Wizard Rifle: September 11, 2015 Pour House, Raleigh, NC (Hopscotch Music Festival)

Though Wizard Rifle has been on my radar for a little while now, it took a trip down to Raleigh for me to finally catch this Brooklyn-by-way-of-Portland duo. Their sound is hard to pin down, but fits in somewhere between progressive metal and Sabbath-y sludge. This set from Hopscotch drew a packed crowd to the Pour House for a heavy bill that also featured Tombs and Old Man Gloom—which is to say that Wizard Rifle were in good company. Three out of four of these songs—”Megatherium,” “Tears Won’t Soften Steel,” and “Leathery Gentlemen”—are off the first Wizard Rifle record, Speak Loud Say Nothing. The fourth, “Psychodynamo,” is off of last year’s Here in the Deadlights. If you haven’t heard either record, I encourage you to do so immediately because both are killer. Seeing them live finally only proves their chops are for real and I’m anticipating catching them again soon on their—and my—home turf. Dig in!

I recorded this set with the mics mounted near the soundboard plus a feed from the Pour House’s FOH Jack. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Greg Fox + Jefre Cantu-Ledesma: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WKNC/WXYC Hopscotch Day Show

October 15, 2015
By

Greg Fox + Jefre Cantu-Ledesma

While of course we missed Three Lobed’s annual Hopscotch day show at Kings, those big shoes were filled by an epic day show team-up of three local university radio stations: Duke’s WXDU, NC State Raleigh’s WKNC, and UNC Chapel Hill’s WXYC. The show spanned two clubs, Kings upstairs and Neptunes down. And while a noon start in Neptunes’ darkness with a lineup of four noise acts could be brutal for a hungover crowd, the event wall well-attendended among the Hopscotch faithful. Today’s recording brings together Greg Fox (GDFX, Guardian Alien, Liturgy) on drums and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (founder of seminal noise label Root Strata) on electronics. Fox pummels the drums like only he can while Cantu-Ledesma works the noise blasts on equipment that I won’t even pretend to grasp. It’s a short twenty-minute performance, one you’ll no doubt have on repeat for a while.

I recorded this set with the room mics clamped to the ceiling combined with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Merely a few days ago, if you had asked me to write a book report on the electric phin you would have gotten a blank stare. Turns out it’s an oddly-shaped, three-stringed Laotian lute and sounds pretty much like you’d imagine a Laotian lute would. My newfound knowledge is courtesy of Wikipedia and local psych-jazzers Sunwatchers, for whom the phin is only one aspect of their ambitious instrumentation. Besides the core of guitar-bass-drums the band also incorporates the alto sax and vibraphone. Combine all that together and you’ve got some pretty unique sounds. Fans of the instrumental and rhythmic experimentation of bands like Rhyton and Horse Lords should look no further for their new favorite up-and-coming Brooklyn band.

Sunwatchers are hot off recording their first LP, which is due out on Castle Face Records later this year, and sounds pretty damn great. The band has been playing together for a couple years now but Sunday marked their first show since the recording sessions. They put together an excellent showcase upstairs at St. Paul’s Church in South Williamsburg, drawing a sizeable and eager crowd for a sweaty Sunday night. But all left satisfied, and were rewarded for their diligence with an intimate, blistering set full of songs off the forthcoming LP.

I recorded this set from the stage lip where the mics picked up the bass, drums, guitar, and phin, while a feed from the mixer supplied most of the saxophone and vibraphone. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

75 Dollar Bill: June 28, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

75 Dollar Bill

75 Dollar Bill is quickly becoming a staple in New York’s rich improvised and experimental music scene. They’ve got one proper LP, Wooden Bag (out on Other Music Recording Co.), and a few self-released tapes to their name, but it’s their live performances that are creating a splash that even the New York Times is picking up on. Though they’ve been known to incorporate other musicians in their live shows, 75 Dollar Bill proper is a duo, with Che Chen on guitar and Rick Brown on homemade percussion and horns. While that description may give you the notion that the band trades in minimalism, the rich textures of Chen’s guitar played through a small practice amp combined in complex rhythms with Brown’s improvised and homemade percussion will set you straight. This set from Trans-Pecos, opening for the equally mighty Bill Orcutt and Tom Carter, finds the duo exploring some material off their first release, the simply titled cassette (“Every Last Coffee or Tea” and “Water in the Lock”),  along with a shorter improvisation and a finale of “I Was Real,” which doesn’t appear to have yet seen release. Though the technique to the music is intricate, it’s not fussy in the least bit—what’s clear is that Chen and Brown are having infectious fun and it’s sure to rub off on you.

I recorded this set with the AKGs at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Catch 75 Dollar Bill later this month at this can’t-miss show also featuring Eleventh Dream Day and Antietam at Mercury Lounge, August 21. Tickets on sale.

Tom Carter: June 28, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Stream

Tom Carter

The last time we caught up with Tom Carter, he was playing as a duo with Barry Weisblat at the small South Slope bar, Freddy’s. That was a particularly out set that I’m still trying to wrap my head around, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when Carter took the stage a couple weeks ago at Trans-Pecos, heading a bill that featured guitar savant Bill Orcutt (his set here) and the percussion/guitar duo 75 Dollar Bill. Carter’s improvised set is a spacey, thirty-eight minute guitar journey of three to four distinct but linked movements punctuated by quiet, meditative transitions. Carter is a master of this craft and I highly recommend turning up the volume and letting yourself go with this one.

I recorded this set with the AKGs at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The sound and performance are entirely in the zone. Enjoy!

Catch Tom Carter tomorrow night in a duo with Pat Murano at Trans-Pecos! Facebook event here.

I would also be remiss not to mention some new music from Tom Carter coming soon via Three Lobed: the solo double-LP, Long Time Underground. Preorder details should be available soon.

Bill Orcutt: June 28, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Bill Orcutt

Bill Orcutt is unlike any guitarist I’ve ever heard. He manages to conjure something primal out of the instrument that defies any normal comprehension of music. It’s at once grating and beautiful and each time I see him play, I’m simply awestruck. I most recently caught Orcutt last week playing a Sunday night set at Trans-Pecos along with Tom Carter and 75 Dollar Bill. The first track I’ve left untitled, though it likely picks up on motifs and phrasing from recorded songs. The second is Orcutt’s rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” (thanks to @boxwalla for that). The third track is, as Orcutt calls it, a “cluster” of three songs you may know well but not like he plays them. My best guesses for those are all from his 2013 Editions Mego LP, A History of Every One: interpretations of “Black Betty,” “White Christmas,” and “Solidarity Forever” (though it’s entirely possible I’m wrong on each count).

I recorded this set with the AKGs at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The mix leans mostly on the board feed as the guitar was miked directly. The guitar is loud and clear; the overall sound and performance are excellent.  Enjoy!

Bill Orcutt has a couple of upcoming releases. First is a collaboration with drummer Jacob Felix Heule called Colonial Donuts. It’s out October 16 on Orcutt’s own Palilalia Records. Second is a collaboration with Alan Bishop and Chris Corsano, recorded live by our very own acidjack and due out soon on Three Lobed Recordings’ Parallelogram Box Set.

Robert Millis: April 10, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

June 12, 2015
By

Robert Millis

Robert Millis may be best-known as a founding member of the long-running, experimental Climax Golden Twins and for his work with Sublime Frequencies, as a compiler and obsessive hunter of long-forgotten 78s from around the globe. At least, that was my familiarity with him prior to his set at Union Pool a couple months back, opening for friend and fellow seeker of the obscure, Sir Richard Bishop (his set posted here). Here, in solo mode, Millis’ set is true to the multivalence of his musical pursuits. It’s a combination of folk, spoken word, improvisation, drone, and noise. Something for everyone here: acoustic and electric guitar narratives “Notes on a Scandal” and “Pretty Polly”; the guitar drone piece, “The Demise of the Progressive Lens Routine” (referring to some earlier banter); and the haunting set closer, “Sign of Judgement.”

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony and a board feed from Union Pool FOH, Leah. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Obnox: May 15, 2015 Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Obnox
[Photo by Jason House, I’m Just Here For the Bands]

Last year’s Louder Space wasn’t so much a breakthrough album for Obnox as it was a perfect distillation of Lamont Bim Thomas’ prolific garage-punk/hip-hop outfit. If the juxtaposition of those two genres gives you pause, fear not: Thomas is equally comfortable whether he’s doing an MC5-inspired cover of Neil Young’s “Ohio” or namechecking Mary J. Blige. He’s followed up Louder Space this year with the excellent Boogalou Reed (on 12XU) and the just-released Know America (on Ever/Never Records), an airwaves-takeover-style concept record. And in case I didn’t sufficiently highlight the word “prolific,” he’s got another record coming Ever/Never later this year. Even with this wealth of new material, last week’s Obnox set from Cake Shop (currently celebrating their ten-year anniversary) is packed with hits from the deepest reaches of their discography: “How to Rob (The Punk Years),” “Molecule,” “Mecca Son Shine,” and “Red I” from Louder Space; “Dough” and the title track from the “Smoke Woody Haze” EP; “Being Cleveland” from the double LP Corrupt Free Enterprise. The newer tracks are “Loudpack” and “Grease” from Know America, and “Watching You” from Boogalou Reed. Meanwhile, “Carmen, I Love You” is out digitally but a vinyl issue seems imminent. Some technical troubles prevented Thomas from playing guitar for the bulk of the set, but what’s missed in his distorted guitar work is more than made up for by his on-point vocal delivery and best-in-the-business stage banter.

I recorded this set with a pair of AKGs set up at the stage lip and a pair of Church Audio cards positioned to pick up the monitors. Very special thanks to Cake Shop’s engineer Jeff, who made this recording possible by helping me out with a loaner stand. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

B Boys

Hey there, b boys and b girls. Today, we’ve got a fresh recording of a local Brooklyn trio, B Boys. These guys mine the rich territory of late ’70s post-punk acts like Wire and the Buzzcocks mixed with a more modern garage-y sound. You may have caught them playing out recently at Silent Barn or one of the final shows at Death By Audio last November. They’re in the studio right now recording their first album, but meanwhile they’re also sharing a studio version of “Other Head” on their Bandcamp page. We caught up with B Boys opening up for Tyvek at Silent Barn last month and were surprised at how catchy these tunes are. Their short, to-the-point set will no doubt leave you wanting more, but only after you’ve had the poppy “I Don’t Mind” and the aggro “Psycho” on repeat for a while, not to mention the weird, bendy “Other Head.”

I recorded this set with the AKGs in front of the board combined with a feed from Silent Barn’s Yaman Palak. The sound is as raw as punk rock should be. Enjoy!

Elisa Ambrogio: April 30, 2015 Baby’s All Right and January 31, 2015 Silent Barn – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Elisa Ambrogio
[Baby’s All Right photos by Jamie Langley]

If you somehow missed out on Elisa Ambrogio’s sleeper-hit solo record, The Immoralist, last year, it’s time to rectify that. Besides the standout single “Superstitious” garnering a Best Tracks of 2014 slot from Pitchfork, the entire album is superb front-to-back. And fear not Magik Markers fans, Ambrogio’s signature guitar work is all over this record. It’s a quieter album that you might have expected from the Markers front-woman, but also one any fan of that band will find satisfying. The songwriting will feel familiar but for this solo record the subject matter is more personal and the vocals are upfront so that you can hear every word. If you got in on the two records from the tragically under appreciated 200 Years (the duo of Ambrogio with Six Organs of Admittance mastermind Ben Chasny), you’ll have a good idea what to expect from her solo outing.

I’ve been lucky enough to catch Elisa Ambrogio’s solo tour twice this year, each time with different supporting musicians and each lending a slightly different perspective to the songs. Back in January, she stopped by Silent Barn on the tail end of a tour with banjo-player and multi-instrumentalist Nathan Bowles on drums (his set posted here). Then, on the second leg of a tour with Six Organs of Admittance this past week at Baby’s All Right, Ambrogio played a few solo songs followed by some full band songs with Ben Chasny on guitar and drummer Adam Payne (also of Residual Echoes). Ambrogio and Chasny even dust off one of their 200 Years tunes, “West Hartford.” Perhaps due to the late hour or the DIY venue, the Silent Barn set is the looser of the two, with Ambrogio coming nearly unhinged in her solo finale of “Kylie.” In contrast, the Baby’s set is slightly more polished, with Chasny’s subtle guitar work adding some interesting texture to the songs, particularly on “Far From Home.”

The Silent Barn set was recorded with the AKGs set up in front of the soundboard combined with a board feed. There’s a little more ambient crowd noise on this one (particularly the first minute or two of “Comers”), but Ambrogio’s powerful songs soon quell the crowd and the set is quite enjoyable. The Baby’s All Right set was recorded by FOH Harrison Fore, combining the house mics with a stereo board feed. The respectful and attentive crowd is reflected in the clarity of the recording. Overall, the two sets present varying but complementary takes on Ambrogio’s live sets. I think you’ll enjoy them!

Elisa Ambrogio is still on tour with Six Organs of Admittance. Check the dates here.
