Guerilla Toss: September 7, 2019 Bowery Ballroom

September 19, 2019
By

It was last Halloween when our long-time fave space rock pranksters blasted off into Market Hotel, sold out the joint, and presided over perhaps the party of the year. It would be hard to match that epic night in NYC, and for almost a year Guerilla Toss didn’t even try. That is to say, this Bowery Ballroom night is their first proper local headlining gig since last Hallows Eve.

This Saturday night gig may not have been the pure rager that Market experienced, but as GT shows go, this was a real keeper. The band has developed a full-set style of playing distinct “parts” or segments where three or four songs flow naturally from one to the other, and as the band continues to master its live presentation, these segues have become nearly seamless. The Bowery show has not only a tremendous flow, but also a killer setlist, highlights including the Betty>Polly couplet, a Dose Rate that lived up to its name, and a guitar-heavy jammy Meteorological. Things bode well for the November release of the band’s latest EP, What Would The Odd Do? and we can’t wait.

The current Guerilla Toss Northeast Tour comes to a close with two shows, Friday in Boston and Saturday in Holyoke, dates here.

I recorded this set from our old balcony perch and mixed with an excellent feed from FOH Danielle. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Guerilla Toss: June 19, 2018 Union Pool (Residency Night 3)

June 28, 2018

The phenomenal Brooklyn band Guerilla Toss graced the hometown crowd with a monthlong residency at local haunt Union Pool that found the band trying out new songs and compelling covers, and generally driving the locals wild. This band’s bread and butter has always been the live setting, but these shows put the band at a new level. Against the backdrop of sick visuals from Macrodose, Kassie Carlson whipped the room into a frenzy, culminating in a room wide mosh pit during set-closing “Polly’s Crystal.” Whipping from one song straight into the next for almost the entire hour, the band served up sixteen songs that included an ESG cover and the new numbers “Come Up With Me” and “Green Apple.” In case you were worried, I think we can expect their next release to meet or exceed the outstanding GT Ultra.

This recording combines engineer Doug’s awesome house mix plus my Schoeps MK5 mics from the center of the balcony. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Guerilla Toss: July 30, 2016 Secret Project Robot

We had seen Guerrilla Toss a few times before this year’s Out in the Streets Festival performance that we captured. To us, and to anyone who has watched their ascent, they are one of those rare live bands that you seek out, who combine musical originality and daring with a live performance that’s bound to engage even the more pop-leaning subjects whom it reaches. It’s not insignificant the this band is signed to DFA, not only because that avatar of the previous decade conjures the best about the north Brooklyn scene, but also because they tend to sign acts that get your body moving, with whatever technology necessary.

This Secret Project Robot show only extends the myth and the mystery of this band, being held in a creative space that, like most things north Brooklyn, was temporal but great. Add to that their specific choice of playing on the floor, rather than on stage, putting frontwoman Kassie Carlson, in particular, right in the audience’s face. If it wasn’t the technically strong show, in terms of sound system, it was absolutely one that showed what is best about this band’s interactive, high-energy live experience. This writhing, sweaty rager, featuring songs from the band’s DFA debut, Eraser Stargazer, showed that fun music can be cerebral, too.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones not far from the band. The sound quality is reflective of the setup and the way it was recorded, and fits the moment perfectly. Enjoy!
