Megafaun: March 30, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Inexplicably, prior to their three straight nights opening for the Mountain Goats, I had not seen Megafaun live. I had seen Brad Cook on stage with Bon Iver and with Sharon Van Etten, but the true Megafaun experience had eluded me. These three shows confirmed what I had been told — this band is a heck of a lot of fun on stage. Their albums are enjoyably rich americana, but live the band takes on the gregarious personalities of the three members. The banter is hilarious, the songs compel audience participation and ad lib/improv bits add color the material. The final of the three nights was the band’s tightest and most enjoyable performance, but really we could have posted any or all three of their opening sets. Catch Megafaun again in NYC next week, Saturday April 16 at Music Hall of Williamsburg, opening for Sharon Van Etten.

I recorded this set with the Neumann’s pointed at the stacks from the balcony rail and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Tuesday night’s Bowery show was the second of three consecutive dates at the NYC venue, but it also happened to be the very day that the new the Mountain Goats album All Eternals Deck (Merge) was released. John Darneille spoke about his positive mental health on this particular release day — as well he should. All Eternals Deck is a superb album, and several of those songs featured at this show were already set highlights. We are streaming “Birth of Serpents” below, but we could well have featured the show opener “Liza Forever Minnelli”, “Damn These Vampires”, or a song which earned an encore slot on this night “Estate Sale Sign”. Despite the focus on the strong new material, John did not however forsake the vintage material and performed some outstanding older and more obscure songs, including “Home Again Garden Grove”, “Sinaloan Milk Snake Song”, and “Jeff Davis County Blues”, and even an unreleased song “Shower”. This night did not feature any special guests, but at nearly two hours, it was the longest show of the run.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous night and the sound quality is again superb. This are two bursts of static during “Seeing Daylight” that were caused when my recording machine was jostled during the cleanup of a full beer spilled on my stuff. Otherwise enjoy this excellent recording!

The Mountain Goats returned to NYC for the first time since late 2009 for a sold-out run of three shows at Bowery Ballroom. The band is on tour in support of the new album All Eternals Deck (Merge), which was released on Tuesday. Although the Monday show was a celebratory affair and the longest of the three shows, it was also the first night to sell out, so that the crowd contained a large majority of diehards who felt the need to scream out requests for the most obscure songs. But John was in very good spirits and was not rattled by the persistent requests in his banter with the crowd. The setlist was nice mix of older and new material as only five of the thirteen All Eternals Deck songs were played on this night. John played a special request for a friend (“Going to Port Washington”) and acceded to one of the crowd’s obscure calls (“Baboon”), but mostly kept to the written list. The surprise of the evening was the appearance of The Hold Steady lead singer Craig Finn, who shared vocal duties on “This Year” (streaming below).

I recorded this set with the Neumanns at the balcony rail pointed at the stacks and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

La Sera: March 2, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

La Sera is the new LA-based project from Katy Goodman, best known for her work with the Vivian Girls. La Sera may be an LA band but the Bowery Ballroom crowd welcomed Katy and her new band with open arms, and well they should have. La Sera more or less picks up where the Vivians left off, but adds a lighter California twist that befits their hometown. La Sera songs, compared to the Vivians, are suffused with a sunnier tone that borrows from the girl groups of the 60s and California surf rock, with the Vivians’ layers of feedback stripped away. That leaves Goodman’s voice and her pretty, spare arrangements, which is all to the good, as she can sing the hell out of these songs. This set included a number of new songs – impressive considering that Goodman release La Sera’s debut LP, La Sera, just earlier this year – as well as a spot-on cover of the Mamas and the Papas’ “Dedicated to the One I Love.” Despite her use of rotating touring bands (because Goodman continues as a member of the Vivian Girls, she cannot consistently keep one La Sera together), this band delivered the songs confidently, setting the stage perfectly for the headliner, Tennis (also recorded).

I recorded this set from the same location as the Tennis recording, but utilized only the Microtech-Gefell microphones. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Akron/Family: March 5, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Akron/Family shows tend to be celebratory affairs, so the end-of-tour sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night was quite likely the ultimate A/F affair. As the band is touring throughout the year behind the superb new album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, the setlists have been geared primarily towards the new material, but on this night the band took their time and opened smoothly into a sweet version of the older “We All Will”, before launching to an extended “River”. Of the Shinju songs, “So It Goes” was quite electric on this night and we’ve chosen to stream it below. Several drum-oriented jams broke out during the evening, not the least of which closed out the incendiary “Raising the Sparks”, a song which had so impressed at Knitting Factory last month for entirely different reasons. In a true acknowledgment of the collective energy of the crowd, A/F closed the show with a full participatory version of “Love And Space” that extended for a full eight minutes. Akron/Family will start another tour in a few weeks, when they will play the West coast and the Soutwest.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard balcony location in this venue and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Just eight months into its existence, Tennis is a success story. Many bands toil in obscurity for years hoping to break it big (in the NYC scene at least) by headlining Bowery Ballroom; Tennis have already accomplished that feat with a full-on sellout as the icing. This unlikely story of a band born out of husband and wife Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore taking a seven-month sailing trip down the Atlantic coast, and deciding to turn it into a record, has resonated big-time in the indie world. People are paying attention undoubtedly because the nautical, retro conceit of their debut album, Cape Dory, is so unusual, but the band has got the songs to keep people interested. The band’s breezy sound, equal parts girl group and surf rock, is easy to like, an effortless-sounding sort of country club indiepop that the kids can get into, but is probably safe for the parents, too.

Tennis’ live performance is confident and unselfconscious as well (one advantage of being in a band with your spouse, perhaps). Moore introduced many songs by name, some with a bit of charming backstory. Of the new song, “Robin”: “Patrick doesn’t like me to say what it’s about – it’s too cute-seeming – but it’s about a baby bird that we saved last month.” Like the hilariously retro album cover for Cape Dory (Moore in a tight aqua jumpsuit with the band’s name etched in a hair metal font above her), Tennis are nothing if not cute. Although the show was notably brief at almost exactly 42 minutes, the band packed in a lot of music, including their signature number “Marathon” featuring Katy Goodman, lately of the excellent La Sera (whose opening set was also recorded and to be posted soon) and more famously of the Vivian Girls, and Molly Hamilton of the stellar new band Widowspeak on backing vocals. With spring and summer approaching, Tennis should be a fixture on indie fans’ playlists for the next few seasons (and of course, should be a staple on any sailing trips they may be taking).

I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue with a combination of the Microtech-Gefell hypercardioid microphones and DPA omnidirectional microphones for room ambiance. Although there is some audible buzzing from the PA between songs (caused by the band’s instruments) the sound is crystal clear and a great listen. Enjoy!

Drive-By Truckers: February 15, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Being the standard-bearers for Southern rock can’t be an easy job and Drive-By Truckers not only do it well, but manage it with a smile on their faces. Constant touring and marathon concerts that would hospitalize lesser people appear to make this group thrive and get better every time I’ve seen them perform. Billed as the release show for their new album that had officially hit stores that day, the beautifully dark ‘Go-Go Boots‘, the band played nearly all the tracks from it during the course of this two and a half hour gig. Both the disc and the night served as somewhat of a tribute to late songwriter/musician (and Patterson Hood family friend) Eddie Hinton who was honored not only with two covers of his songs, but also a beautiful take on the seldom-played “Sandwiches for the Road”. In addition to a few acoustic spots, DBT filled out the set with tracks from all of their albums. It made for an impressive night showcasing their outstanding and diverse talents.

Set up in our usual spot next to the soundboard in the balcony, the mix on this night was exceptional. And in the Bowery Ballroom where it’s usually great, that’s saying something. The resultant recording is excellent and ranks as one of the best I’ve personally ever pulled. Enjoy!

Redemption is sweet, especially when it follows several years of intense struggle. On Tuesday, the New York Times published an article and interview with Nicole Atkins called “Musical Survivor Hustles for a Second Chance“, which describes her travails since she separated from Columbia Records. But the title is misleading. Nicole is not seeking a “second chance”, but rather with the release of Mondo Amore (Razor & Tie) this week, the ability to make the albums she envisions and to control her own fate. At the sold-out and breakout Bowery Ballroom show last night, Nicole Atkins proved that she is indeed up to the task and very much in control. As the nine-piece band bounded on stage, Nicole’s delayed entrance wasn’t so much for dramatic effect as to indicate who was in charge. As she led the band through a set that consisted of every track on the new album, a few songs from her first album, and some eclectic covers, Nicole proved that ultimately it all boils down to that voice — a magical instrument that bursts forth in every song with abundant character and melody. The highlights of the set included the set-closing thoroughly powerful “The Tower” in which her voice soared, and which is an early contender for performance of the year. The show concluded with a quiet and soulful performance of 2007’s “Neptune City”, a song which likely feels as if it was recorded in a different lifetime for Nicole, but which carries so much more redemptive meaning now.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the balcony rail and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We’ve seen The War On Drugs twice recently and each time they were mighty impressive. In August at Knitting Factory, their set was far superior to the headlining Black Mountain, as their aggressive performance showed more psych-rock muscle than their contemporaries. On Saturday night at Bowery opening for Sharon Van Etten, the mood and setting required a more refined approach. Whether intentional or due to the excellent clarity of the room mix at Bowery, The War On Drugs delivered a stunning forty minute set that was less Zep-influenced and more Dylan and The Band-sounding. The opening song “Arms Like Boulders” (streaming below) set the tone with a jangly lyric-laden Blonde On Blonde-ish melodic romp that would sustain for the entire set. The band is currently working on a full length album due for release later this year and several of those songs were featured, along with tracks from the 2010 Future Weather EP, and their debut album Wagonwheel Blues on Secretly Canadian Records. The War On Drugs will perform again in NYC on April 3 at Webster Hall (opening for Destroyer).

We recorded this set with the same rig and location at the SVE set, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
