Gov’t Mule: June 2, 2012 Mountain Jam – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

If you’re a doubter of “jamband festivals”, this Gov’t Mule performance from Mountain Jam alone might make you reconsider. Three of us from the NYCTaper crew came out for Saturday of this year’s Mountain Jam, held at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in Hunter, NY, and the Mule was that day’s main attraction for a number of reasons. The fact that they are a legendary live band was only part of the picture this time; this particular performance also honored the late, great Levon Helm with a set that found the Mule joining the Levon Helm Band for a tribute that no doubt would have found favor with the man. On a misty night against a verdant Catskills backdrop, Mule and guitarist Warren Haynes gave a life-affirming performance that could turn the coldest cynic on to the power of music. Mountains are often used as a metaphor for the obstacles that define human struggle. This night’s music – played against those gorgeous peaks – demonstrated music’s power to transcend even death. As a series of well-known players joined the band onstage for songs from Mule, Helm and history, we were reminded note after note how lucky we are: to be listening, to be here, to be alive. For us – and I guess it’s fair to call us “city people” – this night was a reminder of the grandeur that lies beyond our steel and glass borders. Mule gave us everything they had until the mist had soaked us all. But most importantly, they gave us a chance to give thanks to those who were gone as well as those who were there with us.

Each of the three of us who were at the show recorded this set, and below we are offering two sources: First, hi and lo’s recording with Schoeps MK21s, and second, Johnny Fried Chicken Boy’s Audio Technica cardiods paired with my AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics, set to “wide cardiod mode.” Both recordings stand out in their own way and offer different “flavors” to enjoy.

The Phantom Family Halo: April 30, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After catching them back in January on the cusp of the release of their latest record, When I Fall Out, back in January, I relished the chance to catch The Phantom Family Halo after a few more months of touring on the record. Opening for the legendary Japanese psych-rock band Acid Mothers Temple (that recording [HERE]), the band took the Knitting Factory stage with a poise and confidence equal to that veteran band. The combination of a cool light show and a clean house mix gave a fervent power and energy to the most-new material on offer. “Vital Energy” was not only the name of one of the best songs of the night; it was an accurate descriptor for the band’s entire performance that night. As I did back in January, I continued to marvel at how the band could switch gears between a more psychedelic, exploratory style and a harder, punkish bite, even within the same song. Much of the credit for that goes to frontman Dominic Cipolla, whose vocals are angrier and more aggressive, and kept higher in the mix, than those of many of the band’s genre contemporaries, giving them a harder edge. This show was a step forward all around from the January show, and makes for the ideal introduction to this band. The only thing better would be seeing them for yourself.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Acid Mothers Temple recording, with AKG large diaphragm microphones. I preferred the house mix and the mics’ performance on this set over the AMT set, and think that this was the best recording of the night.  Enjoy!

Acid Mothers Temple: April 30, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Acid Mothers Temple (well, the full name of this ensemble being Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O.) blew my mind the first time I saw them, back in 2010, and they did so again on this night at the Knitting Factory.  With two new studio albums under their belt from 2011, the band came out and delivered a mind-melting 104 minute performance that showed off the new tracks. Unconfined by the strictures of expectation or conventional song structure, each of this night’s songs was a study in improvisation. Rather than the wonky soloing that often typifies improvisational bands, the Mothers took their journey as a tight and focused unit, obviously cueing off of each other. This show had more vocal-heavy songs than the previous show, which gave some of the songs a more cohesive feel despite their even-more-extended jamming. As was the case even before its release, the instant-classic “Pink Lady Lemonade” with its Zeppelinesque main riff was the crowd favorite.  The show ended with the wallop of “Chinese Flying Saucer”, one of the tighter songs in the set, as the band continued to rock furiously, right until the last guitar hit the floor.

I recorded this set with AKG large-diaphragm cardiod microphones and a naturally “warm” handbuilt preamp, plus an excellent soundboard feed provided by the Knitting Factory FOH Devin. In retrospect, the choice of microphone and preamp was not ideal, as this combination is better suited to the fine detail of acoustic and less-bassy shows. Nonetheless, with a bit of editing, the resulting capture is excellent.  Further, please let me know of any tracking errors – I think I did better than last time, but there may still be mistakes in song names.  For convenient listening and breaking up into CDs, I broke up long improvisational pieces into multiple parts in order to make them a bit easier to navigate.

Brooklyn’s own Phantom Family Halo opened this show, and that recording will be posted soon.

Lucero: April 20, 2012 Webster Hall & October 17, 2009 Webster Hall – FLAC & MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

April 29, 2012
By

[Photos by acidjack and Johnny Fried Chicken Boy]

There are two main paths that bands take to success these days: There are the bands with instant buzz, who find themselves on the late night TV circuit and playing large venues instantly. (They tend to flame out quickly, too). Then there are the bands who earn it the hard way – playing 200-plus shows a year, gigging every goddamn festival and radio station and bar in every corner of the country, putting thousands of miles on a broke down van and doubly more miles on their livers and sanity, all for the love of music, sure, but also for a shot at success.

Success, for a rock band these days, is a bit redefined, but Lucero have achieved it, and they’ve achieved it the hard way. An unabashedly masculine band, whose hardscrabble tales ring with authenticity, Lucero sometimes seems to be of another era. It’s hard to argue otherwise about a band that titles their current release (their eighth record, but first on ATO Records) Women and Work. After all, for the early 21st century American man, work is something he hasn’t got, and women – well, they’re too busy doing all the work.

But that’s the beauty of Lucero – they remind you of better days, but they also remind you of the simple pleasures of the days you’re in. The boys themselves always look like they’re having fun. Frontman Ben Nichols’ most frequently-uttered phrase between songs is “hell yeah!”, and the band made quick work of a handle of Jameson onstage. Lucero’s music, even when tackling sadder subjects, has good cheer to go with its honest grit. Today we are presenting two recordings  from Webster Hall – the first from October of 2009, the second from April 20 (yes, that date) of this year. These two shows are perhaps more telling in their similarities than in their differences; the band may have continued to expand their sound and personnel, but the core of their music is consistent and strong. Maybe there’s a bit more gravel in Nichols’ pipes, but that doesn’t hurt a thing. And despite spending virtually the entire past decade on the road, they sound as fresh and hungry as ever. For example, with its early curfew, Webster Hall practically demands short sets – but Lucero played a two-hour set of nearly 30 songs. Nobody told these guys about lowering expectations.

The songs – well, there are those to talk about too. That word “honest” comes up again, when you think about a Memphis band whose sound pays homage to the country and blues and even R&B that fuel the town, but with a bit of a punk flavor thrown in. At the 4/20 show, the new songs were a blast; it’s hard to argue with the rocker “I Can’t Stand To Leave You” or the honky-tonk “Like Lightning”. A stripped-down group of personnel played “The War”, the World War II tale that could easily resonate with soldiers in Afghanistan and elsewhere today. And of course, Lucero played the favorites that the band is probably expected to play at every show, and why not? “Nights Like These” is one of those songs you never get tired of; same for the valedictory “Last Night In Town”.

Of the October 2009 show, JFCB said:

Lucero made quite the impression on me when I first saw them in early 2009. After the release of the excellent ‘1372 Overton Park’ album later that year, they embarked on a tour with fellow Memphis musician Amy LaVere and blues/rock duo Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm. Billed as the “Ramblin’ Roadshow and Memphis Revue”, it was also the first time the group ever toured with a horn section to mirror the sounds on their recent disc. Being on the road with this handpicked crew must’ve had a positive influence as both the band and the particularly boisterous crowd on this Saturday night seemed to have a great time. While drinking and fielding song requests, Lucero played the majority of ‘Overton Park’ and dug out a number of older nuggets that had the party whooping and hollering for more.

We can keep spilling words about them, but really, all you need to know about Lucero is contained in their sendoff to us at the 4/20 show: “We appreciate each and every one of y’all making dreams come true. Dreams do come true!” A lot of things about rock music have changed in the fourteen years of Lucero’s career; a lot of dreams have changed, many for the worst. We’re pleased to raise a glass to these guys realizing theirs – they deserve it.

I recorded the 4/20 show with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in a wider NOS configuration from directly behind the soundboard in order to give the recording a spacious, open sound. Johnny Fried Chicken boy recorded the October 2009 show with AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics that are always great-sounding, but especially for this band. If this is your first time reading about Lucero, you might check out his recording of the band from Mercury Lounge last year first – it’s an instant classic. Enjoy these recordings, and support Lucero!

Thanks to Lucero and their management for their accommodating treatment of us at this show and many others.

AU: March 29, 2012 Cameo Gallery – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

AU is not so much a “band” as a single man’s vision – that of one Luke Wyland, currently of Portland, OR and previously of Boston. Wyland performs under this moniker in a variety of configurations – with everything from an orchestra to his current setup of just him and drummer Dana Valatka. While AU earns comparisons to bands like Panda Bear and Animal Collective, Wyland’s vision is more playful than those contemporaries. His songs give off what a fellow show-goer described as almost a “carnival” vibe at times; they are bombastic, exuberant, and downright fun no matter what your frame of mind.

This show at Cameo Gallery found AU headlining to celebrate the release of Both Lights, the band’s new album that was release today on the quirky and flawlessly curated Hometapes. a label that plays home to several of this site’s current favorites. AU rewarded a packed house with a set that began with “Ida Walked Away” from the band’s record Versions, followed by the steel drum-dominated “rr Vs. D” from Verbs before transitioning to all-new material from Both Lights that wowed the crowd.  That set-within-a-set began with the relentless and appropriately-titled “Get Alive” and transitioned into the more anthemic “OJ”. This short set could barely contain all of Wyland’s disparate ideas, but it was rewarding to see him wind up with two more extended numbers “Go Slow” and his first single from Both Lights, “Solid Gold”. If this crowd was worn out from a four-band bill that ran a bit late, it didn’t show. It would have been hard to exhaust AU’s endless fountain of ideas with a set twice this long.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Howth set, with AKG large-diaphragm microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from the Cameo FOH.  The results are also outstanding.  Enjoy!

Howth: March 29, 2012 Cameo Gallery – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

[Photos courtesy of Jonny Leather and Mecca Lecca Recording Co.]

Our friend and longtime music blogger Jonny Leather has managed to achieve a dream that few music fans do – creating his own label, Mecca Lecca Recording Co., to release the music of the bands he loves. In a fairly short period of time, he has built up a strong roster of acts like Unicycle Loves You (a favorite of this site), Christopher Paul Stelling, and Ghastly City Sleep, among others.  But my favorite of all of them, and a band I had been wanting to see ever since I bought their first record on bandcamp, is Howth.  This recent show at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn showcased the young band at the top of their game as they shared material from their forthcoming album (and Kickstarter success story) Newkirk.

The band’s bio styles their sound as “psychedelic folk”, but their rich, texturally varied sound belies that simple label.  In addition to their folk influences, I heard elements of the epic sweep of The Antlers in some of their songs like the set closer “Keep Me Away From the Mirror”; the off-kilter rock of Radiohead and Modest Mouse in a few others; and even a few moments when the vocal harmonies reminded me of doo-wop and 60s pop. Howth is a versatile, dynamic act that clearly has a lot of gas left in the tank musically, and has already shown a lot of growth over just two releases. That said, there is no denying some of the earlier songs like “Idaho #1”.  My favorite song of the set was probably “Only Right Turns” from Newkirk – the song has compelling guitar work, soaring vocals and a healthy dose of the loud/soft dynamic that a fan like me who grew up in the 90s is permanently addicted to. Even better, Jesse Newkirk of Steel Phantoms gave this version an extra-special touch.  Howth will release Newkirk on May 1st, followed by a record release show at Mercury Lounge.  I’d recommend putting both on your calendar.

I recorded this set with AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics that were specifically selected to accentuate the detail in Howth’s rich sound, and a soundboard feed from the Cameo staff. This outstanding recording should serve as a worthy introduction to the band and their latest material.  Enjoy!

Special thanks to Howth, Jonny Leather and Mecca Lecca for inviting us to record the show, and my apologies for it taking me this long to actually see the band!

New Multitudes: March 14, 2012 Webster Hall – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

[Photos courtesy of Joe Papeo.  See more of his excellent work at irocktheshot.com.]

It’s my understanding that the seeds for the New Multitudes project were first sown as far back as 1995 when alternative-country godfather Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) was tapped to collaborate with Billy Bragg on what would eventually become the ‘Mermaid Avenue‘ album.  After Jay declined, Bragg wound up recruiting Wilco and released two discs of previously unheard lyrics by folk singer Woody Guthrie put to music written by the performers.  Fast forward several more years and Farrar approached the idea again, bringing together a veritable Americana/alt-country supergroup to write music for lyrics that Guthrie wrote during his years in Los Angeles.  Adding Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline) and Yim Yames (a.k.a. Jim James of My Morning Jacket), each artist imparts distinct aspects of their styles to the songs but, as a collective whole, they also blend incredibly well together.

With such a roster of talented musicians, I was very excited to see this concert at its stop in New York.  Out of the gate, the group did a straight run-through of the songs off the album, with barely any time for applause between them.  However, rather than being a carbon copy of the disc, the live renditions imbued much more detail and fully realized the interplay and spot-on harmonizing between the members.  It quickly became evident that a few weeks on the road had honed the material beautifully.  It also showcased their versatility, particularly as Will and Anders did a round robin between drums, guitars and vocals.  The next part of the show had each member taking an impressive solo acoustic turn.  Finally, it was everybody back on stage contributing to each other’s songs and finishing off the night with one of Woody Guthrie’s own compositions, each performer trading off on vocals.  After such an amazing evening, it’s a shame that this tour had only a handful of dates.  After New Multitudes’ next and last planned outing at the Newport Folk Festival in July, I certainly hope they can find the time for another pass through.

Being set up right behind the soundboard and dead center, the always wonderful sounding Webster Hall once again didn’t disappoint us.  Aside from the drums being a bit upfront during the first song, the house mix was excellent and our recording is a very good reflection of that.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Cowboy Junkies: March 10, 2012 Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

I was in college when the landmark ‘The Trinity Session‘ album by Cowboy Junkies was released.  Garnering attention with their unique cover of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane”, I think it’s safe to say that every guy on my dorm floor developed a crush on frontwoman Margo Timmins.  Rather than rest on the laurels of that critically lauded disc, this stellar band has continually put out terrific music over the past few decades, bucking trends and cultivating a distinct style on their own terms.  Their most recent project, the excellent Nomad Series, continues in that ambitious vein with them having recorded 4 separate albums in 18 months.

This particular night was the last stop on the tour and Cowboy Junkies seemed intent on making it a memorable one [check out guitarist Michael Timmins’ entry from his tour diary HERE].  In the lovely Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center the capacity crowd was treated to two sets of music.  With the first being tracks from the Nomad Series and the second consisting of material spanning the group’s career, there were amazing performances in each capped with an intense rendition of (fellow Canadian) Neil Young’s “Don’t Let It Bring You Down”.  Overall, an outstanding evening.

Thanks to the very helpful and accommodating crew and venue staff, we were able to set up in a nearly ideal location in this wonderful sounding room.  We were also blessed with incredibly polite and appreciative attendees.  It was truly a pleasure to sit comfortably in a beautiful theater on a Saturday night and not have the music compete with people who would rather talk loudly than enjoy the songs.  Combine all these factors and our resultant recording is superb.  Enjoy!

Special thanks to Cowboy Junkies, Candace Horgan and Jared Herman for making this recording possible, and to Frank, Eric, Greg and the staff at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center for their courtesy and cooperation.

Fantasmas: February 1, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Fantasmas are the Brooklyn-based brainchild of Kam Tambini, who along with Austin Formica (guitar), Avi Bajpai (drums) and Adam Glaser (bass/vox) craft aggressive post-punk that adds a melodic element to their distortion-soaked sound.  Tambini hails from Peru, so the band’s set at Glasslands opening for Grandfather appropriately kicked off with a Spanish-language track, “La Maga” before drilling the inspired “Dead Days”, that gave me fond memories of many mid- to late-80s U.S. and British post-punkers.  The band also did an inspired cover of Thurston Moore’s “Hang Out” that left no doubt where their allegiances lay.  Fantasmas have a 7″ available on bandcamp for now, but be on the lookout for their future releases and shows in the area.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Grandfather recording, but had a bit more to work with in terms of the board feed.  The results are excellent.  Enjoy!

Backwords: February 8, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Backwords, of Brooklyn, are one of those bands that manages to sound classic and completely new at the same time.   Some of their tunes fall solidly in the gentler folk camp; at other times they can get psychedelic and jammy.  This opening set at Glasslands showed off both sides, with their approachable, melodic material, mostly from their current record By the Neck, predominating.  The band maintained an upbeat, easygoing vibe for the crowd of friends and fans that showed up early to catch their set.  I was partial to “Last One”, which drew more from the band’s ’60s pop-folk influences.  They closed on an especially strong note, with the jammy “Way Around” that gave them a chance to show off their chops on guitar and bass.  The band’s next shows will be down south, but be on the lookout for them when they next play New York.

Thanks to Jeff Kilgour and Tijuana Gift Shop for inviting us to the show.

I recorded this set with AKG large-diaphragm mics that melded well with the band’s classic sound.  The vocals are occasionally a tad high in the house mix for my taste, but overall it is an excellent representation of the night.  Enjoy!
