Purling Hiss: October 23, 2014 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Purling Hiss, the scuzz-rock project of Philadelphia-based guitarist/songwriter Mike Polizze, has emerged from his early records’ soup of fuzz with the band’s best-recorded, best album of righteously weird rock n’ roll, appropriately titled Weirdon. We couldn’t have been happier as longtime fans to feature this band as the headliner of our annual unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, where the Hiss gave us thirty minutes of the most badass shredding we saw all weekend. Appropriately enough, we first caught the band opening for fellow Philadelphian Kurt Vile, another artist who has cultivated his early sound into something still-vital but more accessible to the masses.

A set like this shows you another thing, which is that while Weirdon is certainly Polizze’s most complete song cycle yet, it’s as much a triumph of production as evolved songwriting. When you hear a Hiss classic like “Run From the City” next to some of the best new numbers like “Forcefield of Solitude” and “Learning Slowly”, you realize just how much the aesthetics of a recording actually do matter, even in the earbud age. Despite a CMJ-typical truncated set time, Polizze and the band put everything into what they had, with Polizze on his knees bent over his guitar at several points in front of a crowd that, in the best Cake Shop tradition, was practically on top of him. Closing out with the very early PH song “Almost Washed My Hair”, Polizze drew a straight line from then to now. To hear the live version below is to realize that, if you weren’t, you should have been on this bandwagon from day one.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones mounted just in front of the band on the ceiling, plus Clint’s excellent soundboard feed of the house mix. The sound quality makes this likely our best Purling Hiss recording. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss plays more New York dates, including this Wednesday at Death By Audio, and Friday night at 338 Moffat.

So Cow Cake Shop

So Cow released their excellent new album The Long Con on September 16, a date that fell square in the middle of a rare US tour. The tour was scheduled to coincide with the excellent Gonerfest thrown by their record label Goner. The tour also included two NYC shows, and we caught the second one at Cake Shop last week. This was the first time we’ve seen So Cow in over four years since a great set at the now long-departed Monster Island Basement in early 2010. At that point, Brian Kelly was playing with a tour band and recording alone, but now So Cow is a proper working band and The Long Con is the first full length album with the trio. The result is that the album sounds more like the live show we encountered in 2010 and again last week, and less like a Kelly bedroom recording. At Cake Shop, the band worked through a nice mix of material old and new, including the first single from the album “Barry Richardson” that we are streaming below. The album has received some excellent reviews, including a fine piece in PopMatters this week. We expect that the positive attention will propel this excellent band and that it won’t be four-plus years before we see them live again. At least I hope it won’t be.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted to the short ceiling in front of the stage and mixed with DPA omnis positioned in front of the stacks. The stage-mount provides a clear capture of the instruments while the stack tape is vocal heavy. The mix is adjusted to accentuate the positives of both sources and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Dead Stars: May 6, 2014 Cameo Gallery + October 17, 2013 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Dead Stars is one of those bands for whom you naturally root. They make excellent music that lacks any posing or pretentiousness, they are superb musicians, and the trio are generally all around good guys. This is the kind of band that you want to hang out with after the show. And thankfully we’ve been able to do that twice, last October at our annual CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop and earlier this month at a show we presented at Cameo Gallery. In the interim months between these two shows, Dead Stars signed with Old Flame Records who will release their new album Slumber, due out on June 17. The recordings of these two shows feature what amounts to most of the new album in a live format. Speaking of which, Dead Stars will play the CD release show for Slumber at Union Pool on June 19. Thereafter, the band heads out on a two week tour through the East coast and Midwest.

I recorded the Cameo show with the Sennheisers mounted high in front of the soundboard and mixed with a fine feed. The Cake Shop show was recorded with the Sennheisers mounted on the low ceiling in front of the stage and again mixed with a board feed. Cameo is deeper and richer sounding, but has some boominess, while Cake Shop is very upfront but perhaps a little thinner than Cameo. Both are excellent recordings in their own right. Enjoy!

Julia Weldon: October 17, 2013 NYCTaper CMJ at Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We have made no secret of the fact that we believe that Julia Weldon is destined for great things. We’ve recorded her twice previously this year, including the CD release party for her new album Light Is A Ghost, and each time we became more convinced of the inevitably of her musical upward mobility. Julia was an obvious choice for our NYCTaper CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop this year, and we were so pleased when she accepted our invite. And despite the afternoon set time, a good chunk of her fans managed to see this outstanding performer again impress with a set of her country-tinged indie folk. The week of this show, Julia’s new video for the song “Careful In The Dark” was premiered by the Village Voice, and her performance of that song at this show was particularly strong. We’re streaming it below. Julia Weldon has scheduled a series of upcoming shows, including this Friday at Wellesley College and Sunday night in a solo opening slot at the Knitting Factory.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous CMJ Cake Shop recordings and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

The Echo Friendly: October 17, 2013 NYCTaper CMJ Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Last year, The Echo Friendly achieved a prime song placement — their song “Same Mistakes” was featured as the closing credit music during an episode of HBO’s Girls. For an indie band from Greenpoint whose songs are often about the fact that the group’s two protagonists are ex’s, the song placement couldn’t have been any more appropriate. What follows is the big question — if The Echo Friendly can parlay this exposure into career momentum. When we experienced their outstanding performance to a packed room at our CMJ show at Cake Shop, there was a palpable sense of excitement in the room and the big question was answered with a resounding yes. The songs are there, the band is tight, and the stage energy is intense. We expect big things from The Echo Friendly, and we’re pleased to have been able to have them at our party this year.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous recordings from this show and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!

The Moondoggies: October 17, 2013 NYCTaper CMJ Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Moondoggies hail from Everett Washington, which means that they don’t get to NYC very often. We were there the last time they played our area — a superb show at the Rock Shop nearly three years ago. So when we learned that their tour coincided with CMJ, we jumped at the chance to have them play at our annual CMJ Day Party. Although the band started their set at 2pm, they still managed to pull in a nice crowd who were attentive throughout the band’s acoustic set. This year the Moondoggies released their third album Adiós I’m a Ghost (Hardly Art Records) and while this album continues the band’s rich Americana music, there’s also a mellower tone on the release. This theme fit the band’s stripped down set at Cake Shop which began with two of the songs from the new album, and included one other new song in the seven song set. We are streaming an excellent cover of the Byrds “Sweet Mary”, which reflects both the band’s influences and their ability to pay tribute to their predecessors. Those qualities are part of the reason why we hope its not another three years before the Moondoggies come back to NYC.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the two previous CMJ recordings (stage-mounted Sennheiser cards + board) and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

The Sheiks: October 24, 2013 Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Sheiks
[still from this video]

The Sheiks are from Memphis, which makes them difficult to google. The “Memphis Sheiks” was one of the alternative names of the Memphis Jug Band, the influential early 20th century African-American roots/bluegrass band that performed for nearly thirty years. The Sheiks was also the name of a regionally successful St. Louis rock band in the 70s and 80s, that played often in Memphis, New Orleans and the Mississippi region. The contemporary band known as The Sheiks is a garage rock band, and a damned good one at that. We caught them at Cake Shop last week and their half-hour set was pretty much everything you want from this genre of music — loud, energetic, fun and a little messy. The Sheiks released Witches + Mystics last Summer and the band performed much of the album, along with a couple of new tracks and one neat cover. We are streaming “Until I Find Her”, the opening track on the album, and a high-speed rave up that represents everything that’s good about this genre and this band in particular.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted above the stage and mixed with DPA omni mounted in front of the stacks. The four mic mix is quite excellent, if a bit low in the vocals. Enjoy!

The Sixth Annual NYCTaper CMJ Day Party at Cake Shop was headlined by a band fronted by one of our favorite people in the music world. Vincent Cacchione has been a friend of the site for years, going all the way back to his days as guitarist in Shilpa Ray’s band, through the emergence of Soft Black, and ultimately his current project Caged Animals. 2013 has been a big year for the band, as Caged Animals released a universally praised new album In The Land of Giants in September. Their set at our Day Party was a celebratory affair, with the band asking and receiving crowd participation throughout. Vincent’s engaging personality is infectious but the other members of the quartet, including his sister bassist Talia, keyboardist/vocalist Magali Francoise and drummer Patrick Curry were all involved in the party atmosphere. The band performed songs from all of their releases including “Teflon Heart” that we’re streaming below. Sadly, as our show ran up into the night show, Caged Animals were only able to play their allotted 30 minutes — next time we’ll hope for more.

I recorded this set in the same manner at the J Fernandez set and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

J Fernandez: October 17, 2013 NYCTaper CMJ at Cake Shop – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The plethora of good bedroom recording artists presents an enigma for booking shows. For every successful transition to excellent live band (Wild Nothing, Purling Hiss) there are a dozen or more who can’t get beyond solo-guy-with-laptop on stage. When we learned that the excellent Chicago dream-pop artist J Fernandez was coming to NYC for CMJ shows, we jumped at the chance to book him. Fernandez has been releasing a series of singles over the last few years on local labels, and last year Morning Ritual Recordings compiled them all on an excellent release No Luck / Olympic Village. But we had no idea what he’d be like live. It was within the first thirty seconds of the first song that I quickly realized that J Fernandez isn’t just a bedroom pop act, but indeed a superb live band with abundant talent and stage presence. Justin and the band paced through many of the tunes from the compilation and a few new ones, and live the tunes took on a very tasty psychedelic feel not prevalent on the more two-dimensional recorded tracks. We are streaming “No Luck”, the title track of one of the EPs and a featured track. Given the quality of this performance, we hope that J Fernandez and the band come East more often.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted above the front of the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Port St. Willow: October 18, 2012 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

November 20, 2012
By

The documented connection between Port St. Willow frontman Nick Principe and childhood friend Peter Silbermann of The Antlers goes beyond their shared background. Both have a grandiosity and mournfulness to their sounds; both share a similar vocal style – a soaring falsetto that is its own instrument, at times obscuring the lyrics themselves. But where The Antlers lean more toward narrative storytelling and show a continued passion for rock dynamics, Principe is more comfortable in the realm of more obtuse, atmospheric composition. The songs on his debut record, Holiday, offer a variety of textures to plumb; some have described the record as “airy”. After catching an impressive set opening for The Antlers this summer at Glasslands, Port St. Willow was right at the top of the list of bands to play our unofficial CMJ Day show at Cake Shop, and this set delivered on the promise of that earlier experience. Principe, backed by his touring live band, played a set of six songs in a near-seamless 35-minute set. Even in mid-afternoon, the 10+ minute opener “Hollow” wowed the sizable crowd as Principe & Co. built his delicate compositions from scratch before our eyes. The recording that you have here is arguably the best quality of all that we recorded during this show, and other than a couple of spots where the vocal mic distorted during “Tourist”, it is virtually flawless. We hope that you enjoy, and head to Port St. Willow’s bandcamp page to check out Holiday in its full glory.
