this set combined new and old Superchunk songs with Portastatic classics like “Autumn Got Dark.”  The set also included a brand new number that McCaughan said should appear on a Superchunk release next year, which we are streaming below. Though the singer-songwriter format lacked some of the punch of a normal Superchunk gig, it gave McCaughan’s lyrics and voice the spotlight. McCaughan’s exuberant, earnest delivery still comes across like that of a brash, young artist, and the themes of his writing continue to prove their timelessness. On a night that in many ways celebrated McCaughan’s success, this set was another one.

Oneida: September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Our friends in Oneida were a late but welcome addition to the “Megafaun and Friends” day show at Hopscotch Music Festival, and as usual, nobody knew what to expect in terms of the setlist. Joined by a number of special guests throughout the set (including the ubiquitous man-of-the-festival, the drummer Chris Corsano), Oneida filled the streets of downtown Raleigh, NC with their complex improvisational post-rock. For this show, we were treated to a rendition of the band’s LP Preteen Weaponry, which this site also recorded a live performance of back in June of last year. As we eagerly await their next album, A List of the Burning Mountains, out on November 13, this just-over-half-hour set of another of the band’s classic albums whetted our appetites for what they have in store for us in just under two weeks.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s hardworking sound team, plus Schoeps MK5 omnidirectional microphones. The sound is excellent, after some initial adjustments to the board mix. Enjoy!

As Hurricane Sandy’s damage continues to be assessed here on the East Coast, it seems grimly appropriate to highlight the CMJ performance of an outstanding New Orleans-based band that represents that city’s history as well as its brightening future. Hurray For the Riff Raff have been favorites of this site for a while now, and we did everything we could – including picking them up from the airport – to make it possible for them to play our unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, just hours after they got off a plane from Germany. If this minimalist version of the band – lead singer and guitarist Alynda Lee Segarra and guitarist Sam Doores, plus special guest Matt Davidson of Spirit Family Reunion on fiddle – was worn out from traveling, they didn’t show it during this acoustic set. In fact, Alynda, Sam and Matt looked to be having a hell of a lot of fun as they played stripped-down versions of new songs, older songs, and a choice cover of the Ronettes classic, “Be My Baby”. After seeing a fantastic performance from the band back in August, it was a special treat to be able to see them again so soon. While the band has returned to New Orleans to enjoy some much-needed time to de-compress, we’ll be happy to welcome them back as soon as they are ready.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s engineer Justin, plus Schoeps MK5 microphones mounted at the front of the stage. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Modern Inventors: October 7, 2012 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Philadelphia duo Modern Inventors led off this final Backyard Brunch Session of the season with a set of classic, tightly-arranged rock. The band for this event was a combination of old and new: Modern Inventors guitarist Matt Kass was previously in the well-known Philadelphia band The Brakes, and he was joined for this show by two of his former bandmates, Zach Djanikian (Ukelele bass) and Spence Cohen (drums/percussion). Seeing the band for the first time, I wouldn’t have guessed that they didn’t always play in this configuration – these four players clearly found their groove quickly. Modern Inventors vocalist/guitarist Josh Benus, who met Kass when Kass produced an album for him in 2007, comes across as vocally effortless and beyond his years. The band is preparing an album, Trains and Aeroplanes, for December release, and spending their time until then playing the material live at shows on the East Coast, with a tour planned following the record’s release that may well include Djanikian and Cohen in the touring unit. We are streaming the band’s debut single, “Hello” below, which was, unsurprisingly, one of the strongest of the seven songs from this set.

I recorded this set with AKG 414 large diaphragm microphones in the Blumlein configuration, which provides a rich “360 degree” soundstage, with additional reinforcement on Benus’ lead vocals. This is one of my favorite of all of my Backyard Brunch recordings.  Enjoy!
