Dream Syndicate: December 2, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

There was a point early during Saturday night’s Dream Syndicate show at Bowery Ballroom when I thought to myself, I can not believe that is only the second show of the band’s current tour. The amazement was based on the fact that the band was just so damned tight. Its true that Steve Wynn and guitarist Jason Victor have played together regularly for more than a decade, but Dream Syndicate was not that long ago a “reunion” band. A band coming back together after years apart isn’t supposed to sound this in-sync. But over the last couple of years the band started recording again, and the result was an excellent new album called How Did I Find Myself Here (Anti).

The Dream Syndicate is currently on an extensive tour to support the new record, and if the Bowery show is any indication, this tour is destined for legendary status. The set mixed in material old and new and was clearly high energy from the start. The band didn’t take many breaks between songs to banter, but just rolled on one ripping track after another. Its says a lot about the new record that the show-stopping number was a twelve-minute version of the title track that was absolutely shredded. But the classic material was also on display and an all-timer version of “Days Of Wine and Roses” ended the main set in furious fashion before the band returned for three encores. Don’t miss this tour. All dates are (here).

I recorded this set in our usual fashion in this venue mixing the strategically placed Schoeps with an excellent soundboard feed from the band’s touring FOH. Unfortunately, I inexplicably lost power for about thirty seconds during the second song, which now contains a noticeable splice. Otherwise, the quality is superb. Enjoy!

Xenia Rubinos: April 13, 2017 Bowery Ballroom

There’s no earthly reason why Xenia Rubinos should not be a household name in the very near future. She is an artist of immense talents as a writer, composer and performer and her art is true. The musical genres that are home to Xenia Rubinos’ exemplary music have been previously culturally appropriated by the likes of well-to-do Ivy League grads, a Smith grad from Connecticut, and a guy from Forest Hills. But as a person of color who has lived the bitter mistreatment of her protagonists, Xenia is in a position to present a necessary point of view at a troubling historical time when authenticity is crucial. The world needs more voices like Xenia Rubinos and her time is now.

In July Xenia Rubinos released Black Terry Cat, her first album for the Anti- label and second overall. The album received an 8.0 from Laura Snapes over at Pitchfork and pretty much universally positive reviews worldwide. In support, she’s toured tirelessly throughout the US and this month saw her triumphant return to NYC.

The Bowery Ballroom show was a special night for Xenia. Not only was it her largest show to date, but it was also her mother’s birthday. Given that her first album was in part a tribute to her recently passed father, it was particularly moving that this performer had a close family connection on such an important career night. The other important participants at Bowery were the crowd, who were both voluminous and dancing throughout, and her two accompanying musicians — longtime collaborator and producer Marco Buccelli who played a variety of drums, keys and effects, and for this tour Jack Hill on bass, moog and guitar. The set began with the opening track from Cat before the trio blasted through a fifteen-song set that fully represented Xenia’s catalog thus far. There were multiple pockets of fans who literally did not stop dancing throughout the entire set and were engaged with the performer throughout. But it was Xenia who was the well-deserved center of attention as she pivoted from keys to bass to solo vocals as an unstoppable kinetic ball of energy. At the end of the hour-long set she was called back for multiple encores — a true affirmation that an artist with integrity and abundant talent will ultimately succeed.

Xenia Rubinos just began an extensive eleven-date tour of Europe in April and May before she returns to the US for a variety of Summer shows, dates [HERE].

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards set up in our usual front balcony position and mixed with an excellent board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Antlers: July 30, 2012 Glasslands Gallery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Antlers “secret” show at Glasslands Gallery on Monday was announced in the morning and sold out within a few minutes. For a band that sold out the 1200-capacity Webster Hall the last time they played New York, The Antlers took the opportunity of this small surprise gig to play for an extremely worthwhile charitable effort. Charitywater.org is an organization that provides safe and clean drinking water to developing nations, and this concert raised more than $4000 for the cause. The Antlers also treated the crowd to a run-through their brand new four-song EP Undersea (Anti Records). The EP represents the continued maturity in the songwriting talents of this superb band, as each of the four tracks are less lyrically driven and more intense sonic atmospheric pieces. That’s not to say that Peter Silberman’s voice doesn’t soar at several points during the EP, but this is a band that has taken the studio like a fish to water and the results are astounding. At Glasslands, the EP was performed straight through and the live setting offered some challenges, but the band was prepared and the songs flowed naturally. We are streaming “Crest” from the EP. The balance of the set consisted of selected tracks from Hospice and Burst Apart, songs that continue to mature and develop as live performances. After a profound “Dog To Sleep”, the band returned for two encores the final of which was a brilliant “Wake”, which we are also streaming below. The Antlers will be on tour for the next several months, but return to NYC for a gig at the newly arrived ATP Festival on September 22.

I recorded this set utilizing our installed recording rig at Glasslands, the Studio Projects LSD2 mics and an excellent board feed. The sound quality of this recording is superb. Enjoy!
