Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt: January 29, 2019 Union Pool

March 20, 2019
By

The long-running collaboration of drummer Chris Corsano and guitarist Bill Orcutt has been characteristically slippery, as their series of ridiculously limited LPs, 7″s, and tapes appear and disappear from merch tables faster than the duo can churn out another frenzied jam. Their latest collision, and first to take place in the studio, is called Brace Up! The cover depicts a stage diver in mid-flight, heading straight for an atomic bomb’s mushroom cloud—which is pretty much the best description anyone has come up with for what these two do. Back in January, Corsano and Orcutt once again joined forces at Union Pool, each playing solo sets before recreating that same intensity of the album with a duo set.

I recorded this set from our usual location at Union Pool at the soundboard, combined with a feed from FOH Doug Graham. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

William Tyler: January 23, 2019 Rough Trade NYC

Howdy guitar-heads, and just-plain-old-heads! One of our favorite travelers, William Tyler, Goes West on his new LP, out now on Merge. He’s currently touring the U.S. into March and Europe in April, so do check out his full tour dates for your local gig. Here in NYC, Tyler appears at (Le) Poisson Rouge on February 26. It’s a sure bet he’ll be slinging some tunes old and new, so grab your tickets.

We got a lucky chance to hear Tyler preview the new album at Rough Trade NYC last month, as well as play some songs from Modern Country. In typical fashion he was nice and chatty, sharing some anecdotes between songs and being an all around positive guy. Meanwhile, Tyler also penned an essay about Cosmic Pastoral music for Aquarium Drunkard—more evidence that he’s one of the most interesting and thoughtful voices on instrumental guitar.

I recorded this set with the MBHO cardioids set up in stereo DIN configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of Rough Trade FOH Jeremy Rychard Snyder. The sound is outstanding thanks to Jeremy and a quiet crowd. Enjoy!

Dire Wolves: February 7, 2019 Union Pool

San Francisco’s Dire Wolves don’t come around too often, but when they do they bring the heat. This one features the Wolves’ Jeffrey Alexander backed by what he calls a “strange” version of the band: Jesse Sheppard (Elkhorn) on bass, Jeff Tobias (Sunwatchers) on sax, and Scott Verrastro (Bardo Pond) on drums. What results is the Wolves’ shaggy psych mixed with jazzy excursions.

Speaking of which, it’s Excursions to Cloudland, released on Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records, that hipped me to Dire Wolves. And then there’s also this fantastic split with Headroom that I’ve gravitated towards when looking for a fix. Dire Wolves will have another one out with BBiB sometime soon so stay tuned to find out what new lands they’ve got in store.

Thanks to Jeff Conklin for putting on this awesome bill. Tune in to The Avant Ghetto on WFMU for more of the goods!

I recorded this set with our usual setup for Union Pool: a board feed from FOH extraordinaire Doug combined with the MBHOs in DIN configuration at the board. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Sunwatchers: December 9, 2018 Baby’s All Right

Plenty of new Sunwatchers action out there for the years old and new. First up there’s the killer collab with Eugene Chadbourne, 3 Characters, out on Amish Records last year. The gang cover a bunch of Minutemen tunes on the first disc, followed by some Doug Sahm and Henry Flynt tunes on the second. It’s a trip! Then there’s Sunwatchers’ third LP, Illegal Moves, which is gonna blow some minds—just check out that cover! We’ve heard many of the new tunes live this past year and there’s no doubt this is going to be stratospheric.

Speaking of seeing Sunwatchers live, here’s a nice set from last month at Baby’s All Right. The foursome break out a still-untitled new tune along with previewing some tracks from Illegal Moves.

I recorded this with the MBHO omniderectional mics on stage, combined with a board feed from the Baby’s crew. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: December 22, 2018 Union Pool

Art by Arnold Conklin

West Coasters! Garcia Peoples hit the road with Howlin’ Rain starting this Thursday, January 10th, in Bellingham, Washington and continuing through Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and California. The full listing of dates with ticket links can be found at Howlin’ Rain’s website. Do go out and see both bands!

In other exciting Garcia Peoples news, they recently announced their second LP, Natural Facts, and it’s up for preorder from Beyond Beyond is Beyond. The Garcias played a couple of songs from the album in Brooklyn last month, “High Noon Violence” and “Break Me Down.” Unexpectedly, the band also played a pair of covers to celebrate Jeff Conklin’s birthday, “Laila Pt. 2” by Agitation Free and “Easy Ride” by Relatively Clean Rivers. If you listen to The Avant Ghetto on WFMU (and you should) you’ll likely recognize these two bands as a couple of Jeff’s favorites.

I recorded this set from our usual location at the soundboard, with a feed courtesy of Union Pool FOH Jase Hottenroth. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Elkhorn: July 29, 2018 Union Pool (Freedom of the Press Benefit)

There’s been a lot of great talk surrounding Kith & Kin’s Freedom of the Press compilation, the latest being this long piece from Pop Matters. For anyone interested in music and art, the fight for freedom of expression resonates deeply. If that sounds like you, head on over to Bandcamp and help out by purchasing Freedom of the Press—great music for a great cause, a total win-win.

Elkhorn are a band I’ve wanted to get on the site for a while now. The last near-miss was a recording from last month at Wonders of Nature that just didn’t come out. It happens. But fortunately, they’re (mostly) locals and I got another chance this past weekend. This one captures Elkhorners Drew Gardner and Jesse Sheppard performing a compact version of the “Lionfish” improvisations from their latest (very, very awesome) cassette on Eiderdown Records of the same title. They’re then joined by Ryan Jewell on tablas for a couple tunes: “Song of Son” and “Subway Mirror Heart.” If you dig this be sure to check out the Lionfish tape and their self-titled record (plus some more live stuff) over at their Bandcamp page.

Hans Chew: July 29, 2018 Union Pool (Freedom of the Press Benefit)

If you truck in Cosmic American Music, you’ve hopefully picked up the new Freedom of the Press compilation from Kith & Kin, which features so many of the modern luminaries of the scene. And if you haven’t yet, there’s no time like the present. We at NYCTaper are supporters of the First Amendment as well as the music and were delighted to be part of this benefit. For a much more articulate discussion on why this cause is so important, and how the music fits in to it, check out this interview with label co-founder and executive producer of the compilation, Scott McDowell.

Speaking of things we at NYCTaper have an affinity for, we’ve been following Hans Chew’s music for a while now—since way back in 2012, in fact, when Hans played our CMJ show. Times have changed for sure: CMJ is gone, but we’re still here and so is Hans. He released a new record last year, Open Sea, which artfully blends his piano playing, sharp lyrics, and songwriting with a nod to the free playing styles of the 70s. I really couldn’t put it better than Tyler Wilcox did in Aquarium Drunkard: “While digging into Open Sea, Hans Chew’s latest/greatest LP, your imagination may conjure up some dream rock combos. Leon Russell hiring Television to be his backing band in ’77? Joe Boyd producing the Allmans? JJ Cale jamming with Crazy Horse?”

Garcia Peoples: July 29, 2018 Union Pool (Freedom of the Press Benefit)

July 30, 2018
By

Garcia Peoples contributed “Show Your Troubles Out” to the recently-released Freedom of the Press compilation and so were on hand for yesterday’s show benefiting the same foundation. I highly recommend picking up the compilation on CD or digital, not only for the terrific music found therein but also for the damn good cause and positive thinking it represents. We had a blast yesterday seeing the Garcias, Elkhorn, and Hans Chew and were thrilled to be part of the event. We’ll be be back shortly with recordings of those sets as well.

Speaking of new releases, Garcia Peoples will put out Cosmic Cash this Friday! Maybe you’ve heard some tracks off it, maybe you’ve caught one of their many local gigs or heard some live tunes here or on the Avant Ghetto show on WFMU. Wherever you’ve been getting your Garcia Peoples fix from, now’s the time to take the tunes home. And don’t miss Garcia Peoples celebrating Cosmic Cash with a release show at Union Pool this Friday, August 3rd. Bong Wish and zzzwalk also play, and I hear they’re damn good. Do go down and show the guys some love.

Garcia Peoples: June 10, 2018 Wonders of Nature

June 20, 2018
By

New Jersey-based Garcia Peoples have been turning local heads for little while now, but are poised for some major attention with their upcoming Beyond Beyond is Beyond debut, Cosmic Cash. The five-piece features Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki on guitars, Cesar Arakaki on drums, and Andy Cush on bass, plus the recently-joined P.G. Six on keyboards. With more than a passing resemblance to the Grateful Dead, Garcia Peoples trade in laid-back slacker jams and good vibes. Do head over to Bandcamp and preorder Cosmic Cash now!

The band is in the midst of a four-week residency at Wonders of Nature. We caught them for the second in the series of shows on June 10th where they played us a few stretched out tunes from the album and a mind-bending finale jammer with Kryssi Battalene of Mountain Movers and Headroom. If you haven’t made it out to Wonders of Nature yet to see Garcia Peoples, never fear—they play this Sunday with Hans Chew and Prison & Pigeons. Don’t miss it!

L.A.’s Dommengang have returned after a three-year absence with a new record and accompanying live dates. On their second record, Love Jail, the band trades in the instrumental psych typified on Everybody’s Boogie for their own brand of mustache rock. Moreso even than the Sunset Strip vibes Dommengang channel throughout the LP, Love Jail conjures the aura of the 1975 private press LP from Minnesota band Highway. Most of all, Love Jail is a lot of fun, something you can roll down the windows and blast. If you find yourself in southwest next month (or just feel like you need a road trip), be sure to catch the band opening a few dates for Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.
