Seattle garage rockers Night Beats helmed a stacked bill this night at Baby’s All Right that also featured Frankie Rose’s new project Beverly (that recording to be posted soon pending band approval), Hamish Kilgour’s latest project Roya, and Brooklyn garage punks LODRO. Night Beats had been teasing new songs for a while (including our last meet up with them at Glasslands) and we’ve finally gotten to see the final versions in the form of the songs on their record Sonic Bloom. Much of that material was on display on this night, but the Beats jumped around some, playing some more new ones, plus songs from their self-titled debut LP. Of note from that album in particular were a fiery “Puppet On A String” and the jammed-out set closer “The Other Side”, but the real fun came in hearing new songs like “Dewayne’s Drone” and “Useless Game” come to life. The Beats were joined after the show by the Black Lips on the turntables, and returned the favor the following night when they opened for the Lips at the lame corporate marketing opportunity House of Vans.

This set was recorded by Baby’s All Right head of production Devin Foley using the house multitrack system, whose files I produced and mixed down. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Katy Goodman is authentically one of the nicest people in the indie music scene. Its hard to fathom how someone could be so positive, always smiling and so friendly to seemingly anyone she encounters. Its very easy to root for the success of someone with her disposition — and its especially true given the excellent quality of La Sera’s new album Hour Of The Dawn. At the CD release show for the album at Baby’s All Right last month, La Sera played to a packed room of admirers and the smiles were all around. The band played through seven of the nine tracks of Hour and a couple of older songs before closing the set with the title track. We’re streaming that performance below. It featured an extended guitar interplay between Todd Wisenbaker and Greta Morgan — during which Katy jumped into the crowd and played her bass among the fans. The humorous part of the show and part of what makes Katy so likeable is that she spent much of the encore break apologizing to the fan who got hit by the neck of the bass in the audience. The fan said no problem, all was forgiven, and the band ended the set with a rollicking encore. La Sera will begin a European tour in May (dates here), that includes an appearance at the Primavera Sound Festival.

This set was recorded on the installed Multitrack system at Baby’s All Right by sound tech Devin Foley and we mixed the raw files. The sound is pro-quality. Enjoy!

The Everymen: May 19, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

In this day and age, a band like The Everymen represents a deceptively audacious move. In a rock n’ roll universe ruled by microgenres and pressured commercially by laptop geeks, EDM, hip-hop and every manner of crossover in between, The Everymen are, more or less, a really good Jersey Shore bar band. Now, there are still many of those bands out there — the show must go on, down the Shore and elsewhere — but if you limit it to ones with the Everymen’s ambitions, well, there’s just one. Like a baby version of the E Street Band, this is old-style, big-tent, big-band rock that’s proud of its roots but seeking to plant its seed elsewhere. How many bands with this aesthetic play venues like Baby’s All Right, in still-musically-relevant Williamsburg? More importantly, how many of them could ever claim to actually pull it off?

Much of the credit for The Everymen’s broad appeal goes to frontman Mike V, an affable dude whose big heart and natural charisma make him a fit in any bar serving High Life and Narragansett, whether ironically or otherwise.  He’s a born entertainer, an easy jokester with the crowd, and, judging by this show, a maker of excellent setlists. Any band who kicks off their record release show (for the band’s second full-length, Givin’ Up on Free Jazz) with a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” is clearly playing for keeps. From there, the band took us through all of Free Jazz, which adds stronger songwriting to the style of their 2012 LP New Jersey Hardcore, and takes further advantage of the band’s deep roster of players. The album’s leadoff single, “Spain” is as good an example as any, with Mike V and Catherine Herrick sharing lead vocals, the horns blaring, and the keys lighting a fire under some blazing guitars. But The Everymen weren’t content to just begin with a bang; after the album was done, we were treated to covers of Def Leppard, Billy Ocean and INXS, plus some of the best-loved of the band’s older numbers including the always-massive set closer “Boss Johnny and the Get Lucky”. The Everymen may have broad appeal, but not everyone can do it like they do it.

This recording was made by lead Baby’s All Right engineer Devin Foley using the house multitrack system, including Audio Technica 4041 microphones capturing the feel of the room. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Megafaun: May 2, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

This was one of those nights. Megafaun aren’t exactly breaking up, but because each member of the trio has an abundant amount of other projects pulling them in all directions, this show at Baby’s All Right had the feeling that it might be the band’s last in NYC, if not forever then for a very long time. The local musical who’s-who seemed to sense the historic nature of the occasion — either that or Megafaun has a lot of important friends. In the crowd was the author Jesse Jarnow, the writer Richard Gehr, Northern Spy Records founder Adam Downey, Sharon Van Etten and every member of her band. But the most notable celeb in attendance was on stage — former bandmate and recent Grammy winner Justin Vernon joined Megafaun for this seemingly final mini-tour. The band’s set was a bit ragged-but-right, as generally speaking most Megafaun sets we’ve seen have been. This is a band known almost as much for its pure spirit as its songwriting and performing. The setlist included pretty much all of the old favorites you’d want to hear, and one excellent cover that we’re streaming below. There will be plenty of opportunities to see the individual members of Megafaun with their various projects — Brad Cook is in Sharon’s current touring band — but this might have been the last proper Megafaun show. As as a send-off, though, it was a pretty sweet show.

This set was recorded by Baby’s FOH Devin Foley with the venue’s installed multitrack system. All I did was mix it down. There was one wrinkle though, as the encore song was played off mic in the middle of the floor. For that song, I only used the two mounted room mics. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

New Bums represents a new singer-songwriter oriented project from Ben “Six Organs of Admittance” Chasny and Donovan Quinn of Skygreen Leopards. The duo, touring their Drag City release Voices In A Rented Room, shared songs from that intimate, Americana-tinged song cycle with us at Baby’s All Right a few weeks ago to a fervent crowd of admirers. Anyone familiar with these players knows to expect nothing less than excellence, and that’s very much what they delivered. These low-key compositions don’t aspire to the same kind of nirvana as Chasny and Quinn’s more experimental main projects, but they’re nonetheless satisfying, especially as the pair’s voices and playing styles complement each other. The Baby’s space — intimate but not shabby — proved the perfect place to hear these songs live. Now head back to your bedroom or another quiet place and put on the headphones. You’ll see what I mean.

This set was recorded by Devin Foley 0n the house digital multitrack recorder, which I mixed down and edited. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Coathangers: April 17, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

The Atlanta all-female punk threesome The Coathangers go for the jugular, but they go for it with a smile. Since their last record, 2011’s Larceny and Old Lace, they no longer have a keyboard player (Candice Jones aka Bebe Coathanger), but stripping down has served them well. The raw ferocity of the remaining members — Minnie Coathanger (Meredith Franco), Crook Kid Coathanger (Julia Kugel) and Rusty Coathanger (Julia Luke) — is more than enough to fill a stage and dominate a forty-five minute set.

This show at Baby’s All Right gave us a look at the material from their 2014 release, Suck My Shirt, and if these songs are any indication, they’re more than fine without the keyboards. The ladies in this band share vocal duties producing an enticing mix of babydoll sweetness and punk snarl. The band’s other most notable component is their shared sense of humor, which can run to dark places, starting with the band name (a reference to the bad old days of abortion).

Throughout the set, the band offered ample doses of self-effacing humor to go with their reckless, infectious songs. When we last saw them, Larceny and Old Lace had just hit the shelves, and they gave new life to several of those now-keyboardless songs like the burner of a set opener, “Johnny” and melodic, somewhat slower-paced “Trailer Park Boneyard”, which was one of my favorites. The new Suck My Shirt material really shone, from the blistering “Adderall” and “Springfield Cannonball” to the rough and raucous “Smother”. The night’s closer, “Don’t Touch My Shit”, was perhaps the perfect example of how punk can grow up without getting lame. The band brought the eight-year old daughter of a friend of the band a young girl who is (one of the band members’ relatives/daughter? If you know… feel free to let me know in the comments) in on guest vocals. We were warned that she’d be saying some bad words, and she did. Best to get them started off early if you want ’em to turn out right!

Axxa / Abraxas: March 21, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Axxa / Abraxas, like many of their Captured Tracks forebears, began in a bedroom. In this case, the bedroom of Atlanta native Ben Asbury, who drew influences near his hometown as well as his current home to create his self-titled debut. That record, produced by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, owes Taveniere’s main project an obvious debt, from the jangly guitars to a Jeremy Earl-style high falsetto vocal on some songs. What’s missed there, but more evident live, is the free-flowing style of the Elephant 6 collective from nearby Athens, Georgia, whose members are as legendary for their live shows as for their far-out styles. Bringing out these tunes live at Baby’s All Right must’ve been no easy task for Asbury and his bandmates, as the record’s slick production style doesn’t necessarily tell all of the band’s story. What you find out in the live setting is that the core of this music is Asbury’s skill at the axe; at age 23, he’s dropping some serious solos. Axxa / Abraxas feels more like a Brooklyn band at the start of their career than the polished crew you hear on the LP, and in many ways, that’s a good thing. One of this band’s greatest assets is youthful exuberance, and you could feel that in the room in a way you can’t on an album. You get the sense that, with more time with this material under their belt, it’ll only get better. Asbury’s best days are yet to come, and it’s going to be a great ride.

I recorded this set with the digital multitrack system at Baby’s All Right, set up by engineer David Lefcourt, together with an onstage pair of Naiant X-X omnidirectional microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

MV & EE: February 24, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Night two of MV & EE‘s Monday residencies at Baby’s All Right delivered on the same or an even higher level than the first. No longer stuck with a Monday of a holiday weekend for a time slot, the duo of Erika Elder and Matt Valentine played these two sets to a well-packed house. Set one found the pair getting things on track, with them sharing their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color” again, among other gems. But it was set two that really found the Vermont-based pair firing on all cylinders, playing perhaps the most concise yet diverse song cycle of the four that they shared during these New York performances. After a perfectly-timed “Tea Devil”, Valentine picked up the sitar to jam profusely on “Environments” which flowed into “Space Drums” — an audacious move considering MV & EE weren’t even playing with a drummer. They ended the night on “Lead Me To Vibration” from their latest LP, Shade Grown, leaving us with positive vibes we hope will carry over to their next visit.

As with the previous MV & EE recording from this year, this recording was made with a full multitrack digital fileset generously provided by house engineer Devin Foley, together with my Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Vivian Girls: March 2, 2014 Baby’s All Right (Final Show!) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Oh, the Vivian Girls. You know you’ve been around awhile when you have witnessed the entire life cycle of a band like this. It wasn’t that long ago, to us, that our then-young site was covering an up-and-coming all-female band at places like the East Village Radio Fest and some extremely random ToddP venues. Pretty soon, like any good little band that could, the Vivs were playing spots like Bowery Ballroom. They were loved, yet not universally so, and maybe that’s as clear a sign as any that they mattered. As so eloquently summed up in Jenn Pelly’s comprehensive Pitchfork piece, if you didn’t like the band because they were “lo fi”, if you didn’t like the band because they weren’t avant-garde or music school enough, well, that’s on you. The Vivs wrote good songs. They wrote songs that sounded good in the spaces where their people were, in shitty apartments and on shitty rented PAs and, yes, on those shitty white iPhone headphones, by then ubiquitous. In their moment, as an all-female guitar band, they broke ceilings, too.

It’s fitting that this final show took place at the brand-spanking-new Baby’s All Right, a type of venue that would’ve been almost-unthinkable in the Williamsburg of 2007, when the Vivs hit the scene. Baby’s has a real liquor license, cool stage lights, a professional sound system. There’s a full-service restaurant in it that can (with 24 hours notice) serve you a whole pig. A bar that serves microbrews, makes a decent Old Fashioned. It’s a far cry from Monster Island Basement, or even Zebulon or Music Hall‘s old ghost, Northsix.

But what hasn’t changed is as important as what has. Like old times, the band played loud to a crowd where everyone knew the songs. People crowd surfed, and you could also find the band members out there too, Katy Goodman rocking out on the floor, surrounded by her peers (and maybe even a few curious synthpop refugees). This is one of those “last shows” that may give itself the lie, in the end, and that’s OK. These women aren’t quitting music — even, in a general sense, this band’s style of music. Goodman has La Sera (our most recent recording here), Cassie Ramone has The Babies (our best recording here), Ali Koehler has Upset. So enjoy these old songs, then, for what they are: A once-in-a-lifetime quality rendering of them, ramshackle sounds going out in style. The Girls were having fun, in front of friends as well as their parents. The lucky few got to see “Out For the Sun” descend into noise jam territory as the band members cavorted onstage and with the audience, taking the energy of the room to its peak. The three-song encore did everything it needed to send them off right: their cover of The Wipers‘ “Telepathic Love”, followed by “All The Time” straight into the night’s closer, “No”. Just under one hour and eighteen songs, and that was it. Balloons got popped, shots got drunk, there were goodbyes. It wasn’t exactly the end of an era, but it was an end, and a great one.

We are truly grateful to the Vivian Girls, Baby’s All Right engineer Devin Foley, and their entire team for allowing us the level of access we had to make this final recording. This is an 18-track digital multitrack recording from the soundboard that also includes two Naiant audience mics to capture the spirit of the crowd and sound of the room. It may still be “lo fi” by studio standards, but by the site’s standards, this is one for the ages. We hope you enjoy.

MV & EE: February 17, 2014 Baby’s All Right – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

MV & EE are one of those acts that’s so prolific, and whose output is so varied, one would be a fool to try and summarize it all. Cosmic voyagers Matt Valentine and Erika Elder began their journey more than a decade ago, combining Indian raga style with deep psych and damaged Appalachian folk into something wholly new and often unexpected. The duo has a mini-residency going this month at Baby’s All Right, a relatively new Williamsburg venue and restaurant that’s as good-looking as it is inviting. Elder and Valentine served up two sets’ worth of material that covered a range of their career, including songs from their latest, Shade Grown. Building gradually, the first set began with the early slow-burner “Beautiful Mountain”, then “Tea Devil” from the band’s Three Lobed release Country Stash, and “Leaves” from their Woodsist LP Space Homestead, ending with the countrified twang of “Shotgun Willie”. Set two found Valentine and Elder kicking off with “Shit’s Creek” (also from Space Homestead) before taking things into the deep jam zone, as an extra-heady “Too Far To See”,  flowed into an extended jam before landing on a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color”, jamming into the beat-backed “Cocola Parabola”. This show whetted our appetite for the band’s next appearance at the venue this coming Monday, which is a free show. If you haven’t had a chance to check out MV & EE, not to mention Williamsburg’s finest new venue, this is your chance.

This recording was made with a full multitrack digital fileset generously provided by house engineer Devin Foley, together with my Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
