Lake Mary: October 21, 2016 The Schoolhouse

Lake Mary, aka Chaz Prymek, of Denver, hasn’t been as much a regular in our personal orbit as his East Coast-based peers, but this relatively rare treat of a show made up for it. This show at the Schoolhouse, a low-key, living-room style DIY venue in Bushwick, provided the perfect intimate setting for Prymek’s talents. The fingerstyle guitarist played a total of four compositions, including an as-yet-unnamed new number. The opener of “Everything the Light Touched,” with Prymek accompanied on accordion, proved the perfect, ethereal kickoff to a night that also included performances by Dylan Golden Aycock and Bridget St. John (those recordings coming soon). Prymek’s style has a welcoming, unforced quality to it that suggests that he is more interested in communicating the emotions in his music than his ability to play guitar. It’s the type of experience that sticks with you, even if it’s your first time seeing him; he leaves a warmth behind. So if you find Lake Mary in your town, make sure to make the trip to see him.

Chuck Johnson Band: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

Chuck Johnson has been on this site numerous times, most recently for his work supporting Blood Moon Boulder last year at Union Pool. With his newest album, Velvet Arc, Johnson decided to go with a full band, which is a departure from his recent solo guitar work, but not an overall catalog that stretches back to various NC-based bands (Shark Quest, Idyll Swords, etc.). What emerges on the record is a bottom-heavy, bluesier strain of tunes that makes you long to see them live.

This very special performance at King’s in Raleigh, North Carolina, one of ten separate sets in honor of the sixteenth anniversary of Three Lobed Recordings, was a rare, one-off appearance of Johnson performing these songs (plus “Florets,” from Johnson’s soundtrack work) with a full band. Rather than the West Coast-based band that recorded Velvet Arc, Johnson collaborated with longtime NC compatriots, including Mike Gangloff and Nathan Bowles (of Pelt and numerous other projects), Bob Wall, and Nathan Golub. Johnson describes the set as “loose” in his intro, but that may be a bit of modesty, as these longtime players gelled from the get-go on “Florets” before delving into Velvet Arc‘s leadoff track, “As I Stand Counting.” You may have heard Chuck Johnson before, but you’ve never heard him quite like this. With the full complement of musicians on fiddle and additional guitars, we were able to hear Velvet Arc’s various turns at American experimentalism as they were meant to be played.

Johnson noted, toward the end of the set, that Raleigh was where he was born, and the day and night’s entire slate of performances, culled from artists who have been all over the Three Lobed roster during the past 16 years, felt like a homecoming, with the out-of-towners joining and re-joining locals who have touched their lives over the decades. Three Lobed is responsible for some of Johnson’s finest releases, including Crows In the Basilica, plus earlier CDs of Idyll Swords, and this set (like many during the event) acted as both a bit of a thank-you as well as a taste of what’s yet to come on this small label whose influence has always outstripped its low-key style.

I recorded this set with the benefit of a full 8 tracks, including audience microphones, onstage microphones, and several feeds of onstage instruments, courtesy of King’s engineer Brad. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker: January 13, 2015 Baby’s All Right

Ryley Walker will be a breakout star this year, and the reason won’t just be his forthcoming album, Primrose Green. Walker has been touring hard, working out the new material, and consistently wowing audiences. BrooklynVegan brought him to New York for a Red Bull Sound Select event at Baby’s All Right, and we couldn’t have been happier, having seen Walker last in a similar two-man configuration back in October at Rough Trade.

Once Primrose Green hits shelves, those versions of Walker’s songs might well seem polite by comparison. The title track’s single, available on Soundcloud and on other streaming services, is a fine version, but pales when up against Walker’s fierce version on this night, a ten-minute ramble through his mind featuring an elongated intro and a virtuosic guitar playing that mimicked some of the dissociative elements of the alcoholic beverage for which the song is titled. But if I had to pick from among Walker’s post-All Kinds of You material, I think it’s “Summer Dress” that will go down as his signature song, as it begins with its loping guitar line under a vocal turn in which Walker yelps, deploys falsetto, flirts with chaos. Watching Walker, you get the sense that he’s not even trying to play these songs to please you, but he does anyway. There’s a sense of abandon to his work that can’t help but grab you; he’s feral up there, without anchor. He makes many of the greats to whom he’s compared — Bert Jansch, for one — sound like choirboys. As to other distinctions, this set boasted a new song, “Funny Thing She Said”, as well as a cover of Van Morrison’s “Fair Play” from Veedon Fleece, the latter a worthwhile reimagining that again places Walker right up there with the rarefied company that came before him.

This set was recorded by Baby’s engineer Rubes, whose dedication to craft is obvious in his flawless mix of his board feed with the house mics. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Steve Gunn: January 11, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

One of the very best songs on Steve Gunn‘s Way Out Weather is a song inspired by Steve’s former noisy neighbor. In lesser hands, such banal subject matter might result in a bit of a dud. But Gunn turns the humble beginnings of “Milly’s Garden” into something wonderful and universal, a meditation on unease and the desire to move on. We last saw Gunn at Rough Trade in October, with his full band in tow, so this was a very different, but equally special kind of performance. Celebrating the first anniversary of the once-troubled (by noise complaints, at least) venue, Gunn played this gig solo but left the songs’ guitar explorations. Again, in lesser hands, a ten-plus minute “Old Strange” as a solo opener might not work — but Gunn’s kickoff to the night was magical. Poking fun at his trademark relaxed demeanor, Steve warned the Sunday afternoon crowd at the outset that they might fall asleep, but the house gave him their rapt attention, hanging on words shorn of everything surrounding them but his lone guitar. Gunn was in fine form, making us laugh in between songs that he played with dead-serious intent. To put an exclamation mark on the evening, Gunn closed with “Lurker”, which first debuted on the Three Lobed Recordings boxed set and was a treat as a full-band version back in October.

Since its inception, Rough Trade has been a valuable add to a neighborhood whose venues are depleting rapidly. Even if its surroundings may be fancier than the DIY spots that came before it, hosting an artist like Steve Gunn for your anniversary show proves that the Rough Trade folks intend to remain a credit to what this neighborhood was.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Kyle Lawrence. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Daniel Bachman: December 12, 2013 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Guitar prodigy and all-around nice guy Daniel Bachman closes out my posts for 2013, as he deserves to. This prolific young artist, who we first experienced at Hopscotch earlier this year, has been cranking out stunning solo guitar records at a breakneck pace, with the understated genius of Jesus, I’m A Sinner hitting shelves via Tompkins Square this year and another LP forthcoming on Asheville, NC imprint Bathetic Records in early-mid-2014. Based on some of his recent live sets, there seems to be yet more material at the ready for after that. This set previewed a bunch of the forthcoming record, and even gave Bachman a chance to do an extra-long set due to the disappearance of the night’s headliner. We were more than OK with that, as Daniel busted out some long songs to stretch it out, including “Copperhead” and his just-for-this-night mashup of “Blenheim” and “We Would Be Building”, which is streaming below. Daniel deserves your love and your ears, and we hope you dig it.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones. Other than some occasional HVAC noise in the audience mics, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Introducing the 23-year-old guitar prodigy Daniel Bachman at their day show event (where he played with Pelt), my friends at Paradise of Bachelors paid Bachman a high compliment indeed when they referred to him as the logical heir of the late, great Jack Rose. To compare anyone, even today’s best living guitarists, to Rose might well border on sacrilege for those who follow these types of musicians closely. At least, it would if Bachman didn’t live up to the hype. For those who saw him play a solo set of his signature steel string fingerstyle guitar at Raleigh’s Long View Center  during the Hopscotch Music Festival on this Friday night — recorded by our buddy David Schwentker — it became clear that he does.

The Chapel Hill based guitarist, originally of Fredricksburg, Virginia, has four solo albums under his belt already, including his two 2012 releases Seven Pines and Oh Be Joyful, plus two more records he recorded as Sacred Harp that were released back in 2010. He’s been playing this music, which he calls “psychedelic Appalachia”, since he was a teenager. What you hear on this recording is the product of years of Bachman honing his craft, as well as absorbing the lessons learned from sharing stages with the greats, including Rose. This set wandered all over Bachman’s catalog, including previewing two new tracks from his forthcoming third album on Tompkins Square, Jesus I’m A Sinner. Both of those songs — “Sarah Anne” and “Blenheim” — show the continuing promise of this fine young musician. Two of these songs — “Pig Iron” and the untitled number — are being recorded now, with release planned for 2014. Yes, you heard it right — Bachman has a new record that’s not even out yet, and he’s already on to the next project.

This set was recorded by David Schwentker with a direct soundboard feed from the Longview house board. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Glenn Jones: September 7, 2012 Hopscotch Festival, Memorial Auditorium (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I saw more incredible solo guitarists during the course of the Hopscotch Music Festival than I’ve seen in the rest of my life combined. Each man’s style left an impression, from the psychedelic leanings of Ben Chasny to the Piedmont blues influences of Chuck Johnson. Of all of these distinct and excellent players, none had a style of purer beauty than Glenn Jones. A devoted fan of John Fahey, arguably the founder of the American Primitivism style of guitar, Jones spent decades playing self-made compositions in his bedroom before finally gaining the courage to begin playing solo shows in public back in the early 2000s. (Jones was no stranger to performing in public generally, though – he has served as guitarist in the Boston-area instrumental band Cul de Sac since 1989.)  Today, Jones’ style draws not only from the country and blues that sparked American Primitivism, but also from classical guitar, which often gives his songs a lilting, elegiac quality that sets him apart from his peers.

Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium might have been a daunting venue for a solo guitarist who used to be afraid of performing in front of crowds; asking Jones to hold the attention of the massive hall completely unaccompanied was no small request. But Jones not only held his own, but shone, giving us an hour of his compositions interspersed with narratives that expanded on the songs’ themes. A good chunk of the set draws from Jones’ latest and best solo record, the 2011 Thrill Jockey release The Wanting.  One of the most striking aspects of Jones’ playing, for guitar aficionados, is his abandonment of standard tunings (which he did about 25 years ago, by his count).  Jones used a different tuning for every song on The Wanting, and that gives that record – and this set – another distinction.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a North Carolina-made Naiant tinybox preamp. Recording relatively quiet music in a large hall presents challenges, and in this case, the overall recording level was lower than optimal for most of the set. This means that some hiss from the recorder’s internal components and the house PA can be heard in the recording. However, it remains a worthwhile document of Jones and what he has to offer.  Enjoy!
