sunn O))): September 8, 2012 Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

It makes sense that sunn O))) are named after Sunn amps, because the many Sunn amps onstage with them get a punishing workout during their sets. Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium proved to be one of the most challenging rooms for bands at this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival; its size and cavernous design threatened to swallow the sound of several of the acts who played there. But for the doom metal pioneers and their slow, hypnotic wall of sound, the mid-sized auditorium was child’s play. As they prefer it, sunn O))) took the stage shrouded in a wall of smoke, the silhouettes of the black robed players barely visible. sunn O))) doesn’t need to give you much to see, though, as their music communicates on a more visceral level – that is, by rattling your guts with their bass-driven, low-tuned guitars and periodic paganistic chants. For this set, there was no percussion involved, and for the uninitiated, there were no obvious discernible songs – again, as the masters prefer it. A sunn O))) show is not so much as a “concert” as a holistic experience, as if you’ve joined the band in a dark ritual that will give them, for an hour and a half or so, your undivided attention and near-catatonic rapture. A scan of tweets during the show revealed a mixture of awe and fear among the show’s participants; sunn O))) is not for the faint of heart. The Hopscotch Festival was meant to reflect the impeccable and unique musical tastes of its co-founders, and I think it’s safe to say that co-founder Grayson Currin‘s predilection for “heaviest music” was satisfied by having sunn O))) close out the third successful run of this festival.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in the optimal location in the venue. This is an outstanding recording and perhaps my favorite quality-wise of the entire festival. Enjoy!

Altos: September 4, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

Milwaukee’s Altos (formerly/sometimes known as Group of the Altos) are a tough band to fit comfortably on most stages. With twelve members, and a variety of strings, keys, upright bass, trumpets, guitars percussion and more, the band’s sound is anything but stripped down. Sonically, they belong alongside fellow big bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor! with their commitment to melodies and stretched-out song structures that eschew pop convention. But unlike their fellow-travelers from up north, Altos’ sound is a bit more folk-inflected (think Broken Social Scene) and considerably less apocalyptic. This 40-minute set at Glasslands, a warmup to an upcoming gig at Hopscotch Festival in North Carolina, consisted of a total of four songs, including three longer-form compositions and the tighter, more vocal-driven “Race” (streaming below).   The band deploys the large crew of players wisely, creating songs that are sonically dense, yet cohesive and spacious.

As with many bands arising from the Milwaukee scene right now, Altos have a Bon Iver connection, too – their eponymous current record was recorded at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio, and is available on vinyl and digital here (with an album cover that is, appropriately enough, composed of headshots of each of the 12 band members).

I recorded this set with new Naiant X-X omnidirectional microphones at the lip of the Glasslands stage, together with a soundboard feed provided by the head engineer Josh. The sound quality is truly outstanding. Enjoy!

William Tyler: September 6 and 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival (2 performances!) – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

The Nashville-based guitarist William Tyler was everywhere during this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival. Much like improviser-in-residence Chris Corsano, festivalgoers might see Tyler pop onstage with any number of bands – and we saw his join several, including Megafaun and Hiss Golden Messenger, as well as his own Lambchop. But folks also know Tyler as a solo artist of some renown, especially after his 2010 full length, Behold the Spirit.  Tyler’s playing runs the gamut of influences, from American-style finger picking to Indian ragas, and any given show of his is likely to wow even the most seasoned veteran of the instrument.

I first saw Tyler last year at Glasslands,  and was excited to catch two additional sets at Hopscotch down in Raleigh, NC. The first, an intimate performance on a tiny upstairs stage of the Raleigh restaurant and bar Busy Bee, was a mostly-different setlist than the 2011 show we saw, and included the new song “Oahspe” from Tyler’s 2012 seven-inch release. Any chance to witness Tyler’s virtuosity on his instrument is a can’t-miss, so I was thrilled that my friend Cory Rayborn had managed to book Tyler as part of his Three Lobed Recordings/WXDU Day Show the following day at the Raleigh venue King’s Barcade. That shorter set reprised “Oahspe” plus “Crystal Palace, Sea of Glass”, “Tears and Saints” and “Impossible Truth”. Tyler was clearly among friends at the day show, which was full with like-minded musicians from various corners of the avant-Americana galaxy and beyond. I would not be surprised to find Tyler himself as a future “improviser in residence” given what we saw here.

I recorded the Busy Bee set with a very simple stereo recorder placed in front of Tyler onstage, and the Three Lobed/WXDU show with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the omnidirectional setting onstage, plus a soundboard feed provided by the outstanding engineers at King’s.  Both are excellent renditions of their respective performances. MMOSS: August 6, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

We first checked in with the Dover, NH psych rockers MMOSS back in May, when they opened for Woods at 285 Kent. This show at the somewhat more “formal” Knitting Factory in Brooklyn gave the band an opportunity to wow Brooklyn audiences with a significantly more capable sound system, and the results show in this recording. As with the May show, the band played a five song set that ended with the mammoth “War Sux”, though this set swapped in their April single release, “Spoiled Sun”, which became another of our favorites immediately. With the addition of flute to the mix of organs and guitars, MMOSS has a distinctly retro vibe that puts them in good company with many 60s forebears, and their album i is, as we noted before, a collection of instant classics. “War Sux” was even more extended this night than at the last show, giving the band a chance to show off their jamming chops.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Knit’s engineer, Rob. The sound is excellent.  Enjoy!

Hiss Golden Messenger: September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

It’s a fitting coincidence that as the third annual Hopscotch Music Festival took place in venues across downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, the Democratic Party gathered for its annual convention in Charlotte a few hours south to officially re-nominate the nation’s first black President. People unfamiliar with North Carolina have a habit of lumping it in with places that have little to do with it; witness the epithets thrown at the state following the passage of the state’s anti-gay marriage amendment. Like every state in this Union (including New York, where gay marriage didn’t exactly pass by overwhelming margins), North Carolina is a complicated jumble of old and new, and the negative things I saw people saying on social media and elsewhere didn’t square with the place I lived in eleven years ago. What I saw during this past weekend bested my highest expectations for the area’s future; more than ever, the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area (the “Triangle”, as it’s known) is a place of big, positive things. Hopscotch – of, by and for the vibrant music scene of the Triangle – in many ways is a microcosm of modern North Carolina. And if one single artist could encapsulate all that was good about Hopscotch, I would submit that it’s the Durham, NC based songwriter MC Taylor, aka Hiss Golden Messenger.

Taylor took the Fletcher Opera Theater stage in the dark, the room so quiet we could hear his footsteps.

“Hey now, brother, don’t you know the road?” he called out, voice as sweet as that tea they like to drink down here.

And as they walked on, his current bandmates responded back: “Yes, my brother, I know”.

The classic blues call-and-response builds for a few minutes, as Taylor’s fellow players (an all-star cast consisting of, among others, the Nashville guitarist William Tyler and Phil and Brad Cook of Megafaun) take the stage behind him.

“I was no good and I was all alone,” Taylor sings, that sweetness rent with heartbreak.

“Yes, my brother, I know”.

The verses of “Brother, Do You Know the Road” continue until they build to an extended instrumental bridge, Tyler wailing a mournful line on his Telecaster, and ending, as it began, with that call-and-response. And that’s only the first few minutes of an hour-long set so beautiful it brought me to tears a couple of times. Taylor’s voice is spine-tingling good, with the songs to match.

This show never slowed from those first verses of “Brother”, as the band – who had never played together as a complete unit before this show – jelled into a formidable seven-piece that added a wealth of new texture to Taylor’s compositions. Along with “Brother,” Taylor played the as-yet unreleased “Red Rose Nantahala”, a bluegrass-tinged number in which Nathaniel Bowles’ (of the Black Twig Pickers) banjo lead melded with Tyler’s electric guitar. “Jesus Shot Me In the Head” was treated to a meditative, extended intro that accentuated its psychedelic leanings. Rather than a new band, this one sounded like a group of longtime collaborators; it couldn’t hurt that many of them are friends, and some had played on Taylor’s latest record, Poor Moon.  But really, even with a crack band, the centerpiece of Hiss Golden Messenger is always Taylor and his voice, and this intimate theater proved to be the perfect venue to showcase Taylor’s abilities. The band closed with “Super Blue (Two Days Clean)”, a rocking song about an addict’s welcome of a relapse. Charley Patton might have found a lot to like in Taylor’s lyrics, and he’d probably have been jealous of the quality of the players behind it.

Despite a much-deserved spate of recent positive press, Taylor still doesn’t play out much other than in North Carolina, where his legend is spreading. He has released a few records, including the hard-to-find Bad Debt LP of roughshod motel blues, the pop-veering Country Hai East Cotton, and the aforementioned current masterpiece, Poor MoonPoor Moon, consisting partly of filled-out versions of the Bad Debt material, saw limited release on North Carolina’s Paradise of Bachelors imprint in 2011 before being re-released more widely by the Tompkins Square label (and re-pressed by Paradise of Bachelors) in 2012. Drenched in the blues, gospel, bluegrass and Appalachian folk, Poor Moon is an almost flawless work of songwriting in which Taylor melds those classic styles into a new form that is distinctly his. A lecturer on folklore, it is no surprise that Taylor is an expert on this area’s rich past.

This was my favorite by far, but this set from Taylor is one of many, many magical moments at this year’s Hopscotch. Co-founders Grayson Currin (a Pitchfork contributor) and Greg Lowenhagen and their team have created something truly special down in North Carolina. At this rate, it won’t be long before the Triangle is joining or even replacing the Austins of the world near the top of the U.S. musical conversation. Brother, now you know.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones from the center of the balcony. Due to a battery failure, the last few minutes of the last song are patched from an inferior backup source, but other than this small flaw, the recording is excellent. Enjoy!

Magic Trick: August 16, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

As avowed fans of The Fresh & Onlys, we were thrilled to get a chance to see their frontman Tim Cohen’s bedroom project, Magic Trick, come to life as a full band for a set at Mercury Lounge. While Cohen’s lo-fi solo efforts have their charms, the songs feel more fully-realized with a real band, outshining even the latest official release, Ruler of the Night. Cohen and the band took a rapidly-filling room through many of Ruler’s new numbers, as well as a few from his older catalog (all of which can be heard on his bandcamp page). Compared to the Onlys, Cohen’s Magic Trick material is a bit more subdued and has less over psychedelic overtones; these songs veer much closer to confessional singer-songwriting than Nuggets-era jams. What hasn’t changed is Cohen’s knack for hooks and compelling songwriting. “Same People” is one of those songs that will stick in your head for days, while “Weird Memory” has a similar appeal to Real Estate’s blissfully diffident stylings. The Onlys have a tour and new record on the way shortly, but Magic Trick deserves a look on its own.

Jennifer Castle: August 1, 2012 Union Pool – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

You may not have heard of Canadian singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle, who has a new album, Castlemusic, out on Flemish Eye Records in Canada and re-released by our own No Quarter, as well as two other titles out under the band name “Castlemusic”. But even if you haven’t heard of her, chances are, if you’re a fan of Canadian indie music, you’ve heard her. That is because Castle has collaborated with several high profile Canadian bands and artists, including Fucked Up, Constantines, and Doug Paisley. On her own, Castle writes intricate, compelling songs, with a lovely voice that easily stands on its own. This show at Union Pool, opening for Family Band, gave Castle a chance to perform some of her new material solo, and she made the most of it. Several of the Castlemusic songs, like “Powers” were standouts, along with a few that were (I think) new.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Family Band recording, with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed.  This recording, which consists of only vocals and guitar, therefore favors the board feed, and the sound is excellent, although there are a couple instances of the vocal mic overpeaking during the first song. Enjoy!

Sonny and the Sunsets: August 16, 2012 Mercury Lounge – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

Sonny & the Sunsets don’t make it entirely clear whether they want you to take them seriously. In the “yes” column you’ve got frontman Sonny Smith’s lifelong musicanhood and decade-long history of releasing records, many of which are of estimable quality. Smith’s latest, the aptly-titled Longtime Companion, arrives on 180-gram yellow vinyl and sounds like a well-worn LP you’ve had in your collection for years. An instant old friend, of sorts.

But then, you have to take into account a freewheeling show like their recent visit to Mercury Lounge, where a Smith, calling himself “El Borracho” (“the drunkard”), played a loose, at-times shambling set that offered up antics and anecdotes aplenty. Sonny comes off like a damaged Dylan, married to equal parts Robert Earl Keen and Todd Snider.  Country-rootsy on acid and Jameson, Sonny seemed thrilled to spend a significant chunk of the playing in the crowd, looking at his bemused band members onstage. Smith covered material from the three Sunsets albums, including the standouts “Dried Blood”, “My Mind Messed Up” and “Too Young To Burn”. Smith plays with the fearlessness of someone whose musical career hasn’t always gone easy; much like his music itself, he is raw and compelling. After about an hour of the band’s regular set, Sonny decided to take things into stranger territory, including a lengthy beat-esque piece about aliens. The set closed out with “Love Among Social Animals” and “Planet of Women”. Sonny may have his tongue planted firmly in cheek at times, but that’s ultimately part of his charm. As with his much-talked-about art piece “100 Records” where Sonny made, yes, 100 45s paired with various images, he is willing to take risks, and more often than not, they succeed.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a flawless soundboard feed from Kevin, the club’s head engineer.  The sound is excellent, though you will notice the emphasis on the soundboard increasing toward the end as the crowd gets chattier (read: more drunk).  Enjoy!

Los Lobos: July 11, 2012 Brooklyn Bowl – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming Songs

Any performer worth their salt would love to be in a band like Los Lobos.  While their rendition of “La Bamba” may have put them on the map (and the version by which all others are measured, in my humble opinion; sorry, Ritchie Valens), their stellar output through a nearly 40 year career has kept them there.  These guys have a level of musicianship that most players can only dream of and would kill for.  Los Lobos are capable of playing nearly anything and many respected artists have cited them as their favorite group to jam with.  That’s why it was no surprise that during Tom Waits‘ recent, and exceedingly rare, late-night television appearances guitarist/vocalist David Hidalgo was part of his band.  An American institution very proud of their Mexican/SoCal roots, they began this show by playing acoustic Tejano that, over several songs, subtly transformed and transitioned into electric rock.  It was pretty spectacular to behold and they made it appear so effortless.  When they pulled Jolie Holland on stage for a gorgeous duet and opener Livingston Leo for a few cuts, it sounded and felt like they had all been playing together for years.  Over the course of the night, they played some brilliant covers and tracks off many of their discs including a healthy dose from ‘Kiko‘, not only one of their best albums but arguably some of the finest music ever recorded.  I am repeatedly amazed every time I get the opportunity to catch these guys and if you have a bucket list of bands you must see, Los Lobos should be at or near the top.

acidjack and I recorded this concert with sets of Schoeps MK22’s and Milab VM-44 Links.  The microphones complimented each other beautifully and we were able to make an excellent capture.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

K-Holes: August 6, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

For fans of 60s psych and garage rock, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Brooklyn band more compelling than K-Holes. This band’s style is no prettified nostalgia trip. As their name implies, K-Holes’ energy comes from a dark place; a song where they scream the refrain “We are rats!” ain’t exactly to be featured on the next Strokes record. The New York of the K-Holes is the grittier world of the early 80s, and their sound reflects it. As one of many bands that grew up around the dearly departed Monster Island, one of many gentrification victims of the last few years around here, they’ve gotten to live a little bit of it, too.

Besides the contrast in tone, this band also presents a different look and appeal than many of their peers. First, the band is a mixed-gender crew that consists of singer-guitarist Jack Hines, singer Vashti Windish, Hines’ wife Julie (whose uber-cool bass playing is perhaps the best visual in the band’s live show), drummer Cameron Michel and saxophonist Zumi Rosow. The male and female lead vocals, and Rosow’s sax flourishes, give the bands’ songs added depth and texture – and they also look a bit more exotic than, say, a trio of scruffy dudes.  But ultimately, it’s the songs that get a band noticed, and K-Holes have got a ton of good ones, spread across their latest record on Hardly Art, Dismania, and their eponymous first album. “Child”, which leads off Dismania and closed this Knitting Factory set, is one of those clarion call-style tracks that demands to be turned up to 11, and the live version was a standout. “Rats” and “Numb” (streaming below along with “Child”) were two more Dismania tracks that absolutely killed. But no need to take my word for it; K-Holes will be on the bill at the epic Ty Segall / Thee Oh Sees Show at The Wick/The Well on September 22, and after that they’ll be in Europe for all of our friends on the continent. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss them.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from Rob, the engineer at the Knitting Factory, and Schoeps MK5 microphones. Of my three recordings from this night (along with Night Beats), this is probably my favorite.  Enjoy!
