Tonstartssbandht: July 30, 2014 Palisades – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I made a concerted effort not long after listening to their new album Overseas, to memorize the difficult spelling of the band name Tonstartssbandht. I figured it was an investment to save time in the future. This site and this band are destined to be frequent partners moving forward — Tonstartssbandht seems to be a natural kindred spirit to this site. They play music in the most natural way, inspired by both their predecessors and their unique manner of creation — their live shows contain moments of improvisation and unlikely segues perhaps only possible when the band is a duo of brothers. The knee-jerk contemporary comparison is to Nashville brothers JEFF the Brotherhood, but really that band is a very different creature. While JEFF is a party duo fueled by 70s hard rock and Tennessee whiskey, TSB is an experience more akin to sharing some good herb on a muggy summer night. And speaking of Summer, in the heat of July we were fortunate to capture the band at the relatively new space on Broadway in Bushwick called Palisades. The venue was cool and inviting and has a very authentic Brooklyn DIY vibe. Its no surprise that premiere promoter Ad Hoc is booking a lot of events at the venue and this night was also one of their shows. In terms of performance, TSB were exactly as we’d hoped and maybe even a bit more. The set was like the Overseas record, a mix of songs and styles in a nearly continuous flowing set. The band only took a couple of breaks to talk to the crowd and the banter tracks are both natural and somewhat humorous, but then it was back to business. We are happy that the band was generous with their time and helped us complete the setlist for the recording. In reality, each track is really several numbers in a “medley” and we are streaming the “Susie Medley” as a prime example of what Tonstartssbandht does best.

But you need not take my word for it. Tonstartssbandht is back in NYC for a show at Mercury Lounge on Monday night, September 15. See you there!

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand at the soundboard about 20 feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed provided by venue FOH Ariel Bitran. The sound quality is very authentic to the sound in the venue and fully captures the experience from that night. Enjoy!

King Buzzo: July 14, 2014 The Wick – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs

For over 30 years, Buzz “King Buzzo” Osborne and the Melvins have made their own brand of heavy rock, ‘sludge’, an institution.  While that has had a huge influence on music, including helping birth the kinder, gentler ‘grunge’ genre, Melvins continue to stand apart from the crowd with a sound that is instantly recognizable.  When Buzzo decided to record and release his first acoustic album this year, the excellent ‘This Machine Kills Artists‘, it was definitely a departure from what he’s known for, but not completely unexpected from a performer who has been blazing his own trail for decades.  With Melvins being a favorite of ours and having appeared on this site several times, we were excited to hear that he was embarking on a solo tour in support of the new disc and relished the opportunity to catch his stop at The Wick, a new venue in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn.  Onstage with little more than an acoustic guitar, a microphone and his trademark hair, King Buzzo kicked his set off with the dramatic “Boris” and proceeded to keep the respectful Brooklyn crowd (aside from one overly enthusiastic attendee) in rapt attention for the next 75 minutes.  Peppered with anecdotes, observations and a hilarious story about Mike Patton, Buzz proved to be quite the raconteur.  His great combination of new songs, Melvins staples from their vast catalog and engaging, interactive banter made for a show that I could easily enjoy almost every night.

We recorded King Buzzo in the same manner as Mary Halvorson’s opening set with a stereo pair of Countryman B3 omni microphones placed onstage. While there is some ambient noise at times, the overall quality and clarity is excellent thanks to Buzzo’s sound engineer, Dave, and The Wick’s FOH, Joe. Enjoy!

Special thanks to King Buzzo, Joey Massa, Chris White, John Seroff and the staff at The Wick for making this recording possible and for their courtesy and cooperation.

Mary Halvorson: July 14, 2014 The Wick – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

July 15, 2014
By

[photos courtesy of P Squared Photography]

Mary Halvorson is a multi-talented, multifaceted musician who represents the best of the New York scene, which is to say that she seems to be everywhere all at once. A survey of her recent shows includes everything from more sedate jazz gigs at Cornelia Street Cafe, appearances with Tim Berne at the avant-jazz club Roulette, a show in the band People at Death By Audio, and of course, her current performances as opening act for Buzz Osborne aka King Buzzo of the Melvins, currently promoting his new solo album (that recording soon). As the New Yorker put it more succinctly, “she’s in tons of bands”.

While we have tried to feature many of the best-known current virtuoso guitarists on this site, this is a first appearance for Halvorson, a slight embarrassment to us given both her talent and how prolific she is. As this set at Bushwick’s The Wick demonstrated, she is a singular improviser who in a single set can cut across generations and genres. For this set, Halvorson chose to go the all-covers route, including songs by Ornette Coleman, Oliver Nelson, the bassist Chris Lightcap, and a host of other U.S. and international leading lights of jazz and guitar music. To their credit, Buzzo’s metal-minded audience understood what was going on, giving Halvorson her due. She deserves all that and more.

I recorded this set with a simplistic onstage rig of two small Countryman omnidirectional microphones split two and a half feet apart. While there is some ambient noise evident at points, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

BOYTOY: February 24, 2014 Shea Stadium – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band BOYTOY only has some scattered bandcamp tracks to their name, but don’t expect their anonymity to last. Leading off a four-band bill anywhere isn’t easy, but BOYTOY grabbed our attention immediately at Shea Stadium on this Friday night, with a wide-ranging brand of rock n’ roll delivered with a poise that belies their limited output. Their style ranged from the bratty pop-punk of “Bad Brain” to the more dense, shoegazey stylings we saw at the end of the set with “Blazed”, which recalled early Lush. Vocalist Saara Untracht-Oakner shows consistency even as the song styles change, and bandmates Glenn Van Dyke (guitar) and Matthew Gregory aka Matty Beans (drums) are right there with her, churning out one song after another that demands repeat listens. We enjoyed it so much that we are offering the entire set for stream, as well as the traditional FLAC and MP3 downloads, below. An EP is expected in late spring; keep an eye out on the band’s bandcamp page for more info.

As with the sets posted from Big Ups and Slothrust, this set was recorded in full digital multitrack provided by the Shea Stadium team, combined with a pair of my Naiant audience mics. We’d encourage you to check out Shea’s site for their own version of this show (coming soon) as well those of hundreds of other bands.

Big Ups: February 21, 2014 Shea Stadium – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

March 2, 2014
By

walter-wlodarczyk-big-ups-1

Big Ups sent the crowd into a frenzy from start to finish. Crowd surfers, held aloft on a sea of hands, pumped their fists. Frontman Joe Galarraga sprawled on the floor, tearing at his shirt, howling into the mic. Isn’t New York talked about, in lesser cities, as a place where crowds have been there, done that, don’t give a damn? Well, maybe not enough bands are asking us to pay attention. Big Ups, for their part, aren’t asking.

This show was punk rock at its elemental best, played in the right kind of setting, to the right kind of crowd. Shea Stadium feels like a safe space for shirt-ripping, lung-tearing pandemonium, and that’s what we got, the intimate space flung into chaos as Galarraga and his bandmates powered through songs from their killer new release Eighteen Hours of Static. Begun a few years ago when the band members were seniors in college, the Big Ups of today plays like the veteran outfit they are. What’s on offer isn’t just three-chord punk played loud; Brendan Finn, Amar Lal, Carlos Salguero Jr. and Galarraga deliver plenty of volume, but it’s the force with which they deliver it that sets them apart. They hit like a punch to the gut.

This set was recorded in full digital multitrack provided by the Shea Stadium team, combined with a pair of my audience mics. We’d encourage you to check out their site for their own version of this show (coming soon) as well as a previous Big Ups show and those of hundreds of other bands.

Big Ups will be playing this Monday, March 3 at Baby’s All Right, followed by the traditional tour down to Texas for South By Southwest. Check out the dates here.

Friend Roulette: April 5, 2013 Bushwick Starr – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We joined the band Friend Roulette last month at the Bushwick Starr to celebrate the release of Paul Damian Hogan the Third’s new record, but Friend Roulette had some celebrating to do of their own. This month they dropped their latest creation, the full length LP I’m Sorry You Hit Your Head, an album rich with whimsical orchestral pop creations. Singers/songwriters Matthew Meade and Julia Tepper show a variety of influences in their work, including classical music as well as film scores, and their willingness to venture afield from standard verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus structure is commendable. Throw in dual percussionists along with strings, keys and sax and you have a lot of layers for your brain to process — a challenge for the listener, but also a journey worth making. Pulling these songs off live was a challenge of its own in a stripped-down space, but the band showed no hesitation on this night, covering material from their first EP right through the new record. Streaming below is “Golden” from the new album, but we’d recommend hitting up their bandcamp page, where you can stream (and buy) the whole thing.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in an “ORTF” pattern, which provides optimal stereo imaging and reflects the acoustics of the space accurately. Enjoy!

Paul Damian Hogan The Third (if you wonder why the full name, Google “Paul Hogan” — he’s Crocodile Dundee, in case you’re wondering) is one of those artists that doesn’t slow down. Visit his website and you’ll find links to no less than eight albums, film scores, compositions, production (Friend Roulette’s EP, strings on Passion Pit’s Manners), and a few TV commercials — oh, and he’s also in the bands Frances and Ta Da, in his spare time. I was lucky enough to be invited to this special event at The Bushwick Starr, a comfortable DIY theater and event space on Starr Street near the Jefferson L, which Paul had rented out for the night to debut his latest record, The House, which appropriately enough is the successor to The Hut from 2009. Surrounded by friends and joined by a number of special guests, Hogan played The House for us straight through, with several songs transitioning seamlessly into the others. Hearing him live, it’s no surprise that he spends significant time as an arranger and producer — or that he has a Ph.D. in music — as his compositions and arrangements are dense, varied and surprising, never going quite where you expect. This debut of the new record in this unique and intimate space was the perfect way to introduce us to Hogan’s latest effort.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the center of the room with a wide pattern to capture the way it sounded live. Other than some PA hiss and occasional distortion, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

XVSK: July 23, 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

August 5, 2011
By

XVSK is the dynamic duo of Trevor Exter and John Morgan Kimock, and they turn the whole au courant notion of the noisy garage rock duo completely on its head. Lots of bands use the stripped-down format to excuse sloppy, thin songs; Exter and Kimock manage to pump out fully realized blues-rock tunes that could shame a band twice their size. They achieve it in part by being very good at what they do, and their pedigree has probably contributed to their current skill level. Kimock is the son of the legendary guitarist Steve Kimock, and the family’s musical gift has passed to John in the form of some vicious drum skills. Exter is a celebrated vocalist and cellist who has played with many great artists and released his own solo records, and the use of his plugged-in cello is a big part of what gives the duo a bigger sound. This Backyard Brunch Sessions performance could just as easily have been a studio session given how dialed-in the duo was. Although they haven’t been playing together long, the two musicians clearly have a compatible vision and style. According to the bio on his website, Exter had some rough travels on the way to the musical moment he is now in, and perhaps what makes his blues-inflected vocals so convincing, perhaps no more so than on the kickoff track to the afternoon, “Hits”, which has been stuck in my head since the show.

I recorded this set with AKG microphones on John’s drums, a direct output from Trevor’s vocal mic, and a Schoeps microphone on Trevor’s cello amps. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

U Say USA: June 19, 2011 NYCTaper Northside Showcase @ Public Assembly – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

July 4, 2011
By

I invited Bushwick’s U Say USA to play our first annual NYCTaper Northside Showcase without having actually seen their live show, but on the strength of some very positive word of mouth. Though the term “Bushwick band” might conjure the thought of an experimental keyboard project, U Say USA use their neighborhood (prominently featured on the cover of their record, The Greatest Recession (I’ve Ever Been To)) as the jumping off point for their songwriting, which deals with populist themes appropriate to the current moment, with a sense of humor to boot. As to their sound, the band combines some of punk’s jagged edges with a strong classic rock vibe. Particularly of note (and uncommon to an indie rock show) is lead guitarist Ian Gilliam’s guitar work – the man can seriously solo. The band have been upping their gig count of late, including a recently-completed residence at Williamsburg’s Trash Bar, and we expect to see more of them in the neighborhood.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets from this show. This recording emphasizes the board feed a bit more heavily, but overall is quite good. Also, apologies for the minor tracking error on tracks 2 and 3. Enjoy!

Givers: June 18, 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Before heading over to McCarren Park a few Saturdays ago to catch Guided By Voices and others on the Northside Festival main stage, I had the privilege of catching the inaugural show of the 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions, starring Lafayette, LA’s Givers.  With their good attitudes and laid back vibe, I liked this band before hearing a note of their music. Having recently signed to Glassnote Records for the release of their debut album, In Light, the band are enjoying a big push in the press lately, having been nominated as “buzzworthy” by MTV, a “band to watch” by Stereogum, and written about favorably by NPR.  It’s not hard to see why; not only is this five-piece eminently likable, but their music has that “something extra.”  In this case, that something is a touch of Afrobeat that gives their music a bouncy, percussive feel.  Male lead vocalist/guitarist Taylor Gaurisco’s sweet voice is nicely paired with female lead/percussionist Tiffany Lamson’s more smoky, soulful vocal approach.  For this backyard show, the band did not have their full arsenal of instruments, which pushed the emphasis to their songwriting.  I am pleased to report that the songwriting held up to the stripped-down scrutiny, particularly their much-talked-about leadoff single “Up Up Up.”  Though this set was short, it told us all we needed to know about the talent level of this young and exciting band.

hi and lo and I recorded this set with a variety of high end microphones (pictured) miking individual band members.  The results are outstanding, possibly the best Backyard Brunch recording we have offered to date!
