Atlas Sound: December 18, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

On Sunday night at Bowery Ballroom, Atlas Sound performed damned near the perfect concert. This was a performer of immense talents playing nearly two hours of superb music — much of it from his acclaimed new album — at the City’s best sounding venue. We make no secret of our admiration for Bradford Cox on this site, but this was Bradford at a level of excellence that we had not previously witnessed. Over the last two years, we’ve seen the development of the Parallax material in a live setting, from the Bell House in early 2010 to St. Cecelia’s Church last Summer. But what elevated this Bowery show above the rest was not just the final polish on a finished and released album, but the near flawless level of proficiency with which Bradford performed. The Parallax numbers (nine of the twelve songs were played) were stretched out and allowed to breath, while Bradford developed looping tracks that were faithful to the album’s theme. For instance, the title track which times at less than three minutes on the album, spanned over seven minutes live — a purposeful and focused seven minutes. The song transitions were natural and did not sound awkward or forced at all, and even in the few tracks where he did not loop, Bradford sounded confident and comfortable. “Mona Lisa”, which is arguably the most “pop” track on the album became a sweet optimistic folk song live, and we are streaming it below. We would have been satisfied with the 75 minutes of the main set, but he returned and played over thirty minutes of encore material, which included two extended songs to end the set. With what Bradford had just given the audience, a little bit of indulgence was not only acceptable, but welcome.

I recorded this set from our standard balcony position at this venue with the four microphone rig and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Deerhunter: August 23, 2011 Webster Hall – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The first show I saw by the ultra-talented recording artist Bradford Cox was an Atlas Sound set at the ATP New York music festival in 2009. It was a disaster. Consisting mostly of pedal troubles and tuning woes that took up more than half the set, with Bradford apologizing profusely, it didn’t live up to the promise of the recorded material. So, despite the unique, compelling sound of Bradford’s records, I was reluctant about the live show – even though both Deerhunter and Atlas Sound have been featured on this site many times (albeit not my recordings).

This Deerhunter show at Webster Hall erased my doubts – and made me kick myself for not going to see this band sooner. This show was one of the best I have seen this year, with Bradford confidently, brilliantly owning his instrument, his voice, and the stage. Deerhunter is rock music – popular(ish) rock music, at least – at its bleeding edge, where Radiohead used to be, creating an entirely new sound from the tools that have (mostly) been there for rock’s 40+ years. This show kicked off with the anthemic “Fluorescent Grey”, featuring original bandmember Colin Mee, who stuck around for the first five songs. The band spent the entire show bathed in green light, with Cox commanding a visceral torrent of sound. The band’s live sound feels like a living, breathing thing – an alien form that surges, crackles, crinkles and trills. The band’s best songs on this night were otherworldly: “Nothing Ever Happened” morphed into an extended jam, with Cox melding in some of Patti Smith’s “Land”. “Twilight at Carbon Lake”, closing the main set, held us in rapture. Almost the entire show was seamless, with extended guitar loops and chirps filling in between songs. The show ended with “Calvary Scars II”, which bled into an extended loop that terminated as the lights went up.

As this show ended, I understood what had happened at ATP a few years ago. Cox may not always be perfect – someone as prolific, as ambitious as he is almost can’t be. But he is the kind of artist whose excesses must not only be tolerated, but celebrated – this creator needs every encouragement we can give him to create and succeed. And when he does succeed, you get a night like this night: phenomenal.

I recorded this set from the center of the floor with the DPA microphones. I spent a great deal of time post-processing and was rewarded with an excellent recording than is free of unnecessary crowd chatter almost throughout. No recording can match the experience of being at a show like this – but turn this up, and you might get close. Enjoy!

Atlas Sound: June 16, 2011 St. Cecelia’s Church – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The opening night of The Northside Festival offered a must-see event, Atlas Sound performing inside the beautiful and ornate Church of St. Cecelia in a remote section of Eastern Williamsburg. I last saw Atlas Sound eighteen months ago, at a memorable show at Bell House, but missed Bradford Cox’s solo project the last time he played in town. On Thursday night, Bradford brought a full slate of new material and performed six new songs in a thirteen song set. Of the new numbers, only “Terra Incognita” has a known title, but each of the songs represent a continued evolving of Cox’s ability to create intricate melodies through the precise synchronization of looped guitar effects. In the encore segment, Bradford went as far as to create an improvised song from whole cloth that miraculously sounded nearly complete. It was quite an appropriate conclusion for a performance on the altar of a catholic church.

We recorded this set with the warmer DPA microphones on a stand elevated to 12 feet at a distance from the stage of approximately 30 feet and mixed it with a well balanced feed from the board. The natural reverb of the room compliments the clarity of the line feed for a superb recording. A caveat is that there are intermittent bits of static from the stage during the second half of the set, and one burst of stage noise during the first song. Enjoy!
