In what is perhaps the most NYCTaper-friendly tour announcement ever, last week it was revealed that Ryley Walker and Tonstartssbandht will co-headline a six-date Northeast tour in March that will arrive in New York at Bowery Ballroom on St. Patrick’s Day. I’ve already purchased the Bowery tickets, but we’ve had some serious discussions about doing multiple dates on this tour, with the mostly likely being the Portland Maine and Providence Rhode Island dates on the weekend after the Thursday night in New York. We shall see, but suffice to say its an exciting tour that should not be missed by us, or by anyone serious about good music.

But the Bowery will not be the first post-pandemic show in New York for our old friends Andy and Edwin White. In late October, they toured for Petunia, the band’s first proper album in three years and played a sold-out show at our own Market Hotel. I can not properly express how thoroughly renewing it was for us to see one of our favorite bands and favorite people play live again. Nevermind that the crowd also included a bunch of old friends, this night was just magic from start to finish. The band’s set concentrated primarily on the new album material, and flowed as their sets always do, in remarkable continuity. The energy was peak throughout and hit a crescendo during the set-closing “Sorcerer“, ending a wonderful night in truly excellent fashion. We expect more of these peaks on the tour in March.

I recorded this set with the installed Neumann hypercards blended with an excellent board feed mixed by Osaro. We are very pleased with the sound quality of this capture. Enjoy!

Tonstartssbandht: January 25, 2017 Sunnyvale

Its been a few years since Tonstartssbandht last appeared on NYCTaper. In March, Tonstartss will release a new album Sorcerer, their first on Mexican Summer. The band that consists of brothers Andy and Edwin White have played under this name for about a decade and have released somewhere in the range of 20 albums via various labels and Bandcamp, but not a proper “studio” album since 2011’s Now I Am Become. The band is also currently on their first extended tour in a while, as the brothers have spent time on other projects — mostly notably Andy White’s position as lead guitar in Mac DeMarco’s touring band.

In January, the TBT tour came to Brooklyn and sold out Sunnyvale on a Wednesday night. The brothers played an extended set that included all of the three long tracks from Sorcerer and a ton of older TBT tracks and covers all interspersed in their unique segue-style stream-of-consciousness show. The Whites are the sons of a long-time professional musician and have played together for their entire lives so there’s a definite telepathy going on every time they take the stage that allows their sets to freely weave from one musical idea to the next. This inventiveness and unpredictability is one of the most compelling aspects of Tonstartssbandht and is why we keep coming back for more. Tonstartss are currently in Europe but return to the US for shows in May, all dates [HERE].

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the stage and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

I made a concerted effort not long after listening to their new album Overseas, to memorize the difficult spelling of the band name Tonstartssbandht. I figured it was an investment to save time in the future. This site and this band are destined to be frequent partners moving forward — Tonstartssbandht seems to be a natural kindred spirit to this site. They play music in the most natural way, inspired by both their predecessors and their unique manner of creation — their live shows contain moments of improvisation and unlikely segues perhaps only possible when the band is a duo of brothers. The knee-jerk contemporary comparison is to Nashville brothers JEFF the Brotherhood, but really that band is a very different creature. While JEFF is a party duo fueled by 70s hard rock and Tennessee whiskey, TSB is an experience more akin to sharing some good herb on a muggy summer night. And speaking of Summer, in the heat of July we were fortunate to capture the band at the relatively new space on Broadway in Bushwick called Palisades. The venue was cool and inviting and has a very authentic Brooklyn DIY vibe. Its no surprise that premiere promoter Ad Hoc is booking a lot of events at the venue and this night was also one of their shows. In terms of performance, TSB were exactly as we’d hoped and maybe even a bit more. The set was like the Overseas record, a mix of songs and styles in a nearly continuous flowing set. The band only took a couple of breaks to talk to the crowd and the banter tracks are both natural and somewhat humorous, but then it was back to business. We are happy that the band was generous with their time and helped us complete the setlist for the recording. In reality, each track is really several numbers in a “medley” and we are streaming the “Susie Medley” as a prime example of what Tonstartssbandht does best.

But you need not take my word for it. Tonstartssbandht is back in NYC for a show at Mercury Lounge on Monday night, September 15. See you there!

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand at the soundboard about 20 feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed provided by venue FOH Ariel Bitran. The sound quality is very authentic to the sound in the venue and fully captures the experience from that night. Enjoy!
