Phish: July 28, 2017 Madison Square Garden

The sixth night of Phish’sBaker’s Dozen” shows at Madison Square Garden was thematically the “double chocolate” donut show. This presented some challenges for song selection as Phish’s vast catalog does not contain a song with the word “chocolate” in its title. But ultimately, in a run of never-ending surprises and first-time covers, Phish chose to open with the 2007 novelty one-hit wonder “Chocolate Rain” by Tay Zonday. The balance of the first set was comprised of fairly short dips through some obscure numbers (“Destiny Unbound”) and the classic material (“Divided Sky”), with the set-closing “Sand” perhaps the highlight of the eleven-song set.

The second set began with another acapella number (The Might Diamonds’ “Have Mercy”) before Phish launched into the first serious jam of the night—a tremendous “Chalkdust Torture.” The chocolate theme appeared again with a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing” with Mike on vocals. The second chance to jam was the segues between “Mercury,” “Sexy Thing Reprise” and an extended “Backwards” that ended the set in fine fashion. The encore segment closed with another acapella number, this time an inventive and entertaining version of Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”

Eric PH recorded this set with the AKG CK61’s mounted in the official taper’s section, while acidjack recorded with Schoeps MK4V on the same stand. The sound quality of both is excellent. Enjoy!

Drag Sounds: May 13, 2017 Our Wicked Lady

July 9, 2017
By

I’ve been aching to get a Drag Sounds recording up here ever since I saw them play at Hopscotch back in 2014. Of the very, very rich North Carolina music scene that gets showcased at the festival every year, Drag Sounds are at the top of the pile. Finally, the guys did a brief East Coast tour in May and I was able to get out on a rainy night to catch them indoors at Our Wicked Lady (originally scheduled as a rooftop show, can’t wait to get back to the venue for one of those). I had some good intel from Triangle-area folks that Drag Sounds were currently at the top of their game, but I was still surprised at how vital these guys are sounding—more swing here than you can shake a stick at. You’ll find a couple of these tracks like “Out All Night (For Love)” and “Messy Life” in various forms on the Bandcamp page, on the two-disc Sudden Comfort and earlier II. Newer song “Blessed Style” sounds like the band’s answer to “Sister Ray” if you ask me, but anyway it’s a monster. Drag Sounds are up-and-comers for sure so here’s the ground floor for ya, get on.

I recorded this with the mics set up in DIN stereo configuration, high up on the bar, combined with a board feed courtesy of Our Wicked Lady engineer, Rich Crescenti. It leans towards the rough side but rocks really hard. Enjoy!

Ovlov: June 23, 2017 The Bell House

Just when you thought it couldn’t be salvaged, here comes Ovlov to rescue Emo from the clutches of the mainstream garbage bands these kids today are listening to. (I’ll refrain from naming names.) Ovlov take me back to the nineties Emo I love with reference points like Hum, The Promise Ring, Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil, Nada Surf—all touchstones of my high school CD collection. Naturally, they’re doing it on Exploding in Sound Records, whose taste in quality young bands is unimpeachable. This set opening for Spiral Stairs at the Bell House captures the band playing songs off their EIS album, am, plus a few new ones. Considering Ovlov have broken up at least a couple times now, it’s not insignificant that they’ve got some new songs to play us—Ovlov still clearly still have a lot of music in them.

I recorded this with the mics set up at the board in DIN stereo configuration, which I then combined with a board feed from the Bell House’s FOH David Hurtgen. A special thanks goes out to David for loaning me a mic stand so I could make this recording for you all. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Jackie Lynn: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

On the run from the law and those outside it, Jackie Lynn nevertheless found her way to do some touring behind last year’s self-titled Thrill Jockey record. Jackie’s tale of crime, love, escape, and revenge is painted across eight tracks with synths, electronic drum tracks, twelve-string acoustic guitar, and an unmistakeable voice. The entirety of the album is performed live. Come for the thrills of “Alien Love” and “Franlkin, TN” —stay for Jackie’s catharsis (and redemption?) in “Jackie.”

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Moon Duo: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

May 7, 2017

If psychedelic music aims to be transportive, then Moon Duo’s destination looks something like a Village nightclub featuring the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Sanae Yamada’s synths swirl together with Riply Johnson’s guitar while drummer John Jeffrey plays with motorik precision. Hypnotic visuals play a game of hiding and showing the musicians. Moon Duo play songs for the dark and urban, and naming their recent two-volume album Occult Architecture underscores the time and place of their music. Song titles like “The Death Set,” “Creepin’,” and “Cult of Moloch” tell you this setting shouldn’t be comforting. Capping off the set is a cover of those most-sinister Stooges: “No Fun” gets washed in synth flourishes while Johnson does his best Iggy. The psychedelic sixties are here.

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson and Moon Duo’s touring engineer. The sound is spectacular. Enjoy!

Moon Duo will be back on May 20th to celebrate Sacred Bones’ 10 Anniversary at Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse.
