Caveman: October 15, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Brooklyn band Caveman have been several times on these pages in the last few years, including most recently a sold-out show at Webster Hall in the Spring of last year. After a lengthy quiet period, in October the band played a cluster of shows and we found out why — they’re recording a big batch of new songs. We were fortunate to capture the first of these recent shows, the one year anniversary show for Baby’s All Right where Caveman debuted six new songs. We are streaming the excellent “Without You” below, at the beginning of which lead singer Matthew Iwanusa announced that its from “a record that will not come out anytime soon”. We’re not sure why that’s the case since the band seems to have enough solid material for another strong album, and the songs seem very much to be finished. We checked over at Fat Possum Records, where Caveman still appears to be an active artist, so for now we can just enjoy these songs and wait for official news. The Baby’s show also included a nice selection of older material from the band’s first two albums, and finished with a lengthy Vampirer/Old Friend that we’re also streaming below. There are no current tour dates for Caveman, so we’ll assume they’re still recording the new album.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed on the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Caveman has come a long way very quickly since we first saw them 18 months ago as an opening band at Cameo Gallery. At that show, opening for fellow quick-climbers The War On Drugs, it was fairly obvious that Caveman would be going places. A couple of months later they were playing larger gigs, and when their debut CoCo Beware was picked up by Fat Possum Records, the band went national. This month, the band released their anticipated follow-up to CoCo, a self-titled second album that retains the band keen sense of melody and 80s-influenced pop while taking the next step. Caveman is a more mature and more consistently excellent album — just exactly the kind of second album that bodes well for the long term future of Caveman. On Wednesday night at Webster Hall, the band celebrated a homecoming and the CD’s new release with a triumphant show before a packed house. The setlist included most of the band’s recorded material and they were simply ebullient throughout the seventy-five minute set. Matthew Iwanusa spent much of the between-song banter thanking the crowd and acknowledging the band’s fortunes, and the feeling was mutual.

We recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted inside the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by the band’s touring FOH. Enjoy!

Caveman: September 17, 2011 Beekman Beer Garden + August 19, 2011 Cameo Gallery – Flac and MP3 Downloads and Streaming Songs

In the last six weeks, we have twice had the pleasure of seeing one of Brooklyn’s brightest new bands — each time supporting an nyctaper-favorite band. In August when Caveman opened for War On Drugs at Cameo Gallery, we were unfamiliar with the band. Their sound features prominent keyboards, which naturally draws comparison to 80s bands, but its the heavy rhythmic elements that align them with contemporaries like The Dodos and Local Natives. Following the Cameo show, Caveman played a sold-out CD release show for their debut album CoCo Beware at Mercury Lounge. We caught them again after the Mercury coming-out party, this time at the Beekman Beer Garden with The Hold Steady. Perhaps it was my imagination, but it seemed that in a month since the Cameo show, Caveman was playing tighter and with more confidence. “Old Friend”, which flows live from the instrumental “Vampirer” was a strong end of set number that features a driving beat and the sweet melancholy vocals of Matthew Iwanusa, and we are streaming it below.

I recorded the Cameo show in the same manner at the War On Drugs recording, with the Neumanns supplemented with a mono board feed. The Beekman show was recorded with the four-microphone rig directly in front of the soundboard cage. The sound quality of both sets is excellent. Enjoy!
