Megafaun: April 16, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

This Spring, we were fortunate to catch Megafaun four times in a span of less than three weeks. The final performance was their opening set for Sharon Van Etten at Music Hall in April. The set featured several new numbers, and now four months down the road the band is poised to release their new album (self-titled) on Hometapes Records on September 20, 2011. The band will also launch tours in September through Europe and the US. The local dates are a pair of nights at Mercury Lounge, on Saturday September 24 and Sunday September 25. We expect to capture at least one of the Mercury dates.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones on a stand in the upfront of the right side of the balcony, fifteen feet from the stage. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Minerva Lions: August 7, 2011 BBS at the Richardson – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

After a great set by Teletextile at the temporarily-related Backyard Brunch Sessions at The Richardson, Minerva Lions played an inspired set that showed off their soulful side, and debuted a new song to boot. The band has a classic, but updated sound that incorporates elements of folk, alt-country and rock; if you hear a little Wilco in them, that’s not such a bad thing. Lead vocalist Jared Samuel has a compelling, easy to like voice that can deliver laid-back phrasing, as on the opener “Megrims”, as easily as the deep blues of their cover of “Bring It On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke. Songwriting, as ever, is key, though, and Minerva Lions are on point there, too, with songs that are instantly memorable. Even in a four-song set, we saw several sides of the band stylistically, with the organ-dominated songs like the newly-debuted “You & Yr Arrow” giving a very different vibe than the more straight-ahead guitar sounds of songs like “Megrims.” Even without the backyard, Minerva Lions gave us a lovely, all-American music experience for a warm summer afternoon.

Tristen Gaspadarek has been writing and performing her heartfelt country-tinged songs for nearly half of her twenty-six years, and her intrinsic wisdom-beyond-years is evident in the strength of her writing. Tristen and The Ringers performed a tight forty-five minute set at Knitting Factory last night that featured much of the material from her new album Charlatans At The Garden Gate released last week on American Myth Records. It is an album that chronicles the power and destructive nature of love seen through the weary eyes of experienced world traveler. The most stark recitation of the struggle is featured in the relationship-with-an-addict number “Baby Drugs”, which can be streamed below. Tristen is one of those seriously talented artists who we expect big things from in the near future, and Charlatans is the likely conduit to that success. Tristen’s current tour wraps up with three more dates this week, before she heads to SXSW, and then continues throughout the country during April and May.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard location in this venue and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Quiet Life: January 30, 2011 The Rock Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tonight the Moondoggies/Quiet Life tour comes to a close with a show in Portland, the home base of Quiet Life. The two bands crossed the nation in unison, both as friends and as bands with musically similar identities. Two weeks ago, we caught the tour at Rock Shop and posted the Moondoggies recording last week. The opening set that night at Rock Shop was a revelation. Quiet Life write compelling songs with a strong dose of Americana. The vocalist Sean Spellman has a natural stage presence and the band’s excellent musicianship also shines live. The band released their new album Big Green the same week as this show, and the new songs were prominently featured in the setlist, including the extended jam of the set closing “Nighttime” (streaming below).

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Moondoggies set from the same night and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Moondoggies: January 30, 2011 The Rock Shop – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

While the critically easy way to approach The Moondoggies is to describe them as another in the line of Northwest “beardo” bands (i.e. Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses), their high-energy show at The Rock Shop on Sunday demonstrated their versatility and unwillingness to be pigeonholed. As the band opened with one of their oldest songs “Keep Her On The Line”, the folk rock strumming was forefront, but as the set progressed, the variety of styles and influences were diverse. “Its A Shame” owes a debt to Tonight’s The Night-era Neil Young, while “Black Shoe” (streaming below) echoes early Wilco, and “Ain’t No Lord” could be performed by Gary Louris. Perhaps acknowledging the granddaddies of the entire genre, Moondoggies closed the set with a cover of the Byrds version of the Dylan classic “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” (also streaming below). The Moondoggies new album Tidelands showcases their unique take on these various genres and establishes an identity for this superb band, and like their predecessors, their growth will only yield greater results.

I recorded this set with the DPA’s at the front of the board and mixed it with a soundboard feed. Unfortunately, for some reason the soundboard has a persistent whine/hum that rendered it unusable. As a result, this recording is the straight audience capture. There is some crowd chatter, but overall its still an excellent recording. Enjoy!

O’Death: January 15, 2011 Bell House – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

O’Death is back. In March, they will embark on a month-long cross-country tour. After two years of dormancy during which drummer David Rogers-Berry fought cancer, the band is ready to return. O’Death has recorded an entire new album, which will be released in the coming months. For a warmup, O’Death appeared Saturday night at Bell House. The band also discovered that their fan base is still very much intact and as ready as they are for the return. About half of the packed venue joined on the floor for an impromptu dance/mosh pit, as the band worked through an hour long set of their best material. The set also featured three of the new songs played for the first time live. O’Death will return to Brooklyn for a gig on April 15 at a venue to be determined.

We recorded this set with the Neumanns from the elevated area next to the soundboard. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Will Oldham is one of those musical old souls, whose sound is impeccably ageless. With songs that incorporate elements of Americana, folk, country, rock, punk, blues, and a tinge of gospel, he is the consummate American artist, carrying in his haunting voice the sound of six generations’ worth of hardscrabble and heartbreak. Oldham has recorded in recent years under the moniker Bonnie “Prince” Billy, with this particular roster of players dubbed Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang. Although they were opening for Yo La Tengo on the seventh night of their incredible Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s, Oldham and the band treated us to a full-length set that leaned heavily on Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang’s current release on Drag City, The Wonder Show of the World, but also showcased some rare and unusual numbers, including a cover of Willie Nelson’s “In God’s Eyes”, and the Hasidic spiritual “Dark’cho”. The players comprising the Cairo Gang gave each song the benefit of rich, full arrangements that highlighted Oldham’s unforgettable vocals. In particular, I was blown away by the soulful “Teach Me To Bear You” from The Wonder Show of the World, with an extended, more rocking closing than on the record. Having enjoyed Oldham’s records for years, it was truly a holiday gift to finally experience this incredible artist and songwriter’s live show.
